HackerNoon Reporter: Please tell us briefly about your background. I was enthralled with technology and entrepreneurship from a young age. I was born in Australia but grew up in Hong Kong. One of my favorite past times was wandering through the bustling electronics markets of Hong Kong, searching for different games or computer parts. When it came time for high school, I had my eye on the entrepreneurial action of Silicon Valley, so I convinced my parents to let me travel solo to the US and attend school in the San Francisco Bay Area. I ended up trying my luck on a few mobile app ideas after high school, including one that let people retrieve digital photo memories (before Snapchat, Facebook, and Google). I was accepted into a San Jose-based incubator called Teens In Tech. In the meantime, I fell in love with Santa Clara University after reading the story of a student named Diane Keng, who graduated after having built and sold multiple startups. That’s how I ended up at Santa Clara University, which is where we founded Poplar Homes (formerly Onerent). What's your startup called? And in a sentence or two, what does it do? Our company is (formerly Onerent). We’re a tech-enabled property management service for residential real estate. Poplar makes renting a home as easy as buying a book off Amazon and helps property owners manage properties like they manage their stocks. We do everything from listing a home for rent to fixing the pipes when there’s a leak! Poplar Homes What is the origin story? We founded Poplar Homes in 2014 after our own terrible housing experience as college students. My co-founders and I were all left without housing one year and figured that was a pretty fundamental problem also experienced by many of our peers. We set up shop in a garage on Poplar Street (part of the inspiration for our new name) and got to work. Our platform ended up renting 90% of the off-campus housing inventory. Eventually, we realized the big opportunity in modernizing not just off-campus housing, but property management as a business model. In late 2015, we expanded beyond college campuses to the general market and started offering full-service property management. Today we manage over 2,200 homes across 10 major markets in the US, doing everything from leasing to maintenance and rent collection. What do you love about your team, and why are you the ones to solve this problem? Our team is not afraid of taking big leaps of faith and weathering the storm. We‘re serious and persistent in our mission to simplify the entire real estate lifecycle. As founders when we started, we personally managed a small portfolio of around 20 properties. We’d go out and take photos, answer calls, clean up the homes, and even handle tricky situations like evictions all on our own. This in-the-field learning was essential for young founders who didn’t have decades of past experience in real estate in our back pocket. I think it gave us a lot of perspective on how difficult it is to be a landlord--even with all the bad rep people give them. We saw how strained relationships can become between a tenant and landlord. Eventually, we combined our organic experience with experienced real estate and tech operators, adding executives to our team from large US Real Estate Investment Trusts and some of the country’s largest property management businesses. Today, our executive team each carries over 10+ years of experience in real estate management, technology, and operations on portfolios as large as 50,000 homes managed across the country. Our advisory board includes Google’s Chief of AI as an investor and advisor. If you weren’t building your startup, what would you be doing? If I weren’t building this startup, I’d certainly be building another--likely in real estate as well. Real estate is a complex asset class. This is why it’s one of the lagging industries in technology adoption. Yet, it’s also the world’s largest asset class. I’m fascinated with building technology to bridge these complex offline-to-online experiences and I believe that’s the current era of innovation that we’re only beginning now. Even the most offline businesses can now benefit from technology and I see massive opportunity in that regard. At the moment, how do you measure success? What are your core metrics? Our primary measure of success is the number of doors (rental units) we have under management and customer satisfaction. As of this writing, we have around 2,200 doors under management and an 85% customer satisfaction rating (the industry average in property management is less than 40%). As we grow, more doors in our portfolio also means more opportunities for us to help renters and real estate investors in all steps of their journey—from renting, to buying, selling, and investing. What’s most exciting about your traction to date? We’ve grown 70% in the last six months as technology adoption in real estate was dramatically accelerated during the pandemic in 2020. We also added key new team members such as Travis Buchanan, our Chief Operating Officer who brings experience in managing tens of thousands of homes at American Homes 4 Rent (NYSE:AMH). What technologies are you currently most excited about, and most worried about? And why? The technology for anti-fraud and identity verification are critical in high-value transactions such as real estate. Over 5.2 million renters each year lose money in a scam when fraudsters spoof rental listings and pose as a landlord to rip-off unassuming renters. I’m excited and feel a sense of urgency around anti-fraud technology to stop the millions of dollars lost by renters. At Poplar, we built a tool called as one way to try and help renters identify scam listings. It’s important to put a stop to rental fraud. Scamlord.ai I would not fear or worry about technology if it weren’t for bad actors such as scammers. In that regard, I worry about the tech that these scammers have at their disposal. Software such as face manipulation or filter apps are concerning as we’ve seen fraudsters attempt to impersonate a stolen identity and bypass facial recognition tools. These data manipulation products, when in the wrong hands, could wreak havoc on people’s wallets and well-being. What drew you to get published on HackerNoon? What do you like most about our platform? We’re big fans of HackerNoon’s editorial team and contributors. As a young startup founder, it’s unrealistic to expect you’ll learn the tricks of the trade in a purely academic setting. Publications such as HackerNoon and the communities built around it help young entrepreneurs absorb so many strategic and tactical best practices that have real application in the company yielding process. What advice would you give to the 21-year-old version of yourself? Go beyond flashy apps and look at the dirtiest, unsexiest problems out there to solve. Look at fundamental human needs and identify what part of the supply chain for that basic need is broken. Often there are fewer people taking action on those problems. Because of that, there is a massive opportunity if your solution is the right one and picks up traction. What is something surprising you've learned this year that your contemporaries would benefit from knowing? In the last year, I learned that the foundation of company culture is what gets you through extremely difficult times like those we all faced in the last year. We’ve been through many of the ups and downs of company-building, but my co-founders and I have worked together on this with full commitment for seven years. My adventure in healthcare started in 2011 when, with a friend of mine, I founded a company that is now called SkinVision, a skin cancer screening app. I was responsible for product and research so that is where I’ve gathered most of my experience in healthcare and got a first hand view of the challenges. What's your startup called? And in a sentence or two, what does it do? Medicai is the name of the startup and it is a web based medical imaging platform that changes the way doctors and patients coordinate care, especially for chronic or rare conditions that require handling of complex medical data - i.e. imaging, digital pathology etc What is the origin story? In 2018 I wanted to do something else after I left my first company. I gathered a team made up of people I worked with in the past and we started exploring. We have experience in computer vision and AI so medical imaging made sense but when we started talking to stakeholders we realised we were surrounded by CDs (which don’t really mix with AI). We started looking into why this is still happening and realised we could make a big difference by changing the way doctors and patients interact. The question actually is: how would interactions between doctors and patients change if had an online tool that allows instant collaboration on those “data sets” - i.e. what if, as a patient, I could view/edit my MRI scan together with my doctor directly online? What do you love about your team, and why are you the ones to solve this problem? I feel we have reached a point where everyone is aligned in doing what is best for the company and we can now focus on that. I believe culture is crucial and we managed to create an open and inclusive environment that can help us build to last. If you weren’t building your startup, what would you be doing? Building another startup? At the moment, how do you measure success? What are your core metrics? We are still very much in the product building phase so we measure engagement and usage. We want a great product so we focus on what our users want and need. Any KPI that can help us better understand what our users want/need is important so DAU/MAU, time spent on avg. -  that type of thing What’s most exciting about your traction to date? We see a lot of doctors using the platform every day for multiple hours. Doctors are notoriously difficult to convert and that’s why we’re pretty happy about it. On top, we have a real chance of changing things in a very important field to many people What technologies are you currently most excited about, and most worried about? And why? We focus on AI and we strongly believe it will change a lot of things in healthcare but also that we are not there yet. Spend enough time browsing forums frequented by mechanical keyboard enthusiasts, such as , and somebody will inevitably declare that they’ve achieved “end-game” with their latest clackety love interest. /r/mechanicalkeyboards It’s a tongue-in-cheek reference to the fact that mech owners are rarely satisfied — there’s always a smoother switch, a shinier Gem Artisan keycap set or a more comfortable wrist rest out there yet to be discovered. Essentially, to achieve end-game is to discover a keyboard that ticks nine of 10 boxes; it’s as good as things are going to get at that moment in time. (End)Game on After bashing out articles on a MacBook Air since 2011, I decided last summer that something had to change. Apple’s demotion of its classic laptop in 2016, combined with my own growing interest in mechanical keyboards, led me to pursue my own end-game nirvana. Ten keyboards, a few thousand pounds later and more hours pulling off keycaps than I care to admit, my search ended. The , a Japanese-made keyboard designed for touch-typists that uses variable weight Topre switches, emerged as the victor one year later. But the interesting part to this story is not so much where I ended up, but how I got there. Realforce 87UW The journey wouldn’t have been possible without help from The Keyboard Company, which lent me numerous boards in the past 12 months and sold me the 87UW in the end. When I was working as computing editor for TechRadar last year, we spent one glorious summer day visiting the company’s Stroud HQ, interviewing its eloquent MD Bruce Whiting, aka for a . We also heard a particularly interesting tale about the time Terry Pratchett bought several keyboards from the company in the 90s. @FilcoUK, video on the psychology of mechanical keyboard users The journey Here’s a run through of the various keyboards I bought or sampled, and why each one leading up to the 87UW didn’t scratch my proverbial keyboard itch: : A gaming keyboard, one that formed my love of low-profile keyboards. It featured excellent build quality, ideal height keycaps and a wrist rest that’s so luxurious I use it to this day. Its linear Cherry Red switches actuated under too little pressure, however, forcing me to make frequent typos. Their lack of tactility meant they weren’t very satisfying to type on, either. Cherry MX Board 6.0 Razer BlackWidow X Chroma: Failing to learn my lesson about opting for gaming keyboards, I picked up a BlackWidow with Cherry Blues. I spent an entire evening inserting three rubber ‘O’ rings on the stems of each keycap to prevent the keys from bottoming-out (depressing all the way down), which resulted in a curiously satisfying clicky typing feel. The whole setup was a bit too daft to use as a permanent solution though and, shortly after, I discovered… : This was more like it. The board that introduced me to the world of Topre switches changed things forever. Using it felt like composing on weighted piano keys and made Cherry’s switches feel cheap and crude in comparison, but its plastic chassis failed to inspire and the mech suffered from excessive key rattle. I wondered what other keyboards out there used the same switch, and so I stumbled across the Japanese company Topre. Cooler Master NovaTouch TKL : My first Realforce was bought from The Keyboard Company via Amazon, and it felt like a game-changer. Sporting uniform 45-gram Topre keyswitches, a minimal design and an alluring stealthy grey-on-black color scheme, the 87U resembled a more luxurious (and solidly built) version of the NovaTouch. Hammering away on it produced a deeper “thock” sound than the CoolerMaster too. Topre Realforce 87U 45g Topre Realforce 87U 55g: This is where I can pinpoint the time that my psychological state began to shift (and my wallet began to empty). I was fairly content with the 45G 87U, but many Topre enthusiasts online swore that weightier 55-gram switches were the real deal — and I couldn’t ignore them. However, I was less impressed. For slower typists who don’t have to drum out thousands of words per day, I could see the appeal: each key press felt pinpoint and purposeful — like keyboard whack-a-mole. They were simply too heavy for me, however, and led to finger fatigue over longer sessions. Still, it was worth a punt. Happy Hacking Keyboard Professional 2: Anybody worth their Topre salt has at least given the legendary HHKB a go, and I was no exception. While its bag-friendly portability was a real plus point, I never took to its cheap-and-cheerful typing feel. Extremely lightweight, it lacked the reassuring heft of the Realforce and gave off a curiously hollow sensation. Like the NovaTouch, it also suffered from key rattle, and its unusual layout often had me reaching for keys that weren’t there. Finally, its chassis design was too tall for my tastest after coming from the Realforce. In other words: I wasn’t a fan. Leopold FC660C: For a good few months, I’d convinced myself that I’d achieved end-game with the FC660C. Combing the Happy Hacking Keyboard’s portability with switches that felt somewhere in-between Topre’s 45g and 55g switches, the FC660C genuinely stood out from the pack. For a while I regretted letting it go, and only did so because deep down I knew that I preferred the comparatively low-profile design of the Realforce. Realforce boards were the only option from here on in. Topre Realforce 104US: I didn’t realise that this keyboard existed until Keyboard Company sent me it out of the blue, and it made an impact. It possessed two features that I’d never come across in a mech: silencing, and variable-weighted keys. Combined, the 104US was both lightning fast to type on and quiet to boot. On the negative side, it was a big old traditional-sized keyboard with a numberpad, which I didn’t much care for. Did a smaller model exist? Topre Realforce 87U “Silenced”: Of course it did; and, to nobody’s surprise, I ordered one. Once again, I thought that this time would be the end of the road after enjoying using it for a few weeks. Over time, however, I began to miss the deeper and more pronounced “thock” of the non-silenced Realforce, which is a trade off when using the quieter model. Looking at the positives, this latest mech only reinforced my view that Topre’s variable switches are superior for typing than uniform ones. My pinkie fingers in particular felt less stressed after hammering away at keys for hours on end. That left one more keyboard to try… : Here we are: the culmination of nine previous keyboards. I sought a low-profile keyboard, so a Realforce was the only way to go; it needed to possess a tenkeyless layout and non-silenced, variable-weighted keys. In theory, the 87UW had everything — and thankfully it delivered. I’ve been putting this mech through its paces for around a month now, and for the first time I can’t think of how its typing feel could be drastically improved. Topre Realforce 87UW A Uniform 45G 87U (left) and Variable 87UW (right) So, there you have it. Compared to (actual, proper) keyboard enthusiasts who spend all day long lubing their Massdrop-purchased Zealios and learning Dvorak, I’m something of a novice. But I do type many words for my job from one month to the next, and as such owning a comfortable keyboard that enables me to enjoy my work is paramount. After a long search, the 87UW is finally making that happen.

Usually, it’s the first letter of the sender’s name. Unlike on social media in emails, profile pictures don’t seem to be a must: even service emails from Google or Yahoo don’t have an avatar. Remember the days when everyone was shouting: get into tech? Seems not too long ago. I remember the days in the early 2010s when every startup seemed to be so fresh and new. Everything around me felt like it had broken ground. The people involved were so passionate about what they did. Every business was a mystery in a way. Would this be around in a couple of years? Was this going to change the world? We didn’t know but just went along with the adventure of a rapidly changing world. Nowadays, it seems like the big players are making changes and small guys are all doing the same thing(s). This isn’t the tech scene I signed up for. Everyone wonders where all the jobs are these days. My friends are complaining, my cousin’s been struggling and even my mom’s talked about it. Contrary to what everyone seems to believe, I don’t think it’s the fault of AI—the mythical end of all jobs. t seems like everyone’s blaming this fresh technology for everything, and it’s gone all doom and gloom, as if programming is dead. They say no one is getting tech jobs anymore because of AI, but I want to argue that’s not the case. I think the tech is just slowing down like any big boom. It’s kind of getting hard to innovate. The paper and pen industry once had new innovations, but don’t you think there’ll come a time where we can’t really change the “metaphorical pen” of tech companies? Historically every industry experiences ups, downs and stalls. Some die and some grow. Why don’t we consider that for tech? We’ve had our fair share of progress in the last couple of decades. Isn’t it natural for things to slow down a bit…? I’ve seen this recent boom of tech companies and maybe we should slow down a bit. Maybe we have enough tech companies for some fields. It’s possible our focus shouldn’t be too much on the same types of businesses that we keep repeating. Let me give you some examples. E-mail services How many of these do we need? Competition is good and lowers pricing but we don’t need another service that sends emails. There have to be better ideas than this. I saw a y combinator-funded startup called resend the other day. From what I saw it’s quite fresh, and kind of cool but… was this needed? I’ve seen so many competitors like sendgrid, postmark, brevo, AWS SES, etc. Do we really need more? I can’t wrap my head around the logic of funding a business that’s so saturated. They used to fund cool innovative ideas and now it’s another e-mail service or calendar… Job Boards These are beyond overdone. How many job boards are there? Just yesterday I found a remote board called Work Remote Now! and an AI Job board named Mo AI Jobs they both are new job boards seeing some traction but I feel like I’ve seen enough of these that it’s time to stop. I think it’s best founders stray away from job boards especially tech-related job boards that service remote work or AI or whatever fancy trend pops up next. It feels to me like we’re over-saturated with these. Competition is good but consolidation happens for a reason. I’m not saying different job boards are bad but we could slow down a bit don’t you think? It’s time we consider other businesses. ChatGPT Wrappers Some of these are good but is this even a great business decision? I think there will be a wrapper one of these days that’s just really good at customizing and it’ll kill a lot of businesses. This could even be from open AI themselves. It seems that many of these wrappers are directly competing with chatGPT which is a free service. Unless you train and code your own unique AI I think basing your company off an existing LLM isn’t the best. It’s not hard to learn how to prompt, and do you really think people aren’t going to find easy and free ways to customize their ChatGPT prompts? Why wouldn’t they just pay OpenAI directly and get access to the freshest GPT-4 key? I don’t know, maybe I’m wrong, but I’m seeing too many of these nowadays. I think there are definitely some good wrappers out there, and many tech companies have enhanced their product offerings with ChatGPT, but I have doubts about the other wrappers that seem to exist without a real purpose. Too many people coming in for no good reason How many times have you heard that tech is the only career path forward and that everything else will be obsolete? Quite a lot, right? But what if that’s not the case? What if there are other skills that’ll be needed, and just like the early tech founders and coders, you can get in on a new slice of the pie? Entertainment is growing stronger every day, yet we’re all being taught to code. On top of that, there are other engineering fields seeing innovation, like genetic engineering and materials science. Why don’t we promote those? Isn’t it time our attention shifted to other fields? AI will grow, but let’s be real—it’s a very capital-intensive technology that’s specialized and acts more as an enhancer of current products. It’s not going to be the savior of tech. What tech needs are new products we haven’t thought of yet. That’s hard and takes bold risks, but maybe that’s how we truly innovate and keep the industry alive. Okay maybe there are too many services and we’re getting saturated. what next? Maybe we need to start promoting other careers. Programming jobs and new programming companies are great, but the constant saturation of the same old companies and the oversupply of new grads chasing the golden ticket wage is getting out of hand. Hey tech scene, let’s take a step back, huh? Let’s focus less on the same old and more on the new. And please, don’t create another ChatGPT wrapper. It's getting out of hand. Just my opinion.
