This is my conclusion after giving several workshops last week. The participants were all inspired and convinced that the exponential growth of technology will have an enormous impact on the future of work and society as a whole.

And don’t forget all the voice activated gizmos either. There’s a lot going on.

The Irony Of All That Tech (at CES) & No Power.

The press and some <a href="https://hackernoon.com/tagged/tech" target="_blank">tech</a> leaders are trying to get us all scared of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Even the most daring entrepreneur of our time, <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2017/aug/14/elon-musk-ai-vastly-more-risky-north-korea" target="_blank">Elon Musk, thinks we should be deathly afraid</a>. I believe Elon Musk is exaggerating because there is still a long way to go before we get to <a href="https://www.wired.com/2017/04/the-myth-of-a-superhuman-ai/" target="_blank">Artificial Super Intelligence (ASI)</a>. And even ASI is not a scary proposition.

What Is Explainable AI? How Does It Affect Your Job?

The most recent episode of <a href="http://www.npr.org/programs/invisibilia" target="_blank">Invisibilia (a fantastic podcast, I encourage you to subscribe)</a>, centers around a car/truck accident between a family of four (a mother, father and two girls) and a truck driver. Sudden flash rains, lost control and one person gets killed (I won’t spoil the story) and this leads to an Invisibilia team deep dive into emotions. While listening to the episode, I remembered sitting in an MBA Ethics Class and the conversation was on the ‘<a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2015/10/trolley-problem-history-psychology-morality-driverless-cars/409732/" target="_blank">Trolley Problem</a>’. The question was, if you are the driver of a Trolley with faulty brakes whom would you choose to hit between the five unsuspecting workers directly on your path or you could turn the trolley and hit one unsuspecting worker? The dilemma that you have to actively decide to save some lives to kill one is a moral gray area with no right or wrong answer. At the point in the class when we were having the conversation, I didn’t really think too deeply about it; it was an abstract conversation about a situation I didn’t really think I would ever find myself in. It was more of an intellectual exercise than a real one to me.

Who's To Blame If One Gets Killed In An (Uber/Tesla/Waymo) Self-Driving Car?

In 1878, Christopher Sholes was granted the patent on the QWERTY keyboard layout. He’d been granted the patent on the <a href="http://amzn.to/2pcTHOi" target="_blank">typewriter in 1868</a>, 10 years earlier. His original typewriter had problems with tangling mechanical keys and the QWERTY keyboard was his solution to broken keyboards and frustrated typists. The QWERTY keyboard favored left-handed typists (at a time when most technology favored right-handed users) and placed less commonly used letters under a typists resting fingers. Sholes, thinking very much like a founder who wanted to sell a lot of product, <a href="https://keyshorts.com/blogs/blog/41838657-31-weird-fun-facts-about-computer-keyboards-you-didnt-know-about" target="_blank">ensured the word TYPEWRITER was designed into the top row of the keyboard</a> ensuring salespeople could easily demo the product. That one decision played a big part in the makeup of the typewriter.
