If you would have asked me a couple of weeks ago, I would have said PlayStation was done making announcements for the year. After a quiet Summer skipping E3, Sony returned in September to bring the heat with a . packed PlayStation Showcase Yet, here we are with another PlayStation State of Play under our belts before the Holidays. While it is easy to dismiss this light sprinkling of demos, indies, and DLC surprises as the most boring presentation to date, there’s plenty for fans to get stoked on. 1. 99 Problems But a Niche Ain’t One I’m not apologizing for my Jay-Z pun. Also, PlayStation rightly isn’t apologizing for showcasing games that it knows aren’t for everyone. Yet, they find a way to have a spread of games that speak to a variety of niche gamers. At least something piqued your interest. We saw an online 3rd person battle royale game set in the Let it Die universe, a nondescript kart racer, a fighting game, a new action JRPG from Square Enix, a narrative music game revolving around the band OFK, a new installment of Five Nights at Freddy’s, and a cute survival adventure game that looks like something out of studio Laika. Playstation is embracing a diverse audience of gamers. 2. PlayStation’s Indie Darlings. I love to see Sony givin’ a shit about indies. Sony has been synonymous with the weird side of gaming since the early days of the PS1 when it was easier for the avant-garde and outcast developers to produce their games on cheaper disc formats compared to cartridges. Sony is still giving love and space to these kinds of studios, providing them a spotlight all to themselves. Not only are these games getting their 5-seconds of fame, they are also getting substantial support from Sony. Bugsnax was greenlit for a free DLC drop coming early next year, and new projects like First Class Trouble are getting day one PlayStation Plus status. While these games don’t look like home runs, Sony is making an effort to get these games in players' hands for cheap, and they will likely give you a really good time if you give it a chance. I also love that Little Devil Inside is being treated like a star. It was first announced in a major show (ps5 announcement), it was hyped by a teaser-tweet pre-show, then headlined today's showcase with a meaty trailer. Speaking of… 3. The Devil You Know and the Devil You Don’t Little Devil inside looks to be more substantial than I thought, and I’m way more excited now. The trailer showed off a gamut of gameplay features. Our little monster hunter will be using survival mechanics like crafting to navigate this creepy world with Burton-esque looking monsters. The combat looks to be timing-based, emphasizing counters and parries in a Souls-lite sort of way, while bigger baddies may require special items and puzzle-solving to tame. It was encouraging to get such an extended look at Little Devil Inside. The game dropped off the face of the earth on the PlayStation website prior to being slated for a Fall 2021 release. While delays are never fun, it seems the developer was quiet because this game is bigger than we thought. 4. Sony’s Getting Political… Front and center of the PlayStation State of Play was the singer of OFK wearing a Black Trans Lives Matter shirt. Even though this is obviously the stance of the band and developer rather than Sony, this isn’t the first time they have allowed political statements to be represented in major ways. If you remember, Sony’s prized exclusive Miles Morales at the PS5’s launch (big deal) had a mission where Miles finds a huge Black Lives Matter mural painted in his honor. Depending on where you are in the world, these are still significant slogans to stand by. Choosing to include these in PlayStation's big moments like a launch title or a State of Play says something. Good on you, Sony! 5. New Games Are Still Gonna Be Hard to Come By… If you were disappointed by the lack of headliners today, buckle up. These look to be the caliber of appetizers that will be filling out the long waits for triple-A main courses. As I’ve said before, I’m not sure that’s a bad thing. If you’re down to stop and smell the roses a little bit, I think there is some great fun to be had with any of the games seen today. And if nothing speaks to you, that’s just fine. You can be a Grinch on top of your mountain looking down on the likes of me having a grand ol' time playing more Bugsnax. 6. KartRider: Drift Coming in Hot KartRider: Drift definitely wins the gutsiest game of the show. So much so, that I’m giving it it’s own take at number 6. For several reasons. With the effort everyone is making to put familiar characters together in go-kart and fighting games…(Mario Kart, Garfield kart, Sonic Racers, Crash Team Racing, Smash Bros., Nickelodeon Brawlstars, etc.) KartRider: Drift is plain as hell. And I kinda love it. These avatars look like someone made Bomberman out of Mii’s with none of the passion. It’s so weird. Like any other kart racer, you get items, including a giant banana wearing sunglasses--like a big f*** you to the man over at Nintendo. They had better have doubled down on making that game really fun to play, or I can’t imagine anyone caring about this game. That being said, I’m irrationally rooting for it. Consider me on the KartRider bandwagon. 7. Late to the 3rd Parties What about the no-shows? It’s a little weird we didn’t see Stray, Solar Ash, or Ghostwire, all games that have been previously delayed but aren’t too far out. There’s still plenty of unknowns regarding these titles, I’m not sure if we should be concerned. Is PlayStation just confident those games are going to do well in the case of Little Devil Inside? With how close some of these titles are, you’d think there would be one last showing to get people excited. Final Thoughts on the PlayStation State of Play I could see how many could be disappointed with PlayStations showing. Compared to announcements like Wolverine, Spiderman 2, KOTOR, and God of War 2, this presentation was pretty weak. If it wasn't clear to you already, the State of Play branding should temper your expectations compared to the Playstation Showcases. Nevertheless, I got some overall positive feelings from Sony’s effort today. There is a little something for everybody on the 3rd party and indie fronts, and there are still plenty of big games on the horizon if nothing spoke to you today. 7 Thoughts After PlayStation’s State of Play: Blake's Hot Takes [Part 1]

Sony isn't done making announcements this year and surprised many with yet another State of Play. Expectations were set beforehand by Sony, explaining that this was a showcase for 3rd-party studios, meaning there wouldn't be any signs of Horizon: Forbidden West here. Sorry friends. While this show wasn't nearly the caliber of their PlayStation Showcase, which shocked the world with two new mainline Insomniac titles, a KOTOR remake, and God of War Ragnarok gameplay, there were plenty of little things to perk up any gamer. September Here's what was announced. 1. Deathverse: Let it Die In a surprising twist of fate, the overwhelming odd free-to-play Souls-like Let It Die is getting a free-to-play Battle Royale counterpart next Spring 2022. Deathverse: Let it Die is seemingly capturing all the awkward heart of its predecessor and will likely leave you scratching your head thinking, "WTF am I looking at?". But, that seems to be a source of pride for developer Supertrick Games. Even though I was left speechless and a little confused, I couldn't help but be intrigued by what this eccentric game is offering. 2. We Are OFK We Are OFK is a narrative experience revolving around an indie pop band of the same name. Even though this game isn't for me, I'm glad things like this exist. Complete with dialogue choices, dating sim mechanics, and interactive music videos, the game will span several episodes telling the story of the band's origins in Los Angeles. I'm probably more into music experiences in games more akin to Thom Yorke's but We Are OFK is definitely for someone. Kid A Mnesia Exhibition, 3. Bugsnax: Isle of Bigsnax DLC This is my personal highlight of the show. Hugely underrated PlayStation 5 launch title Bugsnax is getting free DLC in early 2022. With a new island to explore, a dozen new bugs to catch, and the ability to customize your own little hut, there looks to be plenty to do in this bizarre world of Bugsnax. With honest-to-god good writing and interesting characters, a decent bug-catching puzzle system, and overwhelming charm, I cannot wait to get back into this game that was my first Platinum trophy on PS5. If you haven't already, play this game. You monsters. 4. Five Nights At Freddy's: Security Breach It keeps going. Immensely popular franchise Five Nights at Freddy's is getting yet another installment on PlayStation. As a family-friendly horror jaunt through an alternate reality of Chuck-E-Cheese robotic mascots, this game will appeal to a lot of people... Those people just don't include me. 5. Death's Door is Coming to PlayStation Previously exclusive to Xbox and PC, indie hit Death's Door is making its way to PlayStation and Switch on November 23. A top-down adventure game emulating the likes of classic Zelda, Death's Door breaks ground with its own beautifully morbid art style. The game nails gameplay and puzzle mechanics as a standout in the genre and rightly deserves a more widespread audience on new consoles. Death's Door is a must-play if you missed it. 6. King of Fighters XV As disconnected as I am from fighting games, I never would have guessed King of Fighters had so many installments. The 15th iteration is getting a free open beta test in November for those interested. The game is set to release February 22nd, 2022. I'm an outsider but King of Fighters XV passes my eye test, I'm down for some occasional casual arcade face-smashing. 7. KartRider: Drift KartRider: Drift looks to be a wonderfully generic kart racer in the same vein as MarioKart. But with far more customization options and arguably none of the charm. Which, I don't mind because, for a game that has had a few previous titles as early as 2004, it seems to have a significant player base and fandom. If it plays well, I'm sold. There are far too many kart racers and fighting games cornering the market with gaming and cinematic universes. Sometimes I just want something that works and is a little weird. The best thing is, it will be free-to-play and you can register for an open beta test. 8. First Class Trouble Before you say anything about this game copying Among Us, just know that I grew up playing Mafia with human beings and playing cards...the OG way. However, with the immensely popular free-to-play game has permeated pop culture, it was only a matter of time before someone tried to piggyback. First Class Trouble pits androids against residents in a spaceship. Players will use deception, sabotage and social deduction to figure out who is who in this wacky game coming to PlayStation Plus subscribers on November 2. While the game looks rough around the edges, it looks like a blast to play. I'm getting similar vibes to Knockout City on GamePass, another accessible title that while wasn't perfect, served its purpose as a great game to play with friends for a month or so. 9. Star Ocean: The Divine Force It's not a presentation without Square Enix. The Star Ocean franchise has a decent following, and The Divine Force looks to be checking all the boxes for a solid open-world action JRPG. The market has been flooded the last few years with games in this genre, and I don't necessarily see anything that sets Star Ocean apart enough to pull in too many new fans. That being said, I can see this game being a really fun diversion if it manages to release in a quieter part of 2022. 10. Little Devil Inside I've been pumped on Little Devil Inside ever since its initial reveal in 2020. After previously being projected for a Summer 2021 release date, Sony was concerningly silent on it's promising indie. Development likely slowed after ; however, developer Neostream looks to be back on track. a controversy in enemy stereotyping lead to a few redesigns Little Devil Inside looks to be a robust take on a survival action-adventure narrative, channeling the heart of a feature animated film rather than an indie game. The game looks amazing and seems to have plenty of gameplay systems in place, like combat, crafting, and survival mechanics, to keep players engaged. The updated release window of 2022 is incredibly wide. While that doesn't make me feel super optimistic, the in-depth look we received today re-sparked my hype for Little Devil Inside. Final Thoughts on PlayStation's State of Play Sony managed to fit a lot of content in 20 minutes. Which is good! Because, with so many niche games, you probably were underwhelmed by a majority of this presentation. Sony respected its audience's time, moving quickly from game to game, not lingering too long on anything in particular. With at least a little something for everyone, I think this State of Play was 'good enough,' and offered plenty of fun and unique gaming experiences for a year that is fairly slow in gaming. PlayStation State of Play: Here's Everything You Missed (October 2021)

For many years now, Discord has been the go-to for voice chatting and online communication, especially for people into gaming. Content creators use it, and even companies use it to communicate with colleagues. With how popular it has become, many wondered if it would ever get full integration with consoles. Well, it seems that possibility is closer than we’ve thought. PlayStation Discord Partnership Details In a , Jim Ryan, President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE), announced that PlayStation and Discord have formed a partnership. He goes on to say that the SIE has made a “minor investment as part of Discord’s Series H round.” blog post Although we don’t know in full terms what this means for PlayStation and Discord, we do get a glimpse of what it could mean. In the post, Ryan also says, “Together, our teams are already hard at work connecting Discord with your social and gaming experience on PlayStation Network. Our goal is to bring the Discord and PlayStation experiences closer together on console and mobile starting early next year…” Whether this means an official Discord app on PlayStation consoles, or something more minor, remains to be seen. But it’s big news for one of the most popular communicating services to team up with a video game company. 3 years ago, Discord and Xbox to allow users to link their Discord and Xbox accounts. Meaning that when you were online playing video games, your Discord friends would be able to see what you were playing. worked together But this was called a “collaboration” and a “team-up”, much different than an investment and announcing a “partnership”. It should also be noted that it was Microsoft was in talks with Discord to buy the company for $10 billion earlier this year, a deal Discord clearly declined. reported We’re excited to see what a PlayStation and Discord partnership could mean for either company, and we can’t wait for more news to release. For decades, fighting games have been a staple of the gaming industry. Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, and Tekken have become popular franchises that are pop culture mainstays. For non-fighting game fans, it might be overwhelming to jump into the genre. So, here are the 5 best fighting games on PlayStation’s subscription service, PS Now. Best Fighting Games on PS Now 1. Tekken 7 The next installment after Tekken Tag 2, Tekken 7 was released in 2015, and it’s still being supported with new characters, stages, and improvements being added. Tekken 7 sees the conclusion of the long standing father-son rivalry between Heihachi Mishima and his son, Kazuya. A bloody feud that spans all the way back to the first game, the rivalry could only end in one way, with one of them dead. Although the story mode isn’t the greatest, it does have some fantastic moments that wrap up the Mishima story in a satisfying way. The game also deserves credit for doing a good job informing new players with the lore of Tekken, and adding weight to the relationship between Heihachi and Kazuya. Where the game shines is in its arcade and online mode. With a large assortment of characters, the game has a good selection of fun and unique fighters. You can change your characters to your liking by customizing their outfits, giving them weapons, and changing their artwork panel. If professional wrestling is more your style, Bane is the character for you. All of this makes it one of the best fighting games on PS Now. 4. Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix One of the most popular fighting games of all time, not to mention an influential video game overall, Street Fighter 2 is still revered to this day. It’s had many iterations since its original launch, including this remake of an iteration, Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix. Released in 2008 for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, this title is perfect for nostalgic fans, and for newcomers who never experienced the original. Here’s everything you need to know about the price, content, and everything else. How Does PS Now Work? What Exactly is it? PS Now is a subscription service that allows you to stream or download a catalog of games for a monthly or annual price. According to the PS Now , subscribers can play games from the catalog on their PlayStation 4/5 or their PC. website They can only stream the games on their PC, however, they are free to download it on their console. And if you stream the games, the progress will be saved and you’ll be able to continue on either platform. When Sony announced that the PS5 would launch in November, I decided that it was time to . I read a lot about preorder fiascos with previous launches, and even more about the risks of being an early adopter of a next-gen console, but I didn’t let any reading discourage me. say goodbye to my old Xbox 360 I discarded buying the new Xbox Series X mostly because of the game list I’m looking forward to playing, with titles like ‘Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales’, ‘The Last of Us Part II’, or ‘Horizon: Forbidden West’. PS5 preorders started in September with and frustration for longtime fans; retailers jumped the gun with the release date, and scalpers bought any PS5 they could get their bots on, creating a severe scarcity problem. Sony even , but the problem persisted and almost two months later it’s practically impossible to find a retailer with PS5 in stock. Even after all those struggles, Sony still managed to ship PS5 in its first four weeks, and it’s expected to produce up to 18 million units in 2021. significant issues apologized 3.4 million I was lucky enough to get one through Best Buy and my Thanksgiving weekend was bliss, jumping between NYC buildings as Spider-Man. It seems however that some people are already with this too; the resistance stopped working for some users. Some of those users reported broken springs as the culprit of their controller issues, although at least it isn’t a generalized problem. having troubles Every game I’ve seen so far impressed me with amazing graphics. Playing ‘Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered’ or ‘Uncharted 4’ feels like participating in an interactive movie, and ‘Red Dead Redemption 2’ feels like having a vacation in the wilderness. Seeing games with real-time ray tracing is mesmerizing, and when combined with 60 FPS it’s truly breathtaking. This video provides a really good explanation of why ray tracing on a next-gen console is such a big deal. Unfortunately, there are very few titles currently developed with PS5 exclusively in mind. Very few games take full advantage of ray tracing, the controller haptics, or high frame rate graphics. ‘Marvel’s Spider-Man’ is one of those titles, released in 2018 and upgraded in its 2020 Remaster to push the PS5 to the limit. Of course, backward compatibility is a great feature for people like me, since I can now enjoy all of those PlayStation 4 exclusives that I missed playing years ago. Most of those games work well, but without any significant difference when compared with a PS4 Pro. For this reason, developers are not rushing to embrace these next-gen consoles just yet. Most of the AAA video games announced for 2021 will also release on PS4. It can’t be any other way, given that PlayStation had worldwide as of August 2020. That’s a big market that cannot be ignored, and it means that we should expect PS4 to still have a few years of active life ahead. This also means that games may be more expensive to release, as developers will focus on producing a PS4 version and an enhanced PS5 version. 113M active users This dichotomy in game versions has already started causing headaches to some game publishers. CD Projekt Red, developer of the popular series ‘The Witcher’, recently was under fire for the way it handled the release of its latest game ‘Cyberpunk 2077’. The game launched in early December 2020 as a PS4/Xbox One game (with a PS5/Xbox Series X version scheduled for 2021), but it was riddled with so many bugs that Sony decided to pull the game from its digital store; interestingly enough, the PS4 game performed better on PS5 than on PS4. What seems clear by now is that the PS5 doesn’t have any consistent hardware issues (nothing like the at least). All known incidents fall under what we should expect from any product launch at scale. Xbox 360 “Red Ring of Death” problem It’s been a little over a month since I started using the PS5, and given all the above I consider it a winning machine. Simply put, there is no PC under $500 that can reach the same gaming performance and visual fidelity as a PlayStation 5 or an Xbox Series X, so next-gen consoles are certainly democratizing gaming. Since we’re still a couple of years away from a full switch to focus exclusively on next-gen consoles, this means the PS5 will likely be relevant for the whole decade, way after the PlayStation 6 is announced around 2026. Hey Peeps! On March 16th, it was revealed that Sony Interactive Entertainment Inc., the owner of the PlayStation brand, filed for an NFT-related patent. The patent submitted by Sony is seeking to create the digital framework to allow for NFTs to be owned and transferred across different gaming platforms. The filing shows that Sony originally filed this specific patent back in November of 2021 and is now just finally being published. To my understanding, a patent is normally published before it is officially granted to the applicant. This means that we can expect Sony to be granted relatively soon, and as a result, we may possibly see some NFTs hit the PlayStation world in the near future. Sony has gradually amassed arguably the most diverse and extensive catalog of exclusive video games on a console. Since the release of the PS4, Sony has shown a commitment to making best-in-class single-player AAA video games, and it shows on this ultimate PlayStation exclusives list. Fans of the console and newcomers have plenty to sink their teeth into on what is becoming place to play exclusive games. the What Counts as a PlayStation Exclusive? At the time of writing, all of these games are exclusive to the PlayStation console–meaning, they are unavailable on its direct competitors, the Xbox Series S/X and Nintendo Switch. Some games, like God of War and Horizon, have been made available on PC. As this is a gray area in terms of the console wars, these games are still included on this list. It should also be noted that both first and third-party exclusives are included in this list. How the Ultimate PlayStation Exclusives Are Ranked This rating system is based on metrics like Metacritic scores and sales, in order to objectively rank the best exclusives, PlayStation has to offer. Only games that have sold 1 million or more copies have been included in this list. Because there can be a disparity between critical reception and sales numbers, I added a half-point per million sales to the Metacritic score to compensate relatively fairly for games that sold well. For example, Persona 5 has a higher rating than God of War on Metacritic by one point, but God of War has 4x the sales numbers. Therefore, God of War is ranked higher. These rankings are also not necessarily a reflection of my personal rankings. Now, onto the PlayStation exclusives. The Ultimate PlayStation Exclusives List 1. God of War 94 on Metacritic in sales mil 20 God of War (2018) is the gold standard for franchise reboots. The rage-filled, testosterone-pumping anti-hero from the God of War series transformed into a multi-faceted character–communicating depths of emotion in an epic father-son tale. Of course, the rage is still there. Ripping demons to shreds with Kratos’ bare hands has felt so satisfying. This time around though, Sony Santa Monica focused that angsty aspect of their game into a beautifully complex narrative. And, to pull this game off with cutscenes in one long take in order to further immerse gamers in the narrative is just icing on the cake. never zero 2. The Last of Us Remastered 95 on Metacritic in sales 17+ mil across ps3 and ps4 The Last of Us is a game that needs no introduction. This was the game I heard about as an Xbox 360 owner that inevitably pulled me into the PlayStation ecosystem after my second “red ring of death” meltdown. The Last of Us commanded the attention of gamers everywhere as a new tier of video game storytelling that could be deeply compelling. While the brutal story doesn’t particularly encourage casually replaying this game, The remaster generally holds up. And, the narrative is up could still be considered the best in video games, depending on who you ask. 3. Uncharted 4: A Thief's End 93 on Metacritic in sales Over 15 mil Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End bookended the Nathan Drake saga with about as epic a finish as you could ask for. For a game that feels more like a trope-filled summer blockbuster flick, Uncharted 4 manages to do just enough to make this game feel fresh. Nathan Drake’s traversal definitely feels samey as you climb epic set pieces and hunt for those ever-present bright yellow handholds, while its linear progression feels a bit long in more the tooth for a 15-hour campaign. Regardless, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End is well worth the playthrough, and considered one of the best PlayStation exclusives for good reason. 4. Persona 5 Royal 95 on Metacritic +3.2 for persona 5   in sales 1.8 mil copies https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lpu7q2G93qs Metacritic has my back. Persona 5 Royal is the best-rated playstation exclusives on Metacritic and criminally underplayed. still The daunting 100+ hour campaign is understandably a turn-off–but how can you at least give the best rated Playstation game on Metacritic the ol’ college try? Persona 5 Royal is often on sale and vanilla Persona 5 is included in the PS+ Collection (also consistently on sale otherwise), so you have no excuses, my dear friends. Play this game. not 5. Marvel’s Spider-Man 87 on Metacritic in sales 20 mil Marvel’s Spider-Man could have cashed in on simply existing as a Spider-Man web-swinging sim and we all would have been wildly content. Insomniac kicked the door down on the superhero video game scene by emphasizing the sheer pleasure in traversal as our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. On top of this, there’s a genuinely good story, solid acting performances, and a flat-out fun video game here. Besides the Arkham Asylum series, I can’t think of a better superhero game out there. 6. The Last of Us Part II 93 on Metacritic in sales 4+ mill opening weekend (unclear since July 2020) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9vKTikTO4dE The polarizing follow-up to the Last of Us is impossible to sum up in a mere paragraph. The Last of Us Part II, while divisive, opens up a whole mess of narrative discourse for gamers after the credits roll. Naughty Dog created a story that challenges gamers to reconsider stereotypes of heroes and villains (which is common in literature and film btw) in a more open way that hasn’t really been explored in video games. For better or worse, the narrative is exactly that–challenging. I believe the challenge is well worth it as The Last of Us Part II offers a masterful blend of storytelling, with more polished gameplay than its predecessor, in order to create an experience that transcends its medium. 7. Horizon Zero Dawn 89 on Metacritic in sales 10 mil Guerilla Games created what might be THE quintessential video game: hunting robot dinosaurs in a speculative future where humans have reverted to the role of cavemen in a post-prehistoric world. Even though this sounds like satire, Horizon is a good video game not to be taken lightly and is perhaps the most exciting new IP for PlayStation. very Horizon has already won over a loyal fan base. Protagonist Aloy is one of the coolest new characters in video games. Combat feels creative as players try to figure out which arrows to use and where to find weak spots on imposing robotic creatures in what feels more like puzzle-solving than direct combat. The world feels both alien and familiar, making Horizon Zero Dawn a captivating one to explore. For the first game is what will absolutely lead to more PlayStation exclusives, Guerilla Games has set a high bar for themselves. And, they’re just getting started. 8. NieR Automata: Game of the YoRHa Edition 91 on Metacritic in sales 6 mil https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p68k3U8WzRU The NieR franchise is the Swiss Army Knife of video games. Developer Platinum Games has a knack for creatively fusing genres like hack and slash, shoot-em-up, JRPG number crunching, and platforming mechanics into their melancholic narrative-driven experiences. NieR Automata is arguably the series best. NieR keeps players on their toes with ever-fresh evolving gameplay and genuinely surprising plot twists that tell a complex tale of shifting perspectives. Don’t let the drab art direction and deceptively samey JRPG themes fool you, fans of NieR Automata know this game has one of the best stories in video games. 9. Bloodborne 92 on Metacritic in sales over ) 2 mil (2015 The horribly wonderful Lovecraftian hellscape of Bloodborne has won over casual gamers to this punishing genre of games left and right. Developer FromSoftware games are not for the faint of heart. The Dark Souls series became a genre unto itself and championed because of their difficulty. the battle cry to “Get Gud” Bloodborne has a more enticing art style that makes outside observers curious, and the faster tempo to the combat is arguably easier than the slower, methodical Souls games. Although doesn’t seem like a great word to use. Due to these factors, more gamers who would previously shudder at a Souls game have given Bloodborne a shot, leading to high sales for such a niche game. Hell, even tried Bloodborne. easier I Bloodborne is also surprisingly deep in its world-building and story. Don’t let its rough exterior offend you, there is a beautiful game here. And, is often recommended as the best Souls game for newcomers. 10. Demon’s Souls 92 on Metacritic in sales 1.4 mil https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JiqGi3GMTko The Demon’s Souls ground-up remake was the big horse Sony brought to the PlayStation 5 launch. The sense of scale and graphical prowess was like nothing else compared to Sony’s full-length titles, which is a bold move seeing that Demon’s Souls is for a very specific gamer. Demon’s Souls sets a high bar for remakes as the original is lovingly interpreted in some of the best fidelity possible. Sucker Punch masterfully created a combat system that allows players to oscillate between stealth and head-to-head combat on a whim to defeat the Mongol hordes invading Tsushima. The progression of skills and abilities allows both approaches to improve fluidly together, allowing for satisfying improvisation on the part of the player. You can use smoke bombs, poison darts, and grappling hooks to effortlessly take out your enemies one-by-one from the shadows… or kick the front door in with a little “f*ck around and find out” flair. Both power-fantasies feel just as satisfying. And, damn. The art direction and graphics are some of my favorites on the PS5. 12. Final Fantasy VII Remake 87 on Metacritic l  in sales Over 5 mi One of the best JRPG’s on PlayStation got a modern facelift, what’s not to love about that? Final Fantasy VII Remake is the first part of a series of games re-telling the heroics of Cloud and Co., expanding on the original cannon. While there are slight changes to the story, Final Fantasy VII Remake sticks to its roots following the FFVII story up until leaving Midgard and has earned high praise from fans and critics alike. The game also eloquently riffs on gameplay. FFVII Remake integrates action RPG elements that help the game feel fresh and modern. It became one of the fastest-selling PlayStation games on its release and its Part 2 follow-up is hotly anticipated. 13. Astro’s Playroom 83 on Metacritic 13.4 and counting? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lu5VXrEqgco Okay, so this is cheating a little bit. , because Astro’s Playroom is generously included with the PlayStation 5 a la Wii Sports, copies sold are matched with the astronomical PS5 sales as long as the game remains a complimentary add-in–which is fortunate for Astro’s sales. Technically Fortunately for gamers, Astro’s Playroom is more than just a tech demo, it’s a nostalgic jaunt through PlayStation’s rich history and a surprisingly fun way to spend 3-5 hours experiencing the PS5’s new features. It’s highly rated on Metacritic for a reason and is a “must-play” if you have a PlayStation 5. 14. Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart 88 on Metacritic __ __il in sales 1.1 m Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart took all the prowess of the mighty PS5 to create what could be the perfect 3D platformer. Insomniac didn’t try to reinvent the wheel with too many bells and whistles in its follow-up to its wonderful Ratchet and Clank (2016) remake but instead perfected every phase of execution. Rift Apart has jaw-dropping graphics, snappy gameplay, and instantaneous load time–which makes this admittedly dated genre of video game feel novel on the PlayStation 5. And, as per Insomniacs MO, the traversal and overwhelming arsenal of wacky guns make this game a joy to play from start to finish. 15. Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales 85 on Metacritic in sales 6.5 mil Spider-Man: Miles Morales brings back everything you loved about Insomniac’s Spider-Man and arguably improves the formula in every way. You might scratch your head at the ambiguous $40 price tag and shorter campaign, but this has all the intention and love behind it that OG Spider-Man did. Miles Morales gets sweet new abilities, new enemies, a great story, in a fresh wintry take on the familiar Manhattan. These revamped qualities make this Spidey anthology game feel much more substantial than its 8-ish hour campaign would imply. It’s far more robust than mere DLC, while being bite-sized enough to tease fans for what’s to come in the upcoming Spider-Man 2. 16. Death Stranding: Director’s Cut 85 on Metacritic in sales 5 mil https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QlLEmu8c-Vk Leave it to Kojima to make a AAA video game revolving around a futuristic mailman using baby energy to navigate an apocalyptic wasteland infested with ghouls. Okay, maybe that was oversimplified and exaggerated. But, this game is weird. Even for Kojima. Death Stranding isn’t for everyone, but successfully challenges the blurred lines between video games and arthouse projects. The game’s main mechanics revolve around carefully balancing haphazard boxes to be delivered to stations across treacherous terrain. Even though this seems like a recipe for a boring-ass video game, it’s far more interesting than you’d think. “Fun” may not be the right word to describe the experience of playing Death Stranding, but it is meditative, thoughtful, and poignant…as long as you can handle around 40 hours of what amounts to glorified fetch quests. 17. Uncharted: Lost Legacy 84 on Metacritic in sales 1+ mil Uncharted: Lost Legacy is a robust side story to Naughty Dog’s Uncharted 4. Lost Legacy set the stage for games like Spider-Man Miles Morales–offering more content and polish than mere DLC, while being priced at $40 and being much shorter than a full game. This experiment has its hits and misses. For fans of Uncharted this game is more of the same, for better or worse. You do many of the same things you’ve been doing throughout Uncharted 1-4, and while Lost Legacy plays around with open-world aspects, it ultimately feels empty. Where Lost Legacy shines is in its characters, story, and gorgeous environments. The game follows Chloe and Nadine on their own adventure in India. The relationship between these two characters is perhaps the best in the series which has its fair share of dynamic duos. The story and cinematic moments are also worth experiencing despite the tired gameplay. 18. The Last Guardian 82 on Metacritic in sales 1.29 mil The Last Guardian was the comeback kid story of the century. almost Stuck in development hell for almost a decade, Team Ico overcame delays, technical difficulties, and staff departures to release this ambitious game against all odds in 2016. Unfortunately, it seems the turmoil wasn’t kind to the Last Guardian’s final landing, as the gameplay was highly criticized for being dodgy at best. Despite feeling like a game that should have come out on the PS3, the Last Guardian is absolutely worth playing for its charming world and thoughtful narrative. The relationship between boy and bird-dog is genuinely compelling, backed by a convincing environment and some of the best music and sound design in video games. It’s just a shame that the gameplay effectively obstructs players from these transcendent gaming experiences. 19. Days Gone 71 on Metacritic ~ 8-9 mil units https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FKtaOY9lMvM Days Gone is a bit of an enigma on this list. While not entirely a flop, Days Gone was met with a resounding shrug by critics and gamers alike upon release. The unfair and unfortunate comparison with its alter ego The Last of Us Part II may have played some part in the game’s reception as both games came out a mere year apart and revolve around post-apocalyptic zombie narratives in the Pacific Northwest. However, while controversy has surrounded the actual sales numbers, Days Gone has found fans due to its creative zombie horde mechanics and Sons of Anarchy in the Apocalypse tone. I know it’s trite to play zombie game, but Days Gone doesn’t deserve the shade it got, and I think it could be one of the more underrated games on this list. another Final Thoughts on the Ultimate PlayStation Exclusives There’s plenty to get excited about if you’re a PlayStation fan. Sony has proved time and again their commitment to creating high-caliber games that range from epic, whimsical, to straight-up bizarre. Unfortunately, it’s still really difficult, if not almost impossible, to find a PS5 in stock, both online and in-person. I get it; FOMO sucks, and the ol’ PS4 is starting to lose the luster it once had. But let’s reflect on the current state of PS5 one year later and ask, is the PS5 worth it? keep flying off the shelves Are The New PS5 Features Worth It? The PS5 was quite the leap forward in graphical capabilities. 4K TVs have increasingly found themselves inside more homes, and Sony knew that a big jump in horsepower would be necessary for this generation. On top of that, more gamers are asking for 60 fps support after multiple years of 30 fps being the default, in favor of high-quality visuals. Console gaming has always been a balancing act of great visuals or smooth gameplay. With PS5, however, Sony says you can have your cake and eat it too with both smooth gameplay and next-generation graphics thanks to the cutting-edge AMD Zen 2 and RNDA 2 CPU and graphics card. These new consoles are still giving mid-range PCs a run for their money one year later. Games like Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart look about as close to a playable Pixar movie that we have gotten so far due to increased polygon counts and real-time raytraced reflections Ray tracing, in particular, has been quite the game-changer and one of the true killer features of next-gen games, with lighting and reflections looking as accurate to the real world as we have ever gotten within the medium. Additionally, more and more games are launching with 60 fps modes to take advantage of all that power. Even more impressively, games such as Spider-Man: Miles Morales feature ray-traced performance modes with compute-heavy ray-traced reflections turned on while still retaining smooth 60 fps gameplay. It is simply gaming nirvana. Moreover, this first year of PS5 games has made ray tracing a staple rather than a gimmick and can only be witnessed on a next-gen console. A Better User Experience However, graphics aren’t everything, and the user experience is where new consoles live and die. And boy, is the user experience on PS5 great, thanks to the new NVME solid-state drive. Once you go SSD, you can never go back, and I find it to be the most appreciable addition to the PS5 by far. thanks to the lightning-fast speeds SSDs offer compared to slower and older mechanical hard drives that last-gen consoles are still tied to. In games like Demon’s Souls, fast travel is nothing more than a simple transition animation. Blink, and you’ll miss it. In Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, you can instantly jump between entire worlds with zero loading or even as much as a stutter. If I had to boil it down to one thing that makes the PS5 worth it, at least on a hardware level, it would be the SSD, and it’s not even close. Loading times are practically a thing of the past The DualSense Controller One of the last key features of the PS5 is the slick new DualSense controller. For the one year that I have had the DualSense, I can easily say that it is one of the best controllers I have ever held. It is weighty, ergonomically designed, and feels great in the hand. The most significant feature of the DualSense is its haptic feedback motors and dynamic triggers that are something you have to experience for yourself to understand the hype behind it. Have you ever been carrying a heavy bag in your hand for a long time, and you can begin to feel the handles digging into the grooves of your fingers? Let me tell you that while playing Death Stranding: Director’s Cut on PS5, somehow, the wizards in charge of mapping trigger features found a way to mimic that feeling with the left and right dynamic triggers as you hold parcels in your hands during gameplay. With the DualSense, you have to feel it to believe it. I will say that even though these features are excellent, I wouldn’t go out of my way to chase down a PS5 specifically for the DualSense experience. It is simply the cherry on top of the PS5 but far from the main course. Does The PS5 Have Any Good Games? Hardware is great and all, but it means nothing without the games. So how is the PlayStation’s first-party output after a year? Currently, the only games playable exclusively on PS5 are: Demon’s Souls Astro’s Playroom Returnal Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered Destruction AllStars I would say this is a great start compared to PS4’s launch year lineup, which by most accounts was a flop. Does anyone remember Knack? It’s also worth mentioning the tremendous critical acclaim for all of these games; Demon’s Souls is currently sitting at the top of the stack with a 92 on Metacritic, and Ratchet & Clank is sitting at an 88 right now. Sony is committed to living up to the reputation of releasing high-quality blockbuster games and has some fantastic momentum going for them which should continue into next year. But would I say that any of these games are system sellers like Breath of the Wild was for Switch, or how God of War and Bloodborne were for the PS4? After playing each of these games this year, I can honestly say no. Demon’s Souls is the closest one to being a system seller, and if you’re a From Software fan, it is worth the effort to pick up a PS5 for it. It is a jaw-dropping game and one of the best remakes I have ever played, but Demon’s Souls is still a remake of a PS3 game at the end of the day, quite a niche game, and it doesn’t bring anything remarkably new to the table. PS5 Backwards Compatibility There is one thing that makes the PS5 worth it in a big way. Backwards compatibility. While the game library is still somewhat small on PS5, if you find yourself with a backlog of games on your PS4, consider getting a PS5. PlayStation 5 crushes every PS4 game you throw at it and runs circles around the PS4 Pro too, should the game support unlocked frame rates. If you have an extensive library of games, do it justice and play them all on PS5 to see them in the best way possible. Is it Worth it to Get a PS5? - The Verdict If you find yourself as the lucky owner of a cutting-edge 4K 120 fps display, I would 100% try to find a PS5 to take full advantage of such a premium display. The PS5 is a powerful piece of hardware that is a blissful experience when firing on all cylinders with the proper display. For anyone still with a 1080p screen, the PS4 and PS4 Pro will still get the job done just fine, and you won’t be missing too many new games any time soon. Next year’s most anticipated games are God of War Ragnarok and Horizon Forbidden West, both of which will have last-gen versions and will likely still play just fine on older hardware. FOMO stinks, but the handful of PS5 games coming out next year will pale in comparison to the swaths of games still coming to PS4 next year and for a couple of years to come. There is still a decent buffer zone of relevancy for the PS4, and PS4 Pro as the PS5 builds its first-party catalog up within the next year or so as well. If you still haven’t picked up a PS5 this year, I wouldn’t fret too much. The PS5 is very powerful, but not everyone has a screen that can take full advantage of it just yet, and the only truly killer feature is the blazing fast SSD. Moreover, game output has been solid for the PS5 launch year, but there hasn’t been a first-party game that will really wow everyone from all corners of the gaming world, at least not yet. So, is the PS5 worth it? Not yet, especially given how difficult it is to track one down. When will the PS5 be worth it? There are a lot of promising games on the horizon for PS5 like Final Fantasy XVI or Forsaken, and if recent rumors of a are true, then by the end of next year, I would say that the PS5 will be a must-buy system for every gamer. Last week, Sony shook the gaming world with an , showing summer still has some kick before Fall. E3 caliber PlayStation Showcase The presentation lasted 40 minutes, and games were announced in rapid succession. They embodied the adage, “float like a butterfly, sting like a bee” in their gameplan: weaving lesser promos between very heavy hitters and out-of-nowhere surprises. Sony levied tons of information over the PlayStation Showcase duration and expanded on several games in post-show interviews. Despite the treasure trove of games we now know are coming in Sony’s near(ish) future, there are still plenty of questions to ask. Here are my top 5 burning questions after Sony's Playstation Showcase. 1. What Will Come Out in 2022? Release dates were increasingly absent during the PlayStation Showcase and release windows were suspiciously vague. We know is supposed to come out in February, but which of Sony’s first-party studios will follow suit? Showing off cinematic trailers sans gameplay is a sign to me that many of the games shown today are a long ways out. Horizon: Forbidden West Not to be cynical, but I really think has a good chance of being pushed into 2023. Which leaves, , , , and as the big things to look for next year. God of War: Ragnarok Tchia Project EVE Forspoken Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands The PlayStation 2021 Showcase was a presentation for the future of the PS5, and I think that future is a bit further away than gamers might be ready for. 2. Will the KOTOR Remake Be Worthy of the Original? The Aspyr team has helped port and remaster other Lucasfilm titles such as , and the series to modern consoles. While they have proven to Lucasfilm that they can be trusted with beloved IP, will their skills translate into a ground-up remake? Star Wars: Republic Commando Jedi Academy After the presentation, Ryan Treadwell of Aspyr confirmed that this remake will in fact be rebuilding the game completely--alluding to a significant level of change from the original. While we saw a stunning cinematic of that is sure to spark the hopes of any Star Wars fan, this tells us nothing about what the actual game will look like. I’m assuming the is at least a few years from being ready. Darth Revan Knights of the Old Republic: Remake Much remains to be seen on how well Aspyr can riff on the classic. 3. What is Wolverine? And What Does This Mean for Insomniac? seems like a shoo-in for the studio that has made some of the best superhero games to date. This anti-hero is beloved by many and serves well for a fast-paced video game. As we saw in the film , there is rich potential for a complex narrative. Wolverine Logan That being said, is vastly different from Insomniac’s past protagonists, and . has gadgets, web moves, and some of the best traversing potential known to video games. has, well, an unabashedly overstocked arsenal of guns to play with. Wolverine Spiderman Ratchet Spiderman Ratchet has claws, a motorcycle, and a bad attitude. Don’t get me wrong, I love those character features, but Insomniac is going to have to get a bit more creative to pull off the same level of “fun” their past games achieved. Wolverine The diversity of character abilities is one of Insomniac’s strong suits. Do they give Wolverine more abilities and gadgets? Do they double down on making his claws feel extra satisfying to slash goons with? This character also poses a darker tone than Spidey, which isn’t typical for the family-friendly Insomniac. Do they lean into this more mature character, or shy away? We’ll have to wait and see. And, as for what’s next for Insomniac… Are they the frickin’ kings of Marvel now or what? How many potential superheroes will Disney entrust them with, now they have proven they can knock almost anything out of the park? Will they have their own Insomniac-Marvel universe full of crossovers now? Anything seems possible at this point. But, I’m losing my shit over the potential for some good X-Men games. 4. What’s Next for Sony Santa Monica? I know I’m getting way ahead of myself. But, what will Sony Santa Monica be working on next? Director Eric Williams confirmed in a post-show interview that will be the finale of Kratos’ crossover into Norse mythology. Does that mean the series reverts to Greece? Does this narrative take a turn into another cultural mythos? And, does the story continue with Kratos as the main protagonist, or will Atreus get his own game? God of War: Ragnarok It’s telling that Williams said this will be the end of the Nordic tale for , not necessarily the finale for the franchise. What is even more intriguing, is what his cohort didn’t say during the interview. God of War Cory Balrog (director of ) was also interviewed. He is currently working on the Ragnarok team--Sony Santa Monica traditionally switches directors every game to get fresh eyes on projects. When asked what he was working on at the end of the interview, he alluded to...something...that is far too early to talk about. He promised more would be shared after the team can shift focus from shipping . God of War 2018 God of War: Ragnarok What the heck is Cory Balrog working on? Is it the next game? Or -- like Insomniac revealed in today’s Playstation Showcase -- is it something completely new? God of War 5. What About the Top Dog? Naughty Dog just completed the and is allegedly working on a multiplayer experience in that universe, similar to the Factions mode included in the original . Surprisingly, we didn’t see even a teaser for this incoming addition. Does this mean multiplayer is farther off? Or, are the rumors off? We will have to wait and see. Last of Us Part II Last of Us Last of Us Part II However, much like we see with Insomniac, studios are often juggling a couple of projects. I would assume Naughty Dog has the capacity to work on another game in conjunction with their multiplayer endeavors. Could we see a DLC story to the like the had , which fleshed out more of Ellie’s story? C’mon Naughty Dog. Tell us more about Lev and Yara. Or the leader of the Wolves, Isaac, voiced by Jeffrey Wright. PlayStation Showcase Sets a High Precedent Ever since , PlayStation has been marching by the beat of its own drum... style, if you will. shocking the gaming industry by opting out of E3 in 2019 Patapon Sony has been using stream-only events to make announcements regarding their new games and hardware. Rather than compete head to head with the big dogs of gaming at an extravagant and expensive trade show, Sony has opted to risk missing out in these zeitgeist moments in order to have a little more undivided attention, while assuredly saving oodles of cash on marketing. Sony has often called their streams PlayStation State of Play, which has brought announcements deserving a middling level of hype from fans. These snippets bring a few big announcements, but typically nothing earth-shattering. Then, there’s the branded PlayStation Showcase. A seemingly small difference, that is in a completely different class. If you remember, the last PlayStation Showcase was a 40-ish minute presentation announcing the PlayStation 5, with an unrelenting cadence of game announcements of huge significance: including and a logo for . There were plenty of intriguing games from some of Sony’s smaller studios, as well as third-party studios to whet the appetite of virtually any gamer. Horizon: Forbidden West God of War: Ragnorok With this high bar set for the brand name of a PlayStation Showcase, it was reasonable to get excited for this presentation. Especially Sony’s suspicious silence surrounding the event of E3 this summer. Playstation Showcase 2021 Highlights Knights of the Old Republic Remake Kicks Off the Show With Cinematic Trailer I practically had to hit pause on PlayStation’s Showcase to sit down on my floor after this announcement. has forever been one of my favorite games. After seeing Aspyr’s epic cinematic trailer featuring a sinisterly silhouetted , I could barely focus on the rest of the show. KOTOR Darth Revan Not everyone will match my level of excitement. Sony is doing a huge service to a loyal fanbase who played this cult classic Star Wars game that was released on Xbox back in 2003 and has made its way onto virtually every console (even phones) since. Remakes and remasters have admittedly oversaturated the game market over the past few years, however, is well-deserving of a modern take. KOTOR After the presentation, Ryan Treadwell of Aspyr confirmed that this remake will in fact be rebuilding the game from the ground up--alluding to a significant level of change from the original while promising to honor its narrative. Aspyr has helped port and remaster other Lucasfilm titles such as , and the to modern consoles. Star Wars: Republic Commando Jedi Academy series project will be much more ambitious than any of these remasters, and Treadwell confirmed the team has been growing in size to compensate. This includes industry veterans from the original team. The Knights of the Old Republic Remake KOTOR No release date was given during PlayStation’s Showcase. With this in mind, I would imagine we have a long time to wait to revisit one of the greatest tales in the Star Wars universe. I’ll be patient. Insomniac Announces Not One, but TWO New Games: Wolverine and Spiderman 2 It was pretty easy to predict that Insomniac would soon announce in some form during this presentation. What caught a lot of people off guard was that Insomniac is also working on . Spiderman 2 a full-fledged Wolverine game These developers are maniacs, and I love them for it. After knocking and out of the proverbial park in PS5’s opening year, Insomniac is apparently laughing at the idea of slowing down. Spider Man: Miles Morales Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart Both of the games shown today received beautiful cinematic trailers that both seem ripe with easter eggs for Marvel fans. Insomniac’s greatest strength is movement and creating power fantasies--proven in their previous work--making it hard to not get excited about the promise of romping around a (hopefully) more gritty world as Wolverine. Little was revealed in the trailer and no release date was given. Wolverine however, was given a vague release window of 2023 and tipped its hand a bit more in terms of story. Both Peter Parker and Miles Morales were seen whalloping baddies, which indicates both as playable characters in the upcoming sequel. Spiderman 2 Finally, deep in the shadows, we hear a sinister voice... revealed to be… Venom. Come on, HOW MUCH MORE HYPE DO YOU WANT?? God of War: Ragnarok Gameplay Revealed Sony during the PlayStation Showcase was another easy prediction. Santa Monica Studios emphatically delivered. updating progress for its tentpole franchise Fans were coaxed back into the complicated relationship of father and son, with the impending doom of Ragnarok approaching. Kratos and Atreus are back and appear to have conflicting interests regarding this Norse doomsday. New characters are introduced, like Thor and Tyr (the Norse God of War) who will likely see significant roles in the narrative. Director Eric Williams alluded to the story being a juxtaposition between the “slice-of-life” mundanity of family drama, and epic moments of Norse mythology in order to weave a heartfelt story. However, seeing the gamut of new monsters Kratos fights in this trailer, we assuredly will have our fair share of classic aggro in this game as well. God of War Williams confirmed that the actual event of Ragnarok will happen in this game and echoed Chris Judge’s (the voice of Kratos) warning that fans will have to, “prepare yourselves” for a wild ride. There was no update on release date here, but is still allegedly slated for 2022. Seeing a small slice of gameplay today made me more hopeful that this is a possibility. God of War: Ragnarok’s Forspoken Gameplay Revealed A new game from Square Enix is always a welcome sign. Officially announced back in March, will be the debut game from Luminous productions. Forspoken The trailer revealed a lengthy look at the game's narrative with bits of gameplay. Our protagonist Frey is thrown into a magical world of Athia from an unfulfilling life in New York. She gains very cool magical powers and does battle with all kinds of magical riff-raff while nimbly traversing an expansive world. looks intriguing to play. Spells pass the eye test for style and seem unique enough at first glance. There appears to be more involved in the combat system than mere button-mashing. Forspoken As a fantasy fan, this game piqued my interest. Although, I haven’t seen enough to get too excited yet. is set to be released Spring 2022. Forspoken Tchia Announced Bringing in some serious Disney-Pixar feelgood was , a game inspired by New Caledonia. Kids play musical instruments, explore a tranquil island full of friendly critters that they can subsequently take control of through magical abilities. Tchia plot is vague, but feels good-natured and wholesome--which is always a fresh find in a video game. Tchia’s And, a game that lets me control AND pet all the animals?? That’s cute as hell. Sign me up. No release date was given for . Tchia Project Eve Announced I love that there has been an onslaught of unapologetically Japanese games coming out. seems to be another quality installment to the substantial list of anime-inspired hack-and-slash action JRPG’s out there. Project Eve While wins a ton of style points, foreshadows a dope soundtrack, and boasts a visually stunning world filled with off-the-wall monsters, it is difficult to distinguish this game from many of the comparable games in the genre. A lot of monsters have-- what amount to-- spiky tires for faces. So, I suppose that’s niche? Project Eve Project Eve’s This game is definitely for someone, just maybe not for me unless I see more of it that sets it apart from the overwhelming pack of action games. No release date was given for . Project Eve Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands Release Date and Gameplay Revealed Wish that was more weird? Wish it had more swords, magic, and fantasy? Borderlands Well, here ya go. is a new take on the franchise from the perspective of titular character Tiny Tina leading a game of Dungeons and Dragons. Players can be more flexible and playful with character classes and have access to spells and swords in addition to firearms. Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands Borderlands Announced at E3 this year, the PlayStation Showcase gave us a look into what this game actually is. blends a fresh fantasy persona with all the expected Borderlands maniacal harmony. Or dissonance. Probably dissonance. Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands Loot aplenty is promised, and players can traverse the new world from a D&D table-top map, likely giving new options for missions and fast travel. is coming March 25, 2021 Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands A Lot of Fluff… As per any showcase, there will eventually be trailers that make you think, “yeah, I know...but what’s next?”. Meaning, companies love reminding us of games that are coming or are being updated so that we are encouraged to throw our money at them, but ultimately are nothing new. Guardians of the Galaxy Gameplay Trailer I’m a very lukewarm Marvel fan. I know I won’t make many friends saying that, but I am way more excited about and in terms of narrative universes. This game looks entertaining as hell, but I know jack about the story and am not too invested. is coming out October 26th. Spiderman X-men Guardians of the Galaxy Guardians of the Galaxy Rainbow 6: Extraction Gameplay Trailer Still slated for January 2022, I didn’t notice anything in this trailer that wasn’t shown at E3 this summer. I have no idea why this was included. Ghostwire Tokyo The new trailer that looks more polished than previously seen. I still have no idea what’s really going on with this story, or what you’ll be doing besides smashing ghosts with cool spells… but I’m excited about this unnerving version of Tokyo. However, showing similar gameplay with no update on release was a head-scratching move by PlayStation, and took a little air out of my anticipation. Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End and Lost Legacy Remasters This announcement makes sense for Sony, but seemed more fitting for a smaller announcement rather than taking space in this PlayStation Showcase. Although, I’m glad that both of these games will be even more accessible to people who want to experience them on PS5. Alan Wake: Remastered Gameplay Trailer Recently, was announced for October 5, but today we got to see what the game actually looks like. Originally released in 2010 as an Xbox exclusive, PlayStation owners will finally have access to the classic, and after tie-ins to , will be especially worth revisiting. Alan Wake Remaster Control Alan Wake Remaster Vampire: The Masquerade- Bloodhunt Has too long of a title. However, this is one of the few Battle Royal games that has any appeal to me, solely based on the fact that Nosferatu is a character class. Gran Turismo 7 Gameplay Trailer and Release Date Revealed It wouldn’t be a new console generation without a crisp new car sim. If there aren’t rockets on the cars, or I can’t throw bananas and shells over my shoulder...not interested. is coming out March 4, 2022. Gran Turismo 7 Announced for November of this year. Looks like an interactive musical experience. Radiohead: Kid A Mnesia Experience Revealed Uhm, thanks Thom Yorke? What is this? Why is this? I’m excited... I think? Deathloop Trailer It wouldn’t be a presentation without it. This game has permeated trade shows for the last year. Even though this will be in consumer's hands next week, I suppose Sony thought it wouldn’t hurt to show it off--just one more time. GTA V Ps5 is Delayed to March 2022… What f*cking year is it? PlayStation Showcase 2021 Grades: PlayStation lived up to its Showcase brand today….mostly It wasn’t quite as epic as last year's showcase, but still, Sony delivered an efficient show: tons of games and minimal talking. Even though there was plenty of fluff in the show, the PlayStation Showcase graciously kept it short on each of their repeat announcements. I didn’t feel the slow moments stayed slow for long. The finale in particular was best-in-class for a presentation like this. Sony ended the show with a comical onslaught of huge games. There was a good mix of actual gameplay with semi-reasonable release windows, and cinematic trailers that open a 3-4 year window, promising a lush future for the PlayStation 5. That future may be further than many of us would like, and 2022 may be another slow one, but good things are on the horizon. And my, it feels good to be a PlayStation fan. Blake’s Grade:8.5/10

PlayStation Showcase 2021 Review: Here's What You Missed

Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) and Senior Vice President Hideaki Nishino this week the first PlayStation 5 System Software Beta Program. This new program from SIE is designed to help them test new console features before the next system update to the console due out later this year. announced As part of this program, players who sign up will be able to test out the new features slated for that upcoming system update. According to Nishino, the new update will be "packed with new features." Players who are interested in signing up can do so at the . program sign-up webpage Gamers who would like to take part in the beta program have to be over the age of 18 and reside in the United States, Canada, Japan, the United Kingdom, Germany, or France. SIE is promising that the users will be the first to test out the new features for the upcoming major system update. The feedback from the software beta is going to apparently help guide the future development of the features and the system update. Sony Launching PlayStation 5 System Software Beta Trial Players selected to be part of the program will be notified with instructions via email on how to download the new beta version of the upcoming system update. A physical PS5 console with an internet connection and PlayStation Network account are required to take part in the program. Additionally, gamers who participate will be automatically added to the potential participant pool for upcoming system updates to the PlayStation 5. So, they will not have to register again in order to participate. After the beta program begins, players will be allowed to restore their system software to the latest official release before the end of the program. The last major system update for the PS5 console was released last April. It included such features as extended USB storage, cross-generation Share Play, and other various social features. More details on the next major system update will be revealed later on. One trick to taking part in the program would likely be actually obtaining a physical PlayStation 5. What is the Sony PlayStation 5 System Software Beta Program?

After an embarrassing, disastrous launch on consoles, Cyberpunk 2077 is officially returning to the PlayStation Store. CD Projekt RED confirmed the news on the company's in a posting on July 15. official website According to the report from CDPR, Cyberpunk 2077 will be available and reinstated on the digital PlayStation Storefront starting next week. It reads as follows: "In relation to Current Report no. 66/2020 of 18 December 2020, the Management Board of CD PROJEKT S.A. with a registered office in Warsaw hereby publicly discloses the decision by Sony Interactive Entertainment to reinstate the availability of the digital edition of Cyberpunk 2077 on PlayStation Store, effective on 21 June 2021." Sony Interactive Entertainment later issued a statement to Eurogamer, confirming the development. The statement noted that PlayStation 4 gamers would likely continue seeing performance issues on the console and recommended playing it on the PS4 Pro or PlayStation 5 for the best gameplay experience. It reads: "SIE can confirm that Cyberpunk 2077 will be re-listed on PlayStation Store starting June 21, 2021. Users will continue to experience performance issues with the PS4 edition while CD Projekt Red continues to improve stability across all platforms. SIE recommends playing the title on PS4 Pro or PS5 for the best experience.​" It's been just about six months since Sony yanked the CDPR title from the PlayStation Store and who purchased the game through the PlayStation Store. even offered refunds to all players Following its multi-platform launch, Cyberpunk 2077 suffered from a number of bugs, glitches and instances of game crashes on its console versions. Cyberpunk 2077 Returning to the PlayStation Store The poor launch for Cyberpunk 2077 was an embarrassment to the studio and ruined CDPR's standing with gamers and the community. During a December 2020 conference call, CDPR VP of Business Development Michal Nowakowski admitted that the company "definitely did not spend enough time" working on the game's performance for current-gen platforms. The SIE statement that the game is still suffering from issues on with the PS4 edition doesn't exactly inspire confidence. Regardless, it will take a lot for CDPR to regain the trust that was shattered with Cyberpunk 2077. Executives will no be able to rely on the old excuses that were used here either. Cyberpunk 2077 is currently available for Windows PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Google Stadia. Not to mention, there are teeming amounts of monsters, bandits, phantasmagoria and all manner of threats throughout The Continent. The gameplay also allows players to play as Ciri through various points. The Witcher 3 was a highly-praised, award-winning game for its immersive open world, dark fantasy style and amazing narrative, where choices and consequences matter. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Arrives on PlayStation Now Players who have never experienced The Witcher 3 and are trying it for the first time on PlayStation now are in for a treat. The Game of the Year Edition includes all the content and updates released over the life of the game. All the post-launch content, DLC, the Hearts of Stone Expansion and the Blood and Wine expansion are all included. The Witcher 3 is undeniably challenging, but its gameplay and story catapulted it into becoming one of the most beloved games of the last decade. The Game of the Year Edition also offers a ton of value because it gives players the entire playground to experience from the start rather than having to download extra updates and DLC. Unfortunately, CDPR has squandered a lot of the goodwill the company once had. However, that goodwill was largely due to the immense quality of The Wild Hunt. Subscribers who have never played the game would be well-served in giving this game a look. For PlayStation Now, gamers will be able to stream and download the game through the Now app on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 consoles. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt GOTY Edition Hits PlayStation Now Service

The PlayStation 5 DualSense Controller is finally getting some new colors thrown into the mix. this week has revealed its latest versions of the DualSense wireless controller for the PlayStation 5. The two new controllers will be available in the colors Midnight Black and Cosmic Red. The new galaxy-inspired colors for the controllers will be hitting shelves in June. Sony PlayStation According to PlayStation, the new controller lineup will be available at all participating retailers worldwide. Release dates for the new PS5 controllers will vary by location. Much like the previous DualSense controller release, these new controllers have the two-toned color shades, haptic feedback, and adaptive triggers. New games such as Returnal support these innovative, new DualSense controller features. New DualSense Controller Colors Revealed for PlayStation 5 Speaking to PlayStation Blog on the color choices, design team member Leo Cardoso commented, “Our goal is to always find designs that will surprise and entice our fans, and these new colors are the result of an extensive selection process." He added, "We wanted the new controller colors to complement each other, as well as the original DualSense wireless controller and PS5 console, so we designed the colors around the theme of ‘galaxy’ as it felt like a natural progression from the original PS5 and accessories designs.” Meanwhile, design team member Satoshi Aoyagi stated, "Both Midnight Black and Cosmic Red feature a subtle blue hue, that produces unique shades of red and black." He continued, "A blue hue is also present in the original DualSense wireless controller colors, so all three colors complement each other nicely.
