*Note: a SWOT analysis is an evaluation of the fundamental, operational, technical, social, economic, and even to some degree administrative elements of a project. This is not a model to be used for trading purposes. (NFA, DYOR) Composed of four elements, and , a SWOT analysis framework provides excellent insight for establishing a high-level understanding of the state of a project’s well-being through the lens of a birds-eye view. Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats It can help formulate decisions around which areas require more attention, set performance goals, and organize a foundational understanding of where a project is headed. Rarely (if ever) used in crypto, it is time to apply this timeless method of evaluation to the digital asset space. Today, the most controversial OG crypto project, full of legal shenanigans, enterprise-grade technology, and die-hard community members, will get a SWOT. Ripple ( ) XRP , 💪 Strengths (Internal) (Helpful) 1. XRPL (Ledger) is Non-Turing Complete The Ledger used by Ripple is actually structurally reminiscent of Bitcoin and diametrically different from Ethereum. The XRPL is not able to support arbitrary computations or smart contracts; this was a design choice deliberately made by Ripple Labs in order to guarantee a higher level of stability and security for the network. By laser-purposing XRPL for a specific type of transaction (payments), the inherent negative externalities and uncertainties around smart contracts are avoided. 2. Deterministic Fees Something very unusual in the crypto landscape is stability; be it price, fees, user count, or any other metric, crypto is notorious for its volatility. Ripple’s ledger is the first of its kind to offer a model for fees that are set at 10 “drops” which translates to (1/100,000) of an XRP. With a predictable fee structure, a much more effective payment system can be built and a higher degree of transaction confidence would be experienced by users. This is in stark contrast to the tranny of Etheruem’s gas fees which are ridiculously hard to calculate and have historically spiked upwards into the hundreds of dollars. 3. Transaction Burn Mechanism Every single transaction on XRPL demands that a tiny portion of the token supply is burned. While the exact amount can vary, the base requirement is 10 drops or 0.00001 XRP, which has so far averaged out to somewhere between 5,000–10,000 XRP being burned per day (with massive outlier spikes, of course). The presence of the Burn mechanism exudes constant delayed pressure on upkeeping the token’s value as well as deterring network spam. Thus far, >11,000,000 XRP has been burned since inception; which is insignificant when considering how long it has been and how much more tokens still need to make it into circulation. 4. Supply Distribution Mechanism Another novel design around the token’s economics from Ripple labs. Set at a 100 Billion XRP max supply and with ~54% already in circulation, there are another >~46 Billion tokens that need to make their way to market; how this happens is arguably balanced. The non-circulating supply is locked in an escrow account that cannot be forced open; every month, 1 Billion tokens are unlocked/vested to the Ripple foundation, and the foundation has to distribute those tokens within the month. If they do not, the excess tokens are returned back to the escrow wallet, and the cycle repeats itself. This will happen indefinitely until all tokens are in circulation. 5. XLS-20 In October of 2022, Ripple released the XLS-20 standard framework, which brought NFTs to the XRPL ecosystem. Given that the overall potential market size of NFTs eclipses that of fungible assets, new vectors of value creation/retention and innovation are now possible on XRP. Since launch, a multitude of new communities has arrived on-chain, bringing with them an activity that has (proportionately) outperformed all other network metrics in 2023. 6. Built-in CLOB Any financial/monetary system requires the presence of a venue to conduct trade; within the world of crypto, these venues are DEXs. XRPL has a CLOB (Central Limit Order Book) decentralized exchange built in that facilities trade of cryptos, tokens, and NFTs. The CLOB model is much more appealing to large traditional financial institutions (than the crypto industry’s more common AMM) because it is what they have been using historically. The CLOB is also a single point that aggregates all liquidity, providing a higher degree of depth and lower slippage with high control over the order types and their granularity. 7. Technological Developments Ripple is constantly developing reliable, enterprise-grade technologies that keep up with the standards floating around the crypto industry, as well as those that are demanded/required by large traditional organizations and governments to operate. Currently, there is a pipeline of innovation as follows: an AMM being developed as per the XLS-30, Hooks system that will allow for semi-smart contract programmability (similar to the conditional scripts currently being used in the Bitcoin ecosystem), a Multi-chain ecosystem that leverages a variety of scaling solutions including the use of the EVM and sidechains, new identity solutions, XLS standards for off-chain transactions and improvements in the programming language used, among other things. 😞 Weaknesses (Internal) (Harmful) 1. Destination Tag System While this is a novel design that does have its merits within legacy financial circles, and it is not present in other crypto projects, it’s not one that is highly regarded by crypto natives. XRP utilizes a tracking/ownership account system where a single address has tags that allow it to manage funds on behalf of other people. Imagine a centralized exchange that has one address on XRPL and that one address receives/manages all the XRP balances of other users. Where on Bitcoin or Ethereum, every user has their own address, on Ripple’s Ledger, one address can become a bank that manages the XRP funds of other people, creating micro-hierarchies/federations within the network itself. This is potentially a positive for users that do not want to deal with the headaches associated with self-sovereignty but a red flag for the freedom maximalists. 2. PoA (Proof-of-Association) Using their own consensus model that does not have transactional or block reward incentives arouses suspicion, what does somebody have to gain by joining? Part of the argument here is that the burning mechanism will ultimately drive the value accrual for the nodes. This might prove to be a valid model that appeals to a grade of market participants who have a radically more developed psychological understanding than I might; however, from the lens of a crypto native, this does not seem appealing to newer/less capitalized actors and would translate to another model where the elites are able to secure ownership while users must just blindly trust their associations. 🧐 Opportunities (External) (Helpful) 1. SEC Court Case Everybody in the industry has heard about the recent outcome of the ruling by U.S. District Judge Analisa Torres. Obviously, this is far from winning any war, but this has become the first signal of intellectual clarity from a regulatory entity. Granted, her ruling is very minute and only addresses the transactions pertaining to XRP taking place between retail investors on exchange venues, still leaving a legal gap around the sales of XRP from Ripple to private investors through the use of contracts as security transactions. Nevertheless, when looking over the long term, if Ripple does manage to pull this one off, survive the legal bashing, and continue its existence, this will be an anchoring precedent for not just XRP but for the entire crypto industry. By bolstering the industry from the legal side, XRP will become a household name and forever be honored as a maverick. 2. Support from Many Other Projects When launched, Ripple was like an ugly duckling that constantly caught heat from crypto maxis and projects about its centralization. After a decade (yes, Ripple has been around for more than 10 years now), that clamor has been more-or-less shut down, and everybody has rallied behind Ripple in support of them overcoming the legal issues they are so bravely fighting. 3. Working with ~20 Countries on CBDCs While CBDCs are the antithesis of crypto, their arrival into the world economy is neigh but inevitable. Here we see the power of Ripple’s brand and legendary team putting in the footwork and developing relationships with a multitude of nations to leverage XRPL for the issuance of their CBDCs. Some of the known countries include Palau, Colombia, and Montenegro. 😳 Threats (External) (Harmful) 1. SEC Court Case This element is both an opportunity if won and also a constant looming threat if things go really undesirably. In the event that XRP completely loses its court case (even though this is unlikely given the legal system’s ability to appeal basically indefinitely) that would cause crippling damage to both XRP and the industry as a whole. While this does only pertain to the jurisdictions of the US (a project as intelligent and well-resourced as Ripple, would likely find a way to continue existing outside of US oversight); having the US market is an enormous/outsized portion of the world’s money. Takeaway: Ripple is an absolute Powerhouse. They are a beacon of quality and the center of attention for all those watching the regulatory developments around crypto within the US. The project is obviously ultra-high quality and the people working behind it are world class. The technology of the project and the finesse with which it is developed (in regard to the overall finance and technology sectors) is something that many new-age projects should be learning from. Had there been no legal issues facing Ripple, it would be feasible to consider that it would have been much further along; at the same time, seeing its relentless development (business and technology) while juggling the obnoxious legal system gives them the right to own a permanent place in the digital industry (which they already have secured). Conclusion: I was actually one of the anti-ripple people back when I first got involved in crypto. Much of it was my own immaturity, lack of understanding, and desire to virtue signal my moral alignment with decentralization. Since then, and especially in light of the XRP vs SEC combat that began in 2020, my stance has changed. First and foremost, the very meaning of decentralization and its application to crypto/finance has now become much more concrete; projects don't have to be decentralized; the industry does; by virtue of allowing anybody to propose anything, decentralization is present; shutting out another participant because their system is “centralized” is unwise; freedom of choice is what we seek. Ripple will be a name that becomes synonymous with legacy giga-corporations such as Blackrock, Microsoft, and the such (I'm not saying they are the same type of companies; I'm just saying they will be equally important in their own right). Would I invest in XRP? Sheesh. Let me put it this way; Right now, today, No. I believe there is one more strong selloff ahead for the overall industry, and the recent price action is just overhyped money sloshing around (not new money coming in). However, at the right price point (maybe ~$0.50, yes, absolutely, I’d grab another bag). Something in the 1%–3% range of a crypto portfolio allocation is not out of the picture. The result was a very short — but complete — project showing how we can bring together these three techniques to solve a data science problem. While this whole project could have been done manually inserting values into Excel, I like to take the long view and think about how the skills learned here will help in the future. In his fundamental book, , English economist explains that currencies address a central economic problem: the coincidence of wants. Jevons uses the phrase to describe the conundrum inherent to barter where the parties of the transaction have to agree to sell and buy each other's goods.  The obvious challenge is the improbability of the wants, needs and events that would enable such a transaction occurring at the same time and the same place. In absence of this double coincidence of wants (COW), the parties need to agree on an acceptable substitute: a medium of exchange. While Jevons included the latter function in his definition of money, his thinking was necessary informed by and limited to the technologies of his time. Money and the Mechanism of Exchange William Stanley Jevons We will ignore the confusion here that barter was at any time a relevant mechanism for sizable - or even smaller - economies. The following is a review limited to the definition of money, the state of currencies and their potential trajectory with consideration of current technologies, including blockchain-based solutions and so-called "cryptocurrencies". Currency ./. Money While frequently used synonymous, money and currency have somewhat different meanings: currencies are . Money - is one (optional) technology used within that system, and most often still defined as medium of exchange, unit of account, standard and store of value, referencing a definition established by Jevons in 1876. systems of value exchange Considering that Alexander Graham Bell received a patent for the telephone around the same year and that Jevon's could not have known about digital forms of exchange, it seems past-due to re-evaluate the usefulness of this definition of money with respect to solving the COW problem. Medium of Exchange Throughout history, media of exchange have taken on many different forms and still do so to date. Depending on the time and place, gold coins, stones and shells have been used as money. Commodities such as gold and silver coins were followed by commodity-backed mediums - usually paper certificates - exchangeable for specific amounts of a valued commodity such as a metal. What these technologies have in common is that the simple transfer of the instrument from buyer to seller combines the payment and settlement of a transaction: they are bearer instruments. Today, the medium of exchange is most often expressed through the manipulation of digital entries of account ledgers (i.e. bytes) expressed in fiat. The latter quality refers to the suspension of commodity backing of money by governments unwilling or unable to settle outstanding commodity obligations. Instead, legislators invoked legal tender laws, which establish certain instruments as acting as money. As the accounts of buyers and sellers are most often maintained by different financial institutions, these necessarily must cooperate to update the digital ledgers of the parties to reflect the exchange of money. Current commercial bank accounts can therefore be best understood as (federated) distributed ledgers - making DLTs in essence the opposite of blockchains. Depending on the banks and technologies involved, the process of adjusting these distributed ledgers can take between 24 hours, days or even weeks for a cross-border transaction. Until recently, consumers requiring bearer instruments for peer-to-peer transactions with immediate settlement were mostly limited to IOUs printed as bank notes, commonly referred to as ‘cash’. The First Electronic Cash? In October 2008, published under the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto introduced the concept of a peer-to-peer electronic cash system referred to as ‘Bitcoin’. The currency - as in system of money - is labelled Bitcoin; while the mining reward is named 'bitcoin' with a lower-case 'b'. As the paper explains, entries in Bitcoin’s ledger are protected from manipulation by a cryptographic scheme, which hashes transactions in time-stamped intervals into blocks. a paper This function inspired the term "blockchain" to describe a decentralized, public ledger and "cryptocurrency" - "crypto," for short - for the denomination of entries on that ledger - a rather unfortunate terminology that has led to much confusion among software developers and regulators alike. Similar to the architecture of the Internet, blockchains do not rely on a single entity or consortium; entries on blockchains can be validated or created by anybody operating the software. A combination of encryption and game mechanics ensure that transactions performed on a blockchain are next to impossible to alter. The latter quality - also present in other blockchain-native assets, such as Ethereum’s ether - made bitcoin the first ever digital bearer instrument - however, not necessarily the desired peer-to-peer since transfers take time and require the payment of network fees which can vary widely (details ). cash here Digital Bearer Instruments Blockchain-based assets - including bitcoin - can be imbued with additional functions through more complex smart contracts, creating a form of "programmable money." Like their real-world counterparts, these digital bearer instruments do not require users to involve trusted third parties in the transaction. As documented by many block explorers, the Bitcoin blockchain, through its independent network of miners, confirms transaction between parties inside of approximately ten minutes. And, unlike bank transactions, which can take days and sometimes weeks to , new entries on a blockchain are final, and the recipient is free to use the funds at that time immediately. settle NOTE : While transactions on networks operated by commercial banks (i.e. Zelle) seemingly settle instantly from a user's perspective the settlement of funds between the sender's and recipient's banks is in fact managed via Automated Clearinghouse (ACH). This means that the recipient banks takes on a settlement risk as it  waits for the next ACH batch. Store of Value A short glance at the published by the International Monetary Fund quickly dissuades any notion that government-issued fiat make for a stable store of value. And, while most nations so far have escaped the levels of hyper-inflation afflicting countries such as Venezuela (10,000,000%), Zimbabwe (73%) and Sudan (50%), historically fiat currencies have on average lasted no more than 25-27 years. world’s inflation rate statistics Bearer instruments introduced by federal mints such as pennies, dimes and quarters, initially bought daily products and services. The . Daily Times was sold for one penny in 1900 Today, these instruments have mostly lost their utility as medium of exchange: pennies, nickels and even quarters hardly buy any relevant goods and services. Even though most US coinage today has become impractical for purchases, and several coins are even being produced at cost greater than face value (more ), coins are being created at great cost to taxpayers who would be better off collecting these for their metal value. here "Cryptocurrencies" As outlined in a , the term “cryptocurrency” at best describes a very small subset of blockchain-derived assets accurately. And even coins and tokens created for the specific purpose of payments have found very little consumer adoption. previous article A number of projects have singled out volatility as the main problem. This led to the creation of a new category of cryptocurrencies, referred to as "stable coins". The most noteworthy entrants in this growing category thus far with market capitalization according to of $3.4 billion and $343 million as of June 16, 2019, are and . These tokens are pegged to the U.S. Dollar, with the objective to maintain a one-to-one correlation, as such it might be more accurate to call these tokens 'USD Pegs'). CoinMarketCap Tether USD Coin While it might be too early to judge if stable coins will increase consumer adoption, it seems doubtful that these instruments can challenge fiat incumbents on their home turf (payment function) as long as users are required to convert fiat money to the new unit of account, while paying a fee for the privilege. Unit of Account Cryptocurrency exchanges and wallets throughout various countries, show subtle, albeit significant differences, when displaying blockchain-based assets. Even though most applications default to English as , users may see a conversion of their digital holdings to their local legal tender. lingua franca As such, ‘money’ might also be thought of as an individual’s ‘language of trade or value’. If presented with a number prefixed with a symbol that is not part of a person’s daily vernacular, he is forced to translate the value into the familiar denomination. While tokens pegged to fiat might not require such a translation, there are few counter-parties to-date willing to accept these ‘pegs’. Historically, citizens have turned to alternatives of fiat when the buying power of their government-created unit of account weakened drastically due to inflation. While commodities such as gold continue to be a popular choice for wealth preservation, these provide little utility for day-to-day expenditures. Instead, consumers have often turned to bearer instruments issued by other nation states. In some instances, a country may even move to the drastic measure of abandoning its sovereign currency in favor of another country’s money -- as is the case with Ecuador, East Timor, El Salvador, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Palau, Turks and Caicos, British Virgin Islands and Zimbabwe; all the aforementioned countries, list the U.S. dollar as official currency today (more ). In total 66 countries have pegged their currencies to the U.S. dollar while five U.S. territories and seven sovereign countries use it as their official currency of exchange. The table below provides an overview of the U.S. territories and independent sovereign nations that use the U.S. dollar as their official . here medium of exchange While the global digitization of currencies has seemingly created a level playing field for the world’s fiat money, consumers are reluctant to adopt a new language of trade. When a local currency shows strong signs of failure, citizens are most often turning to a seemingly ubiquitous form of cash such as U.S. Federal Reserve Notes. Conclusions Historical definitions of money and currencies do not account for the current state of technology in general and blockchain-based solutions in particular. Money - as unit of account - can and should be understood as language, without regard to a particular store of value function.  As such  there is sufficient evidence by now that "cryptocurrencies" will continue to fail in supplementing fiat currencies in a meaningful way as "money" - similar to the failed approach of introducing the artificial world language . Esperanto While stable coins - in form of fiat-pegs - might play a small intermediary role on the way to a solution, a successful blockchain- or graph-based architecture (the latter seems more likely) must implement currency as protocol through consumer-facing applications that provide a seamless bridge to legacy technologies created for the use of fiat. Just as the voice-over internet protocol (VoIP) empowered Skype to challenge phone carriers worldwide, this final step can redefine money by using the legacy unit of account only as symbol for bearer instruments representing non-inflationary assets.* Further reading: *While fiat itself is inflationary "by nature"  - after all, there will never be less - it is important to understand that assets might at times be even more inflated. Having spent over 15 years in the CMS world, I can say this industry never gets boring. In fact, it’s been evolving even faster in the recent years. With all the emerging devices, frameworks, APIs and cloud options, there’s always something new to learn. The question every developer asks: How do I choose the right technology for my next CMS project, and what skills should I learn? Source: https://pixabay.com/en/children-fishing-teamwork-together-1807511/ #1: Traditional or headless CMS? Headless CMS has been a controversial topic for developers in the past two years. That’s no surprise given the disruptive potential it has for the whole CMS industry. However, is it the right choice for everyone? Regardless of the controversy, it seems that developers find the concept very attractive. According to the survey conducted by Kentico among almost 1,000 CMS practitioners earlier this year, . State of the Headless CMS 2018 29% of respondents who know headless CMS have already used one and additional 38% plan to use it in the next 12 months When do you plan to use a headless CMS? (n = 526; only those who knew what headless CMS was were asked this question) Those who already used a headless CMS are highly positive: 63% love the idea of headless CMS, and 30% say “I like it, but it has its limitations.” With this sentiment, it’s very likely we will see strong adoption of headless CMS in the nearest years, and developers should start paying attention to this new phenomenon. #2: Which languages and frameworks? Becoming fluent in some language or framework requires a significant time investment. In the world of traditional CMS, the choice of CMS is often connected with the programming language you prefer. That’s something that becomes irrelevant in the world of headless CMS, as you can use any language to call its API. These are the most popular languages and frameworks used by CMS developers according to the : State of the Headless CMS survey Technologies used by developers (n=526) JavaScript is — unsurprisingly — a clear winner. On the back-end side, PHP is the clear winner — again, no surprise, given the size of the WordPress and Drupal community. However, when we look at developers who already use headless CMS, node.js wins over PHP: Technologies used by those who already use headless CMS (n=137) What it means for you: PHP may lose its traction as people adopt headless CMS. Thus, sharpening your node.js skills may be a more future-proof investment. #3: Self-hosted open source, managed hosting, or SaaS? Other choices developers must make are “Which CMS hosting model should I choose?” and “Should I go with an open source or commercial solution?” Traditional CMS combines its own code and the front-end presentation written by the developer in a single monolith. Its architecture requires that you have a high level of control over the CMS code and its hosting environment. That’s why developers have historically preferred to host the CMS themselves. However, headless CMS comes with a very different architecture: it strictly separates the CMS back-end and presentation layer. This separation allows vendors to provide headless CMS in a true multitenant SaaS model and lets you focus on developing your website or application using its REST or GraphQL API. Interestingly, even for headless CMS so that they can retain total control over the CMS and avoid vendor lock-in. most developers (63%) still prefer a self-hosted open source model While there are some good reasons for choosing such a model in the traditional CMS world, I believe that the benefits of the SaaS model will prevail as companies explore more agility and lower maintenance costs. Which of the headless CMS models do you prefer? (n=430) #4: Monolith or microservices? With a traditional CMS, you use the CMS as a platform and build your website on top of that. At first glance, this makes perfect sense because you get a lot of out-of-the-box functionality, which means that even a less-experienced developer can quickly build a sophisticated website. The problem is that your code is tightly coupled with your CMS, which means that you can’t use a different programming language and that the CMS might not work well with the latest front-end frameworks. And, when you decide to move to another CMS, you typically have to rewrite your code from scratch. That’s why developers increasingly prefer a microservices architecture where CMS is just one of the services they use. They combine their own microservices and third-party APIs, such as SendGrid for emails, Auth0 for authentication or Stripe for payments. It gives them more flexibility and independence on other solutions and vendors. On the other hand, this approach may require more coding and stronger development skills. It’s no wonder the headless CMS becomes so popular among developers who use microservices. According to the report, , and those who do are twice as likely to be already using headless CMS (39%) than those who don’t (19%). 30% of developers already use microservices Do you use microservices to build your applications? (n=711) The move toward the microservices architecture also has a significant impact on how you think about your career development: In the past, you needed to learn the specifics of a CMS and how to develop with it. In the API-first world, such knowledge becomes mostly irrelevant as you only need to learn relatively simple APIs. My advice: Instead of learning a specific CMS, invest your time into understanding the microservices architecture and improving your development skills. It’s all about mindset The CMS market is in the middle of a major technology transition. It moves from web-first, on-premise, monolithic CMS towards content-first, cloud-first, microservices-oriented model. Making the right choices in this transition is not easy. At the end of the day, the deciding factor isn’t the technology itself, but the innovation appetite of you and your clients: If you want to play it safe and failure is not an option, you will most likely choose a traditional model. If your goal is to gain a competitive edge by developing some innovative projects, you will choose the headless model. There’s no single answer for every project — you need to choose the combination that works for you and your clients. From the career perspective, however, there’s no point to wait — make sure you’re on top of the latest trends.
