The new Haven App designed by Edward Snowden is a remarkable app that allows you to turn your smart phone into a spy/Home Device. However it’s features can be used against you if the device is ever Hacked or Confiscated. While this is a great app it doesn't do much in the way of protecting your privacy. In fact if not used correctly any Hacked phone with the Haven app installed could end up spying on you. So, before you install Haven on your device make sure that you take a few precautions first. In this article I will show you what precautions to take and how to set up a Safe Haven using Haven Phones. Security What You Will Need A Faraday Box x number of Haven Phones An Alert Phone Wall Mounted Cell Phone Holders Securing your Alert Phone Your Alert Phone is the one that you will carry with you and will receive messages on from your Haven Phones telling you that someone is in your Safe Haven. This is the most important phone to have secure because it is the only link to your Safe Haven. This phone needs to be a Burner/Prepaid Phone from Walmart (or where ever else you might find one) that can’t be traced back to you. you also want to go as low scale as possible with it. This means no fancy features (GPS, Camera, Mic, Grav sensor, etc..), basically go back to the stone ages and get a cheap flip phone and have a tech take out the Camera and Mic. You will never need any of these with your Alert Phone because all it will be used for is to receive messages from your Haven Phones. Now if you think this might be to much, think again. We are using all of these features to turn our Phone into a Spy Phone and if a Government has you in there sights your super secure burner phone could give you away. Now that you have your Alert Phone ready to go Download the Signal app and register your Phone with Signal Securing your Haven Phones This is where we want to focus most of our energy since these are going to have an app that allows for spying on them. You want to make sure that you buy Burner Phones for this part. A Burner Phone is a prepaid phone that you can get from a place like Walmart that isn't traceable back to you. Since we can use our Haven App over WiFi they don’t need to be prepaid phones. Just buy a few cheap phones off craigslist or from a Pawnshop and never activate them.This is important if Anonymity is your goal, because if these phones are ever stolen or confiscated they could be linked back to you. How many should you get well it depends on how big your safe Haven is and how much of it you want to be able to see. We are going to be using the Haven App to turn our Haven Phones into Motion Sensors. That way the Phones can watch over your Safe Haven and not give away any valuable information. So, you will want your Haven Phones to either be able to see your whole Safe Haven or at least all entrances and exits from your Safe Haven. Now that we have our Haven Phones we can start making them secure. Now their are three settings in our Haven Phones that need to be changed before anything else is done. The first is the Pin entry Setting. We want to make sure that this is setup with a good long pin number (over 6 digits) so that if the phones are taken no one can access them. Secondly we want to encrypt our Haven Phones this way no one can access any of the data off of them who doesn’t have permission. Thirdly we want to setup secure boot on our Haven Phones and set the Pin number to a different one then the Pin to Access the phone. What this will do is ask for a Pin before your phone boots that way you and only you can access and change any of the data on your Haven phones. Now that the Haven Phones are secure we can download and install Haven on each of them. When setting up Haven make sure to register your phones to use Signal to send the alerts. This will encrypt all of the alert messages going back and forth between your Haven Phones and your Alert Phone. Creating your Safe Haven Now that we have everything secured we can begin setting up our Safe Haven. You are going to want to install Wall Mounted Cell Phone Holders wherever you want to place your Haven Phones inside of you Safe Haven. This way you can get a clear view of your entire Safe Haven. You will also want to stash your Faraday Box somewhere Dark and Quite. A Faraday Box is designed to keep out any electromagnetic signals this is useful in many ways, but we will only be using it to make sure that your Haven Phones can’t be accessed when in storage. You will want to store the Faraday box in another room or closet without any light to be sure that your phone isn't receiving any data from it’s surroundings while in storage. Additional security steps Now your Safe Haven has been setup and is ready to go, but there are a few more security steps that should be taken when using your Safe Haven. First whenever you return to your Safe Haven be sure and take down all of your Haven Phones, delete any alerts that have been created, and turn off and remove the batteries from your Haven Phones (If applicable). This all needs to be done inside of your Safe Haven before you transport them to your Faraday Box. This way any pictures that were taken of you by the phones will be deleted and if they have been Hacked they won’t be able to give away anymore information. The batteries are removed to make sure that the phone isn’t reciving any power at all. That way no malicious persons can turn on any of your Phones features while they are powered off to spy on you. You should also never use either your Haven Phones or your Alert Phones for anything other then their intended purpose. This will reduce the risk of you getting any Viruses that could be used to track you. This means no Facebook, Twitter, Web Surfing and downloading. A Hacker can’t just upload a virus on your device you have to give them an entry point to do so and if you don’t ever use these phones for anything other than your Haven App that shouldn't happen. While you are in your Safe Haven be sure that you don’t have your Haven Phones up and that you keep them in the Faraday Box. Remember the purpose of these phones is to spy on your Safe Haven and you don’t want anyone else to use that feature against you. The only time your Haven Phones should be out is when you are using them to protect your Safe Haven. Lastly when choosing a room for your Safe Haven you want one with as little entry points as possible. The ideal Safe Haven only has One door to go in and out of and NO Windows. However if there are more then one Entry Point make sure that you place your Haven Phones in a way that they will see anyone coming through them. You also want to possition them as best you can or use blinds, so that they can’t see anything outside of your Safe Haven. This information could potentially be used to help locate where your Safe Haven is. Now you should have a working and anonymous Safe Haven. It might seem like a lot, but if your life depends on your identity staying Anonymous these are the steps that should be taken. An app or Service is only as good as the person utilizing it. Privacy and Security Services are working everyday to try and protect your Anonymity, but if you leave a trail when using them there is nothing that can be done. Always use secure and anonymous forms of payment when purchasing these items and never have them shipped directly to you or your Safe Haven. To many anons have been lost because they didn't use a secure form of payment when utilizing there anonymous services. A VISIT TO DOGLAND “There's a house, away there to the left,” said Sylvie, after we had walked what seemed to me about fifty miles. “Let's go and ask for a night's lodging.” “It looks a very comfable house,” Bruno said, as we turned into the road leading up to it. “I doos hope the Dogs will be kind to us, I is so tired and hungry!” A Mastiff, dressed in a scarlet collar, and carrying a musket, was pacing up and down, like a sentinel, in front of the entrance. He started, on catching sight of the children, and came forwards to meet them, keeping his musket pointed straight at Bruno, who stood quite still, though he turned pale and kept tight hold of Sylvie's hand, while the Sentinel walked solemnly round and round them, and looked at them from all points of view. {Image...The mastiff-sentinel} “Oobooh, hooh boohooyah!” He growled at last. “Woobah yahwah oobooh! Bow wahbah woobooyah? Bow wow?” he asked Bruno, severely. Of course Bruno understood all this, easily enough. All Fairies understand Doggee—-that is, Dog-language. But, as you may find it a little difficult, just at first, I had better put it into English for you. “Humans, I verily believe! A couple of stray Humans! What Dog do you belong to? What do you want?” “We don't belong to a Dog!” Bruno began, in Doggee. (“Peoples never belongs to Dogs!” he whispered to Sylvie.) But Sylvie hastily checked him, for fear of hurting the Mastiff's feelings. “Please, we want a little food, and a night's lodging—if there's room in the house,” she added timidly. Sylvie spoke Doggee very prettily: but I think it's almost better, for you, to give the conversation in English. “The house, indeed!” growled the Sentinel. “Have you never seen a Palace in your life? Come along with me! His Majesty must settle what's to be done with you.” They followed him through the entrance-hall, down a long passage, and into a magnificent Saloon, around which were grouped dogs of all sorts and sizes. Two splendid Blood-hounds were solemnly sitting up, one on each side of the crown-bearer. Two or three Bull-dogs—-whom I guessed to be the Body-Guard of the King—were waiting in grim silence: in fact the only voices at all plainly audible were those of two little dogs, who had mounted a settee, and were holding a lively discussion that looked very like a quarrel. “Lords and Ladies in Waiting, and various Court Officials,” our guide gruffly remarked, as he led us in. Of me the Courtiers took no notice whatever: but Sylvie and Bruno were the subject of many inquisitive looks, and many whispered remarks, of which I only distinctly caught one—made by a sly-looking Dachshund to his friend “Bah wooh wahyah hoobah Oobooh, hah bah?” (“She's not such a bad-looking Human, is she?”) Leaving the new arrivals in the centre of the Saloon, the Sentinel advanced to a door, at the further end of it, which bore an inscription, painted on it in Doggee, “Royal Kennel—scratch and Yell.” Before doing this, the Sentinel turned to the children, and said “Give me your names.” “We'd rather not!” Bruno exclaimed, pulling' Sylvie away from the door. “We want them ourselves. Come back, Sylvie! Come quick!” “Nonsense!” said Sylvie very decidedly: and gave their names in Doggee. Then the Sentinel scratched violently at the door, and gave a yell that made Bruno shiver from head to foot. “Hooyah wah!” said a deep voice inside. (That's Doggee for “Come in!”) “It's the King himself!” the Mastiff whispered in an awestruck tone. “Take off your wigs, and lay them humbly at his paws.” (What we should call “at his feet.”) Sylvie was just going to explain, very politely, that really they couldn't perform that ceremony, because their wigs wouldn't come off, when the door of the Royal Kennel opened, and an enormous Newfoundland Dog put his head out. “Bow wow?” was his first question. “When His Majesty speaks to you,” the Sentinel hastily whispered to Bruno, “you should prick up your ears!” Bruno looked doubtfully at Sylvie. “I'd rather not, please,” he said. “It would hurt.” {Image...The dog-king} “It doesn't hurt a bit!” the Sentinel said with some indignation. “Look! It's like this!” And he pricked up his ears like two railway signals. Sylvie gently explained matters. “I'm afraid we ca'n't manage it,” she said in a low voice. “I'm very sorry: but our ears haven't got the right—” she wanted to say “machinery” in Doggee: but she had forgotten the word, and could only think of “steam-engine.” The Sentinel repeated Sylvie's explanation to the King. “Can't prick up their ears without a steam-engine!” His Majesty exclaimed. “They must be curious creatures! I must have a look at them!” And he came out of his Kennel, and walked solemnly up to the children. What was the amazement—nor to say the horror of the whole assembly, when Sylvie actually patted His Majesty on the head, while Bruno seized his long ears and pretended to tie them together under his chin! The Sentinel groaned aloud: a beautiful Greyhound who appeared to be one of the Ladies in Waiting—fainted away: and all the other Courtiers hastily drew back, and left plenty of room for the huge Newfoundland to spring upon the audacious strangers, and tear them limb from limb. Only—he didn't. On the contrary his Majesty actually smiled so far as a Dog can smile—and (the other Dogs couldn't believe their eyes, but it was true, all the same) his Majesty wagged his tail! “Yah! Hooh hahwooh!” (that is “Well! I never!”) was the universal cry. His Majesty looked round him severely, and gave a slight growl, which produced instant silence. “Conduct my friends to the banqueting-hall!” he said, laying such an emphasis on “my friends” that several of the dogs rolled over helplessly on their backs and began to lick Bruno's feet. A procession was formed, but I only ventured to follow as far as the door of the banqueting-hall, so furious was the uproar of barking dogs within. So I sat down by the King, who seemed to have gone to sleep, and waited till the children returned to say good-night, when His Majesty got up and shook himself. “Time for bed!” he said with a sleepy yawn. “The attendants will show you your room,” he added, aside, to Sylvie and Bruno. “Bring lights!” And, with a dignified air, he held out his paw for them to kiss. But the children were evidently not well practised in Court-manners. Sylvie simply stroked the great paw: Bruno hugged it: the Master of the Ceremonies looked shocked. All this time Dog-waiters, in splendid livery, were running up with lighted candles: but, as fast as they put them upon the table, other waiters ran away with them, so that there never seemed to be one for me, though the Master kept nudging me with his elbow, and repeating, “I ca'n't let you sleep here! You're not in bed, you know!” I made a great effort, and just succeeded in getting out the words “I know I'm not. I'm in an arm-chair.” “Well, forty winks will do you no harm,” the Master said, and left me. I could scarcely hear his words: and no wonder: he was leaning over the side of a ship, that was miles away from the pier on which I stood. The ship passed over the horizon and I sank back into the arm-chair. The next thing I remember is that it was morning: breakfast was just over: Sylvie was lifting Bruno down from a high chair, and saying to a Spaniel, who was regarding them with a most benevolent smile, “Yes, thank you we've had a very nice breakfast. Haven't we, Bruno?” “There was too many bones in the”—Bruno began, but Sylvie frowned at him, and laid her finger on her lips, for, at this moment, the travelers were waited on by a very dignified officer, the Head-Growler, whose duty it was, first to conduct them to the King to bid him farewell and then to escort them to the boundary of Dogland. The great Newfoundland received them most affably but instead of saying “good-bye” he startled the Head-growler into giving three savage growls, by announcing that he would escort them himself. It is a most unusual proceeding, your Majesty! the Head-Growler exclaimed, almost choking with vexation at being set aside, for he had put on his best Court-suit, made entirely of cat-skins, for the occasion. “I shall escort them myself,” his Majesty repeated, gently but firmly, laying aside the Royal robes, and changing his crown for a small coronet, “and you may stay at home.” “I are glad!” Bruno whispered to Sylvie, when they had got well out of hearing. “He were so welly cross!” And he not only patted their Royal escort, but even hugged him round the neck in the exuberance of his delight. His Majesty calmly wagged the Royal tail. “It's quite a relief,” he said, “getting away from that Palace now and then! Royal Dogs have a dull life of it, I can tell you! Would you mind” (this to Sylvie, in a low voice, and looking a little shy and embarrassed) “would you mind the trouble of just throwing that stick for me to fetch?” Sylvie was too much astonished to do anything for a moment: it sounded such a monstrous impossibility that a King should wish to run after a stick. But Bruno was equal to the occasion, and with a glad shout of “Hi then! Fetch it, good Doggie!” he hurled it over a clump of bushes. The next moment the Monarch of Dogland had bounded over the bushes, and picked up the stick, and came galloping back to the children with it in his mouth. Bruno took it from him with great decision. “Beg for it!” he insisted; and His Majesty begged. “Paw!” commanded Sylvie; and His Majesty gave his paw. In short, the solemn ceremony of escorting the travelers to the boundaries of Dogland became one long uproarious game of play! “But business is business!” the Dog-King said at last. “And I must go back to mine. I couldn't come any further,” he added, consulting a dog-watch, which hung on a chain round his neck, “not even if there were a Cat insight!” They took an affectionate farewell of His Majesty, and trudged on. “That were a dear dog!” Bruno exclaimed. “Has we to go far, Sylvie? I's tired!” “Not much further, darling!” Sylvie gently replied. “Do you see that shining, just beyond those trees? I'm almost sure it's the gate of Fairyland! I know it's all golden—Father told me so and so bright, so bright!” she went on dreamily. “It dazzles!” said Bruno, shading his eyes with one little hand, while the other clung tightly to Sylvie's hand, as if he were half-alarmed at her strange manner. For the child moved on as if walking in her sleep, her large eyes gazing into the far distance, and her breath coming and going in quick pantings of eager delight. I knew, by some mysterious mental light, that a great change was taking place in my sweet little friend (for such I loved to think her) and that she was passing from the condition of a mere Outland Sprite into the true Fairy-nature. Upon Bruno the change came later: but it was completed in both before they reached the golden gate, through which I knew it would be impossible for me to follow. I could but stand outside, and take a last look at the two sweet children, ere they disappeared within, and the golden gate closed with a bang. And with such a bang! “It never will shut like any other cupboard-door,” Arthur explained. “There's something wrong with the hinge. However, here's the cake and wine. And you've had your forty winks. So you really must get off to bed, old man! You're fit for nothing else. Witness my hand, Arthur Forester, M.D.” By this time I was wide-awake again. “Not quite yet!” I pleaded. “Really I'm not sleepy now. And it isn't midnight yet.” “Well, I did want to say another word to you,” Arthur replied in a relenting tone, as he supplied me with the supper he had prescribed. “Only I thought you were too sleepy for it to-night.” We took our midnight meal almost in silence; for an unusual nervousness seemed to have seized on my old friend. “What kind of a night is it?” he asked, rising and undrawing the window-curtains, apparently to change the subject for a minute. A VISIT TO DOGLAND

We work in environments that aren’t optimized for solid decision-making. We also have irrational or negative thought patterns from time to time. This leads to habitual errors in thinking, which creates an inaccurate view of reality. From an evolutionary standpoint, human beings developed cognitive distortions as a survival method—adapting thinking for immediate survival made the human race come this far. Still, the same thoughts that served us well in prehistoric times are no longer relevant to the information and digital age we live in today. Human beings have achieved some amazing feats in technology, medicine, food, agriculture etc etc but the neural circuits in our brains haven’t had enough time to catch up with the new realities. There are many different causes of cognitive biases, but it’s our brains’ inclination towards mental shortcuts that plays a major contributing role. Most of what we do daily exists in automatic processing. We have habits and defaults that we rarely examine, from gripping a pencil to swerving to avoid an auto accident. We need shortcuts, but they come at a cost. Many decision-making missteps originate from the pressure on the reflexive system to do its job fast and automatically. No one wakes up in the morning and says, ‘I want to be closed-minded and dismissive of others - Annie Duke Combating these cognitive distortions during high-stakes decisions or events where irrational thoughts have long-term implications requires self-awareness and practicing good habits of the mind, which enable you to make conscious decisions as opposed to letting your brain run on autopilot. In part 1, I will cover these 5 cognitive distortions Ambiguity effect Spotlight effect Framing effect Emotional seesaw All-or-nothing thinking Let’s dive into each one. Ambiguity effect The ambiguity effect is a cognitive bias where decision-making is affected by a lack of information, or "ambiguity". The effect implies that people tend to select options for which the probability of a favorable outcome is known, over an option for which the probability of a favorable outcome is unknown. We all dislike uncertainty and the discomfort that comes with not knowing how the outcome will turn out. This makes us play safe—opting for decisions with certainty while letting go of great opportunities involving risk. Not taking risks stalls growth. Due diligence is important, but so is the ability to be bold and take calculated risks from time to time. People early in their careers make this mistake all the time. They’re afraid of failing and worry about what the mistakes would mean to their career. So they keep picking options they already know how to do well as opposed to going after opportunities that will help them grow and build new skills. The short-term comfort that comes with doing things they have always done or where the risk of failure is low, limits their long-term growth. Example of ambiguity effect cognitive distortion Let’s say your boss gives you an option between two projects. One project has more clarity than the other, and has a higher chance of success, but the amount of learning is limited. The other project has many loose elements and success is not guaranteed. The opportunity to tackle the unknowns and connect the missing pieces should attract many, but the ambiguity effect makes most people opt for the safer option. How to tackle it To avoid the effect of this cognitive distortion, practice stepping out of your comfort zone—pick hard problems, purposefully put yourself in situations that make you uncomfortable and require you to get over the stress and anxiety that comes with not knowing how to do something. Doing this will build the mental muscle to embrace risks so that you no longer see unknowns as a threat, but rather an opportunity to reach for your potential and build new skills. In short, less risk = less growth. Spotlight effect The spotlight effect is the psychological phenomenon in which people tend to believe they are being noticed or thought of more than they really are. Overestimating the degree to which others are noticing our actions leads to unnecessary stress and anxiety. Assuming others are thinking about us and judging our behavior and actions prevents us from staying authentic or truly expressing ourselves. This cognitive distortion makes us obsess about our past mistakes and the things we said or did. While we are focused on how others are judging us all the time, others are doing the same thing. They are so worked up about their own flaws and imperfections that they hardly have time to think about you. An accurate evaluation of how much one is noticed by others is uncommon. Example of spotlight effect cognitive distortion Let’s say you gave a presentation to your group on an upcoming product line. Everything went well except for one mistake that got highlighted during the discussion. Instead of being happy about how well it all turned out, your mind keeps drifting to that one moment when the mistake was pointed out. The meeting is over, and everyone has moved on, but you can’t stop thinking about that one moment. Under the spotlight effect, your inner dialogue keeps repeating, “How can I make that mistake? Everyone must think how stupid I am.” How to tackle it To avoid the effect of this cognitive distortion, instead of worrying about what others are thinking, remind yourself that no one really cares about you. Everyone is stuck in their own spotlight effect and have no cognitive capacity to put you in the spotlight. In short, focus on doing your best work and stop worrying about what others are thinking. Framing effect The framing effect is a cognitive bias in which people decide on options based on whether the options are presented with positive or negative connotations, e.g. as a loss or as a gain. People tend to avoid risk when a positive frame is presented but seek risks when a negative frame is presented. Even when multiple options are equally effective, depending on how the information is presented, what features are highlighted and how it’s framed, one can be more appealing than the other. The framing effect makes us choose worse options that are better framed over options that are better but poorly framed. When directly compared or weighted against each other, losses loom larger than gains.” In other words, our automatic inclination towards loss aversion makes us avoid options with loss. So we naturally find the option that has positive attributes highlighted more attractive - Daniel Kahneman Example of framing effect cognitive distortion For example: Let’s say two product managers present ideas for two new products to be developed. One PM states that there’s a 90% chance that the product will be a hit, while the other states that there’s a 10% chance that it will fail. Under the framing effect, even though both pieces of information point to the same outcome, you may choose the one with 90% success rate. How to tackle it To avoid the effect of this cognitive distortion, don’t make a choice based on how something is framed. Dig deeper, ask questions, evaluate them on other dimensions than the one being presented. Remind yourself: just because poor information is framed in a positive light does not make that option better. Doing this will not guarantee success, but the process will likely lead to a better choice. In short, don’t fall for better storytelling and look beyond words. All or nothing thinking In all or nothing thinking, you think in extremes. You’re either a success or a failure. Your boss was either right or wrong. Your friend was either fair or unfair. You either win or lose. When two words always and never rule your life, you fail to see that your life does not operate at the extremes, it’s somewhere in between. Decisions are not always there’s a shade of gray in between. good or bad, Under the effect of this cognitive bias you fail to see that there isn’t a 1:1 correlation between a decision and an outcome—a good decision does not always lead to a good outcome and a bad decision may also sometimes lead to a good outcome. When we work backward from results to figure out why those things happened, we are susceptible to a variety of cognitive traps, like assuming causation when there is only a correlation, or cherry-picking data to confirm the narrative we prefer. We will pound a lot of square pegs into round holes to maintain the illusion of a tight relationship between our outcomes and our decisions - Annie Duke Example of all or nothing thinking cognitive distortion Let’s say you decided to integrate the chat platform in your organization with a third party provider. At the time you made the decision, that company was doing really well and checked all your requirements. It appeared like a really good deal. However, just the next year the company changes its integration model and you realize that the set of features that were earlier promised to you will no longer be available. Even though the new chat platform meets a large part of your requirements, under the effect of “all or nothing thinking,” you may consider it a bad deal. You fail to realize that you made the best decision at that moment and there’s no way to predict the future. How to tackle it To avoid the effect of this cognitive distortion, don’t think in extremes—identify what matters and evaluate the trade offs of various options. Instead of a 100% guarantee that it will succeed, choose an option that makes the most sense at the moment. In short, an undesirable outcome less than 100% is not the same as 0%. Emotional seesaw An emotional seesaw plays out in much the same way as experiencing a range of emotions while sitting on an actual seesaw as it goes up and down. You may be hopeful one moment and feel despair the next. Some days you are unstoppable, other days, you can’t seem to get off the ground. At times you’re energized and ready to take on the world; other times, you get the feeling that everything around you is falling apart. Getting sucked by your emotions disturbs your cognitive functioning, which impairs your ability to think clearly. In some cases, the sudden shift of emotions (for example, from fear to one of relief) can even lead to mindlessness. With less cognitive resources at hand, you may make decisions without thinking through consequences. Example of emotional seesaw cognitive distortion Let’s say you just discovered that you made a mistake at work which leads to a sudden rush of negative emotions like fear, shame and embarrassment. However, no one finds out your mistake which brings feelings of relief. When this happens, under the influence of the emotional seesaw you just experienced, your cognitive functioning is impaired. With less cognitive capacity at hand, the subsequent decisions you make will be less thought out, faster or made with little effort. How to tackle it To avoid the effect of this cognitive distortion, be watchful of strong emotions. When experiencing them, delay decision making or pause and consciously allocate resources to think through your decision instead of going with the easiest option or one involving the least effort. In short, don’t let your emotions overwhelm you or control your thinking. In life and business, the person with the fewest blind spots wins. Removing blind spots means we see, interact with, and move closer to understanding reality. We think better. And thinking better is about finding simple processes that help us work through problems from multiple dimensions and perspectives, allowing us to better choose solutions that fit what matters to us. Negative self-talk is poison. Like cyanide, it wreaks havoc on our system, killing our motivation, happiness, and peace of mind. Left unchecked, it leads to doubt – and from doubt to fear, insecurity, and inaction. I have no doubt that these feelings are hitting a nerve with at least a few of you. It's so incredibly easy to slip into a negative inner monologue; you don't even realize it's happening until you're in the thick of it, and once you are, it's very hard to break free. In preparing for today's newsletter, I did a little research into the science behind negative self-talk and why it's such a thorn in our side. Did you know that imagining something over and overuses the same mechanisms as physically doing it? In the same way, that telling yourself something repetitively will eventually have an effect on your beliefs and behavior. studies have concluded For the layman, I suppose it's like a self-fulfilling prophecy. The thing is, you don't have to believe everything that goes through your head; in fact, it's better not to. And that's what I want to talk about today. Learning About Self-Talk with Deborah Driggs If you've been listening to my Success Story podcasts since March, you might have tuned in to a conversation I had with ex-Playboy model Deborah Driggs. She's a multi-talented woman – an esteemed life insurance agent, motivational speaker, and author – and she's been through a few rough patches in her life. I found it fascinating to hear Deborah talk about the many twists and turns in both her career and her personal life. She has this unfailing determination; it's as though her subconscious always knew that something better was coming if she only held on and kept her head up. Not only that, but Deborah managed to completely reinvent herself in her forties to become one of the most recognized life insurance agents in the country. "I got married, I had three kids, and in 2004 I got divorced. And I found myself at 40 years old – broke, divorced, three young children – and having to say, now what is life going to look like? What am I going to do?" After dabbling briefly in real estate, Deborah realized her talent: people skills. "I had found out from real estate that I was really good at taking care of people, and customers, and clients, and all of that in sales. So I made the decision to take a job in New York. And I reconnected with the company that did my life insurance." She'd never worked in the space before, and negative self-talk was certainly present in the beginning – but now she's wildly successful. It's a great reminder that your career right out of college doesn't have to be your end game. Self-Talk: Breaking It Down If you're interested in hearing more from Deborah, I can't recommend our conversation enough. You can find it . You can probably fill in the blanks with your own experiences because the sad reality is that of our daily thoughts are negative. And while a certain degree of negative self-talk is normal and even healthy – it's what spurs us to take action and improve things in our lives – too much negativity can be paralyzing and destructive. around eighty percent In the content creation business, I know from first-hand experience that negative self-talk waits around every corner. Why didn't you get as many likes on that video? No one commented on your blog – I guess people don't like you. Your content just can't compete with the others out there. Before too long, you begin to treat yourself as your own worst enemy, and it becomes harder and harder to take any kind of action – especially the kind that might result in failure. Why Does It Happen? As I mentioned earlier, self-talk is truly a science. But it's also linked in with our ancestral history. In , we literally had to rely on our anxiety and worst-case thinking in order to survive. If we didn't, we might not make it through the night when out on a hunt – and our genes would die with us. prehistoric times Fast forward to now, and that same worst-case thinking is still hardwired into our brains. It's what makes us give up trying for fear of getting something wrong, and it keeps us up at night worrying about things we can't control. The problem is that we aren't in such a high-stakes environment anymore. We don't need to hunt for our meals or avoid being hunted by predators. So why does our brain still insist on treating us like it's the end of the world every time something goes wrong? The answer is that, for the most part, our brains haven't caught up with modern life yet. And as a result, we often find ourselves stuck in negative thought loops. Yikes. What can we do about it? The Many Faces of Negative Self-Talk First of all – before getting to the antidote – let's clarify what it means in psychological terms to experience self-directed negativity. There are actually a few different variants of negative self-talk that can plague people, and each has its own unique flavor (great). They're called . Let's take a look. cognitive distortions Filtering Have you ever been congratulated for a job well done, but all you can see are the mistakes and imperfections? This is a hallmark of filtering, or only paying attention to the negative aspects of any given situation. It's a toxic habit that can lead you down the rabbit hole of pessimism and self-doubt. Catastrophizing This is similar to the previous section about our prehistoric ancestors. Hunter-gatherers needed to catastrophize; if they prepared for the worst-case scenario (aka, starving or being attacked) they were more likely to survive. But in our modern world, this cognitive distortion is less than helpful – it only causes unnecessary stress and doubt. Personalization Now, for a real doozy. To personalize means to take responsibility for everything bad that happens, even if you've not got anything to do with the situation. Your boss acted hostilely towards you? It's because they hate you. Your partner forgot your anniversary? It's because they don't love you. You get the idea. This cognitive distortion is a major source of guilt and self-blame. Polarization Too many of us live in a state of polarity, or black and white thinking. There's no room for nuance or ambiguity; everything is reduced to extremes. It's right or it isn't. You're smart or you're stupid. They love you or they wish you dead. This cognitive distortion can lead to a lot of rigidity in our thinking and an inability to see other perspectives. I know there are plenty more cognitive distortions, but these pertain most to negative self-talk. But that’s enough dwelling on the negative – are you ready to hear some strategies? Let’s do it. Combatting Your Inner Negativity In the final parts of our interview conversation, Deborah and I talked about this concept of negative self-talk and how she combats it. It was one of those 'Ah-hah!' moments that really made me sit back and think; her strategies are absolutely golden. Let's dig into the highlights. Strategy 1: Name it (and don't shame it) When you wake up on a dreary morning, alarm blaring and bed hair in full swing, you might be prone to some pessimism. Deborah had some excellent advice for dealing with those dull days. "Name it. Name that person in your head. Then you can tell it, 'Thanks for that thought today. But now you can go away. I'm in charge.' When you give it a name, you make it yours. You own it." Come to think of it, this is a strategy that some psychologists use to deal with intrusive thoughts. Recognize them for what they are – just thoughts, and not a reflection of reality – and then dismiss them. I don't mean you should try to banish them from existence. Anywhere you create conflict with your mind and body is going to cause problems. But by naming the thoughts, you can exist alongside them without altering your beliefs. Strategy 2: Turn your monologue into a dialogue I had to smile at this strategy because it does sound a little strange at first. But I have no doubt that it works. "We're all going to have negative talk – there's just no getting around it. There are going to be days when we don't want to get out of bed; we just want to pull the covers over. And that's the voice that I talk to – 'Oh, really? Okay, let's talk. Why do you think that?'" Building on the first strategy, I guess this helps to remove yourself from the thoughts even further. It gives them a separate identity, and in a way, that makes it easier to silence your monologue. It also helps to foster a sense of friendliness towards yourself. After all, these thoughts are just trying to keep you safe, right? So you might as well have a civil conversation with them! "People might say 'She's talking to herself, she's absolutely lost it!' But I think that when you call something out, it makes it less of a negative thing." Strategy 3: The yellow notepad I like this next strategy, because, to me, it's like journaling on the go. You'll love this if you're someone who struggles to journal routinely; it's an as-needed kind of thing. "Anytime that I've gotten into a deep funk, I take out a yellow pad. And I know it's so old school. But if something's going on, I literally write down all my thoughts about it, and why I'm upset about it. And all of a sudden, it doesn't bother me anymore." Now, this next part is the strategy that really impressed me. I've actually never heard anyone talk about using this technique – but you can bet that I'll be trying it out. "Write a letter to God, or to the universe, or to angels, whatever you believe in. You could write it to Mother Earth. I don't care. You could write it to the plant on your desk. Write whatever it is that's really upsetting you. 'Dear pot plant, why am I so upset about this?' Then you write the second letter to yourself as if you're the plant. 'Here's why you feel that way.' And you write it as if you have all the answers." I know – that feels like a cheat code you shouldn't have access to, and I was definitely skeptical at first. But Deborah explained how it works in such a simple, yet beautiful way. "Here's what I believe: the answers are inside of us. We know. And when you really take the time to do that two-part letter, it's so tremendously insightful. Because if you do it from your heart, it's just looking at your part in the situation of why something's happening." Did you get that? It's stepping back from a situation, taking the perspective of an external party, and explaining things from that angle. It's a way of exploring your thoughts and feelings in a more objective way which, let's face it, we all need from time to time. If you've ever looked back on old journal entries, you might know how this feels. "Why didn't I realize how stupid I was being? The answers were all there on the page!" "How could I have taken that job in sales when I was writing so passionately about being a photographer?" It's in those moments of clarity that make us realize: we had the answers within us the whole time. It only takes a perspective shift – a brief departure from your own point of view – to access that knowledge. I hope you'll give these strategies a try the next time you find yourself in the grip of negative self-talk. I can't promise you that they will work for everyone, or that they will work all the time. But I'll sure as hell be giving them a go the next time I need some help. Thanks, Deborah! Wrap-Up: The True Antidote From everything we've talked about here, I suppose combatting your negative self-talk comes down to one major thing: your ability to shift perspectives and to hold every thought captive until it earns a rightful spot in your mind. There's no room for perfectionism, or for any other form of black-and-white thinking in this process – both will only serve to amplify your negative self-talk. Instead, you'll need to be patient and compassionate with yourself, as you work to unravel the thoughts and beliefs that have been fueling your negative self-talk for years. This is a challenging journey, but it's also an immensely rewarding one. And I have no doubt that strategies like Deborah's – journaling, inner dialogue, and naming each thought – will help you get there. Importance of Data Privacy The usage of the internet has grown tremendously. No one ever would have imagined it in the early ’80s or 90’s time. But within a very short period, the Internet has shown drastic growth. The use cases of the internet vary from person to person. Some use it for official purposes, while others for their personal use. The world runs on the Internet today. The increase in the usage of the Internet reduces our workload, makes our lives easy, and connects us with our family and friends living across the globe but at the same time, we are losing our privacy. We use the Internet for various kinds of applications in our day-to-day lives. Today’s applications in the Web 2.0 era require users to signup for an account using their personal information. Only when you provide this information, you’re granted access to the application. The few people who created these applications control them. They can access all our data and we trust them to do so. But what if our data is commoditized or hacked in a data breach? Most applications today collect users' data for their personal usage too. They either share it with third parties or use it to promote targeted ad content. By storing our data, they are essentially creating digital copies of us so they can analyze our interests and sell their products better. Data privacy is the most important thing in this digitized world. People should not pay for their privacy as the cost of using the Internet. What happens if our data ends in the hands of criminals or fraudulent individuals? Most of us don’t know if our personal information has been or do not even care about its implications. Some people are lethargic and don’t think about what these corporations will do with their data. The sour truth is tasted only when it comes to fruition. So to secure our data privacy in the second iteration of the web, the web2.0, is a little bit difficult and in some cases, we can’t even access apps without providing our data. So what is the solution? leaked in a data breach Balancing Privacy & Transparency People need to balance privacy and transparency. Sharing one’s data with others or storing their information without their knowledge is piracy. Many companies have lost their grace due to privacy issues. The issue can be rectified by blockchain technology. Blockchain-based apps do not collect any of your personal data to access your account. So you, the user, can truly stay private. Blockchain technology is not only used for building DApps but can be used for financial transactions too. But blockchains are inherently transparent. The details of the transactions are laid bare for everyone to see. The amount that was sent, and to whom it has been sent, will be recorded. This creates additional privacy issues in that anyone can see how much wealth you hold, where you’ve transferred money, and once again, create a digital footprint. To prevent this, were invented. These blockchains do not reveal the amount or the sender and receiver identity. Transaction hash is used to confirm whether the transaction has been verified. This means that your transactions and other activities will stay private while being transparent for verification. This is how privacy blockchains balance privacy and transparency. privacy-based blockchains Why We Shouldn’t Reinvent the Wheel in Web 3.0 Due to the loss of privacy and insecurity in Web2.0, blockchains are reinventing the world wide web as we know it. This new iteration of the web is called Web 3.0. In Web3, we should not repeat the same mistakes that we did in Web2. So to develop a decentralized privacy-first Internet, Beldex has proposed a solution. It is a privacy coin with a private ecosystem. We building an ecosystem of decentralized applications. Each DApp has a different use case and ensures users' privacy. : It is a chat application with an integrated wallet. The user need not provide their personal information to sign up for the account. It is completely anonymous and end-to-end encrypted. No metadata like timestamp, location, or size of the message will be shared. BChat It is a dVPN service that users can use to mask their IP address. In most cases, hackers track our IP addresses to monitor our activities. BelNet will mask the user's IP address and obfuscate their location. So no one can follow you like a shadow. Masternodes on the Beldex network help route traffic via BelNet. BelNet: We all know that we are fed up with annoying ads. Wherever we go, ads will follow us. There are even ads that show us ads based on our location and our interests. Haven’t you felt it odd that you receive notifications related to hotels and showrooms from nearby places? Businesses embed cookies onto your device to track your location whenever you visit their website. But on the Beldex Browser, there are no cookies, so your location, IP address, and other PI are safe while you browse the Internet. Beldex Browser: This is developed for interoperability between different blockchains. One can use BDX on another blockchain by using the Beldex Bridge. Users can swap BDX to wBDX, a pegged asset, to gain access to or leverage the benefits of DApps on other blockchains. It will increase the potential of the network. Currently, Beldex-Binance smart chain bridge is live. In the future, users can expect the Beldex-Ethereum bridge and Beldex-Polkadot bridge. Beldex Bridge: By using the Beldex privacy protocol, one can anonymize the transactions of assets like Bitcoin, Ethereum, or Litecoin. To accomplish this, the asset is first burned and minted as a pegged token. The pegged token has the properties of anonymity. Thus, the transfer of these tokens is untraceable. Once the pegged token is sent, the receiver can redeem the original asset. Beldex Privacy Protocol: Feature stepping of Beldex: Zero-knowledge proof is under research by Beldex. By doing this, the security will enhance and transaction speed is increased. So users can transfer BDX in a reduced time with a low transaction fee. The scalability of the BDX will be increased. zk-SNARKs: Beldex is integrating with the Ethereum Virtual Machine to develop smart contract functionality on the Beldex chain. The dApps on the Beldex blockchain will be private and have very low fees. EVM: The user can create readable domains in the Beldex blockchain. One can send BDX to others with the use of the BNS domain. BNS Domains: Consensus on Beldex It is a proof of stake blockchain that consumes less energy and gives credits to its validators instead of miners. Validators play a major role in validating the transactions. The rewards will be distributed to all validators based on a reward queue so that the distribution is democratic. POS is also instrumental in reducing the carbon footprint of the network. To Conclude The use cases of the Beldex blockchain will meet the needs of people, crypto users, business people, and government authorities. User privacy is of prime importance to Beldex. It will secure user data, make your transactions anonymous, and pave the way for Web3.0.

Privacy in Blockchain: Building A Surveillance Free World 

It was one of those days when I really wanted to read an interesting story. Who wouldn't be intrigued by a title, such as this one: A software engineer spent 8 hours daily applying to entry-level coding jobs for 6 months. She was rejected 357 times before receiving an offer. I wanted to read more, but I couldn't, at first. Why? Because I hit the paywall, what's why. I had to play along, and sacrifice one of my emails. OK. Moving on with my story about the Business Insider's story. Where was I? Ah, I remember. Wait! How is that even possible? Something ain't right here! In 2019, before the pandemic hit, CompTIA reported that the US had a shortage of roughly 918,000 software engineers in the talent pools. You would think that's the bad news...Well, wait until you read this, as well: We are living an ever-worsening rise in the demand for software engineers. The Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates that by 2026 the shortage of engineers in the US will exceed 1.2M. The Chicken or The Egg First Job Dilemma We've all been there at one point in our careers, haven't we? It's one of your first job interviews. The first question is about your working experience. And, round and round we go. You know what? It doesn't have to be this way. I was reading when I stumbled upon this great comment (the author gave his permission for his comment to be shared online): an answer to an interesting question on Quora As you can see, this gentleman found a way. I'm not saying is the best possible way, but it clearly worked for him. Back to the hero of our Business Insider story. Sophia Cheong's career started at a Korean barbecue restaurant in California. Then a coworker started teaching her how to code. I wish I could say, and the rest is history, but unfortunately, I can't. Cheong immediately used the money she had saved from restaurant paychecks to enroll in a 13-week software-engineering boot camp called Hack Reactor, where she completed over 1,000 hours of full-stack coding. Let me sum up the "highlights" of her six-month-long epic job hunt journey: Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Cheong applied to every entry-level software-engineering job or internship she could find Cheong had interviewed with 40 employers and been rejected 357 times by companies big and small On top of submitting applications, she reached out to tech recruiters every day and created an online portfolio Cheong said, adding that recruiters would suggest reaching out in a year after she had more experience And, you know how they say, the night is darkest just before the dawn. True. So true. The same week Cheong was supposed to head back to working at the restaurant, she received two job offers. That's it! The happy ending we've all been waiting for. Nothing more to read or talk about here. I'm not sure whether or not I'm the only one, but I just couldn't let it go. There was something more to this from-zero-to-hero story, but I couldn't figure out what it was exactly. What Happened to the Mother of all Questions? Do you remember the Quora guy who had to sacrifice one working week to get a job? Of course, you do. But, did you know that I had to sacrifice both my pride and price to get my very first freelance gig? I got two bucks and a five-star review for my first freelance project. Don't you find it a little bit hard to believe that the Business Insider's journalist or contributor forgot or missed to ask the most important question of them all? Haven't you heard about freelance platforms? Why haven't you tried your luck as a freelancer too? I know what you're going to say, hey Nesha, you gorgeous, but a biased example of environment-friendly masculinity and articles readability, you want to mention your beloved freelance website - goLance. Sorry, but that's not true. Sophia Cheong could've signed up on Upwork. Or, how about Freelancer dot com? With all due respect, I think that Toptal would've been a mission impossible for a beginner. Also, Fiverr is all about the gigs. So, I would gladly recommend it to Sophia if she had taken a web design rather than a coding course. Finally, instead of sharing her story on LinkedIn, Sophia should have submitted it here, on Hacker Noon. She could have also become a member of the growing Slogging Community. There are no guarantees, but at least, she wouldn't have to deal with the aftermath of her LinkedIn post when: Hundreds of job applicants struggling to find work flooded the comment section, asking for advice and sharing similar stories of constant rejections. Don't get me wrong. Words of support and comfort mean a lot, especially, if you find out that you aren't the only one going through the hell of the first job hunting. But, I'm pretty much sure that Sophia got tired of words while searching for jobs. And The Moral of Your Story Is? To be quite honest, I'm not sure. I think that the good old American Tech Dream is alive and kicking. If you are a job finder, who also happened to be a developer, don't believe everything you read in Business Insider. I just threw a rhyme right here and now - for the record. Coders, beginners or veterans, freelance websites, and Hacker Noon stories: that's the 'Holy Tech Trinity.'
