In the world of tech startups, the term «growth» has become almost the epitome of success. Exponential growth, growth hacking, growth mindset, growth team, growth engine, hypergrowth. If a startup doesn’t show enough growth, it’s doing it wrong. In his article published in 2012, the founder of the startup accelerator Y Combinator Paul Graham argued that growth is the very essence of a startup: Being newly founded does not in itself make a company a startup. Nor is it necessary for a startup to work on technology, or take venture funding, or have some sort of "exit. The only essential thing is growth. Everything else we associate with startups follows from growth. It comes as no surprise why growth is so coveted. We all know the success stories of Dropbox, Uber, Airbnb, Slack, and Revolut. They are the role models of startup growth. But few companies succeed. Exploding Topics say that 9 out of 10 startups fail. In 2021, AngelList expected 2.5% of venture-backed seed-stage startups to become a unicorn. Yet, most startups still commit themselves to growth, ignoring the inevitable sacrifices it takes from both the product and the people who build it. Bugs that never get fixed because they are low priority, misalignment between different teams, ever-changing processes and organizational structure, growing tech debt that will be reworked as soon as a company finds its Ideal Customer Profile, inherently outdated documentation, abandoned features, neglected career development plans, poor work-life balance, chaotic environment, lack of focus — these are all side-effects of startup growth. But it doesn’t have to be this way. In this article, I explore 5 tech companies that approach growth differently, resulting in healthier business and working environments. 37signals The original rebel of the tech industry, 37signals is the company behind the project management platform Basecamp, email service HEY, and the recently launched line of purchasable (instead of renting) software Once. Initially a web design firm founded in 1999, the company switched to the development of Basecamp out of necessity to take on more projects. 20 years later, they have over 100,000 paying customers and make tens of millions of dollars in profit. We run a very different kind of business. We are focused on efficiency, we're not focused on growth. They're focused on growth. — Jason Fried on Lenny’s Podcast Almost everything about 37signals is different. It is a private company, with no venture capital involved. Under 100 employees, all working remotely (company founders even wrote a book aptly named Remote). They invented a product development framework called Shape Up that focuses on small, 2–3 person teams delivering meaningful impacts in 6-week cycles (they wrote a book about it too). They don’t have growth targets or OKRs; the only thing that matters is whether the company makes more than it spends. As 37signals founders Jason Fried and David Heinemeier Hansson put it, It Doesn’t Have To Be Crazy At Work. Yes, it’s the name of a book as well. I find this quote by Jason Fried summarizes the 37signals’ approach best: I think one of the most important things though to remember … is just like, humans tend to complicate things. A lot of things are hard but they're still simple until you make them complicated. Just keep in mind that you can make a lot of progress with two people, you can do a lot of great work four weeks at a time max, and you can figure things out as you go, and you don't need to know exactly where you're going, and you can be a profitable business, and you can find customers who are willing to pay for things. These are all possible things to do. And you don't need to be a big huge company to be successful. And you don't need to be a big huge company to make significant amounts of money. You don't need to do that. — Jason Fried on Lenny’s Podcast Linear A company doesn’t have to be private or go through the dot-com crash to work out an alternative approach to work. Take Linear, a venture-backed project management tool for software development founded in 2019. Jori Lallo, Karri Saarinen, and Tuomas Artman started a company on the simple premise that software lost its magic. The computing power of today is far beyond what could be imagined 20 years ago. Yet, modern software is slow, distracting, and boring. Linear strives to bring back the magic by crafting a planning tool for teams that care about quality. The founders go beyond just building a tool. They think of it as a “way” to craft quality software. They call it opinionated software and they have Linear Method to build it. One example of a strong opinion is working in cycles instead of sprints. As Karri Saarinen puts it, . The goal is to create a healthy momentum instead of reaching a finish line. “We are not really sprinting anywhere” Another point is building in public. Besides being vocal about how it works with Linear Method, the company advocates for public changelogs and lists all of its employees openly. Linear’s opinion on growth? Hire less, but more experienced professionals and solve customer problems instead of moving metrics. …sometimes the high growth, especially on the employee side, is not that great. It can create a lot of chaos or just messiness. … We just believe that you can actually build better with less people than you can with more people. — Karri Saarinen on Lenny’s Podcast Wise It’s not just smaller companies that approach growth and work differently. Wise, a product for international money transfers, employs over 5,000 people and moves about $12 billion a month across borders. The company's mission to build the best way to move and manage the world’s money is refined with four key attributes: speed of transfers, convenience of transferring money internationally, transparency of fares, and lowest possible cost. But these attributes extend beyond just the product. Take transparency for example. A Wise customer can see the total breakdown of a transfer’s fare in advance, split by what goes to a bank and what goes to Wise. But the company took a step further by making its roadmap public, with quarterly updates on the progress towards the mission. Another thing about Wise is how the company builds a conviction on what matters the most for customers. On Lenny’s Podcast, Nilan Peiris, Chief Product Officer at Wise, calls it customer-led growth: Every business I've ever worked in, it's always got these two lists, a list of things to do for your customers, and then it's got a list of things to do to make money. And you generally do everything you need to do to make money, and you do two things with the customer list. The neat thing about Wise is that we just have one list of things that you need to do to make customers happy, and it's prioritized by impact on the really hard things. If you do these really hard things, they have an incredible impact on customers, but hence on your growth, and on your shareholder value. This approach of building a strong understanding of customer problems instead of experimenting with incremental results enabled Wise to reach profitability while still growing by 30%–40% yearly. Buffer One company that took the idea of doing things differently to the next level is Buffer, a social media management platform for small businesses. While some companies share their roadmaps or changelogs publicly, Buffer opens up its key metrics and employee salaries. You can go to the Buffer website now and see for yourself that CEO makes $298,958 a year, whilst a content writer earns between $114,672 and $132,782 a year. Or you can see how the subscription fee is distributed between marketing spending, merchant fees, operational expenses, and salaries. You might want to know that Buffer’s Annual Recurring Revenue dropped from $22M in January 2020 to $18M in January 2023 and remained stable throughout 2023. It’s that open. One might argue that having ARR not growing for four years isn’t exactly an example of growth. Well, it depends on the time horizon. According to ChartMogul, only 13% of SaaS startups make $10M in ARR after 10 years in business. Buffer is way beyond that already. And the company CEO Joel Gascoigne intends to continue growing sustainably: We will strive for the kind of healthy, long-term growth that we believe will naturally follow as we focus on creating trustworthy products and providing unexpectedly delightful customer service. In the 2023 Annual Shareholder Letter, Joel elaborates on how this vision allows the company to adapt its strategy without compromising on the mission to serve and help more entrepreneurs and small businesses thrive: Beyond seeing the challenges ahead in growing this way, I personally felt a real conflict in my own sense of purpose when we dabbled with going up-market. This is one factor which led to my decision to double down on individuals, the free plan, and our down-and-wide strategy. In the world of B2B SaaS, where traditionally companies are forced to go up-market by investors, it is indeed a privilege to be able to choose growth by going in the opposite direction. Even more so when the times get tough. Ghost I’d like to end this article with an extreme example. We have only two goals at Ghost: To create a product we're incredibly proud of, and a company that provides a great life to the team building it. To achieve those goals we've thrown away most other traditional measures of success. John O’Nolan started Ghost in 2013 to bring back the ease of publishing content online that WordPress once had until, in the process of growth, it turned from a blogging platform into a Content Management System. The idea proved to be so lucrative that a landing page that described it brought John 30,000 email subscribers followed by $300,000 raised through a Kickstarter campaign. 10 years later, despite venture-backed competitors like Medium and Substack, Ghost is still non-profit and open source, making around $6.4M in ARR. Just this month the company announced the First Round Review website is now powered by Ghost. Just like Basecamp and Buffer, Ghost ditches short-term growth in favor of creating a company that will be around in 20 years. In a world where startups come and go, such longevity is a competitive advantage in itself. But how does Ghost actually do this? Largely, through the concept of arbitrary constraints. Impose upon yourself an arbitrary constraint and watch how creativity suddenly flows from you in ways that you didn't know were possible before. Because the human brain, as it turns out, likes to get out of annoying, arbitrary constraints and find ways around. Find loopholes in things. It's been a remarkable source of creativity for me. — John O’Nolan on the Indie Hackers podcast Regarding growth, there is one arbitrary constraint that worked out surprisingly well for Ghost. Setting up a business as a non-profit foundation constrains the company from running for growth just for the sake of it. Because if there are no investors and a company can’t be sold, then its valuation doesn’t really matter. What was imposed as a constraint gives the company the freedom to focus on what matters — a strong product that helps publishers grow and a happy team that enjoys building it. Afterword This is by no means an exhaustive list of companies that approach growth and work in general differently ( ). CONCLUSION In this work, we have carried out a full-blown analysis and experimental implementation of a Slice Reconciliation scheme applied to a specific CV QKD protocol (with post-selection) under simulated channel conditions anticipated for satelliteto-Earth channels. We have provided the optimal solution for the classical reconciliation process for this CV-QKD protocol in the context of massive parallelisation under the finite key regime. More specifically, we have identified the optimal block length when a large-code block is to be subdivided so as to improve the final secure key rate in bits per second. Although our results were based on a specific CV-QKD protocol and a specific GPU architecture, the type of analysis we have introduced here will apply in general terms a large suite of CV-QKD protocols run over any form of architecture that offers massive parallelisation. Our results, therefore, pave the way to optimal reconciliation system design for a wide range of practical CV-QKD systems that operate in the finite key regime. As the demand on the finite key size grows (better security thresholds), and technology advances lead to larger quantum signalling rates, the importance of optimised multithreaded CV-QKD reconciliation will grow. Optimised Multithreaded CV-QKD Reconciliation for Global Quantum Networks: Conclusion & References

Fanaticism has been, for much of American history, reserved for institutions like sports teams and universities where allegiances run so deep they can (and often have) become a central part of one’s identity. But an interesting shift occurred around the turn of the century where have come to command the same fervent admiration. individuals This happened in politics - that’s a topic for a different publication - and also in business: most prominently with Steve Jobs and Elon Musk. If you connect the dots between what drove the love of those tech leaders and recent events, it is clear the new cult hero in tech is Sam Altman. Altman clinched this position in late November after he was abruptly terminated from his position as the chief executive of OpenAI, the company he helped found in 2015. As has been covered extensively, the OpenAI board unexpectedly asked Altman to join a Google Meet link, at which point they told him he would be fired from OpenAI over what has been described as a “breakdown in communication.” Within two days, 90% of OpenAI employees had signed an open letter to the board threatening to leave OpenAI for Microsoft if they did not reinstate Altman as CEO. This was believed to be such a credible threat that Microsoft spent the weekend loading office equipment and computers into a floor at LinkedIn’s San Francisco office, preparing for their arrival. Ultimately, Altman returned to his job as CEO, and . OpenAI shuffled their board of directors And while it was a jarring sequence of events in short order, the most shocking part wasn’t his firing and re-hiring, the board re-alignment, or the fact that 90% of employees threatened to quit over the events: the biggest surprise was the broader tech industry’s reaction to Altman’s ouster. People who had no relationship with OpenAI or Altman came rushing to his full-throated defense. Opinion pieces were penned. Hundreds of hours of podcasts were recorded. Social media feeds were full of people who had his back despite the fact they had never so much as heard Altman’s voice. All of this activity went well beyond a reaction to someone getting a raw deal, and it felt familiar: like the kind of debate and memes and discourse you see play out about Steve Jobs’ role at Apple or about any of the various things Elon Musk is involved in. The response crossed into fanaticism. The Key Ingredients of a Tech Cult Hero A (perhaps unexpected) benefit of Altman’s firing and re-hiring is that it gave him one of the three core ingredients for the making of a tech cult hero: . People - Americans especially - love a comeback story, and Altman’s was unlike any we had seen before, especially with regard to how quickly it played out. resilience When Jobs was fired from Apple as a result of corporate politics, it took twelve years before he returned to the helm - true to the speed with which things play out in 2024, Altman’s journey took three days. Despite the brevity of his absence, it was intense, and the stakes were high, much like the (many) times Elon took Tesla to the brink of extinction before prevailing en route to becoming the wealthiest person in the world. All three of these individuals also offer . For Jobs, it was (initially) making computers so accessible and easy to use, that you’d welcome them in your home. For Musk, it was the electric car. compelling visions accompanied by convincing breakthroughs And with Sam Altman, it’s clear his moonshot vision - an effort that he has proved capable of leading - is artificial intelligence. Talk is cheap, and many have been drawn in by charismatic visionary types before, but in each of these cases, these people executed. That’s a big box to check off. More than anything, the Jobs and Musk demonstrated throughout their careers, across multiple efforts and companies, is the kind of conviction that people admire. focus and tenacity It’s easy to look at Musk and wonder why he maintains (a material level of) involvement in Tesla, SpaceX, Boring Company, SolarCity, and others, the answer is meaningful: these are the companies and components necessary to realize Musk’s ultimate vision, for humans to become an extra-planetary species. (And interestingly, the biggest thing hurting the approval rating of Elon Musk, at the moment, is attached to the lack of focus he’s demonstrating with his involvement in Twitter. His operation of Twitter won’t help people get to Mars.) Sam Altman Has Demonstrated Resilience and Has Vision and Focus Like Musk’s (previously singular) focus on helping humans become an extra-planetary species, Altman’s focus is clear: artificial intelligence. He understands, as he described it in one interview, “the arc of technology and societal change on a long time horizon.” This has pushed Altman into new, related efforts. Among them: Recognizing the need for a stronger grid to fully realize his vision for the future of technology, Altman is the Chairman of the Board at , an advanced nuclear fission microreactor startup. As Sam Altman told , “I think there’s urgent demand for tons and tons of cheap, safe, clean energy at scale.” energy Oklo CNBC In recognition of a similar issue, Altman has pushed for a level of investment in semiconductors (and generally, ) to a previously-unheard of level. Earlier this month, it was revealed to reshape the semiconductor industry. compute power Altman has sought up to $7 trillion in investment Building the roads, bridges, and tunnels of artificial intelligence isn’t satisfactory for Altman, as he is rumored to be collaborating with Apple’s former designer Jony Ive on that will (presumably) change the form of the way users currently experience artificial intelligence. building a hardware AI device What Does This Mean for Sam Altman? In addition to the personal implications of becoming a business celebrity, Altman will need to manage the bittersweet impact of this increased attention on his professional life. His positioning has allowed (and will continue to allow) him to take shots like the one he took when floating a $7 trillion ask for investment in semiconductors. While most would be laughed off the stage, people leaned in and listened, truly considering a proposition previously unthinkable. Similarly, he’ll likely be found more credible and see the benefit of his reputation when he launches the rumored AI hardware device, more likely to avoid the skepticism than first-movers like Humane and Rabbit. He may find the attention is not all positive. When Oklo completes the process of going public via Altman’s SPAC ($ALCC), it seems an obvious candidate to become a favorite of fanboys and groups like r/WallStreetBets. While likely a good thing for the price, just ask Musk about the (potential) downsides of having so many people around the table. That may make it difficult for Altman and his crew to remain nimble, a drawback in an early-stage environment. His status as a cult hero may also make it difficult to do the things that Altman has proven, time and time again, that he loves: tinkering with technology projects in public. He may find it challenging to launch a fun Chrome extension weekend project. (Though I think he’ll manage.) I ultimately do not know if it’s healthy to treat our business leaders with mythic-like status, nor do I know what to do with or about the phenomenon other than say this: I hope the path and result are better for Sam Altman than it has been for others like him. With both Jobs and Musk, the story has been complicated, reminiscent of a line in Christopher Nolan’s 2008 Dark Knight: “You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become a villain.” With Jobs and Musk, I think it’s safe to say this has been true in each case. Here’s hoping Sam Altman can navigate his way to a third outcome, one where he can pursue his vision for the improvement of humanity, without devolving into an internet troll who releases a Cybertruck.

The literature review shows that most works are interested in text in structured languages like English, French, Arabic, etc. However, few works deal with dialects, mainly the Algerian one, which is known for its complexity and variety. To fill in the gap, we propose in this paper a complete NLP approach to detect hate speech in the Algerian dialect. We built an annotated corpus of more than 13,5K documents, which is used to evaluate various deep learning architectures. The obtained results are very promising, where the most accurate was the DzaraShield . Looking ahead, there is significant potential to enhance inference speed, particularly for the Dziribert-based and multilingual models. While this project primarily focused on Arabic characters, our next step will be to address the dialect when written in Latin characters. Embracing both Arabic and Latin characters will more accurately capture the nuances of the written Algerian dialect. Hate Speech Detection in Algerian Dialect Using Deep Learning: Conclusion,  Acknowledgments

Technology continues to grow at a very fast rate and while this continuous growth is something that should be welcomed it doesn’t come without its fair share of challenges. To most emerging tech, more focus is usually on the pros most of the time and people tend not to care much about the legality side. Take for instance driverless cars in place. Self-driving cars potentially offer incredible benefits such as increased safety and convenience, environmental sustainability, and improved traffic flow. Nevertheless, it’s no secret that tech malfunctions, often when you don’t expect it. How do self-driving cars fit in the spectrum of legality especially when accidents occur due to malfunctions? This post shall delve deep into the legal challenges and implications of autonomous vehicles like a driverless car highlighting ones such as liability, privacy, and regulation. In any case, it would be difficult to have a very profound discussion on these legal implications without properly understanding how driverless cars operate. How Do Autonomous Vehicles Work? People not aware of how autonomous vehicles work usually have misapprehensions about it. Some think it’s like driving blindfolded but this is not true. Self-driven vehicles operate through lots of information collection both from the environment and about yourself as well. They rely on a combination of sensors, cameras, and advanced algorithms to gather the information they need. Self-driving cars are also made up of a complex web of AI and machine learning algorithms, which allow the car to learn, sense situations, as well as react using pre-programmed directions whenever they encounter various driving conditions. The building blocks of autonomous vehicles include: : Various kinds of sensors, which are adapted, while implementing the driver-less vehicles are , or Lidar, radar, and cameras, for collecting data about the surroundings. The components of the self-driving cars' actuators change the final products produced from data algorithmic into physical activities such as turning the steering one way or a certain direction and also applying the brakes of the car in use. Actuators From all the above, it’s transparent that driverless cars are the future of the car industry. As such, top manufacturers including Tesla and Mercedez already have models of driverless cars. However, growth comes at a cost and it’s time to explore the legal implications of autonomous vehicles. Challenges With Regulations and Laws For Autonomous Vehicles The fact is governments all over the world are struggling to cope with technology’s pace and to figure out how to go about regulating autonomous vehicles. Already, there are some legislations in place, such as the ’s guidelines for autonomous vehicle testing and deployment. However, there are still a lot of grey areas that need to be addressed. For example, determining liability. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Liability and Insurance Considerations for Autonomous Vehicles Determining liability in the event of accidents involving self-driving is complex, to say the least. Traditional accident liability laws aim to protect the victim of the situation by shifting liability to the driver, after confirming the person who was behind the wheel. However if the driver is supposed to bear liability for the accident, who then takes the blame in accidents involving self-driving cars? Is the owner of the car liable for the damages or does liability transfer to the manufacturing company since the owner wasn’t actually driving when the accident took place? However, the reality is in situations that involve self-driving cars, the legal specifics become a whole lot more complex. The complexity involved also extends into the realm of insurance claims. However, there are no concrete laws for determining what constitutes risky or unsafe driving as far as self-driving cars are concerned. However, with autonomous vehicles becoming more and more popular, it has become more evident that there is really no proper coverage for these automobiles. Privacy Issues As mentioned earlier before, self-driving cars work by collecting massive amounts of data about their environment and the occupants in them. But then such massive data collection also raises extremely valid privacy concerns. This includes the quantifiable problems in collecting all location data - video footage and others shared with the third-party providers without consent from passengers. There is also a question concerning the assumption of responsibility for possible leakage of some data as a result of cyber attacks on the servers of manufacturers, operators or third parties related to those who manufacture self-driving cars. Passengers should have control over such information and the potential ability not to let it be collected at all. This is important to note as drafting and enforcement of legislature inclined to self-driving car technology raises several ethical issues. For instance, who does the vehicle decide to value in terms of safety more when there is deliberation involving an accident that cannot be evaded? Should it prioritize the safety of its passengers, that of the other car's passengers, or foot passengers? This has raised the question as to whether ethical self-driving algorithms can be developed. Moving Forward There’s no doubt that their full integration is the next stage for the automobile industry. However, there are very real legal challenges that still need to be solved and loopholes to be closed. Current legal ambiguities regarding areas like liability determination, privacy regulation, and ethical considerations still require a lot of legal clarifications before full integration becomes a reality.
