You’ve probably heard that Generative AI has demonstrated the potential to disrupt a huge number of industries and jobs — and web3 is no exception. But how well can ChatGPT create smart contracts? Can using ChatGPT to code smart contracts make you a 10x developer? In this article, we’ll try it out and see. We’ll walk through writing and deploying an Ethereum smart contract using , , and … and we will ask ChatGPT for instructions on how to do everything from the code to the deployment. MetaMask Infura Truffle The goal is to see if we can break down the task of creating a smart contract into a set of simple prompts. Ideally, ChatGPT can parse those prompts and give good (and accurate) answers to them, making us a faster, and better, developer. Let’s see what we can do! A Note on Accuracy ChatGPT is a Large Language Model (LLM) extremely proficient in explaining blockchain concepts, providing advice, and even generating code snippets related to web3 development. However, keep in mind that some of the code or answers it generates may be partially or completely incorrect. Access to ChatGPT does not remove the need to know the basics of blockchain development. However, even a beginner can use artificial intelligence to dramatically increase productivity. The second point to note is that the free, public version of ChatGPT isn’t very aware of events, updates, and practices that have emerged after 2021. This can be an issue in a field such as web3 development, where everything is improving and changing at a breakneck pace. However, it is possible to get good answers if something that you’re asking is fundamental and has been stable over the years (for instance, Truffle and Solidity). Create an Escrow Contract with Truffle and ChatGPT To see what ChatGPT can do, we’re going to ask it to create an escrow smart contract that allows a buyer and a seller to exchange money, and we’ll have ChatGPT establish an arbiter to resolve disputes. Let’s see what Generative AI can do! Step 1: Install MetaMask First we need to set up a wallet. We’ll use wallet — the most popular Ethereum option — and add the Sepolia test network. MetaMask is secure and easy to use. MetaMask You can download the MetaMask extension for your browser . Then, just install and set up the wallet. You’ll be given a “secret phrase” — keep this private and safe! Let’s next install the OpenZeppelin contracts package. Next we have to allow MetaMask and Truffle to work together. We need Truffle to be able to sign transactions, pay gas, etc. For this we’ll use . Let’s use the following prompt in ChatGPT. `As an expert smart contract developer, create a smart contract using Solidity that implements an escrow. There will be three parties: the buyer, the seller, and the arbiter. The constructor will set the buyer, seller, and arbiter. It will also set the value which will be equal to the amount sent to the constructor. There will be two functions. The first function allows the buyer or the arbiter to release funds to the seller. The second function allows the buyer or the arbiter to refund the amount back to the buyer. Implement any other functions that you may think are relevant.` Note the “As an expert smart contract developer” beginning of the prompt. This type of “role playing” with ChatGPT works very well. Now ChatGPT will generate a unique response for you. And this response will change every time. So you may not get the same output that is shown below, but it should be something similar. Note that this is a very basic implementation of an escrow contract and should not be used in production without thorough testing and auditing. Also, there may be additional features that you may want to add to suit your specific use case. Upon inspection, the snippet provided by ChatGPT is pretty good! But it does have an error—the constructor is not marked even though we’re accessing and expecting Ether to be sent to it. payable msg.value Again, an important note: Never expect ChatGPT to give you code that is 100% correct. More often than not, you will have to make small corrections like we did here. Also notice that ChatGPT uses an earlier version of Solidity, and it uses a practice of fund transfer that is not considered best practice anymore. In this script, the address that deploys the contract will be set as the buyer.

It gets the naming wrong (we want it to be prefixed with 1_ and not 2_) and makes a minor mistake in setting the arguments of the function. deploy Let’s create a new file in the folder. Tips and Tricks Here are a few tips and tricks for using ChatGPT when coding: ChatGPT has limited knowledge and has a knowledge-base cutoff of September 2021. So some of those best practices and latest developments in smart contracts are going to be missing from its knowledge. There are several versions of ChatGPT. GPT-4 tends to give better answers, but is a paid service. GPT-3.5 (which we used here) is free, and does pretty well. Make your questions as specific as possible. Don’t stop with writing code. ChatGTP can debug your code, audit it, document it, make it pretty, analyze it, find vulnerabilities, and more. Conclusion ChatGPT was an extremely useful co-developer. But it wasn’t perfect. I wouldn’t use it to create unmodified code that I pushed to mainnet—especially if I was a newdeveloper. But as a coding partner, and as a place to start, it was helpful. It saved me significant time and created surprisingly good code. In the hands of an experienced developer, I believe it can increase productivity by many times. I plan on using it quite heavily on future projects, alongside MetaMask, Infura, and Truffle. Have a really great day!

2021 - One Year in EOS

Cryptocurrency aims to make money and payments accessible to everyone globally, no matter where they are located. The Decentralized Finance (DeFi) movement helps in taking a step towards that goal by creating an open, global alternative to the financial services that are in use today to anyone with a smartphone and an internet connection. In simpler terms, DeFi is an ecosystem of financial applications built on blockchain networks. DeFi aims to create an open-source and transparent financial system available to everyone and operates without any overriding central authority. Users of this system would've complete control over their assets. Interaction with the ecosystem would be through peer-to-peer (P2P) and decentralized apps (dapps). The core benefit of DeFi has already been mentioned, which is easy access to financial systems. This is hugely beneficial for people isolated from the financial system. A lot has been written about DeFi and the advantages and disadvantages of this ecosystem. According to DappReview, most of the transactions that take place on the Ethereum network are from the DeFi ecosystem. However, today we will look at the projects on DeFi outside of the Ethereum network, platforms like EOS, Tron, Algorand, etc. We will not analyze technical details, protocols or blockchain architecture. Instead, we take a closer look at Ethereum competitors and understand the global situation of the decentralized finance market. Why did platforms like EOS and Tron not become “Ethereum Killers” EOS is Ethereums’ closest competitor when it comes to becoming a leader in smart contracts and DeFi applications. Projects like DeFiBox, backed and launched by Newdex, have been gaining considerable momentum among DeFi projects on EOS since being launched. However, some feel that the high-profile start and the hype may not be justified as many developers have left the platform. EOS's bandwidth has decreased due to network spam that has been associated with EIDOS token mining. Data from Defiprime shows that 22 out of the 214 projects on the portal work on EOS. A more detailed look shows only four DeFi applications with a fair number of users based on an EOS blockchain. These applications are Vigor Protocol, Equilibrium, EOS Microloan, and Chintai. Over the past year, TRON has released more than two billion USDT stablecoin tokens (TRC-20 standard) on its blockchain. These are the most sought after stablecoin tokens. TRON provided the ability to conduct free USDT TRC-20 transfers, which received considerable positive feedback from users. The founder, Justin Sun, aims to shape TRON to service one of the blockchain industry's leading sectors. If you look at the sources that have been provided by DappRadar, three significant DeFi applications exist on the TRON blockchain. These are Oikos, a synthetic assets platform similar to Ethereum’s Synthetix analog, Zethyr Finance. This is the first blockchain on the TRON platform that allows you to take out TRX and other popular TRC-20 token based loans. The third DeFi application is Justin Sun’s own creation, the JUST platform. The JUST platform has been announced as the latest decentralized financial ecosystem providing stable lending and management mechanisms for users. A JUST tokens IEO was recently held on Poloniex exchange, which is controlled by Justin Sun. What about Kava? Kava is a cross-chain platform for decentralized finance. It is built on the Cosmos SDK working with the Tendermint-based Proof-of-Stake (PoS) consensus mechanism. Although it works similarly to MakerDAO, it utilizes Cosmos zones to add cryptocurrencies running on independent networks. Kava aims to become the default DeFi platform, providing stablecoins and decentralized lending against major cryptocurrency assets. Kava relies on two tokens - KAVA, its governance token, and USDX, a stablecoin. The platform has three primary use cases. Users can Kava’s stablecoin USDX. By locking collateral in a smart contract, users can stake USDX for yield. Users can take out a series of collateralized loans, creating synthetic leverage for any supported crypto asset. Kava's project's oddity or peculiarity is the interaction with collateral assets from other blockchains, one of which was BNB. Due to this, several BNB holders now have the means to use it as a collateral asset in the DeFi ecosystem, which was previously impossible. Cosmos SDK also has support for Binance Chain. This helps in simplifying the co-integration of BNB and Kava. Kava labs have promised to add XRP, ATOM, and BTC as collateral assets. Algorand joins the DeFi Momentum Algorand has also joined the race by unveiling smart contract capabilities aimed at attracting DeFi projects away from its larger and more well-established competitors. In the latest upgrade to the Algorand network, the project has its sights set firmly on the DeFi space. Algorand’s head of product, Paul Riegle, emphasized that he believes that the upgrade's three key features make it a very viable competitor in the DeFi space. Features like the “addition of stateful smart contract functionality to the base layer,” “fast catchup,” and “rekeying” will help in increasing efficiency by storing some information in user accounts, rather than in its own code, which would allow Algorand to scale faster than competing DeFi friendly chains. It remains to be seen if features like “rekeying” will make Algorand a DeFi leader. Even though Ethereum will remain as the main platform for the rapidly growing Decentralized Finance industry, some projects on the EOS blockchain can play a vital role in the field of DeFi.

Non-Ethereum Systems Race To Develop DeFi-Friendly Capabilities

We know the array methods of javascript. We used it in simple programming, right? But today we will see how to use it in real life programming. We will create a simple event management application in the react to add, update, and delete an event. I have already created an application. You guys just have to clone it and run it then we will see how to increase the performance of it by implementing array methods in it. Clone the following repository then you will have a simple event management application. Later on, step by step, we will add code in it to see how array methods will help to increase the performance. In the above GIF, you can see that the user is adding a new event. When the user adds the values and clicks on submit then this event gets added in backend but not gets reflected in our frontend. Even you can see that the user performs the delete and edit operation. The event gets edited and deleted but not gets reflected in frontend. What do you guys think? Is this a good user experience? No. This will cause a performance issue. To get the updated values we have to refresh the page every time.
