Since I started running a newsletter, Morning Brew stands as an unlimited source of inspiration. I frankly can’t imagine a better source of motivation than two college students, like myself, being daring enough to build a business giant from scratch. This newsletter-turned-media company has had a growth spurt that any entrepreneur (including myself) would dream of, regardless of industry, size, or funding. As opposed to how advertisers traditionally sell, incorrectly focusing on product features. Tip. People buy with trust and justify with logic. If the buyer feels as though you are synced up with their vision, you’re honest, and they like you. They’ll justify buying from you, even if you aren’t the cheapest / best option. Rule #3. Solve business problems and personal problems of people in the business. Remembering that the people they were selling to needed to justify their purchase to their own managers so they focused on being the choice that would make the buyers look good. They also focused on agencies that were more open to taking a risk, and they identified their ideal customer profile, and part of that profile had more of a propensity to smaller, niche outlets that accepted new ideas and a little bit of risk. Tip. Remember, even in B2B; you’re still selling to people. Remember that every person you’re selling to has personal problems they’re trying to solve in their work. They all have managers they need to make happy. Solve the problems of the people you’re selling to, and they’ll be much more likely to purchase your product. Sometimes the best way to learn something is to start with a blank slate. We Revolutionized Managing Our Life as a Couple with AI and Notion. Here’s What We Did.

If you ever wondered how to add your company’s logo to your emails, this article is for you. Today, Selzy covers everything about email avatars and their impact on business. What Is an Email Avatar, and Why Do You Need It? You might not know what email avatar is, but you’ve definitely seen one in your inbox. An email avatar is a small circle with an image that appears next to the sender’s name and address, helping recipients identify senders. It can also be called an email profile picture or an email profile logo. By default, mailbox providers assign generic nondescript avatars to new users. Usually, it’s the first letter of the sender’s name. Unlike on social media in emails, profile pictures don’t seem to be a must: even service emails from Google or Yahoo don’t have an avatar. That’s why emails that have an avatar tend to stand out more. Look at the screenshot below: Which messages did you look at first? The chances are that emails from Morning Brew and Mike Allen immediately grabbed your attention. And only then, you scanned the other two, with L and A letters instead of pictures. Email avatars aren’t just visually striking, they also bring tangible value. According to the 2023 Consumer Email Tracker report by DMA, 61% of people decide to open the email because they recognize the brand, and 39% do so because they recognize the brand logo. For senders, it means that an email avatar, especially a branded one, will likely increase open rates. Different Avatar Types Automatically Generated Avatar That’s the default option. Usually, a mailbox provider assigns a logo with the first letter of your or your brand’s name. Instead of a letter, it can be a human silhouette, but still just as nondescript. Company Logo Company logos as avatars are a solid option to promote brand recall and stand out among competitors in an inbox. This helps recipients quickly identify marketing messages from their favorite brands in a cluttered inbox. Custom Images Custom images — usually photos — help subscribers recognize you faster. An example: journalist Mike Allen uses a photo in his Axios newsletter. Interestingly, emails from Axios as a company don’t have a logo. How to Add Email Avatars for Different Mailbox Providers Adding an email avatar is a simple process, similar for different mailbox providers: go to account settings, click the email avatar, and upload or choose the picture to replace the auto-generated one. The tricky part is that avatars don’t get displayed across different mailbox providers. If you send from Outlook to Gmail, Gmail recipients won’t see an avatar you set in Outlook. If you want to send bulk emails with an ESP and have your profile picture displayed in any inbox, create a corporate email domain, and link it to each mailbox provider. Then, set a profile picture for this domain in each mailbox provider separately. Let’s explore how to add profile logos across different mailbox providers and what nuance you might need to take into account. Gmail Go to Google Workspace account settings, choose an image from your computer, and crop it. Gmail doesn’t have any requirements for image size or format. Google Workspace allows users with different addresses belonging to the same email domain to have unique profile pictures. It’s useful when you send multiple newsletters and want each newsletter to have its unique email avatar. On mobile devices, you can see email avatars in the Gmail app right in the inbox; they also appear in push notifications. On the desktop, they appear only inside opened emails. Outlook On the Outlook home page, click on the avatar at the top of the page, choose Edit profile, and add or change the profile picture in the settings. It will only show up in the mobile apps and inside opened emails on the desktop. Although Outlook is a big email provider, not many seem to use it to the fullest. The same brands and newsletters we covered earlier in the article don’t have a profile picture in Outlook. Then again, even Outlook’s support team doesn’t have one. Go to Yahoo’s main page and, depending on the platform (desktop, web app, or mobile), change the profile picture to your liking. Default Yahoo avatars are stylized letters of the sender’s name, but you can always replace them with a profile picture. Once you set a profile picture, you can’t remove it and revert to stylized letters — you can only replace it with a new one. Your email avatar will be displayed in all Yahoo services — for example, in Yahoo! News comment section. Some users can choose to not see senders’ profile pictures in their inboxes and have the profile pictures replaced with checkboxes for a more minimalistic look. Apple Mail Having your brand’s logo displayed in Apple Mail is not possible unless subscribers decide to assign it by themselves. They have to create a new contact from the email address, and then choose to add a photo to get to set up an avatar — which can be any picture. The senders won’t see them. Avatar vs BIMI One more way to add an email avatar is BIMI or Brand Indicators for Message Identification. The result will be the same —  your email profile picture will be in place — however, with BIMI, you get logos and better protection for your recipients from phishing attacks. BIMI is a method of email authentication, in addition to DKIM, DMARC, and SPF. “In addition” is the keyword — to get BIMI, you need to set up the DMARC authentication first. Between 2010 and 2014, the rates of self-harm, depression, and anxiety amongst teenage girls doubled. The same can not be said for boys in the same age range, or for women who are older. This is unusual and the cause is unknown. However, a pair of social psychologists have been studying the data from North American and UK studies and are trying to get to the bottom of it. Their conclusion; Instagram exploits the natural vulnerabilities in a developing adolescent girl. Is Self-Harm Amongst Teenage Girls On the Rise Because of Instagram?

I worked in the non-crypto VC space but at the same time, I have a startup that was providing . We started in 2019 but my own vision and view of the market were negatively impacted by the sheer amount of scam and fraud that the ICO wave has caused during those early days. P2P crypto to fiat exchange I almost completely ignored the market and thought that all coins are the same - scam lol. But still, ironically I try to maintain our exchange as I still think, crypto will dramatically change the way the global economy works in the near future with its almost instant and direct P2P payment. Recently, I have come across a few events that strongly resonated with me. I found out how behind I am in this massive/aggressive development of the industry and I know I need to catch up quickly. I’m sure there will be many out there likeminded so I decided to do some writings so that I can share my view and understanding in a non-technical way for other fellows: Bitcoin (I know we are talking about Ethereum!) Now, let’s start with Bitcoin which is by far the most popular and well-known crypto in the world, one which normally accounts for 40 to under 50% of the total market cap. There are interesting things one would need to compare the purpose and structure of Bitcoin to Ethereum to really highlight the fundamental differences between the two. Bitcoin was first designed to be a digital currency that will mainly facilitate decentralized Peer to peer payment and therefore each block of the Bitcoin blockchain has a roughly 1MB in size limit that will contain mostly payment transactional data. Bitcoin also uses Unspent Transactional Output (UTXO) as the way of storing transactional data on its block (I can go on about the UTXO in a separate post but this is important terminology, in my opinion, you can google it in the meantime). Essentially, due to its 1MB size limit, a Bitcoin block can contain around 1900 transactions, up from roughly 500 in its early days. I won’t go long into Bitcoin as of now but the main idea here is to remember, Bitcoin block is limited by storage size (1MB), consequently limiting the amount of data that can be written into a block to around 1900 transactions. And lastly, Bitcoin was designed to be a digital currency for global decentralized payment. Ethereum? Another coin? In short, yes, and that is what I thought for quite some time - what a tragedy for a guy who runs a crypto-related company. If you are just a coin trader, that’s enough. Decentralized computer infrastructure Ethereum is a global decentralized computer, or someone calls it a which I think is probably very accurate. I was honestly feeling a bit shocked when I can really visualize Ethereum as a computation infrastructure rather than just another coin as I can see how Ethereum built the fundamentals and paved the way for the very vibrant ecosystem of blockchain application today. decentralized computer infrastructure Ethereum was imagined as an evolved version of Amazon Web Services or AWS where an entire economy of new applications and products could be built on top of Ethereum Alex Lieberman, Co-Founder and Executive Chairman of Morning Brew I, amongst all the articles I read, particularly like this statement from Alex Lieberman and I think you should too. That explained quite simply the role of Ethereum. Now let’s look at how Ethereum limits its block in regards to being a computation infrastructure as opposed to the payment platform of Bitcoin. Ethereum has what is called Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) which can read the code and execute it. This is how “Smart contract” was made possible and is also the foundation of the vibrant Decentralized Application (dApp) nowadays. For starters, Ethereum does not limit its block size in bytes (storage) but rather in which is similar to your car’s fuel tank, it needs gas to perform a movement from point A to point B. I was looking at gas almost every day for the past 2-3 years and always thought it was just another crypto gimmick, junky fancy word lol. How shameful! gas As a computer (Turing-completed), the service Ethereum was offering is computation capability, and therefore it charges fees based on the amount of computation effort it has to make in order to deliver the result. Without diving into details, Ethereum has a menu where it quotes different gas prices for different operations that the computer will have to do such as writing, updating, storage, etc. For me, personally, as a relative newbie, I found this combination of blocksize limit in gas and fee structure imposed by Ethereum very important in the sense that it is driving the developer community to produce lean/clean code and this, in turn, will drive the quality of projects. Another aspect of this is it also prevents the network from being attacked such as DDOS where malicious actors will produce several thousands of code execution that will congest the network. Having a fee and computation limit makes sure it is economically almost inviable to do such harmful activities to the network. Now since we already mention gas and fee, let me just continue a little bit further on how the fee you normally pay works out and why it fluctuates. The simple math Payment (in ETH) = Gas limit (in gas) x Gas price (in Gwei which is one billionth of 1 Ethereum) Gas limit & structure Think of taxi service, In order to move from point A to point B, there is mileage per distance of travel. This milage per distance is normally fixed for every car, let’s say 10 liters of fuel for every 100km and this is the Gas in Ethereum. Now if you just go non-stop to B, there is no surcharge. This is essentially a basic transaction in Ethereum pricing (an Eth transfer cost 21,000 gas) If you must make a stop halfway, the driver will charge you some additional money because the car will still need to be on and fuel keeps being spent while idled. This is essentially another gas cost in Ethereum where the system will charge you for any additional operation/computation/task. The above is a super simplified explanation of the gas structure in Ethereum computer. Whatever you do, never go beyond 15,000,000 gas; similarly, in the taxi example above, the driver will not go beyond 100km due to the taxi’s fuel tank limit. As a user, you will need to set the gas limit and make sure this limit is higher than the actual gas that will be consumed by the system. Don’t worry, if you buffer too much, the surplus gas will be returned to you. However, along the way, if the gas is not sufficient, the transaction will be reverted and the gas spent is not returning. Remember gas limit is always quoted in gas, the more complicated the transaction, the more gas will be required. Gwei Gwei is, first of all, giga-wei or 1,000,000,000wei (and 1,000,000,000gwei = 1 ETH). In the taxi example, gwei essentially refers to the price of one liter of fuel. There is just this difference that normally fuel price is fixed for a period but, in Ethereum, you are the one to offer a gwei number (to the miners). The higher you offer, the more likely your transaction will get through FAST. This is because miners will prioritize transactions with higher fees as this directly impacts their earnings. Simple economy right? On to the above screenshot of a simple USDT ERC20 transfer screenshot that I took from Etherscan. Even though it is a simple ERC20 token transfer but in line 2, you will see the transaction has to interact with the USDT Contract which incurs extra gas. In this transaction, the user sets out gas limit at 200,000 and the actual gas consumed is 46,097; he/she will only pay this amount of gas. Gas price was offered at 65.5gwei; if you take 65.5gwei and multiply by 46,097gas, you will have this number: 0.003019ETH (Remember 1 ETH = 1,000,000,000gwei) and then multiply with ETH’s price at the time, you will have USD10.89 equivalent in dollar term. Whether you’re selling your audience something or getting them to opt-in through email, you now have the ability to market to them time and time again. Which is what allows you to close this loop. What Eddie does here is use the people who have opted in in the past to engage with his next social promotion. This helps that social post get more likes and more reach. Which increases visibility and his rented audience. Which then feeds into his owned audience. How does he do that? Through an email promotion. Closing the circle with an email promotion The problem with social algorithms is you can follow someone and NEVER see the posts they share. If I wasn’t on Eddie’s email list, I likely would have missed the LinkedIn promo of Bencivenga Bullets. Eddie increases the chance everyone in his audience can help pump the views of his social post by emailing everyone. He uses the same copy in the email as in the social post. And he asks people to take the same action - leave a like and comment #marketing. If we imagine that Eddie gets the for his emails and he sends it to 19,000 people, we could say that he gets… average engagement rates Honestly, I’d bet Eddie’s engagement metrics are at least 2X the above averages. But, even if he only gets the average, he’s getting almost 500 people who like and trust what he has to say to his LinkedIn post. And if even 10% of those people engage with a simple 👍, that’s going to show the algorithm this is valuable and that it should be shown to more people. And just like that, the cycle begins again. That post gets incredible reach. It drives more people to his website. They become his owned audience. He asks them to pump his next social post which does X% better than last time.
