I thought crypto could benefit from a more general, simpler discussion of the technology, its potential, and the trends surrounding the space. Not only was it the kind of information I wanted, but I also didn’t see anybody else providing it. Still don’t, though that’s changed a bit over the past few years. Crypto is crazy, complicated, and sometimes overwhelming - but it doesn’t have to be. I found more people interested in the markets and the movement of the markets. My content presented an alternative to the content you usually find on Twitter and YouTube. 2. Tell us more about the things you create / write / manage / build! I mostly focus on the newsletter. It’s market analysis but aimed at the big picture, macro trends that frame the decisions people make when deciding how to spend their time, money, and emotional energy. As part of that, I have . Do you like it? In my past life, I worked in Congressional politics and lobbying. I soon discovered I hated politics and wasn’t very good at it, so I took a job as a civil servant with the federal government and still work that job today. I work on the books, newsletter, and articles from 10p - 2a. At some point, I would like to work on my newsletter and related business opportunities full-time. I spent the last four years learning about crypto and the past 12 years learning how to invest and build a financial portfolio. Now I get to share that knowledge and perspective with people who appreciate it. 4. What tech are you most excited or passionate about right now and why? I’m most excited about Web 3.0, a new vision of the internet where creators control their works and the distribution of those works. Our legacy institutions aggregate human ingenuity and expression in return for distribution. Ideas and innovations pass through various levels of gatekeepers and patrons before they can reach an audience at scale. With Web 3.0, you can eliminate those institutions, gatekeepers, and patrons. NFTs secure your rights, blockchains ensure everybody can connect with your creations, DeFi lets you tap into deep pools of capital, and cryptocurrency gives you a way to monetize your labor. To paraphrase Kanye, in the legacy system, “a white man get paid off of all of that.” With Web 3.0, “all of that” stays between you and those who benefit from your work. 5. What tech are you most worried about right now and why? Quantum anything. Call me in 20 years, I may change my mind. 6. If we gave you 10 million dollars to invest in something today, what would you invest in and why? I would buy USD stablecoins on until the crypto market gives me a good opportunity to buy again. Half of the Internet thinks Bitcoin’s price peaked in March and will spend the next few years in a bear market. The other half thinks March’s new all-time high marked a waypoint on the journey to $300,000 by the end of 2025. Does that make Bitcoin a good investment? Yes, but not as good as it was in 2023. It’s all relative Bitcoin’s price is up almost 330% since November 2022. In the long term, you’re still probably getting the best risk/reward for any asset you or I can easily buy: a CAGR of 35% plus massive tailwinds, buy-in from Wall Street, and a massive network of users. But “good” is a relative term. It’s trading near its previous all-time high. That’s normally not where you find value or bargains. Bitcoin always has big downturns that give you great buying opportunities, such as 2022 or 2023. If you wait for those big downturns, it’s a no-brainer. Today, I’d exercise some caution and keep your expectations in check. Under the best, most optimistic scenarios that fit historical benchmarks, you might get a return of 150% over the next few years. That’s still really good, but probably not what you have in mind. Certainly not what other people are telling you to expect. Know your realistic limits I’d refer to this chart, which gives you a range of realistic outcomes. The top two lines should serve as the upper limit of the next major “peak” within a larger upward trend. The highest is roughly $100,000 as of today. The next-highest sits at roughly $85,000. Which of those top lines will Bitcoin’s price reach? I don’t know. Both lines will keep rising, but not so much that you need to get super-excited. At the same time, Bitcoin’s price is closer to the upper bands than any “low” price. Not as much room to go up. Would you be sad with a 20% annualized gain for the foreseeable future? That’s a lackluster return for Bitcoin, but it’s still better than most other assets. (Don’t pull the old, “just because it did it before doesn’t mean it’ll do it again.” That’s correct, but it doesn’t stop you from buying gold, silver, stocks, and bonds. Why should it stop you from buying crypto?) Risk and reward Keep it simple. As prices go lower, you get more upside. People look back on 2022 as a year of disaster for cryptocurrency, while viewing 2023 as a year of rebirth. Yet, if you bought crypto on any random day in 2022 and put cash into a money market fund for 5% in 2023, you came out ahead of everybody who put cash into a money market fund for 3% in 2022 and bought crypto on any random day in 2023. If I had to guess the cause of your concern or doubt, I suspect a gap between expectations and reality. On the one hand, on-chain and technical data created the impression that we should’ve had a bigger drop-off than we’ve gotten since March’s boom to $74,000. At that time, we reached near-extremes on many metrics. With such a strong rise, you would expect a bigger fall than the 25% drop we saw this summer. On the other hand, the mania of early 2024 created the impression that this market would go much higher, much more quickly than it has. Our recent price action has shattered that consensus. Because nobody’s getting what they expected, everybody’s on edge. Let’s keep it simple. Bitcoin’s still a good investment, just not as good as it used to be. Is Bitcoin still a good investment in 2024?

Even after the recent pump, Bitcoin’s price has reached bearish milestones on trading charts and on-chain metrics. Scary stuff. Does that mean it will drop to $30,000 by July 31, 2024? No. It will probably never drop that low. As part of the chart I provide my newsletter followers, I have a black zone that’s a derivative of the Mayer Multiple, a popular metric for assessing how “hot” Bitcoin’s price gets. For the sake of space and readability, I won’t display the entirety of Bitcoin’s history, but you can see the last seven years or so below and use your imagination for the previous seven. Bitcoin’s price has never dropped below the bottom of the black band, even at its lowest depths. Today, the bottom of that band is about $28,000. By the end of the month, it should be about $30,000. If you’re betting on a $30,000 bitcoin, you’re betting on something that has never happened. Or, to think about it differently, if you’re betting on a $30,000 Bitcoin, what could make that price realistic now, when it hasn’t been realistic for 15 years? Will Bitcoin Drop to $30,000 by the End of This Month? 

The $1 trillion question: what will happen to Bitcoin’s price after halving? If history is our guide, not much. What did Bitcoin’s price do after the three previous halving events? In 2012, bitcoin’s price languished for more than a month. In 2016, its price dropped and took four months to get back to even. In 2020, its price stayed flat for two months. See for yourself: Don’t be surprised if we get a similar outcome this time. Typical operation To summarize a far more nuanced, complicated story: In 2024, we caught a massive bid. This round of speculative enthusiasm pushed Bitcoin’s price to a new all-time high. The market found itself overextended in a way we’ve never seen heading into a halving event. Today, there’s no reason to think this market can’t go a little higher for a little longer, simply on the momentum it’s built up for months. Stepping back from the day-to-day commotion, we’re still at extremes on many market metrics. I have shared the reasons in my newsletter. Crypto is Easy It all makes sense and fits historical patterns. I guess we’ll see whether these bids keep pouring in at the pace we’ve seen in the past two months. Otherwise, we could have a bumpy road ahead. But Mark, the ETFs! Those Wall Street ETFs have taken in $12 billion in new inflows. While that is a substantial accomplishment and certainly helpful, it can’t count for the $650 billion rise in Bitcoin’s market cap — even if you give the ETFs a generous multiplier effect. Anyway, how sure are you that Aunt Sally, Uncle Morton, and the pickleball crew haven’t already gotten their 1–3% allocation? If that’s the case, they have no reason to put more money into the ETFs. One less point: ETFs let people buy . So far, we’ve seen a lot of buying and not a lot of selling. and sell What happens when that changes? In recent weeks, net inflows have crashed. Some days, they’re negative. See for yourself, from : Farside Investors UK Is the trend starting to shift, or is it no big deal? We’ll see. Mark, do you mean Bitcoin’s price will never go up? On the contrary, its price will do just fine. The halving will cut new issuance in half — equivalent to roughly $11 billion per year at today’s prices. That’s almost $1 billion less selling pressure on the market each month (more as the price goes up) and as much as the Wall Street ETFs brought in this year. While $1 billion each month is not a lot for an asset as large as Bitcoin, it’s enough to make a difference. And, unlike those ETFs, those Bitcoins are off the market forever. He figured out how to make money off of it. In this case, people paid for his sneakers with crypto. We can’t ban it anymore. But that’s not all! Remember his NFTs? Or his personal bag of Ethereum that he picked up last year? If money wasn't enough to get him on the bandwagon, now he can get votes, too. Whether he realizes it or not, Vivek’s people and single-issue voters aren’t exactly simpatico with Biden’s crypto policy. He’s not the first politician to change his mind in exchange for votes and money. It’s not about you Before you start running away with images of Trump tearing down the evil banksters and liberal Wall Street sycophants when he gets into office, remember: he’s one of the biggest beneficiaries of that very system you’re trying to replace. You can say the same for everybody who holds financial power in the US. The US has the most advanced, robust, and sophisticated financial system on earth. It’s so advanced, robust, and sophisticated that its government, businesses, and citizens spend many billions of dollars each year on regulators, courts, lawyers, compliance departments, clearinghouses, accountants, settlement companies, brokers, traders, power companies, cybersecurity experts, and a whole legal and regulatory apparatus designed to keep this system from collapsing. That’s a lot of time and effort, but it pays off. Stable markets and access to capital are true luxuries. What about the billions of people outside the US who don’t have access to this system? In some places, the quality is as good or better than anything they’d get in the US. In other places, it’s almost non-existent. Often, it’s somewhere in between, leading many to seek a better way to build wealth, do business, and manage finances. Cryptocurrency has filled some of these needs with USD stablecoins, DeFi protocols, private money, and other goods and services that run on crypto protocols. Investors (like us) have grown our wealth with tokens and rewards from those crypto protocols. Now, it’s Wall Street’s turn, starting with bitcoin ETFs. It’s only a scam when they can’t sell it Wall Street firms can’t make money off of a decentralized, permissionless, anti-fragile money system that funds itself and is accessible to everybody. They run a totally different business model. They charge people for access to financial opportunities. Crypto gives people those opportunities for free. Their solution? Wrap crypto in a “safe, easy, regulated” product and sell it to people who don’t want to take five minutes to open a Coinbase account. When did Fidelity put a Bitcoin allocation into its “All In One” passive investment portfolios? it launched its ETF. After According to Fidelity, Bitcoin was not worth putting into your portfolio before January 10, 2024. Since then, it’s a must—you need to keep 1-3% in its bitcoin fund (for a small fee). Why let Greyscale or some other Bitcoin fund get a cut of their clients’ money when they can take that cut for themselves? Nobody needs a Bitcoin ETF, but until crypto developers and entrepreneurs figure out how to fund a Bitcoin wallet with one click or deliver easy, trustworthy solutions for pension funds and retirement accounts, ETFs will serve a purpose. Nothing beats the convenience of telling your broker to buy or tapping the “trade” button on your account dashboard. Once crypto developers create interfaces and platforms that offer a material advantage over the legacy financial system, ETFs will fade into obsolescence. We’re a long way from that! Cryptocurrency: Only a Scam When You Can’t Make Money Off of It

Cryptocurrency is a wild ride—a thrilling rollercoaster of highs and lows, with shocking surges followed by stomach-churning crashes. Bitcoin’s price is $52,000 as of this post! YouTube, Twitter, and Reddit tell you to make money now, FAST, and cash out with massive gains. What altcoin is about to explode? What's the best narrative for 2024? Sounds great. Who paid them for that? No time to panic Guard against the temptation of buying a significant amount of cryptocurrency at current prices, especially when history has shown us that better opportunities may lie ahead. This market always has downswings of 30 to 50% once or twice each year. Sometimes, these downswings can last months. Save your money for those times. Mark, You're telling us not to buy? It's the start of a massive bull market! What? I literally just said to buy some crypto. The bull market started in November 2022. It’s ok. You never get a bad price on bitcoin. No altcoin is worth its price today, but some will go much higher in the future. I'm a firm believer in the transformative power of blockchain technology and the potential of cryptocurrencies to revolutionize finance. I am even more bullish on the investment opportunity. That's something you can't get with any other asset class. However, I also recognize the importance of timing and strategic decision-making in this volatile market. Let's take a step back and look at the bigger picture. Keep it simple Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies seem destined to reach new all-time highs any day now. It's easy to get caught up in the FOMO and feel the urge to jump on the bandwagon before prices climb even higher. Here's the thing: the crypto market is notoriously unpredictable, and what goes up must eventually come down. That's not to say that prices won't continue to rise in the short term. They very well might. There's just not that much more room to go up. That parabolic rise doesn’t have a lot of room left. Maybe 50% on bitcoin? 200% to 800% on altcoins? That’s less than you got last year and far less than you’ll get once the market settles down. Buying at current prices carries inherent risks, especially if you're investing a significant portion of your portfolio. Markets move in cycles. When you rush to buy at the booms, you risk being left holding the bag when they bust. Consider adopting a more measured approach. Wait for prices to drop. ”Consolidations” or “corrections,” as the traders say. When you do that, you position yourself to capitalize on better prices in the future. A drop to $35,000 wouldn't even break the uptrend we started in November 2022, but you’d get a lot more crypto for your money. One strategy to consider is dollar-cost averaging (DCA), where you invest a fixed amount of money at regular intervals regardless of market conditions. This reduces the risk of buying the peaks while also taking advantage of opportunities to accumulate crypto at lower prices during downturns. It's proven effective in all upward-trending markets. My plan With my plan, you’re up 850% at best, but more likely up about 110% with cash to spare. At worst, you’re even on your investment. On average, you get 30% more crypto with my plan than you get with dollar-cost averaging for the same amount that you put into the market, without trading or timing prices. The basic premise: buy low and grow. This seems backward. Traders would never buy an asset when it crashes. “Don't catch a falling knife.” Wait for a “break of resistance.” Oh well. They hit a 56% return, a phenomenal result. Henrique Centieiro & Bee Lee I did an 88% return over that same time frame. Proof? One of my newsletter subscribers did the math for me. Check his work: "All-time" starts with the date of the purchase of each altcoin. I bought a new one every two weeks. The calculation is one month old. Since then, some altcoins went up, some went down, and I assume the winners and losers evened each other out. If anything, it's probably higher today because the crypto market's higher now than on January 6, 2024, when he sent me this report. I won't ask him to update it. Not my place. It didn't feel appropriate and it's not relevant (the comparison in this article relates to 2023). Besides, close enough is good enough. When your portfolio can swing 50% up or down in any given month, you don't have to be so precise. Could've been better, could've been worse An 88% return probably sounds lackluster for crypto, but it's better than you'd have gotten for dollar cost averaging into bitcoin (54% gain on an average price of $28,800). You'd have beaten the overall market, too , with a 75% ROI based on an average market cap of $943 billion. Sounds great until you realize you would have gotten better results if you had put all your money into bitcoin on January 1, 2023. You'd have gotten a 150% gain for the year! Oh well. 88% is not bad. If you're reading this article now, you may have done better. Most people did worse. Four step process My secret? Four steps. Wait for technical and on-chain indicators to reach their bottoms, then buy. 1. Buy at the bottom of the market. You'll feel terrible when your investments keep going lower, but with these assets, you're going to get a 50% drop no matter what the market conditions are, at peaks and bottoms. You don't even need to pull up individual altcoin charts to make this point. Look at the "safest," "least volatile" altcoin, Ethereum. It sees 50% drawdowns regularly, circled below. I wanted to show you the 30% drawdowns, but they're so common they took up almost the whole chart! Smaller, "riskier" altcoins see even more volatility. If you're going to suffer that volatility, you might as well get the most upside for your troubles. Yes, prices can go 90% lower after a 90% drop, but they can do that from any price. 2. Buy more after big crashes. After the market crashes, you get less downside and more upside. You can even make money off of altcoins that died along the way. Take a look at the portfolio report. Combined, that's a 70% gain on investments that failed. You can only get those results when you "buy low." With crypto, you're playing for a few huge winners. A 100x return is hard enough! You make it twice as hard when you sell 50% after your first double. 3. Never take profits.
