I never realized how easy it was to get a username and password to an email account until my mother was hacked. Listening to her explain what happened I realized that the attack was simple enough… she logged into her google account through an email asking her to confirm her username and password. Why would she question the request? When I got access to her laptop I suspected the attack on her credentials was much larger and had migrated into her computer. She told me of unauthorized Amazon purchases while I watched random popup messages appear on her laptop. I closed her computer, told her to never log into it again, bought her an iPad, and changed all her passwords. Then we had a long talk about malicious links and random support people calling her up to ‘help’ her. I tried to understand how she got to this point of compromised accounts and discovered that it's pretty simple. Email Phishing Attack Phishing is a type of online scam where criminals impersonate legitimate organizations via email, text messages, or advertisements to steal usernames and passwords. This happens by including a link that will appear to take you to the company’s website to fill in your information — but the website is a clever fake and the information you provide goes straight to the hackers behind the scam. It went down something like this: The attacker sent a phishing email to my mother. In this case, a carefully worded document to click on a link that will log her into their Google.com account. If she didn’t respond immediately, she would be locked out of her account. My mother clicked the link and arrived at a web page that looks identical to a Google.com login page. She logged into the fake Google.com site. She sees normal Google pages and believes she successfully logged into Google.com and prevented her account from being locked. The username/password information is sent to the hacker who collects the credential data and moves to the next stage of the attack. Phishing Email A carefully crafted phishing email lacking typos or bizarre grammar is important to the success of the phishing campaign. The email she received was similar to this one with the subject line: Verify Your Google Account. Phishing Email This particular method uses two common social engineering tools used by maliscious actors: trust and urgency. Ironically a couple of days after I sent this test phishing email to myself, I saw it sitting in my inbox and opened it forgetting that I had crafted this alert for this article. Its easy to be fooled if you are distracted! How a Hacker Stole My Mother’s Login Information We are going to use Kali Linux for this walkthrough, but there are several tools available for credential harvesting. This attack is amazingly simple, I’m surprised it is so easy to implement. Getting Started From the command line launch the Social Engineering Toolkit (SET) as root. # setoolkit The Social-Engineer Toolkit is a set of tools provided by trustedsec.com for penetration testing and ethical hacking. From the main menu, select , . Option 1 Social Engineering Attacks From the Social-Engineering Attacks menu select , Option 2 Website Attack Vectors. Any connections to this port are logged to the console. Social Engineer Toolkit Credential Harvester Attack Credential Harvester Console You can test this exploit by pointing your browser to the IP address you supplied in the Harvester/Tabnapping section or by embedding this link into your carefully-crafted phishing email. http://192.168.1.183 The exploit is complete. All the hacker needs to do is wait for somebody to load the page. Casual users won’t notice the unconventional URL and Not Secure lock highlighted in red in the web browser’s location bar. Successful Credential Capture Meanwhile, the attacker waits for the following message. Completing the fake Google Account login page captures the credentials and sends them to the console of the attacker’s computer. In our example, a possible username is while her password appears to be . mom@google.com Ilikecats A little bit of trust and a believable story is all that is needed to harvest some credentials. Imagine launching this attack against several thousand email addresses? How to Protect Mom There is nothing new in preventing this type of attack. Regular everyday security practices apply: do not click on links from somebody you do not trust. If you feel the need to click the link, confirm the URL is from the same trusted source, there are no typos, and that it is not from an IP address. She loves her new iPad. Also Published Here

Simplicity, access, security, and privacy are all incredible. However, with the world still basking in the Indian summer of NFTs, if I had to choose the best thing in 2021, I would go with the value being placed in the hands of the creators and the individuals. An open system, devoid of centralised entities scooping money from the time and emotional investment of its users, allows for a fairer distribution of wealth. More creativity, more freedom, the removal of abject poverty, a decrease in illness, and crime? All with NFTS? It seems incredible, the stuff of fairy tale and unhinged rambling. But fairer distribution of wealth leads to all of those things. It accelerates growth, promotes development, it creates a fly-wheel of positivity and progression, the real evolution of society and the species. Samaan What are the biggest challenges in the way of the decentralized web? The last year has only amplified the ravaging incompetence of those in power. However, as incompetent as they are, they are not without resources, ambition, and a powerful need to keep the status quo. There is no reason why the Du Ponts or Forbes, the Facebooks, and Amazons of this world would jettison what they have made. Centralisation is entrenched in the families, companies, institutions, and philosophy of those who brought us here, they are immune to its lack of creative spark, dynamism, security, freedom and strength. They wallow in it. Comfort is the enemy of progress. People in power do not too readily give away that power. And that comfort and power is the stumbling block to a decentralised web. In that comfort there is room for one fight, and in that power, the finance to fund it. So the biggest challenge is from those who don’t want a decentralised future. Oh, and building it isn’t so easy. Blockchain technology is difficult. And only 17 people in the world really know how it works. And they have their hands full. Removing a centralised power removes the traditional ways to protect our children. parent Bullying, hate speech, tax avoidance, pornography, fraud, terrorism, and incompetence could have the potential to take root. And idiots. Idiots always try to ruin the party. But only if they are not considered now. The key is to incorporate mechanisms into the systems (I’m not suggesting I know those mechanisms. I don’t) But there is nothing you can do about idiots. How do you see the future of the decentralized internet? The future of the internet is not clearly defined. There is no singularity, no one place, time or platform which is going to define the transition. I liken the Metaverse (the Metaverse, the future internet, web 3.0, these terms are interchangeable) to the Renaissance, the 300-year period of cultural enlightenment which spread across Europe, changing the artistic, political and economic landscape, a kind of re-birth for civilisation, a new way to interpret creativity and curiosity, re-examine our collective behaviours and culture. Of course, The Renaissance wasn’t just a period of enlightenment, it was littered with religious war, suppression, chaos, and bloodshed so ruthless we can barely imagine. There was a fight, a struggle, the status quo was not so easily upsurged. There won’ be (as much) bloodshed, but there will be a power struggle. But eventually, where you were born and which part of your parent’s last will and testament had your name on it will no longer dictate the chairs of power. Whistleblower Blows Lid on the Decentralized Internet: An Interview with Mr. X

I am a Co-Founder of “CBD Company,” a licensed and certified medical marijuana grower. After much hard work in the field, I knew I needed one excellent website for our business. The best decision in my life was to make it from scratch. Advised by a friend, I met Javascript and started educating myself and gaining knowledge about programming. I suddenly felt lost when I dedicated years to my CBD 'idea' to help people worldwide with one of the best medicine out there given by nature. That happened because the more I invested money, energy, and time, the more the price of CBD dropped. The world is created that way, and we must adapt to it. Meanwhile, that made me more familiar with the programming world and primarily Javascript because I decided to chill out from the CBD industry for a little and give my energy to educating myself in another area. Managing hard working in the field every day and learning Javascript was not easy, but I must confess I loved it from the first day. One year ago, I couldn't install Node JS on Visual Studio Code for about literally 5 hours. After I had my first "console.log" after so much suffering for such an easy task, I knew it would be a long journey. The 'magic' happened after my first exam. Frankly, I have never been a good student for the simple reason I got distracted or bored too quickly. This time things were different. For the first time in my life, I had excellent results on an exam. Shocked by what happened, I gave all my energy and free time to programming. Month after month, I became more obsessed with becoming a developer. Around November, I finished the harvest and could dedicate every second of my day to practicing what I had learned till the moment and creating personal projects. Meanwhile, the only problem was that the programming world was vast, and I knew I needed to choose one exact path and stay strict in expanding my knowledge to the maximum. I divided my day into two parts - one for working on personal projects and the other for gaining knowledge about the blockchain world. Exactly at this moment, I felt lucky! How can I predict that Javascript has a connection with Blockchain? This connection was 'Solidity,’ better said - smart contracts. With JavaScript, we can actually use and control these smart contracts, acting like a bridge between our familiar web environment and the blockchain universe. It was like everything happened for a reason. Inspired by that, I became crazy about it. Start participating in communities, achieving certifications, and interacting with each other was the most exciting part so far. I forgot to mention that I was already working as a React developer, which helped me expand my algorithms skills and dig into a large codebase. Month after month, grinding more than 14 hours almost every single day, I gave all of myself to become a better developer and learn more and more. After I did a lot of web3 projects practicing my developed skills from learning the EVM, Solidity, and DeFi combined with already gained skills from the 'MERN' stack, I was wondering: NOW WHAT? Web 3.0 is not from this world. It's another planet. On that planet, everything works differently. However, I'm grateful that Twitter exists, where I can absorb a lot of quality information about this different planet by following the right people. That way, they help me to make the right decision. I don't know precisely why I connect the word 'man' with 'security.’ Definitely, it has a reason. Exactly this reason helped me find myself and understand what I truly want from this field - to become a blockchain security expert. With months I can't explain to myself how all the information blockchain-related or programming at all may be out there, open-source and completely free. Show me a better world. My hands are shaking when I am writing this. This much exciting. Or probably I just found my drug. Try it it's from the healthy one. Overview Digital fingerprinting is a technique used to identify users across different websites based on their unique device and browser characteristics. These characteristics - fingerprint parameters, can include various software, hardware (CPU, RAM, GPU, media devices - cameras, mics, speakers), location, time zone, IP, screen size/resolution, browser/OS languages, network, internet provider-related and other attributes. The combination of these parameters creates a unique identifier - fingerprint, that can be used to track a user's online activity. Fingerprints play a crucial role in online security, enabling services to identify and authenticate unique users. They also make it possible for users to trick such systems to stay anonymous online. However, if you can manipulate your fingerprints, you can run tens or hundreds or more different accounts to pretend that they are unique, authentic users. While this may sound cool, it has serious implications as it can make it possible to create an army of bots that can spread spam and fakes all over the internet, potentially resulting in fraudulent actions. Note: Obviously, I won’t discuss here how you can do "bad" things; you must always be careful, stay away from the “dark side,” and avoid committing illegal actions. This article is about the technology behind this, so use the information wisely. This is the first (and maybe not the last) article in this domain, so it will be more like an overview. The content offers an intro to the topic. There are dozens of tools and ways to detect, collect, and spoof fingerprints, and there are many different parameters and technologies that can reveal or hide your real identity or the fact that you're spoofing fingerprints (meaning you're not an authentic user). Parameters in Digital Fingerprints Let's consider some of them, some examples of obvious, simple, or well-known params, some that are rarer, less-know, and difficult to spoof. this string provides information about the user's browser, operating system, and device. User-Agent: it reveals the user's network and geo-location. Services use IP addresses for security and to prevent malicious activities. If you use one account from different IPs or many different accounts from the same IP, some services may view this activity (in combination with other params) as suspicious and use some level of bot protection against you. This can also be triggered if you use IPs that are already used or in some kind of banned list (proxies). IP: Information about installed plugins and extensions can be used to create a unique fingerprint - it helps in identifying users based on their browser's additional functionalities. Browser Plugins and Extensions: different users often have different display characteristics. Screen Resolution and Color Depth: they are important factors in fingerprinting - if you have random values, e.g., Japan timezone Norwegian language this is a bit unusual. Timezone and Language Settings: it involves rendering hidden graphics in the user's browser to gather information about the graphics hardware. Quite a tricky one because if you spoof your hardware info, then you can’t have the proper canvas value - you can’t render it on your different real hardware. Canvas: it exploits the unique capabilities and limitations of the user's graphics hardware in rendering 3D graphics - additional information about the user's device. WebGL Fingerprinting: the list of fonts installed on a user's system can be used as a fingerprinting parameter. This information is accessible through JavaScript. The list of fonts has to be realistic - so e.g. you can’t have Win fonts on macOS or you can’t have just 1 or 2 fonts, this is a very suspicious indicator. Fonts: it allows websites to determine the device's battery level and charging status, the combination of battery attributes can be used for fingerprinting. Battery status API: websites can use the web audio API to generate unique audio fingerprints by analyzing the audio processing characteristics of the device. Audio Fingerprinting: This information includes details about the software and hardware components of the device, such as the graphics card, network adapter, and operating system. This adds to the uniqueness of the fingerprint. Hardware Concurrency: This information includes details about the network connection, such as the IP address, ISP, and DNS server. Network Information: some users may use some software that listens to specific ports which also might be useful for some specific cases. Open and used ports: Navigating the Web incognito Digital fingerprint manipulation is a difficult task that demands a proactive approach to avoid detection. The are lots of strategies and tools to hide your identity (fingerprints) or pretend that you are someone else. Use privacy-focused browsers Opting for privacy-focused browsers, such as Brave, Ghostery, Tor, Octo Browser, or Vivaldi with enhanced privacy settings, provides a fundamental defense against common fingerprinting techniques. These browsers prioritize user privacy and incorporate features designed to hide your real fingerprints, making it harder to track your activities. For example, the Tor Browser, grounded in principles of anonymity, routes internet traffic through the Tor network. This strategic routing obscures the user's identity by bouncing connections through a series of volunteer-operated servers, enhancing overall online anonymity. Browser Extensions Privacy-centric browser extensions, including AdBlock, uBlock Origin, Privacy Badger, or CanvasBlocker, could be active defenses against tracking scripts, cookies, and fingerprinting attempts. These tools operate in the background, protecting and preserving user anonymity. VPN and Proxies The use of VPNs or proxy services adds an additional layer of protection by masking the user's real IPs (location, timezone, language, etc) and encrypting internet traffic. This is not only used to change your fingerprints but also to provide a more anonymous online presence and a higher security level. Motivations behind fingerprint spoofing Understanding the Whys Individuals concerned about personal privacy and the growing digital surveillance often spoof fingerprints to shield themselves from relentless online tracking. Privacy: Spoofing fingerprints prove useful for circumventing geo-restrictions, allowing users to access content restricted to specific regions. VPN and proxy services play a crucial role here by not only hiding the user's identity but also providing access to servers in different geographic locations. Geo-restriction: Avoiding targeted advertising and online profiling serves as a compelling motive for individuals to manipulate their digital fingerprints. Some tools can block 3rd-party tracking scripts and cookies, disrupting the profiling process. Ads: Web scraping, multi-accounting, e-commerce, bounty&airdrop, bonus-hunting, social networks bots, and affiliate marketing are often sources of income or bases for medium businesses. Digital agencies, individuals, and influencers engaged in these activities may require fingerprint spoofing to navigate through complicated bot detection systems. Avoiding detection becomes vital for some services, ensuring that legitimate activities are not mistakenly flagged or restricted (though quite often, such activities and accounts are not really legit but pretend to be so). Some of the most popular tools are Multilogin, X-Browser, Octo Browser, AdsPower, Incogniton, Scrapy, Surfsky, Web Scraper.io, ScrappingBee, etc. Strategic needs in the digital arena, bot detection, and protection systems: Collecting Users' Fingerprints Websites use JS (obviously) to harvest details about users to construct comprehensive digital portraits. This involves probing screen resolution, device orientation, mouse movements, keystroke dynamics, etc. Sophisticated fingerprinting scripts enumerate a wide range of browser and hardware attributes. JavaScript: Persistent cookies and data stored in local storage work to track users across sessions and platforms. Techniques include leveraging browser cookies and storing unique identifiers for user tracking. Depending on your purposes you need to know when you need an "empty" browser with unique fingerprints or when you need to trick a service showing that you have particular cookies and the same fingerprints. Cookies and local storage: The inclusion of 3rd-party scripts for analytics and advertising embeds invisible trackers often used to adjust systems behavior for a specific user based on collected fingerprints. You can use the aforementioned tools and approaches to selectively block or trick such scripts to get the needed behavior. 3rd-party scripts: Understanding Your Online Identity Panopticlick (EFF), Pixelscan, deviceinfo.me, and BrowserLeaks show your browser's fingerprint parameters such as User-Agent, canvas fingerprinting, fonts, etc. These checkers provide insights into the uniqueness and stability of your digital fingerprint across different browsing sessions.
