Yes, you read that right… it says “STOP”. First of all, I have to apologize for getting lost for 2 years and not posting anything, much less even signing into Medium! Too much going on… and lots of learning in the process! Just no public journaling… Today, I have been thinking on a new topic I am trying to learn, and it is — you guessed it! — “How to Stop Being Proactive.” I did what every other sane, self-taught, amateur human would do, and I asked Google. Guess what? Google had no answers. EVERYTHING that popped up was how to be MORE proactive. All sorts of advice on proactivity at work, in life, and even how to change from being reactive to being proactive. ** ** Insert instant overwhelm Except one — only one — by Paul Gilbert, lawyer and founder of LBC Wise Counsel. It struck a cord. post from 2014 Now, don’t get me wrong. Being proactive can be good many times, and being reactive is not the answer I’m looking for here. I have actually worked really hard to change my reactive behaviors and even wrote , way back when. It is another kind of proactive I’m talking about today. a post about it Precisely, in a world where being “proactive doers” is what is expected and asked of us, it is very difficult to see where we are doing more harm than good. And what is worse, within our own lives. It’s a very confusing message. At work, and in life in general, I have always been a proactive doer…I even managed to be proactice when I was a master in reactive behavior. I made the wheels turn! I got sh*t done! That was my motto. It quickley turned into “getting the RIGHT sh*t done” a couple of months ago when I found myself doing and doing and doing, but getting nowhere…as stuck as a spinning tire in the mud. All of a sudden I feel deep compassion and empathy for hamsters… Because anybody can get wrapped up in a long to-do list of «non-important-but-urgent-fires-to-put-out», or things we agreed to do because we don’t know how to say “No”, or maybe we where just hanging out way too long with everyone’s-best-friend procrastination. Now a days, everybody and their mother assures they know the best way for you to live your life (including me). So, I have promised myself to not add to the online information clutter out of pure opinionated ego, and only post things that I really consider to be useful to other human beings out there. Here goes. Technically, according to , being proactive means: vocabulary.com “If you are , you Active means “doing something.” The prefix pro- means “before.” So if you are , you are . The opposite is being reactive, or waiting for things to unfold before responding.” proactive make things happen, instead of waiting for them to happen to you. proactive ready before something happens O.K., fair enough… being proactive sounds like a great survival strategy. The perfect food for my lizzard-brain, which runs on stress and anticipation to feed it’s fight-or-flight instincts. It is what keeps me out of trouble and rescues me from it, trying to always be one step ahead. This is all nice and dandy in most work-life scenarios, and specially if I am competing in 2018’s remake of “Survivor”. But not so much in relationships and other real-life scenarios. Let me explain. When we see someone in despair (or we assume they are in despair), one tends to want to help. We put on our best shining armor and we gallop to the rescue. Yes. I’m a girl. We can wear shining armors, too. (Although femenine energy counselors advise you to stay in your feminine energy, and stop …their advice is just now starting to make sense.) doing The problem with this is nobody asked us for help. But we do it anyway! ‘Cause we know what’s best, or becuase we really really wanna help and we actually have the answer. Again, no matter how right we are (or think we are), or how much time, energy and effort we can help the other person save, the problem is… yup, you got it! Nobody asked. do Some people are kind and actually welcome our help. Other’s were truly hoping somebody would save them, or were even counting on help specifically (you awesome good friend, you). But most of the time, people prefer you mind your own business. your For starters, nobody likes a know-it-all. They also don’t like to be told what to do. They get very defensive. Specially if what you are saying implies that they might be wrong or have some internal work to do. And what people dislike the most is hearing unsolicited advice, when all they needed was a listening ear and perhaps a shoulder to cry on. Problem is, I’m a life-helper (kinda like a Santa’s Helper, but I don’t get all the free toys). Actually, I’m a SUPER DUPER life-helper. All my friends know it and they tend to come to me for help or advice. And I don’t mean this in an arrogant, entitled way. I genuinely LOVE helping people. It is my mission. And I want to share everything I learn and all the knowledge I acquire, because, for me, that’s the purpose of knowledge. Thing is, wisdom is really what we should strive for. And to become wise, you must start by learning a new concept and experimenting with it. I really, genuinely want to share all these concepts and experiments with everybody that would like to listen to them. Teaching helps me learn. Also, I process when I talk (and write… hence this post.) Some people welcome this attitude of mine. Some are scared away by it. And one in a hundred can actually get angry and burst (it’s hard to look into the mirror sometimes). And I don’t take it personal, ‘cause I understand they are protecting themselves from what they don’t want to see… and from me, apparently. I know what you’re gonna say: “Why don’t you just study to be a life coach?” It’s one of my future plans. But Life Coaches don’t necessarily give you the info you really need, nor the tough love. They asks millions of questions to help you find the answer within you. Which is actually pretty brilliant because as a coach, you don’t have to have any answers!!!!! But I tell you, I’ve learned and grown a lot more from books that told me things in my face, than from the innumerable questions I’ve been asked. I actually find the answer to those questions BECAUSE of all the in-your-face info I have read or heard. My point is, if you don’t have the knowledge/info/concept/drive or new perspective, you can lay on your psychologist’s chaise longue every Saturday for five straight years, playing victim at times, and NOTHING will click. You end up paying someone to listen to you (we’ve got friends that do that for free), and watch you become a mess, while he tries vaguley to undo you. (This may or may not have happened to me…) Now, I’m not dissmissing psychologists. I deeply respect them and the ones I have worked with have all helped me in one way or another, specially with life-changing therapies like EMDR. And that is all good to correct past issues and deal with post-traumatic stress. It’s like rewriting the algorythm in your brain, so the software can run flawlessly, and oh boy, whatta change that makes!! But really it’s the speakers, and authors, and bloggers who study and write about different life subjects in an in-your-face, tough-love style, who have helped me open my eyes and walk a step closer towards enlightment. **Shout-Out to Eric Barker, Brené Brown, Byron Katie, Esther Perel, Ruth Field, Gary John Bishop, Mark Manson, James Clear, Tony Robbins & Paul Jarvis, to name a few.** So why are we so proactive if everybody just wants us to shut up and mind our own business and let them be (because they don’t need our help, although it might really seem like they do)?!?!?! My answer: because I wanna help. Dig deeper. Peel the onion. Try again. My answer #2: because it feels good. Dig deeper. Peel the onion. Try again. My answer #3: because I wanna be liked by others. Dig deeper. Peel the onion. Try again. My answer #4: because I want to be accepted and validated and loved. Dig deeper. Peel the onion. Try again. My answer #5: because I feel I am not enough and I have to prove myself to everyone including myself, maybe? I don’t consciously feel this way, but it is what all my in-your-face, tough-love, self-help books and gurus say, so there’s gotta be something to it. (And now I’m justifying myself, so it well may be…) Dig deeper. Peel the onion. Try again. My answer #6: because I have been hurt, rejected, neglected and abandoned so many times, that I am really trying to turn into a complete, balanced, rounded-out person, with a lot of wisdom and emotionally stable thoughts, feelings and reactions. Dig deeper. Peel the onion. Try again. My answer #7: because this is what I learned from my mother, who is a walking heart, but also a frustrated and hurt stomped-on carpet with no boundaries, bless her soul. I learned to give. Everything. Always. Even if it means taking crap from others. To be low-maintainance for others, to not bother nor be a problem (not quite the master yet with this last one… gotta learn to shut up!). I learned to not recieve. So I give! Everything. How do you tell a giver to stop giving? It is all I know. It is all I have been. It is pretty much who I am. — Here comes the tough love — Well, it turns out that when we give so much, although we are probably genuinely nice humans, this quality is really a manipulation tool. We “give” as if hoping to buy other people’s love, admiration, affection, validation, company…you fill in the blank. But what happens when you proactively help someone who has not asked for your help? That could go both ways. They can appreciate it, or they can tell you to bug-off. Or what if you give someone advice in a group chat? It will probably go something like this: Someone comments something. You dispense unsolicited advice. Some other one picks on you, or tries to put down what you said. You feel attacked, get defensive and answer back. That just makes everything worse and then you justify yourself and validate your knowledge. have to So you end up talking a lot more than you intended, and you most probably gave the other commentator enough material to continue using against you. Also, by justyfing yourself you are sending the wrong message that the other one is actually right about you — not to mention that you have also now appeared to be very insecure. Oh, and then you over compensate by trying to be funny or LOLing to all the comments of all the other chat members. (Nice cherry on top.) And that is the whole reason why I looked up “How to STOP being proactive”, in the first place. You see, I’m really trying to stop justifying and explaining myself, and for that, I have to focus on the root cause: I have to stop being proactive and dispensing unsolicited advice and explanations to everybody before they even ask! Also, being proactive and constantly justifying and explaining yourself involves wasting a lot of precious time. Yours and others’. So, proactivity is then a bit of a hassle if you wish to live harmoniously in society and not become the exiled know-it-all of the tribe. Which brings us back to our question: how do I being proactive? Paul Gilbert recommends: STOP Let them ask you if they need you. Shut up. “Who cares about your opinion? […] Stop digging where you are not needed. Treat colleagues like adults and ask simple direct questions that put them in a position to be informed and let them ask you […] if they need you.” I guess you could also ask if the person wants to hear your opinion. Or basically, ask them what role they want you to play in the conversation: listener? advisor? mentor? opinionated friend? wall? ghost? hollogram? 2. The best way to shut up — after biting your tounge — is to listen and ask questions. Active listening, they call it. Listen more. 3. You are not ment to be liked by eveyone. Stop trying to control others so they do! Stop trying to be liked. “Being liked is your weaknes. Your blind spot. Your open fly.” 4. . As today’s self-help gurus like to say, “you are a human , not a human .” (This is not a free-pass to procrastinate. It’s an invitation to manage your energetic resources and embrace yourself.) Stop DOING so much being doing 5. But, They all have their own process and timing. I think this one is self-explanatory and reinforces points 1 and 3. stop everybody’s mother! being It is sooo hard. I mean, hard! I’m doing it right now. This whole post is me expending unsolicited advice. Very opinionatedly. And if you re-read my first paragraph, I was totally justifiying myself there for not posting in 2 years. You see? IT’S HARD!!! really Where do you draw the line between psychologist-life-coach-wanna-be-life-hacker-santa’s-helper, and insecure serial justifier? How do you stop being such an unsolicited proactive doer and quit helping others (because you are overdoing it)? I guess, like with all addictions, the answer is go cold turkey and just stop. Shut up and jump to the other extreme first, so you can then find a healthy balance. Short answers. No explanations. Make lots of questions. Process by writing instead of talking (check!). In a nutshell, stop doing what is not asked of you. And like I heard (read) Carol Allen say (write) once: « (given that these people are healthy and what they want is reasonable, and that you have your boundaries correctly set in place.) When last we heard of her she was at Naples, and there was then a rumour that she was about to join her fate to that of Lord George de Bruce Carruthers, with whom pecuniary matters had lately not been going comfortably. Let us hope that the match, should it be a match, may lead to the happiness and respectability of both of them. As all the world knows, Lord and Lady Chiltern still live at Harrington Hall, and he has been considered to do very well with the Brake country. He still grumbles about Trumpeton Wood, and says that it will take a lifetime to repair the injuries done by Mr. Fothergill;—but then who ever knew a Master of Hounds who wasn't ill-treated by the owners of coverts? Of Mr. Tom Spooner it can only be said that he is still a bachelor, living with his cousin Ned, and that none of the neighbours expect to see a lady at Spoon Hall. In one winter, after the period of his misfortune, he became slack about his hunting, and there were rumours that he was carrying out that terrible threat of his as to the crusade which he would go to find a cure for his love. But his cousin took him in hand somewhat sharply, made him travel abroad during the summer, and brought him out the next season, "as fresh as paint," as the members of the Brake Hunt declared. It was known to every sportsman in the country that poor Mr. Spooner had been in love; but the affair was allowed to be a mystery, and no one ever spoke to Spooner himself upon the subject. It is probable that he now reaps no slight amount of gratification from his memory of the romance. The marriage between Gerard Maule and Adelaide Palliser was celebrated with great glory at Matching, and was mentioned in all the leading papers as an alliance in high life. When it became known to Mr. Maule, Senior, that this would be so, and that the lady would have a very considerable fortune from the old Duke, he reconciled himself to the marriage altogether, and at once gave way in that matter of Maule Abbey. Nothing he thought would be more suitable than that the young people should live at the old family place. So Maule Abbey was fitted up, and Mr. and Mrs. Maule have taken up their residence there. Under the influence of his wife he has promised to attend to his farming, and proposes to do no more than go out and see the hounds when they come into his neighbourhood. Let us hope that he may prosper. Should the farming come to a good end more will probably have been due to his wife's enterprise than to his own. The energetic father is, as all the world knows, now in pursuit of a widow with three thousand a year who has lately come out in Cavendish Square. Of poor Lord Fawn no good account can be given. To his thinking, official life had none of those drawbacks with which the fantastic feelings of Phineas Finn had invested it. He could have been happy for ever at the India Board or at the Colonial Office;—but his life was made a burden to him by the affair of the Bonteen murder. He was charged with having nearly led to the fatal catastrophe of Phineas Finn's condemnation by his erroneous evidence, and he could not bear the accusation. Then came the further affair of Mr. Emilius, and his mind gave way;—and he disappeared. Let us hope that he may return some day with renewed health, and again be of service to his country. Poetical justice reached Mr. Quintus Slide of The People's Banner. The acquittal and following glories of Phineas Finn were gall and wormwood to him; and he continued his attack upon the member for Tankerville even after it was known that he had refused office, and was about to be married to Madame Goesler. In these attacks he made allusions to Lady Laura which brought Lord Chiltern down upon him, and there was an action for libel. The paper had to pay damages and costs, and the proprietors resolved that Mr. Quintus Slide was too energetic for their purposes. He is now earning his bread in some humble capacity on the staff of The Ballot Box,—which is supposed to be the most democratic daily newspaper published in London. Mr. Slide has, however, expressed his intention of seeking his fortune in New York. Laurence Fitzgibbon certainly did himself a good turn by his obliging deference to the opinion of the Chancellor of the Exchequer. He has been in office ever since. It must be acknowledged of all our leading statesmen that gratitude for such services is their characteristic. It is said that he spends much of his eloquence in endeavouring to make his wife believe that the air of County Mayo is the sweetest in the world. Hitherto, since his marriage, this eloquence has been thrown away, for she has always been his companion through the Session in London. It is rumoured that Barrington Erle is to be made Secretary for Ireland, but his friends doubt whether the office will suit him. The marriage between Marie Goesler and our hero did not take place till October, and then they went abroad for the greater part of the winter, Phineas having received leave of absence officially from the Speaker and unofficially from his constituents. After all that he had gone through it was acknowledged that so much ease should be permitted to him. They went first to Vienna, and then back into Italy, and were unheard of by their English friends for nearly six months. In April they reappeared in London, and the house in Park Lane was opened with great . Of Phineas every one says that of all living men he has been the most fortunate. The present writer will not think so unless he shall soon turn his hand to some useful task. Those who know him best say that he will of course go into office before long. éclat Of poor Lady Laura hardly a word need be said. She lives at Saulsby the life of a recluse, and the old Earl her father is still alive. The Duke, as all the world knows, is on the very eve of success with the decimal coinage. But his hair is becoming grey, and his back is becoming bent; and men say that he will never live as long as his uncle. But then he will have done a great thing,—and his uncle did only little things. Lizaveta There was one circumstance which struck Grigory particularly, and confirmed a very unpleasant and revolting suspicion. This Lizaveta was a dwarfish creature, “not five foot within a wee bit,” as many of the pious old women said pathetically about her, after her death. Her broad, healthy, red face had a look of blank idiocy and the fixed stare in her eyes was unpleasant, in spite of their meek expression. She wandered about, summer and winter alike, barefooted, wearing nothing but a hempen smock. Her coarse, almost black hair curled like lamb’s wool, and formed a sort of huge cap on her head. It was always crusted with mud, and had leaves, bits of stick, and shavings clinging to it, as she always slept on the ground and in the dirt. Her father, a homeless, sickly drunkard, called Ilya, had lost everything and lived many years as a workman with some well‐to‐do tradespeople. Her mother had long been dead. Spiteful and diseased, Ilya used to beat Lizaveta inhumanly whenever she returned to him. But she rarely did so, for every one in the town was ready to look after her as being an idiot, and so specially dear to God. Ilya’s employers, and many others in the town, especially of the tradespeople, tried to clothe her better, and always rigged her out with high boots and sheepskin coat for the winter. But, although she allowed them to dress her up without resisting, she usually went away, preferably to the cathedral porch, and taking off all that had been given her—kerchief, sheepskin, skirt or boots—she left them there and walked away barefoot in her smock as before. It happened on one occasion that a new governor of the province, making a tour of inspection in our town, saw Lizaveta, and was wounded in his tenderest susceptibilities. And though he was told she was an idiot, he pronounced that for a young woman of twenty to wander about in nothing but a smock was a breach of the proprieties, and must not occur again. But the governor went his way, and Lizaveta was left as she was. At last her father died, which made her even more acceptable in the eyes of the religious persons of the town, as an orphan. In fact, every one seemed to like her; even the boys did not tease her, and the boys of our town, especially the schoolboys, are a mischievous set. She would walk into strange houses, and no one drove her away. Every one was kind to her and gave her something. If she were given a copper, she would take it, and at once drop it in the alms‐jug of the church or prison. If she were given a roll or bun in the market, she would hand it to the first child she met. Sometimes she would stop one of the richest ladies in the town and give it to her, and the lady would be pleased to take it. She herself never tasted anything but black bread and water. If she went into an expensive shop, where there were costly goods or money lying about, no one kept watch on her, for they knew that if she saw thousands of roubles overlooked by them, she would not have touched a farthing. She scarcely ever went to church. She slept either in the church porch or climbed over a hurdle (there are many hurdles instead of fences to this day in our town) into a kitchen garden. She used at least once a week to turn up “at home,” that is at the house of her father’s former employers, and in the winter went there every night, and slept either in the passage or the cowhouse. People were amazed that she could stand such a life, but she was accustomed to it, and, although she was so tiny, she was of a robust constitution. Some of the townspeople declared that she did all this only from pride, but that is hardly credible. She could hardly speak, and only from time to time uttered an inarticulate grunt. How could she have been proud? It happened one clear, warm, moonlight night in September (many years ago) five or six drunken revelers were returning from the club at a very late hour, according to our provincial notions. They passed through the “back‐ way,” which led between the back gardens of the houses, with hurdles on either side. This way leads out on to the bridge over the long, stinking pool which we were accustomed to call a river. Among the nettles and burdocks under the hurdle our revelers saw Lizaveta asleep. They stopped to look at her, laughing, and began jesting with unbridled licentiousness. It occurred to one young gentleman to make the whimsical inquiry whether any one could possibly look upon such an animal as a woman, and so forth.... They all pronounced with lofty repugnance that it was impossible. But Fyodor Pavlovitch, who was among them, sprang forward and declared that it was by no means impossible, and that, indeed, there was a certain piquancy about it, and so on.... It is true that at that time he was overdoing his part as a buffoon. He liked to put himself forward and entertain the company, ostensibly on equal terms, of course, though in reality he was on a servile footing with them. It was just at the time when he had received the news of his first wife’s death in Petersburg, and, with crape upon his hat, was drinking and behaving so shamelessly that even the most reckless among us were shocked at the sight of him. The revelers, of course, laughed at this unexpected opinion; and one of them even began challenging him to act upon it. The others repelled the idea even more emphatically, although still with the utmost hilarity, and at last they went on their way. Later on, Fyodor Pavlovitch swore that he had gone with them, and perhaps it was so, no one knows for certain, and no one ever knew. But five or six months later, all the town was talking, with intense and sincere indignation, of Lizaveta’s condition, and trying to find out who was the miscreant who had wronged her. Then suddenly a terrible rumor was all over the town that this miscreant was no other than Fyodor Pavlovitch. Who set the rumor going? Of that drunken band five had left the town and the only one still among us was an elderly and much respected civil councilor, the father of grown‐up daughters, who could hardly have spread the tale, even if there had been any foundation for it. But rumor pointed straight at Fyodor Pavlovitch, and persisted in pointing at him. Of course this was no great grievance to him: he would not have troubled to contradict a set of tradespeople. In those days he was proud, and did not condescend to talk except in his own circle of the officials and nobles, whom he entertained so well. At the time, Grigory stood up for his master vigorously. He provoked quarrels and altercations in defense of him and succeeded in bringing some people round to his side. “It’s the wench’s own fault,” he asserted, and the culprit was Karp, a dangerous convict, who had escaped from prison and whose name was well known to us, as he had hidden in our town. This conjecture sounded plausible, for it was remembered that Karp had been in the neighborhood just at that time in the autumn, and had robbed three people. But this affair and all the talk about it did not estrange popular sympathy from the poor idiot. She was better looked after than ever. A well‐to‐do merchant’s widow named Kondratyev arranged to take her into her house at the end of April, meaning not to let her go out until after the confinement. They kept a constant watch over her, but in spite of their vigilance she escaped on the very last day, and made her way into Fyodor Pavlovitch’s garden. How, in her condition, she managed to climb over the high, strong fence remained a mystery. Some maintained that she must have been lifted over by somebody; others hinted at something more uncanny. The most likely explanation is that it happened naturally—that Lizaveta, accustomed to clambering over hurdles to sleep in gardens, had somehow managed to climb this fence, in spite of her condition, and had leapt down, injuring herself. Grigory rushed to Marfa and sent her to Lizaveta, while he ran to fetch an old midwife who lived close by. They saved the baby, but Lizaveta died at dawn. Grigory took the baby, brought it home, and making his wife sit down, put it on her lap. “A child of God—an orphan is akin to all,” he said, “and to us above others. Our little lost one has sent us this, who has come from the devil’s son and a holy innocent. Nurse him and weep no more.” So Marfa brought up the child. He was christened Pavel, to which people were not slow in adding Fyodorovitch (son of Fyodor). Fyodor Pavlovitch did not object to any of this, and thought it amusing, though he persisted vigorously in denying his responsibility. The townspeople were pleased at his adopting the foundling. Later on, Fyodor Pavlovitch invented a surname for the child, calling him Smerdyakov, after his mother’s nickname. So this Smerdyakov became Fyodor Pavlovitch’s second servant, and was living in the lodge with Grigory and Marfa at the time our story begins. He was employed as cook. I ought to say something of this Smerdyakov, but I am ashamed of keeping my readers’ attention so long occupied with these common menials, and I will go back to my story, hoping to say more of Smerdyakov in the course of it. Sparkles, the NFT marketplace, is currently the only Dapp on the Songbird blockchain providing users with access to view, buy or sell any NFT created on the Songbird blockchain. We chose Flare Networks because after a lot of research Dad came to the conclusion that this blockchain is a really serious project aimed at long-term development. We like the team in sparkles. they helped us at the very beginning of the journey. largely thanks to them we have what we have. Narrative Resilience in Online Conflict Coverage: Insights from Twitter Analysis

The Crash That Brought the Shadow to the Light. On the morning of July 5, 2017, a gray Toyota Camry turned into the cul-de-sac of a neighborhood in Bangkok in a subdivision on the western edge of the city. A driver makes a miscalculation on a 180-degree turn and accidentally causes a collision with a front gate on a model home and real estate office. The driver exits the vehicle obviously upset about the event and needs to speak with the owner of the model house about the accident. After a significant time elapsed, Alexander Caze surfaced from his home to discuss the collision at the front gate of his home. As Alexander Caze made his way to have the conversation with the person in the vehicle, the FBI stormed the property arresting Alexander Caze aka “Alpha02” aka “Admin online” the owner of the Dark Web marketplace AlphaBay. Riches to Wretchedness. Alexander Cazes was just 25 and the CEO of EBX Technologies, a company that offered website creation services for businesses. Or at least that is what Alexandre Cazes said when someone asked about his occupation. According to Cazes’s father, Alexandre was a computer genius who started his own web design business at 17, had a high IQ, AND specialized in everything from web development to encryption services. While still a teenager, Cazes was believed to have started his first company, EBX Technologies, selling computers and helping small businesses set up their websites. His IT presence was clear to see; authorities traced Alexandre as far back as 2008, posting advice on a tech forum on how to remove a virus from a digital photo. Cazes grew up near Montreal and his family said he was a genius. In the shadows, Alexandre was the alleged mastermind of AlphaBay. According to publicly available information on AlphaBay prior to its takedown, one AlphaBay staff member claimed that it serviced over 200,000 users and 40,000 vendors. Around the time of the takedown, there were over 250,000 listings for illegal drugs and toxic chemicals on AlphaBay, and over 100,000 listings for stolen and fraudulent identification documents and access devices, counterfeit goods, malware and other computer hacking tools, firearms, and fraudulent services. Comparatively, the Silk Road dark web marketplace, which was seized by law enforcement in November 2013, had reportedly approximately 14,000 listings for illicit goods and services at the time of seizure and was the largest dark web marketplace at the time. . All Wrongdoing can be Traced to an Excessive Attachment to Material Wealth Alexander Cazes biggest vulnerability turned out to be his penchant for bragging about his newly acquired wealth and status. Alexandre Cazes claimed his worth was about $23 million US, including $12.5 million in properties and vehicles, and the rest in cash and cryptocurrencies. Cazes's assets seized by the U.S. government included $6.6 million Cdn in Bitcoin, $2.4 million in Ethereum, $622,000 in Monero, and $980,512 in Zcash. He had at least 11 bank accounts and cryptocurrency exchange accounts registered in his name or his wife's name in Thailand, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Beyond cash, Cazes had a taste for luxury vehicles, including a 2013 Lamborghini Aventador, a Porsche Panamera, a Mini Cooper, and a BMW motorcycle. He had three properties in Bangkok, and a vacation property in Phuket, Thailand. Subtle Clues That Were Not So Subtle. Alexandre Cazes lived a seemingly quiet life for more than a year with his Thai girlfriend in a middle-class neighborhood on the outskirts of Bangkok, but the flashy cars he drove stood out. All in an area where people drive pickup trucks and children tool around on plastic tricycles, and there was the nearly $1 million, metallic gray Lamborghini, a Porsche, and then the Mini Cooper for his girlfriend. Nothing except expensive cars, which were completely out of place in the neighborhood where homes cost less than $120,000. The neighbors thought Alexandre Cazes worked in the hotel business. neighbor, who asked not to be named because the case involves crime, said Cazes rarely left the house before noon. She said she got her first good look at him one day when he was outside, trying to photograph a monitor lizard that had crawled out of a deserted field nearby. “We smiled at each other, that’s it,” she said. One Whispers in the Dark That Awoke a Giant. Alexandre Cazes believed that crypto’s anonymity would protect him but just as crypto had opened new markets for the criminal world, it opened up opportunities for law enforcement. According to U.S. government documents, Cazes had an estimated net worth of around $23 million. This wealth was diversified across real estate in Thailand, Cyprus, and Antigua, luxury cars, and liquid assets such as cash and cryptocurrencies. Specifically, $12.5 million was invested in properties and vehicles. At its height, daily sales ranged between $600,000 and $800,000 across 300,000 listings for illicit goods, offered by over 40,000 vendors and viewed by some 200,000 users. Alexadre’s activity with AlphBay led to a police operation shutdown called “Bayonet”, which involved authorities in six countries including the FBI, the Dutch National Police, and the Royal Thai Police. AlphaBay’s Simple Mistakes From a Brilliant Mind. Alexandre Cazes made mistakes and one was with his personal email. Once new users joined the forums and entered their private email accounts, they were greeted with an email directly from AlphaBay welcoming them to the forums. The email address “Pimp_Alex_91@hotmail.com” was included in the header information of the AlphaBay welcome email. Searches for that email led investigators to forum posts by accounts with the same online handle Cazes used on AlphaBay, Alpha02. They eventually tracked down Cazes’ full name and LinkedIn account, which listed him as affiliated with EBX Technology, a company that investigators suspected was a front for AlphaBay. Alexandre Cazes had registered a PayPal account tied to bank accounts held in his name as well as the EBX Technologies business name using the "Pimp_Alex_91@hotmail.com" email account. Also, in 2008 a post to a French-language online tech forum "www.commentcamarche.com" by user "Alpha02" included the name "Alexandre Cazes" and the Hotmail address. The administrator of AlphaBay, notably, had used the username "Alpha02" before changing it to "Admin." To Encrypt or Not to Encrypt…That Is the Question. When the police, aided by the FBI and DEA, raided Alexandre Cazes's home, they said he was using a PC that was logged into AlphaBay as "Admin." The laptop was also found opened and unencrypted - revealing that Alexandre Cazes had been communicating with an AlphaBay data center, revealing the day-to-day operations as well as with AlphaBay users, and numerous passwords to AlphaBay servers and other infrastructure. A Tragic End And a Snake in the Grass. Alexandre Cazes was being held in a cell at Bangkok's Narcotics Suppression Bureau and, just hours before he was due to meet prosecutors for talks over his extradition to the US, was found dead of an apparent suicide. Alexandre Cazes did not run AlphaBay singlehandedly. He worked closely with a “security administrator” and second in command known as , or simply “DS” for short.
