HackerNoon Reporter: Please tell us briefly about your  background. Hi, I am  Aida. I am one the the Co-founders and CEO of Legitify. I am the business leader in team, focusing mainly on strategy, growth & business development. With over 13 years of experience across various sectors in the US, Europe and emerging markets, I bring a different perspective to the table. What's your startup called? And in a sentence or two, what does it do? Legitify is an AI-powered solution using audio-video authentication that allows customers to notarize documents online remotely from anywhere, without the hassle of visiting a notary public in person. What is the origin story? I joined Antler Stockholm STO4 Cohort as a Founder in September 2020, I met my co-founder Arko there. Having both experienced the pain points of in-person-notarization across borders, this is a problem we both felt passionate about solving. I was dealing with the issue of having to notarize a POA in another jurisdiction at the time and couldn’t travel so wasn’t able to do it due to restricted travel at the time. So the origin story is that we actually had a pain point in our hands and ended up brainstorming about the actual business after. Legitify was born! What do you love about your team, and why are you the ones to solve this problem? We have the necessary business expertise and knowledge of legal services and tech. Additionally, we have all experienced the pain points our users have and feel strongly about wanting to solve this problem. If you weren’t building your startup, what would you be doing? about building my startup. THINKING At the moment, how do you measure success? What are your core metrics? Inbound requests both on the customer side as well as supplier side (notaries). Each week we get requests about new use cases with a the need for using our solution, user insights are critical. Traction is key going forward, both on the customer and supplier side and processing transactions through our solution. What’s most exciting about your traction to date? Having customer requests to use our solution in Europe, earlier when we were still developing the solution, with zero marketing spent. Even today post-product we have accelerating requests from different jurisdictions inquiring about Legitify’s solution. What drew you to get published on HackerNoon? What do you like most about our platform? We were nominated! What advice would you give to the 21-year-old version of yourself? Look around and think what are some of the problems you would like to solve, that you are genuinely excited about, and go after them. Bitcoin is the crypto king and serves as both the spearhead and foundation for all other cryptocurrencies. Its role is to bring together all the other competitors into a single fold as part of a concerted new industry capable of generating and preserving wealth. Another role, and one which may well be much harder to fulfill compared to the technical challenge, is legitimizing its own existence. crypto As things stand, top-tier regulators have sent out mixed messages to the cryptosphere. Just last year, the ECB declared that Bitcoin is artificially and should, therefore, not be legitimized by regulators or financial companies. The central bank sees the crypto endeavor as more akin to gambling rather than investment or trading. “propped up” On the flip side, several points of note suggest that crypto is not a transitory fly-by-night fad but, rather, is a paradigm shift in finance. In 2020, US banks were legally permitted for clients. In all probability, , boost liquidity, encourage institutional investment, and finally, bring the asset from out in the cold and into the warmth of all investors’ hands. a Bitcoin ETF would democratize access to Bitcoin Investors shouldn’t celebrate just yet, though. ETF Fever: Legitimization or Bust for Bitcoin?

Let me guess. A friend just told you about a business opportunity that will “change your life forever,” right? It just takes $100 dollars to start, and you’ll make more money than you’ve ever made in your life, right? Your friend told you about Amway, didn’t they? In general, it’s best not to trust anything that sounds too good to be true. But Amway feels different, doesn’t it? How could a company with so much success be a scam? Let’s deep dive into what Amway is, how it operates, and whether or not Amway is a pyramid scheme. What is Amway? First of all, it’s important to establish that Amway is not a fake business designed to take your money. Amway is a legit company that makes billions of dollars a year and is known worldwide. The company also has an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau (although many of the reviews are from Amway members). Well, Amway is not a pyramid scheme. It utilizes multi-level marketing. Which is just as bad. What’s the Difference Between a Pyramid Scheme and Multi-level Marketing? Imagine you start a club and ask five of your friends to join. You then require each one of your friends to pay you to become a part of the club. You then encourage your five friends to recruit five more friends each and collect money from them. The cycle continues, with everyone at each level recruiting more people, siphoning money from those below them. These types of schemes are not sustainable as they rely on constant recruitment of new members and more empty promises to get people on board. As the pyramid grows, it becomes harder to find new recruits and eventually falls apart, leaving most of the people involved with nothing to show for it. Multi-level marketing is essentially the same business model, except this time, there’s an actual product involved. The sales that are earned from the products sold by the MLM keep the scheme funded, allowing it to stay afloat much longer than the typical pyramid scheme. However, the earning structure is the same. The more people you bring into the MLM, the more money you can make. This is because, usually, you will take a percentage cut off the sales of all the people you bring in, as would the people above you who brought you in. But at the end of the day, all the real money in an MLM is at the top, and by the time you join one, it’s too late to get in on the action. What makes multi-level marketing even more insidious is that it’s often a friend or family member that you trust that gets you in. How Amway Defends Itself So many people have accused Amway of being a pyramid scheme that the company had to . defend itself on its website In the lengthy blog post, Amway starts off with the truth, explaining how the company is not considered a pyramid scheme because it sells real quality products and how the company has been around forever. The blog also mentions how the company has expanded worldwide and how it makes its own products using certified organic farmlands. The blog stops telling the truth under the “How does Amway Work?” section. This section goes into detail about how IBOs can make money by selling Amway products at a markup and how bonuses are given out based on sales volume. The post completely leaves out the multi-level marketing aspects of working for the company. How Amway Really Works Amway works like every other multi-level marketing “opportunity.” In fact, many people have credited Amway as being the first MLM ever created. Here’s how it works: You have to pay Amway $100 to join. Sounds like a small price to pay, and it’s not a big deal for such a “great opportunity.” You then become an , and you’re told to promote Amway products to every friend and family member you have. Independent Business Owner (IBO) You’re told that you can make even more money enlisting your friends and family members in your “downline.” As an IBO, Amway will force you to replace all of your normal cleaning and beauty products with Amway products. Amway’s products are usually much more expensive, and if you don’t buy enough per month, you get kicked out of the club. The people in your “upline” make you buy expensive “Business Support Materials (BSMs)” to help you develop a “better business mindset.” This process continues infinitum￼ until you run out of money or become one of the few people who actually make a few bucks. Is Amway A Cult? The question isn’t as silly as it may sound. Many ex-Amway members have stated that they felt like they were surrounded by cult members at meetings, brainwashing them with pro-Amway lingo and propaganda. have posted online about the most common cult tactics used within these groups. Some former Amway members Some of these common cult tactics include isolating you from friends, family, and others who might talk you out of sticking with the company. Amway members may also present a future in the company as a way of “saving” you from getting a real job, and Amway meetings are often in the middle of the night, which may be an attempt to keep you sleep-deprived, another common cult tactic. Amway tends to target the same type of people that cults do: Depressed people who want to feel better about themselves as fast as possible. Lonely people, looking for friends. Bored people who need something to do. Opened-minded college students without the experience to recognize red flags. People who feel spiritually unfulfilled. To be fair, there’s no proof that Amway is telling its members to act like a cult. The cult-like feel is most likely due to the environment fostered by some of the key members of the organization that trickles down to the rest of its members. Basically, the members in the “downline” are just  mirroring the cult-like tactics in their “uplines.” How Much Money Can You Make With Amway? So, how much money can you actually make with Amway? First, take a quick look at how Amway structures its “achievement levels.” Don’t feel bad if none of that made sense. The whole system is designed to confuse you, so you don’t understand how badly you’re being worked over. Basically, if you’re at the top of this strange S-shaped system, you’re making a good amount of money with the company. The top 1% of IBOs make around $80,000 per year. If you’re anywhere in the middle of the list or below, you’ll be lucky to make more than two hundred dollars a month. That’s the number that Amway itself while while making their way up the ladder. At least the company is being honest, I guess. tells its IBOs to expect Many IBOs spend more money on the Amway products they’re forced to buy every month than making money in their downline. Actual Amway Testimonials If you talk with an Amway member in person, they’ll swear up and down that starting your own business with the company is both fun and lucrative. However, it’s rare to find people online who would say the same. Final Thoughts: Amway Isn’t a Pyramid Scheme, but it Can be Just as Bad Yes, it’s possible for you to make money with Amway if you manage to outperform your peers and land in the top 1%. The odds of that happening, however, are so low it’s really not worth trying. No, Amway is not a pyramid scheme, and it does sell actual products. But when it comes to using Amway as a way to supplement your income, it’s just another scam. Amway’s not the only scam to look out for on the internet. I'd like to share my experiences using evilginx2 and gophish for red teaming phishing simulations. While there are numerous guides available, I aim to highlight the nuances and practical insights that aren't typically covered in documentation and tutorials. Approaches When setting up a phishing campaign for red team purposes, you have three options: you can clone the page and only collect data

The last and most sophisticated method involves a man-in-the-middle attack, where your page is a proxy between the victim and the legitimate site. Evilginx2 The third method is done by evilginx2, which, despite its name, does not have nginx built in, but the functionality is the same, except that evilginx2 has built-in filters and functions like inject_js that make the attacker's life more comfortable. Gophish Gophish is a tool that allows you to manage groups and users, dynamically create emails, and send them at will. Integration A few weeks ago, Evilginx got an update 3.3, which introduced integration with Gophish, a framework for phishing campaigns. There have been several such projects in the past, such as gophish[1], but in this text, I will focus on the official evilginx by K. Gretzky. More info about the update with the demo can be found here: https://breakdev.org/evilginx-3-3-go-phish/ Both tools are in Golang, which is a relatively easy-to-understand language. Experience with Evilginx2 Malicious proxy with evilginx has several drawbacks compared to just cloning the page. Firstly, the setup is much more complicated. When you clone a page, you download the necessary files via developer tools and add the password-storing feature via some backend. Evilginx setup is more complicated. Setup needs a configuration file and a phishlet that works as a template for the phishing proxy. Setting up and running evilginx2 in the production version took me over a week compared to just cloning. The advantage is that evilginx scales much better. Once you know how to create them, you can change phishing scenarios at will because adding new phishlet is trivial. I should mention the state of the project in which evilginx is. The documentation is concise and not very useful if you have no experience with evilginx2 already. Some features and behaviors are not documented, and you need to read and debug the source code to find the behavior. The project has special financing where you can pay 400$ for a course of excellent quality, but it replaces the documentation to some extent, which doesn't seem like a good way. Either it's an open-source project with all the parts, or it's not open-source; this way, it's open-code, but you are forced into buying the expensive course. It doesn't help that the project has many open issues and bugs that nobody addresses. If you're serious about phishing, you'll probably have to edit the source code and use your version because the author doesn't put much effort into finding new PRs. For example, the PR request I made to fix the POST of a GET request three weeks[2] ago has still not been merged. The project is plagued by old libraries that are long unused. Of course, I don't want the author to handle everything himself, but sometimes, you have to give up control of the project to benefit the project. And more moderators and maintainers who want to help would certainly be found. But not to be only negative, this project is still the best of its kind. If you learn all its quirks and modify it to your purpose, it will become a tool allowing you to do campaigns of all kinds, with a level of automation that is impossible if you write the tooling yourself. Red Team Phishing Simulations: Using Evilginx2 and GoPhish

Have you ever wondered about how X(formerly known as Twitter) identifies bots that are tweeting spam? or how banks identify fraudulent accounts? or how GitHub identifies faulty servers in the network? Such systems are built by information security teams that monitor and take down such activities at scale using AI/ML systems. In cases where the automation can’t handle or identify, incident response teams take them down. These learnings are captured and then train new ML classifiers to identify outliers. Bad actors have a wide range of sophistication and their intent varies too. Some bad actors create fake profiles that can be used to carry out many different types of abuse: scraping, spamming, fraud, and phishing, among others. To build robust countermeasures against different types of attacks on our platform, a funnel of defenses is built to detect and take down fake accounts at multiple stages. Example of how an attacker goes after your system (1) The attacker needs to first create an account for which they would use PVAcreator or other tools (2) Using the automated accounts, the attacker needs to reach the data by navigating through the network and moving laterally.
