In this interview, I talk to Yvonne Eskenzi, owner of the specialist cybersecurity PR agency Eskenzi PR. We’re going to be talking about her new startup she founded with her daughters, an app called . So, with no further ado, into the questions! The Zensory What is your company in a nutshell? We are creating an app which bridges the gap between productivity and wellbeing. Why is now the time for your company to exist? I’ve worked for a cybersecurity PR agency for a long time, over 20 years. In lockdown my daughter and I were very, very aware of the fact that people struggled to focus well. People were overwhelmed, burnt out, stressed and anxious. We started looking at what was out there to help people focus better, be more creative, when working on their own and realised that there wasn’t really anything. So, we took the absurd decision, with no experience whatsoever, to develop an app. What we wanted originally was to create a building where you could go in, and you’d stimulate your senses, which each room dedicated to another sense. Now those things have totally mushroomed, I went to one called on Friday, and immersiveness has become very trendy. Dopamine Experience We spoke to some 20 neuroscientists, and worked through about 200 papers on what helps people get into the right mindset to work better. It all comes down to a very simple concept, trying to calm your , the fight and flight part of your brain. You can’t think when you’re stressed. amygdala What we’re trying to do is calm that down so that you can actually focus by stimulating the front part of your brain using your . prefrontal cortex Certainly in we know that people are under-resourced. They don’t have enough staff. They’re burning out. They’ve got to be constantly on high alert for anomalies the whole time. So within our industry there’s never been a more apt time to look at how we can calm people down. cybersecurity Along with the mental health side, neurodiversity is a major factor in cybersecurity. We have so many people who are neurodivergent, and that’s a great thing as people are talking about it now. And we’ve found that our app helps people get into the right mindset. Weirdly, the other apps out there tend to only concentrate on meditation, while ours aims to stimulate whichever sense you respond to, so it could be music and sound, it could be light, could be smell, could be touch, could be movement which is why it works so well if you are on the spectrum. What do you love about your team, and why are you the ones to solve this problem? I love this team because I started this journey with my oldest daughter, Jasmine. And then my youngest daughter Jade has joined us so it’s a mother and two daughters running this which is phenomenal. And because it’s cross-generational, we see everything from different points of view which has been fantastic. Interestingly, we have had lots of people using the app and reviewing it, telling us they have  ADHD and it’s one of the best things they’d ever used. Then Jasmine started thinking about the symptoms people were talking about and got diagnosed, which shocked us all, and is probably why the app works the way it does as she’s been integral to its design and even wrote the binaural beats and music. I’ve always suffered from SAD as has Jade, and just listening to the binaural beats looking at the naturescapes and touchpads has really helped me feel less anxious and calmer. The whole app comes from a very personal space, where we’ve developed it in the hope it can help others calm down to focus well. There aren’t many people that necessarily put their money where their mouth is, and I’ve decided to do that. If you weren’t building your startup, what would you be doing? I’m really doing two jobs at the same time, so my daughters are building the startup and I’m advising them and spending a lot of time with them doing it. If I wasn’t doing it, I’d still be running Eskenzi PR. What would I do if I wasn’t doing either of those? I’d still carry on. I love what I do, I wouldn’t give it up for anything. At the moment, how do you measure success? What are your metrics? Well, we have a 4.9 star review on the and 5 on the . And that’s for an MVP still being developed. Then there’s reviews from people writing to us, telling us how it’s changing their life. We were probably one of the busiest stands at a recent conference. App Store Play Store We’re just a tiny team, literally three of us with a few technical people helping, and we’re somehow doing really well so it’s definitely something that people need and want. We have our first paid pilot coming up with __ __which is really exciting. KnowBe4 We’ve been giving it away to charities that we believe in, so there’s police using it with domestic violence survivors and some NHS wellness hubs are using it as well. At the moment, our measure of success is feedback we’re getting from users, which is phenomenally exciting and positive. In a few sentences, what do you offer to whom? So, as short as possible. It’s an app that uses your five senses to help you improve your mood, to focus or relax. What’s most exciting about your traction to date? Definitely the feedback we’re getting, people are absolutely loving it. That’s rewarding to see. Where do you think your growth will be next year? I think cybersecurity is our industry, it’s my industry. I’ve been in over 25 years and I think cybersecurity professionals really, really need this. It’s necessary in the industry. It would be great to have 50 paying clients and our paid pilot successful, and becoming a really big project. I have this model in my head, kind of a Robin Hood model, where corporate customers pay us for the app for their staff, and that subsidises us to give it away to students and kids, the NHS, charities. I’d love to think that so long as we’re self-sufficient, the rest we would use to fund support for charities who can benefit from it. That’s our vision. Tell us about your first paying customer and revenue expectations over the next year. We have our paid pilot with KnowBe4, which is phenomenally exciting. I’m so pleased they had the trust in us to trial it with 100 of their customers, so we’re going to work very, very hard to try it to see how it’s helping them with their training. The idea is if you can get into a good space for your cybersecurity awareness training, you’ll more easily be able to focus and identify anomalies such as phishing attacks. While you’re doing the training you’d spend a couple of minutes doing some breath work, listening to the music, playing with the touchpad visuals, and quietening down your amygdala. Then focus while you’re going through the training. Revenue expectations, I hope we’re self-sufficient and making money with this at this time next year. What’s your biggest threat? I think the meditation apps. Everyone compares us to them, but they’re very one dimensional. They only do meditation, while we do everything from breathing to touch pads, music to movement. We’ve even got our own essential oils. The meditation apps are worth billions of dollars, and have loads of people working for them, so our biggest threat is scaling quickly and dealing with the techies and devs which is a constant demand on us. Our biggest advantage though is developing from the heart and giving it a soul that others can benefit from. Thanks to Yvonne for speaking with me about The Zensory. There’s a lot of pressure to be constantly on which takes a toll and means many of the best and brightest burn out too soon. How to Stay Safe When Browsing Online or Viewing Emails at Home or Work

Even after the 2020 U.S. Presidential Election came to what most would believe to be an end, the ongoing legal drama in which the Trump Campaign is refusing to concede the already decided Electoral College votes to President Elect Joe Biden and Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris’ victory. Harris, both the first woman of color, Black and Indian descent, on a major party ticket, is now the first woman in U.S. history to serve as vice president. As Vice President-Elect, she is the embodiment of black and brown America. Her celebration speech certainly gave hope to those marginalized voices speaking out for the inclusion of Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC), Women, and LGTBQIA. Throughout the campaign, Harris has repeatedly expressed her support for and the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement: criminal law reform “ ,” Harris said in an interview conducted back in September during the NAACP’s national annual convention. Nothing that we have achieved that has been about progress, in particular around civil rights, has come without a fight, and so I always am going to interpret these protests as an essential component of evolution in our country — as an essential component or mark of a real democracy The next round of change, we can hope to see, is the increased funding of Black women startups, who all lead the pack when it comes to being marginalized. Currently, these startups receive 0.2% of all funding. Women of color represent 39% of the total female population in the U.S., but only account for 89% of the net new women-owned businesses per day (1.625) over the past year, . according to Forbes In 2019, women of color are leading the women-owned business fight, accounting for 50% of all women-owned businesses. An estimated 6.4 million women of color-owned companies employed nearly 2.4 million people and generated $422.5 billion in revenue. While the number of women-owned businesses grew 21% from 2014 to 2019, firms owned by women of color grew an astounding 43%, and African American women-owned firms grew even faster at 50%. Will we see those voices silenced, finally heard? Will we see actresses like continue to rise above bullying for having a lead role in a historical adaptation of Cleopatra? Gal Gadot How about the rise of tech accelerators which help provide the mechanism for BIPOC, women, and other marginalized voices to be heard? #1. The Future of Entertainment Back in September, news broke at that film director Ron Howard, film producer Brian Grazer, and CEO Tyler Mitchell were launching their own accelerator which they hope will help diversify Hollywood. TechCrunch’s Disrupt conference Grazer, whose work you know well (“Apollo 13,” “A Beautiful Mind,” and Netflix’s “Hillbilly Elegy,” took conference attendees back 25 years on what the entertainment and film industry used to look like--an opaque system where original writers struggled to penetrate the industry. The accelerator aims to provide a scalable system for evaluating 2,000 script submissions each week. , the startup accelerator, comes from Imagine Entertainment, the production company founded by Howard and Grazer. “We were able to build a system that leverages both technology as well as expert systems evaluating not just the writers, but the readers--almost like financial analysts--and try to come up with metrics in a world where there aren’t stats,” the accelerator’s CEO, Tyler Mitchell says. Impact Creative Systems In a statement, Mitchell also highlighted that in Impact’s first cohort of 87 writers, 39% were BIPOC, 10% were LGBTQ and it was split 50-50 between men and women, with 11 different countries represented. “How can we create an opportunity to have access to the epicenter of employment in the media business, which is Hollywood?’ Grazer presented. Howard followed up by emphasizing that the diversity they hope to create comes from “fresh new voices” with “no statistical goals or agendas in mind--it’s just beginning in a really honest way.” This is only the beginning to a , as other endeavors have recently launched--Christian Dior Parfums project, Dior Stands With Women, in partnership with Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project (CTAOP), to support young scholarships for leaders of tomorrow; Justin Bieber and Arianna Grande’s ‘Stuck With U’ Mother’s Day music video incorporating “all the moms and 1 special dad;” and ‘13 Reasons Why’ star, Mark Pellegrino and internet attorney, Andrew Rossow’s announcement of their new anti-cyberbullying program, ‘The Guardian Project.’ series of changes Hollywood is making Warner Bros. Sending Entire 2021 Slate of Film to Digital Streaming Platforms In an unprecedented announcement this week, , including The Matrix 4, The Suicide Squad, and Dune to HBO Max for 31 days--the same day it hits theatres. This comes after the studio previously announced that Wonder Woman 1984 would also be going to HBO Max on December 25. Warner Bros. revealed it would be sending 17 films The studio's 2021 slate includes projects such as The Suicide Squad, The Matrix 4,  Dune, Godzilla vs. Kong and Space Jam: A New Legacy. Cybersecurity Despite the ongoing presence of COVID-19, tech accelerators have thankfully provided the blood to many organizations who have dedicated its time and resources to putting people to work and helping fund those suffering from the global pandemic. The nonprofit also receives support from corporate partners including Bank of America, Florida Blue, Tampa Bay Rays, among others. Headstream SecondMuse The innovation hub works with teens, tech innovators, and other experts is helping spur the development of digital wellbeing by investing in tech that will meaningfully benefit teens as they grow up. Specifically, the accelerator is . These innovations are centered around the social media world and online communities, which are prime examples of technologies that need serious redesign when it comes to diverse thinking and protecting against hate speech on marginalized groups. calling for applications that are specifically tech inclusive and relevant to teens of color, LGBTQ+ teens, and teen girls Out of 93 total applicants, nearly 60% identified as female or non-binary, and nearly 50% of the applicants identified as people of color. From this pool of applicants, Headstream pushed out a cohort of , primarily filled by women, with people of color making up nearly half of the group. Knowbella Tech is a Cincinnati-based company leveraging blockchain technology to create a platform for open science and scientific collaboration. Their mission is to connect global researchers to the $4 trillion of idle intellectual property and knowledge languishing in institutions, universities and companies across the globe. The company aims to raise a cool $50 million through their STO which, for the moment, is the current funding cap for Reg A+ compliance. Knowbella Tech As described by CEO Mark Pohlkamp, completing the regulatory groundwork for an STO is “longer, more expensive, time-consuming and painful,” than an ICO, but the return in investor confidence and safety more than makes the effort worthwhile. With Knowbella Tech one of the first companies to file under Reg A+ rather than Reg D, crypto investors will watch this space with interest to see how this trailblazer fares through the SEC process. RideCoin RideCoin is a blockchain alternative to Uber and Lift and market themselves as the next step in the disruption of the taxi marketplace. promise to cut out the middleman, allowing drivers to work for themselves and passengers to pay less. It’s essentially a taxi bounty system where those in a rush offer more money for faster service, and those in not so much of a hurry can offer less. RideCoin RideCoin is one of a growing number of STOs hosted on the Startengine platform. They plan to issue two tokens, one a security and the other a utility, with the security token being SEC compliant. As RideCoin CEO Jimmy Gorham states, “Raising funds to launch a project via ICO is an investment contract, and ought to be monitored by the government. I believe in this authority, and agree with the classification.” dexFreight are a business to business marketplace for domestic and international shippers, freight forwarders, and carriers. The worldwide logistic industry in which they will compete is an absolute behemoth, and there have already been a number of ICOs to attempt to tackle it. Where dexFreight differ to their competition is in the fact that they are the first logistics firm to pursue Reg A+ compliance. dexFreight As a transport company dexFreight understands the importance of reaching their destination in timely fashion. In the words of CEO Rajat Rajbhandari, “dexFreight looks forward to completing one of the earliest STOs under Reg A+ and being a model for other companies to follow.” By 2023 the worldwide logistics industry is estimated to be worth $15 trillion, so the open-source dexFreight platform could be a highly profitable proposition, especially if it can be the first to arrive. Mandala is a digital asset exchange based in the Cayman Islands which plans to use two different arrangements: Reg A+ and Reg S. The first will be Reg S which is a “safe harbor” exemption, only available to firms outside America. In tandem with Reg S fundraising, the company also seeks to file under Reg A+ allowing it to seek investment from America.
