To run your RSpec test suite faster you will configure parallel jobs with matrix strategy on GitHub Actions. GitHub Actions Automate your workflow on GitHub Actions makes it easy to automate all your software workflows with world-class CI/CD. Building, testing, and deploying your code right from GitHub became available with simple YAML configuration. GitHub Actions You can even create a few YAML config files to run a different set of rules on your CI like scheduling daily CI builds. But let’s focus strictly on how to get running tests for Rails app on . GitHub Actions Setup Ruby on Rails on GitHub Actions with YAML config In your project repository, you need to create file Thanks to it GitHub will run your CI build.     bin/rails db:setup To run RSpec tests across parallel jobs you need to set up matrix feature and thanks to that run the whole test suite distributed across jobs. Configuring a build matrix A build matrix provides different configurations for the virtual environment to test. For instance, a workflow can run a job for more than one supported version of a language, operating system, etc. For each configuration, a copy of the job runs and reports status. In case of running parallel tests, you want to run the Rails application on the same Ruby version and Ubuntu system. But you want to split RSpec test suite into 2 sets so half of the tests go to a first parallel job and the second half to another job. To split tests you can use Ruby gem that will split tests across parallel GitHub jobs in a dynamic way. Thanks to that each parallel job will be consuming a set of tests fetched from Knapsack Pro API Queue to ensure each parallel job finishes work at a similar time. This allows for evenly distributed tests and no bottleneck in parallel jobs (no slow job). Your CI build will be as fast as possible. Knapsack Pro In our case, you split tests across 2 parallel jobs so you need to set 2 as . Then each parallel job should have assigned index to starting from 0. The first parallel job gets index 0 and the second job gets index 1. Managing multiple jobs simultaneously requires a high level of organization, time management, and prioritization skills. Successfully juggling these responsibilities also depends on leveraging the right tools to keep track of tasks, deadlines, and communications efficiently. Been there, done that. Here are 6 Strategies and Tools that I found helpful if you need to manage multiple jobs 6 Strategies to Manage Multiple Jobs 1. Clarify what you need to do Define specific work for each job to prevent going around without knowing what has to be delivered. 2. Communicate / Align Openly To do the first point well, you need to be transparent with your employers about your commitments (especially if you are working on multiple projects for him/her). If you are working freelance, then you need to make sure you know the deliverables and deadlines well for each job. 3. Prioritize Tasks Identify which tasks are most urgent or important each day or week. This helps in allocating your time and energy where they are most needed. The easy and impactful way to do this is by using The Eisenhower Matrix. 4. Keep Track Of Your Schedule After prioritizing tasks, diligent tracking ensures nothing falls through the cracks and deadlines are met. To manage time for these jobs effectively, I’ve found the timeboxing method, calendar, and reminders super helpful. 5. For me, the best way I found is: (1) planning exhaustively first, reading best practices, aligning with managers, then (2) doing deep work with the support of helpful tools. 6. Digital Calendars (Google Calendar) I’ve used this to block time for each job, including specific tasks and deadlines. I also block my deep work time to get things done without distraction. 2. Task Management Tools I use a notebook for simple todolist 🙂 but for project management, I use Google Sheets most of the time. It’s a versatile and powerful tool for me. Because it’s basic, I don’t get into the trap of prettifying instead of working. 3. Time Tracking Tools I opt for simplicity, so I use the timer clock on my computer. I set the countdown time based on each task length I decided. 4. AIs I use ChatGPT and Gemini to quickly research new knowledge/definitions. They have been really helpful. Just need to remember to double-check the sources. 5. Note-Taking Apps I used to use paper and Google Docs. 6 Strategies and Tools to Manage Multiple Jobs Effectively

Resume (or CV) is probably one of the most important documents you can have. It's the passport when you want to find your dream job, and a properly written resume is your visa. In two words: resume is your work and skills history summary. Your resume has only one purpose: to help an employer find out whether you're a good fit or not for a role. It has its own structure and style, so the more you follow the rules, the more are your chances to be invited to interview. In this article, I'm going to provide you an on how to write a based on more than 20 resumes I've made for different fields. This guide will suit well for IT-related specialties, but also works to non IT-related roles. ultimate step-by-step guide professional resume We will go through three steps: 1 - research, 2 - all data composition, and 3 - formatting. In the first step we will research the job market to have better keywords in our resume, in the second step we will fill our data into one document which at the last step will be formatted into the pretty form you'd like. Step 1 - Research The first and best tool you need to create a resume is Google Sheets. Yes, Excel/Sheets are your very first tools for resume creation, not Google Docs nor Word. You would ask "why?", and the answer is simple: every good work starts from research. Foremost, we need to create a spreadsheet document with three columns: , and a separate column : Required skill Frequency Vacancy URL You can copy the template from here Also, we will have to use job board websites, like or . There probably can be some other websites which are used in your region, so it's better to do some research on it and find out what suits your situation the most. LinkedIn Indeed Now we're ready to start. Use at least two-three job boards, apply filters regarding your desired position/location/experience. It's better to go as specific on position names as possible. "Software Engineer" can give you many types of software engineering, so you will have to scan numerous totally different vacancies, which is not good for research and its results. If you don't have any work experience, and there are less than 30 vacancies for non-experienced, set 1–2 years in filters to have more vacancies for research. Also, companies are ready to review your resume in some cases and help you on the onboarding stage depending on skills you have: like good knowledge of some language, knowledge of some fields like physics, marketing, food cooking etc. After setting all the required filters, we go one-by-one and scan vacancies for requirements. Fill them into your document, or increase the number if you have already seen this requirement. Save vacancy links, it will be very handy in the future. We must go through as many vacancies as we can (or the top 30-40 in total) from different sources. You can go with a more significant number, but it will not make a big difference if you have a specific position name like "React.js Front-End Developer". Your document will look like this: You will have way more skills in the document, it's just an example If there are very frequent skills, but you are not sure if you have them, it would be very useful to spend some time on testing these skills or gaining additional education to fit the required level. For example: if Spanish is a common requirement, but your Spanish is only "¡Hola!", you will have an advantage if you increase your knowledge at least to an average level like A2 or B1. So now the research step is finished, we're ready for the next step. Step 2 - Fill all the data When the research is finished, it's time to fill the data and use suitable tools for resume creation: Google Docs or Word (or any popular text redactor). Create a blank document or use this . This document will accumulate all the experiences and skills you have. template ACTUAL Add these sections to the document: - required Headline - required Contact information - required Work experience - required, but can be merged with skills block Languages - required Education - if you have them Certifications and licenses - if you have scientific publications; for bloggers, you can skip it and place URL to your blog in the contact block Publications - if you have them Awards - optional Volunteer work - required Summary - required Skills Fill the document one by one following this guide because . This order lets you achieve the correct structure of information and focus on the most important parts. THE ORDER MATTERS This also contains a couple of examples to make it easier to fill. template Headline This section is easy to fill. It's just your full name (like in your documents) and desired position name which could be found in vacancy headlines, for ex: "Manual QA". Contact information Second easy to fill section. The most important thing here is relevancy. All contact data should be relevant and actual, so the recruiter should be able to contact you with this data. Your phone number, email and work location are important to specify. For remote workers, you can also specify the location or time-zone of remote work, for example "Remote/Germany". Work experience The most important section of every resume is the work experience section. All other sections could be skipped by recruiter easily if your experience is relevant and outstanding. Here you should list in all your relevant workplaces, positions, time period and your . Don't forget that results matter more than responsibilities, they make the difference between developers who fix features and implement bugs. All results should be short, precise and include numbers. Also, you can add one bullet point to write a small description of the workplace or project where you have worked. measurable results Languages This is a required section. However, you can skip it just by moving your languages to the skills section like this: But if you have enough space for it in your resume, you can just list all your languages with knowledge level at least on A2, in case they're relevant for your job application. Education In the education section you just list all the places where you have studied, its names, locations and time periods. If you have a high degree in one field, then just include the highest and don't include your elementary or middle school. If you have passed specialized courses, you can also include them. You also can specify one bullet on your most interesting achievement: like top place in Olympiad, scientific publication, high GPA score, etc. Certifications and licenses / Publications / Awards These three sections are optional, but if you have awards, certifications, scientific publications, they will highlight you from a dozen other resumes. The format is pretty obvious: bullet points with certification/award/publication names and dates. Volunteer work The format of this section is almost the same as work experience's format, but this section is optional most of the time. However, if volunteer work is valued for your position or field, then you have to fill it too. Summary The objective of a resume summary is to accentuate elements related to the position you are seeking, which are not detailed elsewhere in your resume. This includes showcasing transferable skills, high-level accomplishments or a context that makes your accomplishments stand out. Also, you can specify your motivation and what you're looking for. Skills The Skills section is a keyword section. It's used for resume search and matching. The better keywords you have, the higher are your chances to appear in the search results. To build a correct list of skills, you will need all the frequent required skills from , and you can add skills from your already described work experience, education and other sections. Add only relevant skills and the like "Team player" or "Result-driven". Step 1 - Research skip all cliché skills Step 2.1 - Spellcheck Use some spellcheck tools like or to fix all possible typos. . If your resume has typos, it will decrease your chances drastically. Grammarly LanguageTool It's an IMPORTANT step And we've finished the second step. Now we have all the necessary data in one document. And it's time for formatting! Step 3 - Formatting The main goal of the formatting step is to format all the most important data in one page in a readable style with (ATS) compatibility. You can try two pages if you have a lot of relevant work experience, but one page is always preferable. If you can remove some optional sections or shorten them to fit everything in one page, it's better to do so. Application Tracking System File format The resume should look the same both in and formats. PDF is more common. However, sometimes ATS could require format, so having them both is an ultimate move. .docx .pdf .docx Template The right template is important for a professional resume. So there are three main requirements for a resume template: readability, style and ATS-compatibility. The readability requirement is challenging to estimate until you fill all the necessary data, but if you pick an ATS-compatible template, it's going to be human-readable in most cases with all the relevant data. The style requirement is determined by your seniority and the work field. If you work in design, you can showcase some "bells and whistles" in your resume, but in most other cases a minimalistic style will work better. Over the past few months, I’ve been on a deep dive into the world of customer discovery and the Jobs to Be Done (JTBD) framework. This comprehensive, step-by-step guide is the result of extensive research, several experiments, and even a custom GPT designed specifically for JTBD (link in the resources section). First things first, what exactly is Jobs To Be Done (JTBD)? The JTBD framework is an approach that shifts the focus from products to the customer's needs. It centers around understanding the 'job' or task that a customer needs to accomplish using a product or service. In essence, the customer 'hires' the product or service to complete this job. The JTBD framework's advantage lies in its ability to concentrate on addressing problems rather than focusing on any specific solutions. To illustrate this concept, here are two simple examples: Ride-Sharing Services (e.g., or ): Uber Lyft A customer uses a ride-sharing app to book a car. Traditional View: The customer's job is to reach a destination quickly and comfortably, avoiding the hassles of driving or parking. The ride-sharing service is hired not just for transport but for convenience and efficiency. JTBD View: Coffee Shops (e.g., Starbucks): Customers visit coffee shops to purchase coffee. Traditional View: While buying coffee is one aspect, customers also 'hire' the coffee shop as a place to meet friends, work, or relax. The job extends to seeking a pleasant experience and environment. JTBD View: In each example, JTBD shifts the focus from the product itself (car rides, coffee) to what the customer is really seeking to achieve with these products or services in their daily life. Three concepts to understand JTBD To fully grasp JTBD, we need to define three key concepts: Market Tony Ulwick redefines a market not as a vertical, geography, or technology but as a group of people and the job they are trying to get done. It's about discerning what customers truly seek to accomplish with a product or service. Jobs In JTBD, a 'job' is a task or goal a customer aims to achieve in a particular situation by using a product or service. It's action-oriented, encompassing functional, emotional, and social dimensions. Jobs are typically phrased as action-oriented tasks. They should start with a verb and clearly describe what the customer is trying to accomplish. For example: "Maintain personal health and fitness." "Plan and enjoy a vacation." "Enhance professional skills." Outcomes These are the desired end-states or goals customers aim for when hiring a product or service for a job. Outcomes are specific, and measurable, and define what success looks like for the customer. Phrasing outcomes should include metrics or standards used by customers to evaluate success. For example: "Minimize the time required to plan a vacation itinerary." "Maximize the reliability of maintaining a regular exercise routine." "Ensure the latest industry knowledge is incorporated into skill enhancement." How to Apply Jobs-To-Be-Done in 4 steps Step 1: Initial Market Exploration Begin by exploring potential markets based on preliminary insights or hypotheses about customer needs. This can involve exploratory research, such as interviews with potential users, market analysis, and studying existing data. From this exploratory research, identify a range of jobs that potential customers might be trying to get done. These jobs don't need to be detailed at this stage but should give a broad sense of the tasks or goals your potential customers are trying to achieve. Based on these identified jobs, narrow down to a specific market that seems most viable or underserved. This is where you define your market in terms of a specific group of people and the core functional job they are trying to get done. 💡 For example, imagine that you are a product manager at Airbnb. By looking at the data and market trends, you notice that a sizable part of your user base is booking stays for longer periods (e.g. 1 month or longer) and are traveling solo. You decide therefore to explore this potential market. So instead of saying "We are targeting the travel industry" (a vertical), say "We are targeting solo travelers looking to connect with local cultures" (a group of people and their emotional job) or "We are targeting solo travelers looking for long term temporary accommodation" (a functional job). Step 2: Collect all the customer's Jobs and Outcomes The second step in applying the JTBD framework is to collect all the jobs customers are trying to get done when interacting with your product and the outcomes they want to achieve for each job. The end result should be two extensive lists, one for jobs and one for outcomes, phrased as we have seen in the examples above. The best way to collect jobs and outcomes at this stage is through qualitative user interviews, to understand what your users' goals are and what they are trying to accomplish. But rather than spending countless hours in user interviews, here is a hack Tony Ulwick suggests to speed things up and make the process more efficient: Take the top 2–3 experts in your market and organize an interview with them at the same time, either virtually or in person. Divide the session into 2 slots (either the same day or different days) - one for jobs and one for outcomes. For each session, try to get the experts to agree on: A list of the jobs they are trying to get done How to formulate the job statements A list of outcomes they want to achieve for each job How to formulate the outcome statements 💡 Here is how I would apply the framework following our example of a product manager at Airbnb exploring the market of solo travelers/digital nomads looking for accommodation: Identify top contributors in digital nomad online groups and communities (e.g. Facebook, Reddit, NomadList) Invite 3 of them for 2 rounds of interviews on separate days, with all of them together In the first round, focus on capturing jobs they try to get done when booking accommodation. Ask questions like: "Can you walk me through finding accommodation as a digital nomad?" "What factors do you consider when choosing where to stay?" 4. Turn job findings into job statements (see table below) 5. In the second round with the same experts, focus on outcomes wanted for each job. Ask questions like: "Let's discuss finding budget-friendly places with good connectivity. What does success look like here?" "How do you know if an accommodation meets your needs?" "What factors determine a successful stay?" 6. Turn outcome findings into outcome statements (see table below) 7. Interview more people to confirm findings or get additional insights if needed.
