I began in finance as a principal investor at Draper Fisher Jurvetson where I sourced and managed venture investments during my four-year residency. While I was there I sourced and worked with Nervana Systems, Flux, DroneDeploy, Periscope Data, LendKey, and a stealth insurance company. My passion for investing began when I invested my Bar Mitzvah money at the age of 13 growing $2.5K into $100K. Because of my background in finance as well as product design from my time at Stanford, I am committed to empowering funders with options and information during fundraising, ultimately bringing fairness and transparency to the process. What's your startup called? And in a sentence or two, what does it do? Our startup is called Hum Capital. We are the funding platform that is connecting great companies with the right capital by operating like Kayak for fundraising.  We offer a single destination where companies can understand all of their financing options and be matched with pre-qualified investors -- which helps make the fundraising process more efficient for both entrepreneurs and investors. What is the origin story? When looking across the landscape of new lenders, we see very few building a nimble, multi-asset foundation. When I was an investor at DFJ, I tried to find and finance a multi-asset lender but couldn’t find anyone doing this and doing it well. That was why I decided to start Humalongside cofounders Csaba Konkoly and Chris Olivares. All companies should be empowered to see their businesses as clearly as seasoned investors do. We believe that with the right tools, accessing institutional capital can become as predictable and efficient as buying a product on Amazon or finding a flight on Kayak. If you weren’t building your startup, what would you be doing? If I wasn’t building my startup, I would continue my work as an investor. The investment industry has been a passion of mine since I began my career and is the heart behind Hum.  I started Hum when I realized I needed a tool like this to make my personal investing more efficient and effective.  By developing an industry-wide solution, I hope that we can make the fundraising process more inclusive, efficient, and transparent by evaluating companies based on their performance, and not on who they know in their network. At the moment, how do you measure success? What are your core metrics? We measure our success through growth in Hum’s Intelligent Capital Market.  That’s our SaaS-based platform that connects to companies’ financial systems, analyzes their performance, and then connects them with investors interested in companies like theirs. Today, we have a growing list of 2,000 companies who have connected to the ICM, and 250+ institutional investors looking at the companies who want to raise funds.  By bringing both sides together in an online platform, we’ve already helped companies secure more than $400 million in capital commitments in 2020. Make sure you invest the time so your goals are unambiguous and disseminated across the entire organization.  It’s not rocket science, just hard work. What is something surprising you've learned this year that your contemporaries would benefit from knowing? I've been surprised to learn how little information venture investors are using to analyze growth-stage companies. Particularly, due to accelerated funding timelines, at the series C to pre IPO. Investors get a deck, the company's model, and sprint in 3-7 days to come up to speed before writing a $150M check. In the era of cloud-based financial systems, it seems archaic for investors to rely on Excel and data files sent by email as the best solution.  Very hard for investors to play the role of productive check and balance when optimizing for speed. This makes private transactions feel more like the adversarial trading environments you find in public markets than the partnerships that VCs love to talk about. HackerNoon Being named the Best Startup in New York City is incredible validation that the traditional fundraising process is ripe for disruption––and we look forward to continuing our mission of connecting great companies with the right capital. How do you or your company intend to embrace the responsibility of this title in 2022? Our goal is to help companies––no matter where they are located, who’s in their network, or where they went to college––fundraise with confidence. We believe that all companies should be empowered to see their businesses through the same lens as institutional investors. While the NY area is well served by capital, we have found that even NY-based companies can get higher valuations and lower cost of capital by leveraging Hum. What are some of the goals you’re looking forward to accomplishing in 2022 (whether it be through company initiatives or your personal journey)? From a personal perspective, I have leveraged quite a few tools to grow into a CEO. These range from therapists and coaches to SSRIs and budgeting exercises. As you look at the variety of concerning trends in the world around you, what solutions can you think of? Name three trends and three solutions. Be as brief or as detailed as you like. Especially as uncertainty in the Ukrainian conflict impacts the public markets and has a ripple effect on fundraising in the private markets. In the best of times, using your performance data to articulate a clear story about your company’s potential is best practice, and in volatile market conditions like today, using data to tell your story is imperative. Global volatility: Whether looking to raise equity or debt, investors will pay even closer attention to a company’s performance and financials in order to manage their own investment risk. The more analytical work you can do for the investor, the less friction there is for them to fund you and the more control you have over your company’s story. As a former venture capitalist, I tell all founders that confidence in your data will have major implications on your valuation and deal terms when you’re looking to raise capital in the months ahead. COVID-19 and the rise of new variants has obviously been a challenge, even in the investing world. The absence of social connections formed during in-person meetings over the last two years has left companies and investors more dependent on data to determine if they’re a good match. Reducing bias in fundraising: Simultaneously, there’s the challenge of accessibility in financing - a challenge contributing to the lack of diversity we continue to see, despite recent improvements. In 2021, Black entrepreneurs saw a in venture funding from the previous year, but still account for only 1.3% of U.S. Venture Capital money. 281% increase Relying on performance data instead of personal connections has tremendous potential to remove bias from fundraising, while also allowing companies and investors to navigate the constantly changing COVID landscape. : Historically, fundraising opportunities have been centered around finance and technology hubs like Silicon Valley or New York City. However, with COVID de-centralizing the access to opportunity via greater acceptance around hybrid and remote business models, companies in traditionally under-represented regions are now able to break down geographic walls to reach investors. Expanding geographical access to funding Funding platforms like Hum are providing the solution to continue this trend, even when investors and companies return to in-person models. At Hum, 46% of the over 2,000+ companies on the platform are located across 47 states outside of the coastal US regions. We are seeing them having a much easier time breaking into the coastal clubs for capital that would have been impenetrable before. After participating in this journey, is there anything that you would like the team to know? HackerNoon After an exceptional 2021 where we introduced our funding platform to the world and closed our Series A round, our team is both excited and grateful to continue working towards our vision of creating a world where potential is unconstrained by capital. What is something special about you or your company that you’ve rarely had the chance to properly share but really wanted to? (Give this one a proper think, I’ll know if you didn’t!) One of my main priorities as a business leader, particularly in the VC/finance industry, is to lead by example when it comes to destigmatizing mental health and employee wellbeing. As an early entrepreneur, I realized that properly addressing and managing mental health challenges (which for me meant getting my anxiety under control) was the underlying key to success. *I was able to build the mental strength to develop the skills to reframe my ambitions into an enthusiasm for the daily challenge of the job, as opposed to building toward a particular exit or outcome. * This is a mindset that I have strived to infuse into Hum’s culture, and ultimately it's something I aim to share with the companies and early entrepreneurs on our platform. I hope that it becomes an industry standard in the years ahead. What song or music album are you currently enjoying? I have a 2 year old and a 4 year old so seeing “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” appear on the Spotify Global 50 made me feel like I wasn't going crazy thinking the music in Encanto was good. Then finding out that Lin Manuel Miranda wrote the majority of it made perfect sense! What are some concepts you wish people knew more about? Debt financing: Debt is often mistakenly thought of as an undesirable financing option, while equity is viewed as the gold standard. In reality, equity is typically in a preferred structure which is rather debt-like and I wish entrepreneurs better understood this. Whether you receive funding through debt or equity, you’re receiving the same money. In consumer and personal finance, we understand debt in terms of mortgages, credit cards, and car loans––but when we borrow money to buy a home, we don’t expect the bank to take 80% of our home appreciation. On the business side, there are still founders viewing debt as a negative option, largely because of the flawed way that the market views equity vs. debt. With debt, you get to keep all your ownership, while still leveraging your company’s cash to expand your growth beyond what your revenues will support. Debt is helpful in bridging revenue shortfalls and funding discrete expansion efforts. A quick search reveals 30,000+ talent in Asia with blockchain listed in their profile, compared to 600,000+ job postings including the keyword. That’s a whopping 20:1 ratio (in favor of blockchain talent)! It is little wonder that in 2020, . The Promise and The Challenge of Automation and AI In The Workplace

According to and Anna Kovner’s , serial entrepreneurs are the key driving forces in the modern business world. Those who succeeded once have significantly higher chances of succeeding in their next venture by 30% when compared to the first-timers. That makes the past performance of an entrepreneur is a strong indicator of a future success.[1] Paul A. Gompers research is a financial asset model that capitalizes on the iterative nature of a personal success. The model creates an ecosystem where an individual (e.g. an entrepreneur) becomes an object of an investment itself.[2] Identity-centric investment model Figure 1: VC model (left) and Identity-centric investment model (right) shows that investing in a personal success creates an opportunity to capitalize multiple attempts of the “breakthrough”. The overall personal success is accumulated during the lifetime through business endeavours, personal projects and outside investments. Figure 1 Identity capitalization and HCBA , the Nobel prize-winning economist, invented the concept of in 1960s that reflects the value of human capacities. He stated that human capital is like any other type of capital could be multiplied through education and enhanced benefits. The concept of human capital recognizes that not all labor is equal and the quality of personal skills can be improved by investing into them. A personal education, experience and natural abilities can be quantified and have an economic value. is a type of financial instrument that is built around identity-centric investment model. It offers individuals an opportunity to fund their endeavours with an equity financing which is something available only to corporations before. It offers investors a chance to fuel a lifetime growth of current and future business leaders and benefit from their achievements. Human Capital Backed Asset (HCBA) Figure 2: Identity capitalization shows the Identity capitalization model and direct relationship between personal success and generated capital through HCBA. The major difference from the enterprise model is that the capital is not bound to a particular project but to a person (e.g. an entrepreneur). Figure 2 “HCBA creates a unique opportunity for individuals to raise funds for their endeavours and vision on their own terms. It gives an equally unique chance for investors to grow their wealth from both early and late stage success of individuals they chose to support.” — Vlas Lezin, Ex-VP of Goldman Sachs The growth criteria for identity capitalization and HCBA coincide with the criteria in traditional capital models where the growth of firms` capitalization correlates with the total market value of assets, it’s and investors belief in future earnings. intrinsic value Intrinsic value of HCBA Secured by personal reputation In the modern society, a personal reputation often equates a brand’s reputation. As internet has allowed businesses to become more visible, business leaders became an immediate representatives of their enterprises. Ones` reckless tweets or unmindful comment can steer chaos and cause enormous losses for a company. HCBA is build to monetize the value of personal reputation, brand, skills and track record. The lifetime of continuous success created by an entrepreneurship and other endeavours is captured in the representative growth of a personal asset. Dividend payout While a personal track record provides a direct support for the market appreciation, hard money tied to a certain asset and provides much better stability, clearer expectations and calculated growth. Thus HCBA has a number of built-in models for paying out the respective dividends. Within these models investors and HCBA issuer can negotiate a mutually beneficial scheme to channel direct financial representation of one’s success to his or her supporters. Return on investment Return on HCBA investment is driven by two major forces of the traditional stock market: . As an individual behind HCBA reaches new validated results, value of his or her personal asset grows along with HCBA market price. market appreciation and dividend payouts HCBA issuer is directly motivated to adhere to the terms negotiated during the initial listing as the model allows disbursement of raised funds and subsequent issuance only after current investors confirm the ongoing compliance with such terms. Additionally, an individual HCBA issuer can decide to buy back part of his or her outstanding emission, pushing price higher. Dividend payouts also play a major role — future cash flows can be discounted to the present value and adjusted for growth to determine an intrinsic value of HCBA.
