          WALDORF-ASTORIA, SEPTEMBER 18, 1906 I am here to make an appeal to the nations in behalf of the simplified spelling. I have come here because they cannot all be reached except through you. There are only two forces that can carry light to all the corners of the globe—only two—the sun in the heavens and the Associated Press down here. I may seem to be flattering the sun, but I do not mean it so; I am meaning only to be just and fair all around. You speak with a million voices; no one can reach so many races, so many hearts and intellects, as you—except Rudyard Kipling, and he cannot do it without your help. If the Associated Press will adopt and use our simplified forms, and thus spread them to the ends of the earth, covering the whole spacious planet with them as with a garden of flowers, our difficulties are at an end. Every day of the three hundred and sixty-five the only pages of the world’s countless newspapers that are read by all the human beings and angels and devils that can read, are these pages that are built out of Associated Press despatches. And so I beg you, I beseech you—oh, I implore you to spell them in our simplified forms. Do this daily, constantly, persistently, for three months—only three months—it is all I ask. The infallible result?—victory, victory all down the line. For by that time all eyes here and above and below will have become adjusted to the change and in love with it, and the present clumsy and ragged forms will be grotesque to the eye and revolting to the soul. And we shall be rid of phthisis and phthisic and pneumonia and pneumatics, and diphtheria and pterodactyl, and all those other insane words which no man addicted to the simple Christian life can try to spell and not lose some of the bloom of his piety in the demoralizing attempt. Do not doubt it. We are chameleons, and our partialities and prejudices change places with an easy and blessed facility, and we are soon wonted to the change and happy in it. We do not regret our old, yellow fangs and snags and tushes after we have worn nice, fresh, uniform store teeth a while. Do I seem to be seeking the good of the world? That is the idea. It is my public attitude; privately I am merely seeking my own profit. We all do it, but it is sound and it is virtuous, for no public interest is anything other or nobler than a massed accumulation of private interests. In 1883, when the simplified-spelling movement first tried to make a noise, I was indifferent to it; more—I even irreverently scoffed at it. What I needed was an object-lesson, you see. It is the only way to teach some people. Very well, I got it. At that time I was scrambling along, earning the family’s bread on magazine work at seven cents a word, compound words at single rates, just as it is in the dark present. I was the property of a magazine, a seven-cent slave under a boiler-iron contract. One day there came a note from the editor requiring me to write ten pages—on this revolting text: “Considerations concerning the alleged subterranean holophotal extemporaneousness of the conchyliaceous superimbrication of the Ornithorhyncus, as foreshadowed by the unintelligibility of its plesiosaurian anisodactylous aspects.” Ten pages of that. Each and every word a seventeen-jointed vestibuled railroad train. Seven cents a word. I saw starvation staring the family in the face. I went to the editor, and I took a stenographer along so as to have the interview down in black and white, for no magazine editor can ever remember any part of a business talk except the part that’s got graft in it for him and the magazine. I said, “Read that text, Jackson, and let it go on the record; read it out loud.” He read it: “Considerations concerning the alleged subterranean holophotal extemporaneousness of the conchyliaceous superimbrication of the Ornithorhyncus, as foreshadowed by the unintelligibility of its plesiosaurian anisodactylous aspects.” I said, “You want ten pages of those rumbling, great, long, summer thunderpeals, and you expect to get them at seven cents a peal?” He said, “A word’s a word, and seven cents is the contract; what are you going to do about it?” I said, “Jackson, this is cold-blooded oppression. What’s an average English word?” He said, “Six letters.” I said, “Nothing of the kind; that’s French, and includes the spaces between the words; an average English word is four letters and a half. By hard, honest labor I’ve dug all the large words out of my vocabulary and shaved it down till the average is three letters and a half. I can put one thousand and two hundred words on your page, and there’s not another man alive that can come within two hundred of it. My page is worth eighty-four dollars to me. It takes exactly as long to fill your magazine page with long words as it does with short ones-four hours. Now, then, look at the criminal injustice of this requirement of yours. I am careful, I am economical of my time and labor. For the family’s sake I’ve got to be so. So I never write ‘metropolis’ for seven cents, because I can get the same money for ‘city.’ I never write ‘policeman,’ because I can get the same price for ‘cop.’ And so on and so on. I never write ‘valetudinarian’ at all, for not even hunger and wretchedness can humble me to the point where I will do a word like that for seven cents; I wouldn’t do it for fifteen. Examine your obscene text, please; count the words.” He counted and said it was twenty-four. I asked him to count the letters. He made it two hundred and three. I said, “Now, I hope you see the whole size of your crime. With my vocabulary I would make sixty words out of those two hundred and five letters, and get four dollars and twenty cents for it; whereas for your inhuman twenty-four I would get only one dollar and sixty-eight cents. Ten pages of these sky-scrapers of yours would pay me only about three hundred dollars; in my simplified vocabulary the same space and the same labor would pay me eight hundred and forty dollars. I do not wish to work upon this scandalous job by the piece. I want to be hired by the year.” He coldly refused. I said: “Then for the sake of the family, if you have no feeling for me, you ought at least to allow me overtime on that word extemporaneousness.” Again he coldly refused. I seldom say a harsh word to any one, but I was not master of myself then, and I spoke right out and called him an anisodactylous plesiosaurian conchyliaceous Ornithorhyncus, and rotten to the heart with holoaophotal subterranean extemporaneousness. God forgive me for that wanton crime; he lived only two hours. From that day to this I have been a devoted and hard-working member of the heaven-born institution, the International Association for the Prevention of Cruelty to Authors, and now I am laboring with Carnegie’s Simplified Committee, and with my heart in the work.... Now then, let us look at this mighty question reasonably, rationally, sanely—yes, and calmly, not excitedly. What is the real function, the essential function, the supreme function, of language? Isn’t it merely to convey ideas and emotions? Certainly. Then if we can do it with words of fonetic brevity and compactness, why keep the present cumbersome forms? But can we? Yes. I hold in my hand the proof of it. Here is a letter written by a woman, right out of her heart of hearts. I think she never saw a spelling-book in her life. The spelling is her own. There isn’t a waste letter in it anywhere. It reduces the fonetics to the last gasp—it squeezes the surplusage out of every word—there’s no spelling that can begin with it on this planet outside of the White House. And as for the punctuation, there isn’t any. It is all one sentence, eagerly and breathlessly uttered, without break or pause in it anywhere. The letter is absolutely genuine—I have the proofs of that in my possession. I can’t stop to spell the words for you, but you can take the letter presently and comfort your eyes with it. I will read the letter: “Miss dear freind I took some Close into the armerry and give them to you to Send too the suffrers out to California and i Hate to treble you but i got to have one of them Back it was a black oll wolle Shevyott With a jacket to Mach trimed Kind of Fancy no 38 Burst measure and palsy menterry acrost the front And the color i woodent Trubble you but it belonged to my brothers wife and she is Mad about it i thoght she was willin but she want she says she want done with it and she was going to Wear it a Spell longer she ant so free harted as what i am and she Has got more to do with Than i have having a Husband to Work and slave For her i gels you remember Me I am shot and stout and light complected i torked with you quite a spell about the suffrars and said it was orful about that erth quake I shoodent wondar if they had another one rite off seeine general Condision of the country is Kind of Explossive i hate to take that Black dress away from the suffrars but i will hunt round And see if i can get another One if i can i will call to the armerry for it if you will jest lay it asside so no more at present from your True freind “i liked your appearance very Much” Now you see what simplified spelling can do. It can convey any fact you need to convey; and it can pour out emotions like a sewer. I beg you, I beseech you, to adopt our spelling, and print all your despatches in it. Now I wish to say just one entirely serious word: I have reached a time of life, seventy years and a half, where none of the concerns of this world have much interest for me personally. I think I can speak dispassionately upon this matter, because in the little while that I have got to remain here I can get along very well with these old-fashioned forms, and I don’t propose to make any trouble about it at all. I shall soon be where they won’t care how I spell so long as I keep the Sabbath. There are eighty-two millions of us people that use this orthography, and it ought to be simplified in our behalf, but it is kept in its present condition to satisfy one million people who like to have their literature in the old form. That looks to me to be rather selfish, and we keep the forms as they are while we have got one million people coming in here from foreign countries every year and they have got to struggle with this orthography of ours, and it keeps them back and damages their citizenship for years until they learn to spell the language, if they ever do learn. This is merely sentimental argument. People say it is the spelling of Chaucer and Spencer and Shakespeare and a lot of other people who do not know how to spell anyway, and it has been transmitted to us and we preserved it and wish to preserve it because of its ancient and hallowed associations. Now, I don’t see that there is any real argument about that. If that argument is good, then it would be a good argument not to banish the flies and the cockroaches from hospitals because they have been there so long that the patients have got used to them and they feel a tenderness for them on account of the associations. Why, it is like preserving a cancer in a family because it is a family cancer, and we are bound to it by the test of affection and reverence and old, mouldy antiquity. I think that this declaration to improve this orthography of ours is our family cancer, and I wish we could reconcile ourselves to have it cut out and let the family cancer go. Now, you see before you the wreck and ruin of what was once a young person like yourselves. I am exhausted by the heat of the day. I must take what is left of this wreck and run out of your presence and carry it away to my home and spread it out there and sleep the sleep of the righteous. There is nothing much left of me but my age and my righteousness, but I leave with you my love and my blessing, and may you always keep your youth. Humans! One interesting twinkle in the dark, vacuous expanse of the cosmos. Trapped on a floating ball of rock to mope into space and be tormented by relentless, conflicting emotions. Prison within and prison without. Awaiting the summon of death. What the hell is this existence and what is its use? At least we have each other. Right? Yes, we do. Plus, the resources of the earth. And most importantly, there's that small voice that keeps telling us to become more. So, we stagger on. Nothing is certain in this great maze of existence but we don't just give in. We grope for purpose in the confusing unknown. We do what we do in search of fulfillment. Thus, we solve problems for those we love. We really dig in and harvest ingenious creations from within us. It makes us happy, so we keep going. We keep chasing that which our heart yearns for. What is it many have asked? What is it that we really want? Some of the smartest among us have given a name to it, and I dare agree with them. It is what it is; Freedom! Freedom from wants, death, and ourselves. Freedom from whatever dares limit us. Freedom from this great bondage that is us. Hence, in our relentless yearning, we build this great bridge of science. Into matter, into space, into life. Into technology! Oh that we may find that which we seek. Oh that we may find; Autonomy! Autonomy Has Always Driven Technology Humans have always been bound by limitations that we constantly rebel against. Imagine the caveman days. Small, slow, and weak as we were, we were completely bound by the harsh laws of the jungle. Dominated by powerful creatures. Yet, our big brain brought us to the very top of the food chain. Inventions like the spear, knife, and arrow with advanced hunting strategies helped us overcome the powerful beasts that ruled the wild. Then, we created our own societies and were ruled by tribal laws. Not very different jungle laws though but strong humans were in charge now. Then came the reign of religion, and priests were in charge. Then came countries with cunning politicians. Then came capitalism with wealthy businessmen who are now running the show. All these changes have been driven by advancements as humans try to take more control of their lives. From being ruled by wild beasts to strong men to priests to politicians and businessmen, people have always invented systems that gave them more control of their lives. And this progress is not only evident in the technology of our leadership but also in the everyday devices that we use. First, we had caves and stone tools, then came villages and metal tools, and then came towns and analog machines. Now, we have cities and digital technology. This drive for autonomy in our technology has culminated in what we call a decentralized internet or web3. Autonomy in Web3 Web 3 remains a relatively recent technology that is yet to be widely understood. Yet, it is already being widely adopted as the advantages are very obvious. Simply put, web3 aims to put the Internet and financial system under the control of everyone and not just a few giant corporations. Why is this necessary you may ask? Well, the answer is simple: "Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely!" The internet and financial systems represent the most critical technologies that humans have been able to develop. Hence, there is a great power in the hands of anyone who controls them. It's no wonder that top government officials and tech billionaires dominate the list of most powerful people in the world. This great power which allows such people to exercise control around the world is akin to the legendary absolute power that absolutely corrupts the wielders. And we have already seen this corruption at play. For example; , , , etc. Facebook has recorded multiple user data breaches Twitter has been accused many times of stifling free speech US politicians were caught cheating through insider trading in the stock market Hence, the internet and financial market which have lasting effects on people’s lives need some level of democracy. This is what web3 promises. Cryptocurrencies were introduced as a means for people to transact directly without passing through middlemen in the banking institutions who often benefit fraudulently from people’s money with little or no punishment. Combining crypto with blockchain technology provides the world with a global decentralized financial internet that no one fully controls and everyone can benefit from. Is Autonomy Truly Possible? Many reservations have been raised about the practicality of web3 and whether it can be truly autonomous. For example; fundamental blockchain infrastructures are often hosted on web2 servers with centralized control. Also, mining cryptocurrency is energy intensive which makes the entire system dependent on power companies. Would the power companies and server owners not be the new bosses in town? Well, that's a critical problem that is yet to be solved. However, blockchain technology is slowly solving the centralized server problem through compressed distributed storage of the technology on the devices of its users. Basically, a blockchain is a database, and every device that connects to the blockchain has a version of the database stored on it. This makes it possible for the billions of devices that users use to connect to the blockchain to function as servers distributed around the world instead of just one central server. Fingers crossed for what will come in the future. About the electricity problem, well, most cryptocurrencies have a limited amount of tokens to be mined, hence, mining is not a forever thing. Also, alternative versions of power like solar make it possible for miners to set up affordable sources of personalized power. Hence, centralized power companies can possibly be bypassed. With these considerations, the autonomy that web3 promises can foreseeably be accomplished. Future of Autonomy Picture this... You fall asleep now and awaken in the autonomous age. Robots run the world now. The planet is one big country run by the United Nations and headquartered in Earth City (a giant circular artificial island built in the Atlantic Ocean on longitude 0 degrees and latitude 0 degrees). Networks of underwater hyperloop lines and speed train bridges interconnect all the continents in minutes and the former countries are nothing but political provinces for proper documentation and security. Autonomous vehicles with little or no accidents dominate the roads and autonomous spaceships transverse space to transport people and resources around the solar system. Humans have finally colonized the solar system. The world lives in abundance as automated high-tech farms meet all our agricultural needs. Basic amenities like water, electricity, and education are free, and everyone gets a living wage to cover secondary needs like real estate around the planets, internet access, and transportation. Advanced amenities like technology, art, entertainment, exploration, and financial trading are where businesses operate. Web3 is fully operational. Hologram devices are all over the place for people to experience the dinterverse (decentralized internet metaverse) which uses all those devices as servers. DAOs, running on open-source technology, are the global means of voting, with Auth ID being the prominent open-source platform for decentralized technology. Industry-based crypto coins are the means of exchange (e.g., techon for technology, agrocoin for agriculture, muse for music, etc.) and cryptex trading (forex trading of the time) is the primary means of employment for everyone with people speculating on which industry will do better based on the season. Bitcoin is, however, immortalized as the only currency accepted around the world across all industries. Global poverty has been eradicated and financial inequality is very low around the world with cryptex trading available to everyone. A decentralized financial system was the game changer as it led to an explosion of prosperity through relatively easy cryptex trading. You investigate your trade on your holophone. You're doing very well and will be making another $50,000 this week. You smile to yourself as you glance out the window of your noiseless starjet (silent speed jets that ferry people around the world in minutes). The city below is a great wonder as people said. You're on vacation in Earth City. It's your first time. You came for it. The statue of autonomy or "the human spirit" as it is fondly called. Many weep upon first beholding its glory. The symbol of human victory on the earth. It appears on the horizon. The shiny bust of a crowned androgynous human child stops at the waist so it's neither male nor female. Completely transparent as if entirely made of glass, hence, the name human spirit. With both hands upraised in freedom, it holds Bitcoin (the first global crypto) in the right hand and a scroll in the left. Your ship does the ceremonial circling of the statue. Then it passes the scroll and you behold those legendary words. You read it in a low voice. "We humans hold that all of us are born free. Free to live, free to love, free to prosper!" A smile crawls up your face, and you resolve to uphold this great motto. Then you hear a phone ring. A familiar ancient music. It gets louder and louder. It's your phone. You were dreaming of course. You curse as you pick up your phone. It's your boss calling you to return to work. You cut the call and sigh in disappointment. That dream was just beautiful. Then it occurs to you: The current world is one big nightmare! WHAT DOES THIS MEAN Web3 is upon us. Cryptocurrencies are everywhere and blockchain infrastructure gets more sophisticated every day. Many crypto millionaires roam the earth to prove the real value of the technology. Decentralization is on its way. Below are the predictions you should know about web3; Decentralization is the future. Digital commodities e.g., NFTs, in-game items, virtual real estate, and decentralized exchange (DEX) will create a new industry. Currencies will become more globalized. Companies will become smaller and more personalized. Self-service will become the new way of operating the financial industry. 75 Stories To Learn About Datasets

A science fiction story about multisensory technologies, artificial intelligence, and the quest for authentic experiences I found the best coffee in the world while flying to the city of Cartagena. It popped up on page # 7 of the travel magazine tucked into the rear seat pocket. My taste piercing unveiled a rich flavor with medium acidity and notes of chocolate and ripe fruits. My olfactory piercing wafted out a nutty-caramel aroma. The ad managed to shake me out of the discomfort of being sandwiched between two overweight executives, and just for one moment, I had a sense of inner peace. When you get used to multisensory advertising (the coconut-scented beaches, the vanilla-smelling cars, the champagne-fragranced jewelry) you just want to leave them behind by turning the pages until you reach the juicy content. Skillfully designed advertising claims to have accomplished the amazing feat of capturing people’s attention. With the certification of Authentic In-Person Experience—the kind you couldn’t translate to a multisensory digital format —Café Castillo, located in the walled city, promised to be one of the remaining places in the world that are worth traveling to. As part of my job in the multisensory marketing industry, I’ve grown skeptical of such statements. If it hadn’t been for my psychbot, who squared away everything related to my vacation (restricting access to my inbox and IMs, picking up the destination, booking the tickets and hotel), I wouldn’t have been so keen on visiting an in-person coffee shop. I would have allowed my budgetbot to turn on the coffee machine I used at home. I doubt he would have shown up, though: my priority for happiness was higher than accumulating wealth. My psychbot would have probably blocked him out of the system. Again and again, my psychbot had proven that her decisions were more sensible than mine. Increasing her monthly budget (which is why she was able to buy the tickets without consulting me) had had a noteworthy effect on my mood, something that was verified by the decreased blood cortisol levels found in my medical record. My psychbot had increased the frequency of the samples my gloves sensors sent, so she was able to analyze the chemicals in my sweat with more accuracy. One of the best decisions my psychbot had taken was purchasing a clonebot, a simulation that smelled like me, moved like me, and thought almost like me, thanks to the computer modeling of my behavioral patterns. According to my psychbot, the relationship I had with my mother was directly related to my emotional issues. My mom expected at least five minutes of remote interaction, , which was more than enough time to lose my job. No matter how hard I’d try to explain, my mom didn’t understand the challenges of living in a hyperconnected 24–7 availability world. five minutes Clonebot was programmed to establish a connection with my mom every other day, greet her with a warm hug, and listen carefully to her monologue of health issues. The simulation, through generic conversation, made my mom think that she was talking with me when in reality she was talking to a digital copy of me. Clonebot simulated liking the food she cooked by telling her it was delicious in multiple, software-generated ways. Sometimes he’d even ask her for the 3D version of the recipe and pretend he’d print it for dinner. Although I suspected it was a win-win situation, I got solid confirmation when my mom’s doctorbot notified my psychbot that after installing my clonebot my mom’s cortisol levels were back to normal. Finding sexual partners was one of the few activities I decided to invest my time on. I had refined the search algorithm of my wingbot to only find women who were as busy as me, with no emotional attachments and sexually liberated. The interface highlighted a woman sitting four rows ahead of me. I swirled my index finger to look at every angle of her 3D representation. She was definitely in the attractive range, calculated by my wingbot based on pupil dilation, heart rate variability, and breathing patterns. While I was checking her out, I accessed the options that were available only to users who matched her attractiveness settings, including personality traits and sensory information: body odor, skin texture, and kissing style. I took my Kissenger device out of my carry-on bag and selected the last option by staring and blinking at it. Right next to me, one of the obese executives was kissing her lover goodbye, so I activated the “customize environment” option to conceal my fellow passengers. The seats looked empty as if I were alone in the plane. I joined my lips with the silicone lips of the Kissenger, but instead of the slow, sizzling kiss I was expecting from her, I felt her slurpy tongue flopping around my mouth like a fish out of water. I removed the Kissenger, stared at wingbot’s exit button, and clicked with a blink. “Do you want to add this kissing style to the list of unwanted features?” asked my wingbot before shutting down. I clicked yes with a blink. Disappointed, I looked down at the magazine on my lap. Once again, the marvelous flavor took over my tongue and nose. A Chemex coffeemaker popped-up on the page, a visual representation of the entire stock that was being advertised. The pour-over coffee accurately decreased every time someone took a sip of their cup at the coffee shop. You could see their profile images like stubborn bubbles submerged in the black liquid, and if you stared at them, you could see their reviews and pictures on social networks. I didn’t want to be biased by their opinions, so I just stared at the ad’s sharing button, clicked with a blink, and sent it to my co-workers, who were finishing their daily stand-up meeting. I wanted to see their reaction, so I decided to join the call and entered the conference room. “Aren’t you on vacation?” my boss said. “Going offline soon,” I said. “Just wanted to share this with you really quick.” At the center of the table, the Café Castillo ad popped-up. My co-workers smelled and tasted the coffee and gave themselves time to process the experience. “It’s a masterpiece!” my boss said, mesmerized by the Chemex coffeemaker, the real-time visualization, the bubble-clients. “I’ve never experienced such an engaging advertisement.” “Me neither. Actually, I’ll go visit in person to understand how they managed to simulate the flavor,” I said, right before my psychbot disconnected the call. “You’ll have a cup of coffee and that’s it,” my psychbot said, using her higher access level to intrude without my authorization. “You’re such a workaholic! It’s been six years since your last vacation.” “Help me, then,” I said. “Teach me the lost art of taking time off.” “That’s easy,” she said. “Just focus on anything other than marketing.” “Nothing comes to mind.” “Why don’t you feed Truffle?” Although the feeding process was automated by default, my psychbot set the holoprojector to interactive mode. A bell alerted Truffle it was mealtime. She went running and wagging her tail until she placed her front paws on my holo’s chest. I felt the weight of her paws in my jacket and she found support in the holo’s magnetic interface. Through my gloves, I felt the fur in her back while I petted her. After the excited greeting, Truffle sat down to wait for her food. I stared at the feeding option, clicked with a blink and the holoprojector’s hatch opened. A bowl of dog food was pushed out by the magnetic interface. Truffle ate the bowl clean before it was pulled back inside. The magnetic interface tossed a ball following the direction and strength I indicated with my gloves and Truffle caught it, brought it back to my holo, and dropped it on the floor to play again. We continued playing fetch until we got interrupted by a high-priority landing notification sent by the plane. Before getting off, I stared at the coffee ad’s ‘directions’ button and clicked with a blink. A driverless cab waited for me at the airport to take me to the Movich hotel, located in the walled city. I dropped the bags in my room and walked through narrow streets, following the blue line guiding me towards Café Castillo. I walked past striking colonial houses with flower-decorated balconies, many of them transformed into commercial properties. Given the unusual location, my touristbot came up with restaurant recommendations, tourist attractions, and beach reviews by social media friends. ID tags all over Santo Domingo plaza helped me learn more about the place: the 16th-century church at the center, the Fernando Botero statue Gertrudis (whose ass you’re supposed to touch for good luck, or so my boss said in a geonote) and the long-awaited Café Castillo, surrounded by an outdoor seating option that reminded me of classic European cafés. While waiting in line, I made my order through the interface, paid with bitcoins and a barista read the information that was displayed over my head; I guess she was looking at a 3D Chemex animation with a huge number on top indicating how many cups I requested. The barista served the order on a cup that had been previously used by 35 people, none of them in my social network. The cup asked me if I wanted to check-in. I stared at the yes option, clicked with a blink, and sat outside. I took a sip of coffee. If my coworkers were still looking at the advertising, they may have noticed my disgusted face in one of the bubbles, realizing that the experience didn’t match the one they promised me. It was just another company that had invested a large amount of money in a multisensory design that didn’t represent the reality of the product. While my taste piercing sweetened the burnt, ashy, sour notes according to my flavor settings, I thought we were living in a strange world where in-person experiences were surpassed by the digital. That gloomy realization brought me down to a daunting state that was detected and interrupted by my psychbot. “You’re thinking about marketing again,” she said. “Here’s what you have to do: inhale this salty Caribbean air, run into the ocean fully clothed, drink a cocktail in the pool. I felt the flaccid arms of an old lady through my jacket, a stranger who had stopped smiling because she was unsure if I was really her son. I sipped artificially sweetened coffee and got ready to listen to her never-ending monologue about health issues, but this time she was brief: her doctorbot had given her an estimate. She tried to change the subject by sharing the flavor and recipe of the soup she was cooking. I tried to make conversation about it, but the estimate was swirling around my head. I couldn’t stand to be there with my mom. I hugged her goodbye and tried to activate my clonebot, but I couldn’t. My psychbot had already removed it from the system. The newscasters’ voices on your transparent smart screen rouse you from a peaceful sleep on your electronic couch. You sit up, yawning widely and stretching yourself. Then, you focus your eyes on the TV as the news draws your attention. It’s business news time. The android robot lady from the (Global Decentralized Exchange System) channel is giving a real-time report on worldwide financial transactions across the (Financial internet). The biggest winners and losers in financial trading for the last hour had just been announced. GloDExSys Finternet Wow! DNC had made it to the top 10 winners again. And they are at number 1 this time. Incredible! This news was exceptional because, in the last couple of years, only blockchain corporations (i.e., blockchain banks, insurance, brokers, etc.) make it to the winners’ list as they consistently make the most profit hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly. However, they are never on the list of biggest losers. On the screen now, as it has been in the last 3 years since the big merger, the losers’ list was made up entirely of individuals - any who still dared risk much DFAs (Digital Financial Assets) to compete with the blockchain corporations in trading. “Crazy big chain!” you curse! “Trying to tie us back to them. Get them DNC!” you conclude as you pick up your (Holographic cell phone) to check out how people were reacting to this news on the (advanced social media apps that interconnect all aspects of the internet i.e., Finternet, Metaverse, web 3 and the former social network). holophone intermedia Big chain is what people have begun calling the blockchain corporations that joined the finternet to trade on GloDExSys after the big merger. Before the big merger, the finternet which is the global network of decentralized finance systems had been fully functional for 2 years and it truly democratized the finance world. People accessed this network using decentralized apps (Dapps) issued by open source DeFi groups who maintained the finternet. Individuals were the biggest winners and losers in GloDexSys trading and whenever one individual got too big, people promoted policies that limited their control of the finternet through DAOs (Decentralised Autonomous Organisations). The DeFi dream had been achieved. However, as more and more people moved their financial business to the finternet, centralized financial institutions around the world took advantage of the open-source nature of the finternet. They launched their own blockchains and Dapps which they connected to the finternet, in what was termed the big merger. People were suspicious at first, but with government backing, these institutions warmed their way in by introducing Digital Native Currencies (DiNaCs) which are digital versions of national currencies i.e., digital dollar, pounds, yen, etc. They promised that this would make the finternet more legit and valuable. So people embraced the big merger. But, within a year these blockchain corporations began showing themselves for what they really were; instruments of government control over DeFi. The problem was that these blockchain corporations alone had government permission to issue and trade DiNaCs on the finternet. Because people had to convert their cryptocurrencies into DiNaCs for business transactions in their individual countries, big chain Dapps now ruled the market and they used their DiNaCs monopoly to dominate the finternet like financial institutions once did in the centralized finance era. They also formed an international DAO of corporations (DAOC) which they used to influence policies on the finternet. The government had basically taken control of DeFi through the big chain. But people were now fighting back. People were calling for DeFi programmers around the world to take down these corporations from the finternet. More radical ones were calling for the finternet to be shut down completely and be relaunched in such a way that the corporations would never be able to join in again. They called this the great reset. No one ever said how their goal would be achieved though because, with the decentralized nature of the finternet, there was no assurance that it could possibly be shut down by any person or group. It was actually designed to be like that to avoid government control but big tech was taking advantage of that feature now. Also, shutting down the finternet would hurt people more than these corporations as they still maintained some physical infrastructure for handling the greatly reduced, but still present, hard currency transactions available. In fact, shutting down the finternet would just make them expand this physical centralised infrastructure to CeFi era size. It was beginning to seem like DeFi was finally doomed. DNC is the new face of resistance. Short for DeFi Not CeFi, it is an unknown person or group that popped up a month ago on the finternet. DNC’s page on all intermedia apps only showed the quote “Take GloDExSys, take back our finternet!”.  And this is what they were doing, or at least trying to do. Inspiring people to take on the big chain at GloDExSys. No one could explain how they were managing to challenge big chain. It was the last week of the month. Every day in the first two weeks of the month, DNC maintained its position among the top 10 traders on GloDExSys, appearing first on the 9th, then 8th, 5th, 6th, and so on. They had made it to 3rd place before suddenly disappearing entirely from GloDExSys early in the third week. No one knew what happened but everyone suspected the big chain had something to do with it. Because, if DNC maintained its presence among the top 10 GloDExSys traders, it would break the record of big chain companies exclusively dominating the GloDExSys monthly giants list, since the big merger. Even top individual traders like DeFy, BigBlucks, and CryptMojo who dominated GloDExSys before the big merger had not been able to achieve this feat, only popping up one day or two among the daily top 10 within that period. But now DNC is back and topping the chart! You say a silent prayer for them as you sweep through your holophone. First, you check your big chain Dapp. Yield farming on bank Dapps wasn’t impressing you at all. It was more stable but the rates were much lower than they used to be when it was just DeFi Dapps available. You were an expert at it. Decentralized exchange, crypto loaning, self-paying loans, metaverse trading, etc., you mastered them all. You were thriving. The big merger messed things up. Not much profit here you conclude as you exit the bank Dapp display with a wave and expand your DeFi Dapp. You check to see if your crypto profits are still there. Still impressive as it used to be but the issue is that big chain agencies have fixed the value of DiNaCs on average to be 3 to 5 times higher than that of the highest crypto. This was basically a tax on DeFi. It seemed like big chain was trying to entirely replace cryptos with DiNaCs. Some crypto coins have actually gone out of use but people have managed to keep cryptocurrencies around by doing more business on the metaverse. This wasn’t enough though as everyone eventually had to convert their crypto to DiNaCs to purchase physical goods in their countries. God help DNC you pray as you wave your crypto Dapp away. You then expand your intermedia app. DNC news is everywhere. People are rallying on their status and forums. You read one update after another. “DNC forever!” “Take back our finternet!” “Break the chain!” Looks like a revolution. One particular update draws your attention. “DeFi is lost to government and big chain control. Let’s build a free new financial system for the people. I call it distributed finance (DisFi).” It already has over ten million reposts. You smile to yourself. Seems like the world has come back full circle. What is the future of finance? In conclusion, we can make the following predictions on the future of finance based on the trends currently being observed in the finance world. Decentralized Finance (DeFi) is here to stay but it will not escape regulation. Digital commodities like NFTs, in-game items, virtual real estate, and decentralized exchange (DEX) will constitute a booming new market. Cross-chain technology is the future of the blockchain. Decentralized Applications (Dapps) are major game changers in the finance world. Self-service will become the new way of dealing with financial services. Paper money will become less and less common. Financial information will become more readily available in real-time as Artificial Intelligence is applied in the field.
