For Windows and macOS users, Docker Desktop has been the main way to use Docker containers for many years. While it remains a viable and usable option for hobbyists and small development teams, recent pricing changes for larger user bases sent people looking for alternatives. I am not looking to replace Docker Desktop myself, but I was interested in trying the alternatives and seeing how they compared. Video version of this post You can find a video version of this post with more hands-on using each tool coverage on YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C88x0ZnUEqc?embedable=true Terminology Containers themselves are not a new concept in technology, but Docker back in the mid-2000s popularised the concept and marketed them the right way at the right time to bring the concept into the mainstream. It’s worth separating Docker the company from Docker the project as it’s easy to confuse them and they are distinct entities. Due to this confusion, Docker the company renamed and open-sourced a lot of its container-related technologies, contributing to what is now known as the “ ”(OCI). Open Container Initiative I am abstracting and summarising a lot here, but when the rest of this post refers to “OCI compliant” containers and terms like it, then think of it as analogous to what you might think of as a “Docker container”. All of these events and changes actually happened some time ago in technology time, but still, it’s a constant source of confusion. Tldr… All of the options featured in this post can run the same container definitions and this includes your pre-existing containers from Docker Desktop or created with a . Another note, often projects refer to containers running with Docker as “dockerd” and “Moby” interchangeably. Dockerfile 1. Podman Probably the most popular alternative, has many contributors from Red Hat and as it appears that Red Hat are planning commercial versions of Podman, it may be safe to say it’s a “Red Hat project”. Podman It’s available for Windows, macOS, and Linux and like many of the other tools featured here, follows similar syntax to Docker with two caveats: By default you use instead of Docker, but you can create an alias and forget about that command change. podman Docker Desktop by default assumes that you want to use container images from the Docker hub, whereas all other alternatives understandably don’t make that assumption. This means you need to specify the full path to many images you may use regularly, for example, “ ”. docker.io/library/busybox One of the key differences between Podman and the other alternatives featured here, including Docker Desktop, is that it’s daemonless. This means that every running container runs as its own runtime process, not via one daemon. If the Docker daemon fails, all running containers fail, whereas with Podman, only the individual container fails. That said, i have personally never had the Docker daemon fail, but I am not running production workloads. Like all other tools here, on first run, Podman needs to create a virtual machine on macOS and Windows to host the containers. Increasingly on macOS and Windows this isn’t always necessary, but for maximum cross-platform (and architecture) compatibility, it makes sense. Podman uses Fedora CoreOS (there’s that red Hat connection again) and QEMU to run the VM. Podman desktop The graphical companion to Podman is , but in theory it should list images and containers created by other runtimes, inc. Like many of the other graphical tools, it also adds features for interacting with Kubernetes, but I will look at those in a future post. It offers may of the same features as Docker Desktop, including features I didn’t realise followed any standards, such as extensions, but is a little less polished and lacks some of the OS-specific features that Docker Desktop offers. Podman Desktop 2. Colima Only available for Linux and macOS, uses to enable Linux VMs on macOS. It supports Docker, Containerd, and Kubernetes runtimes, and in all cases you need to install that runtime alongside Colima. In the case of Docker on macOS, this is not completely the same as Docker Desktop. Colima Lima As simple as Colima is to use, the fact you still need to install a runtime alongside it made me wonder “what is Colima?”, and to be honest, the minimal documentation doesn’t make it any clearer. The tagline is “Container runtimes on macOS (and Linux) with minimal setup”, but that still doesn’t clarify to me why I need it. As far as I can tell, the main reasons are for using containerd or as a Kubernetes backend (instead of Docker Dkestop, minikube etc.) and maybe the main reason for Docker support is backwards compatibility. 3. Rancher desktop While it mostly bills itself as a Kubernetes management tool, also offers some container management features outside of Kubernetes. It supports containers running with containerd or Docker and offers most of the same features as the other graphical tools on this list. Again, QEMU provides the VM that everything runs on, with no option to change that. It’s a perfectly decent tool, and one of the more mature alternatives, but I tend find it needed to restart and reset the VM a lot when you made changes, which got a little tedious. Rancher Desktop 4. VMWare Fusion If you already use VMWare Fusion for running Windows and Linux VMs, . However, the feature currently only works with Intel-based Macs, despite the installer still installing the CLI tool and giving you false hope. it also supports containers 5. Parallels Again, if you already own and use for Linux and Windows VMs, then you can use it as a backend for minikube, which is mostly aimed at Kubernetes usage, but it’s container-adjacent, so I include it as kind of an option. Parallels Desktop What I use For now, as an individual contributor, I am happy with Docker Desktop, and I like the extra features it offers for more performant and seamless integration with the host operating system. If something changed to disincentivise people like me too, then I would likely switch to Podman, perhaps with Podman Desktop, it will depend on the project’s state at that time. What about you?

Be ready to be humble Humility is touted as a desirable trait in one's personal life, but as it turns out, being humble fits into the entrepreneurial scene as well. Most freight operators today don’t need to be persuaded in the importance of technologies. At the same time, freight transportation still languishes on the way to automation. The reasons lie both in the complexity of the industry and the lack of digital awareness. When it comes to the digitization of logistics, common ideas are mostly located on two poles: on one hand, technologization is viewed just as a chance to minimize paperwork and phone calls. Another extremity is represented by latest contraptions, such as driverless trucks and cargo drones. Whereas for the majority of freight operators their pressing issues are somewhere in the middle — and so are the IT solutions for their business. It allows minimization of manual documentation delivery thus saving loads of time. 2. Transparency Transparency is the biggest customer demand for cargo companies today. Customers want to know where their delivery is at any time. Tracking cargo relocation is also important for the fleet manager: it is the basis for providing accurate information about estimated time of arrival and re-routing if necessary. There exist two types of vehicle location tracking: cellular and satellite. Cellular tracking uses driver’s cell phone location based on cell tower data. GPS tracking is the checkup of location via global positioning system. The technology recognizes longitude, latitude, ground speed, and course direction of the vehicle. Both types of tracking can be integrated into your software so that you can see cargo location on a map with the help of geographic information system (GIS). Data stored on the server may be accessed from a mobile app both by the drivers and by the dispatchers. 3. Velocity Speed is not a bonus anymore. More and more clients of cargo companies consider it a must-have and want their shipping to be provided in several days. And though cargo hyperloop is still a bit of pipe dream, digitization of logistics already brings in certain enhancements. Keeping delivery on time implies not only thorough route development but the ability to react quickly in case of unforeseen circumstances. Technology ensuring faster decision making provides important value to transportation. A web-based logistic service quickly analyzes the base of available vehicles, enhances scheduling and minimizes shipment downtime. Embedded GPS warns about traffic jams and road repairs via Google or Yandex Maps. Apps like Trucker Path also facilitate transportation process by providing information about stops, gas stations, navigation and so on. 4. Security Safety and security have been freight forwarders’ concern for many years, but recently security has become an overriding issue. You can keep an eye on freight during transportation with the help of TMS and monitoring devices. Useful options here include electronic seals and geofencing. Electronic seals are high-alert devices which send an instant alert to the security team if a container or a transport vehicle seals are breached. Geofencing is a software feature that uses GPS or radio frequency identification to set an invisible perimeter around a specific geographic location. A geofence can be placed around the route that the vehicle is intended to follow. If it strays, a wireless alert is generated by the mobile device and an alarm is triggered in the corresponding software application. The forwarders can also benefit from using mobile applications like Trucker App or CoPilot Live Truck which are built around driving community. They warn drivers about unexpected conditions, propose safe and reliable truck-legal routes on the basis of vehicle size, weight, and load type and help to create custom route profiles for easy switching between vehicles. 5. Human Factor Unless you are a lucky possessor of an autonomous fleet, human interaction will always stay an issue for you. Indeed, these are drivers who you trust your business to when on road. The three points managers encounter here include driver shortage and retention, job performance and meeting «compliance, safety, accountability» regulations. Indeed, much discussion in community development circles focuses on the sources of housing funds, such as Section 8. Keep reading to learn what tools you can and should employ when dealing with long-running hard-to-fix problems. You may be guarded by countless levels of the corporate hierarchy, but eventually, you will either be asked to debug a production issue or you will be in a job that will require it. This article is aimed primarily at software engineers but also QAs, managers, leads, and solution engineers. How Does an Issue Reach You? You get an invite to a call, and you’re tagged in a Jira ticket, on Slack, or DM’ed. Ok, cool. Someone is asking you to drop a feature you’ve been working on, switch context, and help. Annoying, I know. Give yourself 90 seconds to grieve and move on. If someone is asking you for urgent help with a production issue, they mean it. Before you start, make sure your direct superior/manager/leas knows you are switching priorities. And if you start investigating, make sure everyone knows it, so other people are not wasting time doing the same. As you’ll see, comms are the key. If you need to parse some files and you are opening tens of them and looking for clues - create a small JS website that will help you extract the right information. Mini-tools will help you move faster and you won’t need to repeat the same work. Of course, make them only when it is necessary. At many projects of mine, these tools later became a part of regular testing and development processes. Someone should schedule a meeting with all of the people involved in the work and prepare a document, later distributed to everyone interested.
