Blockchains bring many promises for industries worldwide. But one of the biggest challenges they face is the inability to communicate and interoperate with each other. This creates multiple a network of high potential applications and platforms that are siloed within their own blockchain ecosystems. There are many projects currently working to solve the interoperability challenge, and Moonbeam is leading the charge in that aspect, allowing projects to easily deploy cross-chain platforms. For the seventh part of Unhashed, I sent out a few questions to Derek Yoo, the CEO of , to explore more about interoperability and how Moonbeam is making seamless interoperability a reality. Moonbeam Q1. How did you first get introduced to blockchain and crypto and what inspired you to work in this space? And what’s the story behind building Moonbeam? Before founding PureStake in 2019, I previously co-founded and served as CTO for a company called Fuze. I had led that company for ten years with my co-founder, Steve Kokinos, who eventually left to become CEO of a blockchain company called Algorand. This sparked my interest in blockchain and cryptocurrency, and I researched it to learn as much as I could. In 2019, I founded PureStake with a focus on blockchain infrastructure, and have always been drawn to the idea of multi-chain and the corresponding importance of cross-chain connectivity. As we evaluated new blockchains for expansion of our infrastructure services, it became pretty clear that Polkadot was onto something, both in terms of technology and community. We see Polkadot as the future of interoperability, and their vision for a network of blockchains is extremely powerful. As we became more ingrained in this ecosystem, we realized that there was an opportunity for a project to serve as an easy on-ramp to this growing network, and nobody seemed to be thinking about this in the same way. So we created Moonbeam, which is a fully Ethereum-compatible blockchain that is part of the Polkadot ecosystem. It has Polkadot-native implementations of all of the key Ethereum technologies such as the EVM and Web3 RPC. The idea here is to eliminate some of the hurdles that developers face when expanding to new chains, and to make it much simpler both upfront and on an ongoing basis to deploy one set of smart contracts to many blockchains at the same time. And by being part of Polkadot we are also able to offer native cross-chain integration capabilities — something that other Ethereum-like blockchains can’t offer. Q2. The lack of interoperability in blockchains is a major hurdle in the path to blockchain adoption. Why is it such a huge issue for blockchains to communicate data with each other? Can you explain with examples how lack of interoperability impacts the adoption of blockchain? Scalability and the growing need to find available blockspace are the driving force behind the increasingly multi-chain environment we find today. Blockchains are traditionally islands onto themselves, isolated from other chains.  So you have this splintering of users and assets across different chains happening today, which is a challenge for blockchain adoption. For developers, when they choose to deploy on any given blockchain, they are foregoing the ability to serve users and assets on all other chains.  For end-users, they need to understand a lot about which underlying blockchain they are interacting with, and how that blockchain works, leading to a poor user experience when compared with web2 UX. We believe that cross-chain interoperability is the key element of a solution to both of these problems. Q3. What are the potential methods to solve this lack of inherent interoperability of blockchains and how can developers ensure that their applications can function across multiple blockchains? Interoperability requires standards. The fact of the matter is that Ethereum — along with the Ethereum technology stack and developer toolchain — is the de-facto standard when it comes to the development of blockchain-based applications. It has been around the longest, it has the widest developer adoption, and it has the greatest number of tools and services built around it.  This includes core components like the EVM, and also supporting services like MetaMask, Truffle, TheGraph, and many other Ethereum development tools. 4 The protocol standards that have built on top of Ethereum such as ERC20 and ERC721 are also the de-facto standards and have really fueled the growth of DeFi on Ethereum and other chains. As a developer, if you want to build an interoperable application that can be deployed to a variety of blockchains, your best bet is to develop using the Ethereum technology stack and standards. Q4. Many developers are currently focusing on deploying applications that function across the three largest smart contract blockchains — Ethereum, Binance Smart Chain, and Polkadot. How does Moonbeam ensure seamless cross-chain deployment of these applications? Moonbeam is an Ethereum-compatible developer platform targeted to Ethereum and Solidity devs. We aim to provide the easiest development environment and the richest set of developer integrations on Polkadot. By making it easy for developers to build on Moonbeam, we are able to attract and onboard new and existing applications to the Polkadot ecosystem very quickly. Teams that are pursuing a multi-chain deployment strategy are largely implementing their application using the Ethereum tech stack.  This allows them to deploy to Ethereum and Ethereum-like chains such as BSC.  Moonbeam, given its full Ethereum compatibility, is the natural destination for Polkadot-based multi-chain deployments. Q5. The recent spike in developers’ interest to deploy their applications across these three blockchains seems to be coming from Ethereum’s lack of scalability and spiking gas. Do you think either BSC or Polkadot can replace Ethereum as the top smart contract blockchain? Why? The goal isn’t to replace Ethereum, but to have many blockchains that are each specialized for different use cases. In some instances, the current fees and scalability constraints may be just fine for a project given the type and frequency of transactions. In other instances, projects may need a high volume of low-cost transactions or a high degree of flexibility and autonomy over the architecture of their chain. Polkadot in particular is designed for this: heterogeneous sharding allows many varied blockchains to share security (and users, and assets) with the main Relay Chain. That creates a situation where projects have many viable options and are able to choose an environment that makes sense for their use case.  In general we believe that developers will continue to pursue multi-chain deployments across Ethereum, BSC, and Polkadot. Q6. Moonbeam is a parachain on the Polkadot network. What’s the reason behind choosing Polkadot over other blockchain networks that offer similar functionalities? The most important reason we are building on Polkadot is the developer activity we see there.  Outside of Ethereum, Polkadot is the most active ecosystem in terms of developers. Given that we are building a developer-oriented platform, we need to go to where the developers and builders are. And Polkadot offers more of a greenfield opportunity vs Ethereum, where there is a more mature and established ecosystem. The Substrate and Polkadot technology stack was another important factor. Substrate is a Rust-based blockchain development framework that helped us build Moonbeam much faster than if we had built it from scratch.  We were drawn to Polkadot based on its vision of cross-chain integration. We believe the design of Polkadot and its built-in cross-chain capabilities will lend itself to new kinds of native cross-chain applications in the future. We envision Moonbeam as ultimately being an integration hub on Polkadot, helping developers easily create Polkadot-native multi-chain applications which will be much more scalable than the dApps you see today. Q7. Apart from interoperability, what other hurdles do you think DeFi and blockchain have on their path to mass adoption, and what potential solutions are being developed to tackle them? Coming from the Web2 space, I still believe there are big challenges in terms of end-user experience for Web3 applications that need to be improved before large-scale mass adoption can happen. With multi-chain deployments and applications, this UX can be even more challenging. One thing I believe is that every day end users need higher levels of abstraction. As a user, you shouldn’t need to know the underlying technical details about how a blockchain works in order to use it. Connecting MetaMask to different chains, being prompted to sign certain kinds of low-level transactions are not things that regular users have a mental model for. MetaMask has recently added more features to help transition users between chains by automating the addition of new networks and I think their snaps extension system will provide important UX improvement opportunities for developers. Ethereum is the De-facto Standard for Blockchain Apps - Unhashed #7

A long time ago our gadgets learned to monitor our health and give a signal about a problem if there is any. Synchronization of gadget signals and data on patients’ physical history is our immediate future that is intended to simplify the diagnostics and monitoring of changes in the condition of clinics’ care recipients. Currently, many clinics are not only unable to get information from the patient’s gadgets but also have information systems of doubtful suitability for use in the near future. No need to reinvent the wheel An owner of a private clinic aiming to fuze the bases of two healthcare information systems (HIS) into one contacted us. Two institutions using different systems for patient accounting and data processing were to be merged. Each clinic had developed its system on its own account over 7 years ago. The leadership of the new fuzed medical center was content with both systems, and it was up to us to decide which one to eliminate. Our main goal was to save the most valuable data. For business it was the client base, for doctors, it was the history of the patients’ visits and treatment. The two programs were very similar in terms of functionality, but under the hood, in the bases, there was nothing in common. We decided not to reinvent the wheel on the basis of two old ones but to put everything into a new base to which we adapted one of the two reception desks. We based it upon the existing and actively developing HL7 FHIR standard of medical information processing. In favor of it, we can count the fact that Apple Inc. creates its healthcare apps with FHIR and Microsoft also offers integration with its services through FHIR. FHIR for clinical data HL7 is a standard for the exchange, management, and integration of electronic medical information. Its development was started in the USA as early as in 1987 by Health Level Seven nonprofit organization. The word “seven” in its name is a reference to the seventh level of the open system interconnection reference model. The standard has had three versions, and the FHIR standard (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources standard) is a brand new version developed from scratch with due account for the current level of information technologies. The essence of the standard is that it describes the formats of medical data and all the necessary things that can happen to the data. The clinic leadership is fully aware that for now they just saved the client base and important medical information, compartmentalizing everything like in a medicine store. But even the simple HIS meeting the standard is enough to make headway. If you want to move to another system — you are welcome, the standard allows it. If you want mobile applications and data from gadgets — we will check the API and plug everything in. If you want interaction with a lab, HL7 FHIR has everything you need for that. Gaining insight on HIS Having delivered the work we contemplated the fact that our client was not the only case. How compatible are the healthcare information systems currently present in the market? Are they capable of giving away their data and receive data from others, is this data hard to access because of the too tight grip of the HIS? We made a list of 52 companies that offer developments to Russian clinics and asked them whether their products employed the HL7 standard. 10 companies confirmed the presence of the standard, and 14 acknowledged its absence. Two companies remarked with regret that the standard had not been implemented and told us they were going to start moving in that direction next year. One company replied: “Most likely, it is not used”, the other one said: “Our system has not undergone HL7 FHIR certification”. The rest of the companies did not answer our question. Moreover, quite a number of those latter companies had rather fresh-looking websites making the impression that the companies were working. We can make only a superficial assessment of the number of clinics working with HIS that do not employ the information exchange standards. As judged by advertisements of software companies on their websites, there are hundreds of such institutions all over the country. What is in store for HIS users In all likelihood, currently, private clinics do not create mass demand for information exchange between different systems, and the institutions use what they have; and, therefore, little attention is paid to data interchange standards in healthcare. In many countries unified healthcare information systems are created, into which Healthcare Standards Integration standards are integrated. Interaction with the standards is likely to become mandatory for clinics. Developers are often recommended to stick to HL7. The development and launch of those systems will take place in the years to come. If then the doctor says “Sorry, I do not have access to your electronic card”, it is likely to become a total fiasco for private clinics. Probably, large HIS developers will rewrite their products and provide their users with new versions thereof compatible with health data exchange applications. Clinics that developed their own HIS will have to look for development teams. When the need becomes urgent, the satisfaction will be pricy. We believe that clinic owners should take the efforts made by the developers towards open source FHIR implementations into consideration and think about steps to make in the years to come. Some are legitimate projects, while others are not. The potential once in a lifetime opportunity in crypto attracts a lot of attention from the good, the bad and the ugly. If the 90’s internet was compared to the Wild West, then crypto takes it one step further, and having an award-winning and responsible technology, business and economic team behind a blockchain and crypto project is imperative. CEO's are fascinating people, and blockchain CEO's are some of the most interesting people I have met, including Algorand's Founder MIT Professor Silvio Macali. They have been generous with their time and knowledge and have a driving desire to bring socially transforming technology to fruition. I was impressed at Silvio’s ability to make complex computer science accessible, and the business and developer materials available at the Algorand Foundation are an excellent place for anyone to start learning about Algorand and their pioneering blockchain technology. In my opinion, the Algorand team have stayed consistent with the social ethos for deploying blockchain foundational technology, and the hope at making the future of money accessible to all. Mass adoption Although the hype around the potential of our industry has yet to be fulfilled, many experts in blockchain and crypto believe the turning point of mainstream adoption is growing near — but certain problems must be solved first. A major hurdle to the true adoption of blockchain infrastructure and architecture is the looming “Blockchain Trilemma” — an industry-acknowledged truism when it comes solving all three problems of security, scalability, and decentralization. Currently, even the most sophisticated blockchain projects have only managed to address a maximum of two of the three problems for a public and permissionless blockchain. One way Algorand aims to make mass adoption easier is by using drastically less computing resources than other cryptocurrencies… “There’s very little computational power requires…a microsecond basically,” says Kokinos What Makes Algorand Different? Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Litecoin have led the way in crypto adoption. Algorand is hoping to be part of the next generation of crypto, and offers a scalable solution as well as solving the problem of the Blockchain Trilemma. As shared by Steve Kokinos to CryptoBeadles, one of the biggest differences between Algorand and other options is… “At a simple level there are no miners, and it’s proof of stake.” Let’s take a deeper look at the key differences of Algorand compared to other projects in the space... Pure Proof of Stake While not the first crypto to use pure proof of stake, many believe the future of blockchain technology is proof of stake, as it provides improved efficiencies on transaction times. Pure proof of stake represents a significant upgrade compared to the proof of work model by requiring far fewer energy-consuming resources and presents a much safer alternative to proof of work. No Miners Again, Algorand has no miners and uses a random selection process for confirming transactions. A random lottery selection is used to determine who is responsible for confirming each transaction, it increases the safety of the network because bad attackers have no idea who to “attack.” Through user replaceability, the entire block procedure is performed without anyone but the user knowing they are selected. This significantly reduces the chance of bad actors attacking the network, as it’s virtually impossible for them to know where to attack. If a bad actor does decide to attack the chain, it’s already too late and they cannot benefit from their actions. Simple programming language Algorand was built with scalability in mind. The code is robust and designed to be an easy build for new users and crypto professionals alike. Using the programming language “Go” makes it an accessible programming language for developers. The more people around the world that can participate in building the future of Algorand the more inclusive the technology becomes. Dutch auction Algorand has implemented Dutch auctions for their coin release (Algos) making it easy for anyone to become an Algo holder, Algorand is working to create a truly decentralized crypto by releasing tokens into the economy over the next 5 years. Their first Dutch auction was held in June 2019 and ensured that all participants of the coin offering paid the same price for the Algo tokens. For crypto to be widely adopted, it must be inclusive by nature, allowing anyone with an interest to be involved in the projects of their choice. Algorand designed their technology to be inclusive and fair from the start. Self-Selection via Verifiable Random Function (VRF) Algorand aims to achieve their vision by relying on self-selection and user replaceability. As noted by Algorand... “The selection of users to participate in the certification of blocks using the VRF is done randomly and secretly, without any communication among the users. Since executing this procedure requires a user’s private key, no one except for that user knows whether they were selected… by the time an adversary realizes that a user is selected, it is too late for them to benefit from an attack; the user has already sent their message and fulfilled their responsibility in the consensus protocol.” What next… With dozens of powerful and practical use cases in business, academia and music! I recently spoke with Lingo Co-Founder & CEO, HM Rawat, about the potential impact of Web3 on community empowerment. In our conversation, we also touched on the uniqueness of Web3 rewards, its challenges, and how a novel approach could shape the industry. I hope you find the discussion insightful. Tell us a bit about yourself and how you got into Web3. From selling MP3 CDs at school to exiting Mauritius’s fastest-growing Subway franchisee chain of 12+ restaurants, I’ve been an entrepreneur all my life. Heading marketing and sales at HMRawat Communications, our family business, was a milestone in my journey. During my time there, we secured over 80% of Mauritius’s mobile phone market share and achieved a 300x YoY revenue growth for the Madagascar unit. The Seychelles unit also saw a 1500x growth. Now, I’m applying all the lessons I learned over 30 years to build and scale Lingo. It’ll help fill Web3’s marketing gaps—the reason I entered this space. While the underlying tech is growing 2x faster than the Internet in the 90s, it’s not transforming as many lives as it can. Loyalty schemes feature heavily in Web2’s attract-extract models. How are Web3 rewards different? The global loyalty management market was roughly $10.5 billion in 2023. It’ll possibly grow at over 9% till 2030. But consumers will only get a tiny share of this revenue, as usual. Web2 loyalty schemes are extractive because they work within walled gardens owned and controlled by centralized entities. Consumers mostly receive points or token money that have limited redeemability. You can use them at partner stores only, for example. Web3 rewards, on the contrary, can put real value in the consumer’s hands. Consumers can trade loyalty tokens in secondary markets or exchange them with their friends. That’s the power of interoperability. Plus, on-chain revenue models are usually transparent and verifiable, enhancing accountability. Have Web3 rewards evolved fully? If not, what are its main challenges? No. Lingo will take Web3 rewards over the line but there’s still a long way to go. Inferior design and sub-par incentives are the main problems. The inability to sustain rewards and engage communities long-term is a key reason why over 72% of projects from the 2020-2021 bull market have died. Web3 projects typically have Ponzinomics for economic models. They constantly need to onboard new users to maintain rewards, etc. This is very dangerous in volatile, cyclical markets like crypto. It’s also unsustainable. Moreover, Web3 rewards don’t have enough real-world utility yet. They’re even inferior to centralized Web2 rewards in some ways. Meaning, communities don’t have the incentives to stay loyal long-term. Speculation and frothy practices are more prevalent instead. How does Lingo solve these problems? From selling MP3 CDs at school to exiting Mauritius’s fastest-growing Subway franchisee chain of 12+ restaurants, I’ve been an entrepreneur all my life. Heading marketing and sales at HMRawat Communications, our family business, was a milestone in my journey. During my time there, we secured over 80% of Mauritius’s mobile phone market share and achieved a 300x YoY revenue growth for the Madagascar unit. The Seychelles unit also saw a 1500x growth. Now, I’m applying all the lessons I learned over 30 years to build and scale Lingo. It’ll help fill Web3’s marketing gaps—the reason I entered this space. That’s the power of interoperability. Plus, on-chain revenue models are usually transparent and verifiable, enhancing accountability. Have Web3 rewards evolved fully? Connecting Web3 Rewards To Real-World Assets - A Discussion With HM Rawat

Leading brand consultant and esteemed author of Designing Brand Identity, Alina Wheeler, is famously quoted as saying “Design is intelligence made visible”. This statement truly captures the multifaceted world of design, which must create synergy between business goals, financial margins, and the overall UX. Lidong Liu is an experienced product designer who has combined the talent of a natural eye with a deep understanding of technology in order to showcase the brilliance of his projects. The first spark of inspiration Lidong Liu has always had a passion for music and, at the age of eight, he got his first personal music player – an Apple Shuffle. As he began using the device, he noticed how easily songs could be uploaded and noted the ability for both sequential and random playing order. Although it was fundamentally a simple concept, he was fascinated by the design of this product that took care of its user’s needs by appropriately leveraging modern technology. Not only that, it did so without placing any burden on the user to understand the technology behind its seamless operations. It was then that Liu started to really consider and study the connection between people and technology. From this spark of inspiration, he began to experiment with own unique creations. During his time in secondary school, Liu designed and produced a few short films and also a handful of websites. Many of his products won recognition and awards at his school, and he was further motivated after seeing the joy and excitement that his creations brought to the broader online community. He had no doubt that this was his path in life and decided to pursue his passion post-secondary, earning his B.E. in Software Engineering from Shanghai’s Tongji University. Making his mark in the industry before graduation During his time at Tongji, Liu made some great connections and began playing with business ideas and products. Interestingly, music was once again at the core of his inspiration – this time for an app that he designed and developed with two friends, which would make big waves in China. Zuiyan was officially launched in 2017. The music mobile app was created to showcase Beijing Opera in a modern and engaging format. Liu initially touched on the concept thanks to his grandmother who, like many others in her generation, loves to watch and perform the art form as a primary source of entertainment. He had spoken with his grandmother about her grief around this dwindling element of her cultural heritage, as she noticed the younger generations were not interested in Beijing Opera. After contemplating what he could do to reinvigorate the interest of his people, Liu decided to use cartoon illustrations, audio clips, and state-of-the-art Augmented Reality techniques to present live Beijing Opera in people’s hands – anytime and anywhere. The app also boasted a highly-engaging feature that allowed users to recreate and retell the stories of this traditional art form, based on their own understanding, to share with others. Thanks to its unique presentation and innovative techniques, Zuiyan took home the first place prize from the Mobile Application Innovation Contest, beating out over 400 other teams from mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. As the competition was organized by the Ministry of Education of China and Apple, the app was then featured on the Apple App Store in 2018 and hit over 20K downloads in just three months. It was such a hit that several major media platforms in China – the likes of China Daily, Tencent, Sohu, etc. – reported about Liu and his app. Noticing the impact of his work, Apple then invited Liu to the 2018 Apple Worldwide Developer Conference for an all-expenses-paid opportunity to showcase his product in front of a notable group of attendees, including Isabel Ge Mahe, Apple’s Vice President and Managing Director of Greater China. The event also led to the mention of Liu as an innovative developer and influencer in the industry in Apple’s China corporate social responsibility (CSR) report. Although he was only on the brink of truly stepping into his career, Liu was already gaining an impressive reputation. Music is his muse After graduation, Lidong Liu was fortunate to explore the field with a few design internships, first in China and then in the US. Interning in California with the Arm Treasure Data product, a tool for data engineering and marketing from SoftBank, gave Liu the opportunity to really dive into complex and enterprise-facing design. He worked with Fortune 500 clients and Global 2000 companies like LG, Nintendo, and Warner Bros. Even during the short time that he was with Arm, Liu’s unique design perspectives added significant value to the company and a few months later, the product that he contributed to won the Frost & Sullivan award for Global Customer Data Platform Company of the Year. Over the next couple of years, Liu’s life saw massive expansion. He was awarded maximum scholarships to complete his Master of Science degree in Human-Computer Interactions at Indiana University. From there, he was elated to circle back around to his passion for music and, in June of 2020, he began working as a product designer for the world-renowned platform, Spotify. Liu has led several projects with Spotify that have not only improved the UX and added millions of dollars in revenue to the company, but that have also helped artists and labels to profit through the support of their fans and listeners. He has brought his design talents to the user authorization system, helping to ensure its understandability, efficiency and ease of use in different user situations. He led the core design of the customer support platform, which optimizes multiple internal Spotify tools of the listener app with Spotify for Artists, and other components, to provide a better and more consistent system experience. According to Liu, the most rewarding work he’s done with the company is in particular with Spotify for Artists, as he holds such deep respect for the work of musicians. In this branch of the company, he led the core design of platform capabilities for the paid Marquee ads – a marketing campaign tool for music promotion. He also drove the core design of 2-step verification user onboarding and education, ensuring that the new feature would be well adopted by all Spotify for Artist users, while ensuring the protection of their account security, such as their sensitive music data reports, public profiles, and payment information. Finally, as the current design owner of the overall analytics experience, Liu is optimizing the holistic navigation experience for data consumption and social sharing. The improvements will allow artists and labels to gather more accurate and timely insights based on their tasks and data maturity. In looking to the future of his work at Spotify, Liu explains: “Helping music creators to succeed has always been my top goal, and I believe improving the music data experience will be my next breakthrough point. The ongoing digital revolution in the music industry brings tremendous opportunities, but it also means that music creators need to collect, consume, and digest more data so that they can better cultivate fandom and generate revenue.” The reality is that the success of an artist in our modern world requires them to use data to learn what people are listening to and how they’re spending their money in the music industry. When the right information is used in the right way, creators can streamline and uniquely personalize the experiences that they offer their tech savvy music fans. This is exactly why, as the largest music streaming service in the world, Spotify plays such a vital role. It contains, by far, the most first-hand user listening data and is capable of feeding it directly back into the industry. In reflection on his own position, Liu shares “Standing at the core of this bottom-up loop, I am a designer who can help to democratize music, ensuring the information is presented and interpreted for the good of both the artists and the fans. In such a dynamic work-stream, there is no once-and-for-all solution, but continuous iterations. Leading the holistic data experience design of Spotify for Artists is [a huge project that] I’m thrilled about. I truly believe that it will be my next milestone of bringing digital innovation to the world of music.” Lidong Liu clearly approaches his design work from a place of deep intelligence. His ability to zoom out, pick up all the dots and details, and then fuze them together into a successful and functional design is unmatched. With Liu, there is no need to sacrifice usability for appearance, or efficiency for cost. He has an incredible talent for manipulating technology to do it all, and for that very reason, the future of this young, yet highly accomplished, product designer is incredibly bright.

Leading Product Designer Lidong Liu Proves Core Of Brilliant Design Is Intelligence Made Visible

Capcom has pumped out several excellent Monster Hunter titles over the years. Also, the fact that very few Monster Hunter games score below 80 on Metacritic certainly speaks volumes to how much the franchise is loved. Despite fan and critical praise for the series, I was curious to know in what order the games take the cake. The best way to do this is by looking at the top ten games, in the Monster Hunter series, with the highest metascores. What is a Metascore? Metascores are number scores used by Metacritic to rank the critical success of different types of media. The scores are determined by the opinions of critical reviews and users’ ranking of the game on a scale of 1-10. So, the metascores take both sides of video game criticism into account. List of the Best Monster Hunter Games My list starts from the lowest metascore and works up to the Monster Hunter game with the highest metascore. Metacritic does not have one listing for a game, however. For instance, a game can be available across different consoles and can be ranked more than once on the Metacritic list. I have compiled my list with only one listing for each game; therefore, a game on the list ranked more than once on Metacritic will appear only once here. 10) Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin - Metascore: 82 This spinoff series of the Monster Hunter franchise offers a similar experience to the regular RPG gameplay found in the main series, but there are a few differences to keep in mind. , it contains a turn-based battle system. It can get a little monotonous, but I can say that strengthening your monsties and reaping the rewards through turn-based combat is majorly satisfying in the end. One , it’s nice to take on the role of a rider instead of a hunter. Because a rider needs the power of “kinship” with a monstie to succeed in battles, it quickly becomes obvious that . Searching for monstie eggs and combining powerful gene sets to create the ultimate monstie is something that makes this game so fun. Players directly influence how difficult the game is for them by how powerful their monsties are, so there’s a lot to work for in the end. Two egg hunting is an essential part of gameplay The story itself takes players on an adventure across different environments where they make friends and enemies as they uncover the mystery behind the glowing pits found all over the land. There’s also the matter of unraveling the mystery of whether the main monstie, Ratha, possesses the Wings of Ruin, but I’m not delving into spoiler territory. Needless to say, Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin has rightfully earned a place among the best monster hunter games list. Available on: Nintendo Switch and PC 9) Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate - Metascore: 82 This is an expansion pack for the Monster Hunter Tri Wii game (which I’ll get to in a minute). Ultimate adds tons of features and even replaces a few found in Tri - there’s a lot to unpack. Basically, the expansion added to the online and local wireless gaming experience and brought back other gameplay options, such as weapons and map areas, found in other titles, especially Monster Hunter Portable 3rd. However, most of the major features added had a lot to do with the tech side of the game. Target camera, bottom touch-sensitive screen (it’s for the Nintendo 3DS), and it was the first game in the franchise to have dynamic shadows; this simply means that the shadows look like the shape that casts them. One can see why this expansion would rank in the top ten. Available on: Nintendo Wii U and Nintendo 3DS 8) Monster Hunter Tri - Metascore: 84 Tri is kind of a big deal in a lot of ways. Not only did it serve as the Monster Hunter franchise debut title on the Nintendo Wii, but it also brought a lot of new features to the gameplay. Some of these features can no longer be accessed, such as Wii Speak capabilities, but it was the first Monster Hunter game to feature it, so that’s cool. Online and offline multiplayer options were where this game really shined and is why it’s considered one of the best Monster Hunter games. Both cooperative modes allowed players to join a hunting party of up to four players. Otherwise, players can choose to pursue the single-player hunting experience with Cha-Cha, an AI hunting partner. As for the plot, players are tasked with helping Moga Village from threatening monsters nearby. Basically, the overall goal of the game is to hunt monsters and collect monster parts to progress and grow stronger - ya know, the usual Monster Hunter gameplay. Available on: Nintendo Wii U, Nintendo 3DS, and Nintendo Wii 7) Monster Hunter Generations - Metascore: 85 Generations had something new to offer with its new special attacks and combat styles, but especially with the introduction of playable Felyne characters; Felynes were simply companions in other franchise entries. Armor plays a huge role in this game, too, because players have the chance to mold their armor into something different using collectibles, such as ore or monster parts. Hunting Arts was also a new addition to the game. It required players to charge up the moves before they could be activated. Hunting Arts is similar to how kinship skills work in Wings of Ruin - this franchise really likes the idea of making players wait to use powerful attacks. Generations also introduced Hunting Styles, where weapons contain their own battle effects and forms. New monsters were added along with past popular monsters from other games in the franchise. Generations has the right mix of familiar and new, creating another top Monster Hunter game for sure. Available on: Nintendo Switch and Nintendo 3DS 6) Monster Hunter Freedom Unite - Metascore: 86 Now enters the first game in the franchise to be available on iOS. Freedom Unite serves as an expansion of Monster Hunter Freedom 2, as it had more missions to complete, monsters to fight, and equipment to choose from. It also placed importance on Felynes by adding a Felyne fighter companion and downloadable content to customize its armor and unlock its skills. The game’s gameplay followed the same pattern as other titles except for the new “Epic Hunting Quest.” This allowed for quest optimization in a way. Players could choose from one to four different monsters to fight in one quest. There were other quests that players could accept from the gathering hall and a Felyne character as well. Considering its PSP and iOS capabilities, it was a unique entry in the franchise. Sadly, it can’t be downloaded on mobile nowadays because Capcom removed it from the App store back in 2019. Available on: PlayStation Portable and PlayStation Vita 5) Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate - Metascore: 86 This entry in the franchise is an expansion of Monster Hunter 4. One of its unique aspects is that it contains the most monsters ever found in a Monster Hunter game, with the total equaling nearly 90! Once again, players find themselves traveling through different environments and battling monsters that live there, except there’s a mysterious virus that threatens the world. There’s also the option of forming hunting parties with friends and choosing from a huge lineup of weapons and armor (especially when the DLC added new armor sets and masks) to make hunting just a little bit easier. No doubt, this entry was ranked as one of the best Monster Hunter games on Metacritic because it is one of the best-received games in the franchise to date. Available on: Nintendo 3DS 4) Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak - Metascore: 87 Sunbreak is the newest Monster Hunter content at the moment. It’s an expansion for Nintendo Switch’s Monster Hunter Rise (I’ll get to that one in a minute). The expansion made improvements to gameplay, but also added new monsters and hunter locales. There are also Master Rank quests, which add new difficulty to the game. Sunbreak was released in June of this year and has already accumulated positive reviews. Available on: Nintendo Switch and PC 3) Monster Hunter Rise - Metascore: 87 This story-packed game has players fighting or capturing monsters as they complete quests for monster parts, and other rewards that will strengthen their weapons and armor as they travel throughout the land. A lot of weapons from Monster Hunter: Generations and World return in this game, so there are a lot of weapons to sift through. The story, in my opinion, is really where the meat is for this entry. And with the addition of Sunbreak, there’s even more story to explore. Players take on the role of a hunter (again) as they uncover the “Rampage,” a mysterious occurrence of crazed monsters attacking Fugen Village at random, eventually spreading to Kamura Village, another prominent location in the game. Sunbreak’s arc adds another huge task for the hunter to overcome after a strange monster appears. I won’t delve into spoilers, so those are the only plot details I’ll discuss for this one. Any best Monster Hunter game list wouldn’t feel complete without Rise and Sunbreak, honestly. Available on: Nintendo Switch and PC 2) Monster Hunter: World - Iceborne - Metascore: 87 One thing to say about the Monster Hunter franchise on Metacritic is that critics and players alike love their game expansions. Iceborne serves as an expansion to the highly praised Monster Hunter: World (again, I’ll get to it in a minute). It adds a new arc to the original game’s story and offers players the chance to explore a large icy region of the world. There, players can find new species of monsters along with some returning ones. Iceborne also expands the world’s skill-based progression and crafting system. Capcom really gave attention to all parts of the game for this one. Combat features were also added to aid players in the final showdown with the monster, Velkhana. Available on: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC 1) Monster Hunter: World - Metascore: 90 Now here’s the highest-ranked game on Metacritic. World has players, once again, take on the role of a hunter who joins a research team to help study the land of Astera. The player’s main goal is to slay or capture monsters for further research. Armors and weapons, like in other Monster Hunter games, determines how well these monster hunting goals are met. Quests also play a big part in World. This time, quests can be enhanced by meals that provide specific buffs for battles. Several features help players monster hunt, such as Scout Flies that highlight monster tracks or other collectibles players might otherwise miss. Also, World’s story mode is directly tied to its different types of quests, which are low and high-rank categories. that would take me all day to mention here. This neverending exploration and richness of gameplay features is possibly the main reason it is ranked number one and rightly so. There’s a lot to discover in this game Available on: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC What is the Best Monster Hunter Game? If there’s anything to be learned from this list, it’s that the Monster Hunter expansions are definitely worth the money. Perhaps some gaming companies can learn a thing or two from Capcom when it comes to DLC releases. I guess it depends on one’s personal opinion on game expansions in general. With the recent success of Sunbreak, I’m curious to know what Capcom has in store for the franchise in the coming years.
