If you're not interested in my stories about uncle Jenkins, manga and struggles with stacks of Macs, just skip ahead a few sections, and I'll share data on how the folks that used to be responsible for Jenkins feel their jobs changed. I work at Bitrise, the folks that put together this report Uncle Jenkins Did you know that in Japan, devs will often refer to Jenkins as 'Jenkins ojisan', or 'Uncle Jenkins'? 🇯🇵 When I first started working at Bitrise and Google Translated Japanese Tweets, that confused me tremendously. Fast forward a couple of years, and we actually hired a manga artist to tell the story of devs struggling with their Jenkins boxes: But I digress. Jenkins is free.... ? 🎉 We all know Jenkins. It's estimated to be what over 70% of devs use for their CI, and for good reason: It's free It's flexible It's open source But that flexibility comes at a price. Unless that's fallen off of a truck by the docks, Jenkins is probably not 'free' TLDR Let's migrate! But... What do we do with our Jenkins folks? For these and a number of other reasons that could make up an entirely separate article, cloud-based alternatives like CircleCI, Travis and - yes - Bitrise have been edging out the traditional "Jenkins box" in most mobile engineering organisations. That's usually great for those organisations (more on that later), but what about the folks that were responsible for maintaining Jenkins? Are they out of a job? Demoted to getting coffee and bagels for the team? What does their day to day look like after we've said our goodbyes to uncle Jenkins? We decided to find out, by asking. The report Over January and February of 2021, our UX research team, developer advocates, and a number of other folks surveyed and interviewed hundreds of ex-Jenkins maintainers who had switched to cloud CI for mobile. Our goal was to find out exactly what had changed for these people, and - more then anything - figure out how they felt about the change. What follows are some of the main takeaways: Computer says... Engineers are happier! (the computer actually said 'yes', but there's no GIF for that...) 73.9% of those interviewed answered that they were happier with their jobs after moving from Jenkins to a cloud CI alternative. As we pointed out in our previous , media coverage can be seen as a valid indicator of a market’s economic potential. CB Insights defines a unicorn as a private company valued at $1 billion and above. The term unicorn as a definition for billion-dollar startups was first used by Aileen Lee from in a Techcrunch in 2013 and it has become pretty popular over the last two years. 2015 was the of the unicorns as more than 50% of all companies (73 of 144) on CB Insights Unicorn List joined that list. Unicorn List Cowboy Ventures article year To quantify the public attention of these highest-rated private companies, we analyzed their coverage in the world’s leading tech media. We only watched the 119 companies from the Unicorn List that are textually unique (e.g. not ) and analyzed more than 1 million articles in total. This means that tech media cover a company more the higher its value. But the scatter plot also reveals that many companies get more (e.g. Credit Karma, Buzzfeed), or less (e.g. Palantir, Lufax), attention than their valuation would suggest. To better understand which kind of startups get a particularly large amount of attention, we calculated an index of media attention and valuation. If this Attention/Valuation Index is above 100, the startup received above-average attention in 2015 in comparison to its valuation. Startups that joined the Unicorn Club in 2015 received above-average attention in the same year. This interdependency was to be expected as the funding event itself is relevant news. Analyzing the Attention/Valuation Index for startups from different regions revealed that European unicorns received the highest attention in the top tech media sources measured on their valuation. This was quite surprising to us as most of the leading tech media sources are based in the United States. Asian startups on the other hand got significantly less attention than Western startups. Three (Xiaomi, Flipkart, Didi Kuaidi) of the 10 most valued companies are based in Asia, but none of them are in the top 10 of media attention. Looking at the industries shows that e-commerce/marketplaces and fintech startups received particularly strong media attention in 2015. On the other hand, big data und healthcare startups like Palantir or Intarcia were hardly noticed.
