How about nerds in High Energy Physics, such as the chaps at the Large Hadron Collider? Do you think they would want to have more energy to smash particles and lasers with? - Yes. AIs, quantum computers, high-energy colliders, and proof-of-work cryptocurrencies all have one thing in common. They are energy-guzzling beasts. Parking them at the sun could be big business. Why we might need this idea As a civilization, our data needs are ballooning. But as data needs balloon, so do the energy needs. It is like with a child. They grow bigger brains during their teenage years, and their appetite shoots through the roof. Data consumes energy to turn into information. Hence, Information is energy. If you have been following my posts, you have heard of Landauer.  We need information on how to build better AI, to build a better Bitcoin economy, to build a greener world, to build better skyscrapers, to build skyhooks, and to go to Mars. Training AI consumes a lot of energy, consumes a lot of energy, carbon capture consumes gargantuan amounts of energy, all building works consume a lot of energy, and rockets? You know the answer. mining Bitcoins A solar parked business is an idea to take some of this data processing, raw material first stage processing work, away from us humans. And away from our planet. If we engineer it right, up goes raw materials, and down comes finished products. This is the (far) future of big business for big energy infrastructure. Like Superman drenches up in sunlight to come make the world a better place, a solar-parked business is our Superman. A Solar-Parked business So, the idea is not to probe the sun. That is all good if you just want to build solar probes that move fast and measure the temperature of the sun’s surface, et cetera. You want to park at the sun, like in the name – Parker Solar Probe. The business, whatever it is, makes profits while your system is as close to the sun as possible. But before that, some tens to hundreds of billions of dollars are needed to launch all the parts toward the sun, and then more money via rocket fuel is needed to steer everything into place. By all means, this is not the kind of venture a fractured world economy with low time preference, such as ours, can handle. This is not like launching a start-up in your garage to profit from quick user aggregation in the next ten months. This needs big planning by big multinational corporations supported by multiple governments. The level of dedication would be as big as with the ITER nuclear fusion project. And the risk would be just as big. With ITER, we risk ending up with running costs of billions of dollars that only return millions of dollars worth of energy profit. With a solar parking business, the energy is worth trillions of dollars, alright, but it may fry your investment to Kingdom come if you do not navigate well the treachery that is being in outer space while so close to the sun. Forget building a Dyson Sphere; this is it. I am certain that a solar-parked business is how we hack our way up the ladder of the Kardashev scale. The idea that we have to first consume all the solar energy falling on earth before we move to the energy output by the sun, is a big step idea that will not happen. More viable is a mix: Some small-time but profitable solar parked business, coupled with better management of our planetary solar energy, coupled with some investments on the moon and on other planets like Mars, Venus, and Mercury. The first reason that you’re not creating or keeping the kind of money that you desire and is because you probably have a lot of energetic leaks and money leaks you’re not aware of. When you act in ways that cause energetic misalignments in yourself, your money bucket ends up being more like a sieve so you can’t hold any of the money that comes in. One of the most pervasive energetic money leaks is cheating on your taxes by underreporting your income. For example, if you’re in business for yourself, do you take more deductions than are warranted? Let’s say you work from home and regularly take a home office deduction. Have you ever claimed an office space that was twice as big as your real home office, thinking, “Oh well, everybody does it and I won’t get caught”? That is an energetic leak because it violates your self-integrity. Even when you get away with taking an extra large deduction, there’s always the fear in the back of your mind that you’ll get caught and that’s a big energy drain. Small energy leaks quickly add up to have real, negative consequences on your ability to attract and receive money (which is just another form of energy). Another example of where people leak energy and money is by ignoring their bills. You know what I’m talking about: That giant stack of unopened bills still sitting on your desk or kitchen counter or stashed away in a bottom drawer because you’re thinking, “I don’t have the money to pay the bills” or simply “I don’t like paying my bills.” Here’s a another, more empowering way to think about bill paying: bless the fact that you have the money to pay them. And if you don’t have the money to pay all your bills, then bless the money you do have, the electricity that’s still on in your house and that money will be coming to you that will allow you to pay the bills. I want to share with you one last example of a common way people leak energy is committing to things that you actually don’t want to commit to. A perfect example is if you have kids. There are a zillion school volunteer opportunities, like being classroom mom, working on a play, or coaching the soccer team. Parents get asked to participate in these school activities, but don’t really want to do it. If you say yes out of a feeling of guilt or obligation, you’re setting up an energetic leak for yourself because now you’ve just committed to something you resent spending your time doing. If you do want to say yes to something, then say yes to it because it lights you up, fills your heart with joy and you’re excited about it. But if you don’t, then say no in integrity, so that not only are you not extending your energy to somebody or a situation to which you’re really not committed, but that you are giving the other person the chance to find somebody who is excited and fully committed. Think about that. This is a total reframe on the whole saying “yes to things out of guilt” scenario, whether it’s helping a friend or participating in the school play, and it’s very freeing. So, what do you do about these energetic and money leaks? You plug them. You fix them. You seal them up by correcting the situation. Let’s say you’ve committed to being a classroom mom and you didn’t really want to do that. Find a way to de-commit or get in energetic alignment with your commitment. It may be that you find somebody else to replace you. Or you bring your energy into alignment and really come from a place of service, generosity and contribution in being the classroom mom. You need to do one or the other or you will continue to leak energy around the situation, which will affect not just that one thing in your life but all areas of your life (including money). Problem #2: You’re not taking aligned action. When you’re an entrepreneur, no matter what kind of amazing spiritual or energetic work you do around manifesting your desire, if you don’t take aligned action, you’re not doing your part to bridge the gap between the energy of money and bringing it into your reality on the physical plane. Given your current situation, the business that you’re in, and the things that you want to accomplish with your life and business, what is one aligned action that you have been putting off? It might be creating a program. It might be getting your marketing strategy developed so you’re not always trying to do things last minute and just posting any old thing up on social media. Feel like you don’t know what your next right aligned action is? The thing is, deep down you do you know what it is… and it’s probably the thing that you feel a lot of resistance around. Your next right aligned action is the thing where you’re like, “Oh please, I don’t want to have to call people! I don’t want to be on Facebook Live! I don’t want to write this guest post or be a speaker at an event… because it scares me.” That is the very thing that will help you create the money you want. Problem #3: You’re not trying to succeed. You’re trying not to fail. There are a lot of entrepreneurs in all kinds of fields who are “trying” to succeed. That’s what they say: “I’m trying. I’m doing everything I can. I’m really trying hard.” The problem is that deep down, they don’t truly believe they can succeed. They’re not trying to succeed; they’re trying not to fail. Do you see the difference? There’s a massive mindset and energetic difference between “trying to succeed” and “trying not to fail”. This difference profoundly influences your ability to create money, attract clients and create abundance in your life. If you’re approaching whatever it is that you’re doing from an energy and a standpoint of “I’m trying not to fail,” that is a very different energy than an energy of “I am going to succeed. I’ll keep at it and I know I my efforts will pay off.” If you’re trying not to fail, then you’ll have a really hard time growing your business and being successful because you’re constantly focusing your energy on avoiding failure instead of doing the things you need to do to succeed. Problem #4: You’re over-complicating things. At the heart of it, being a successful online entrepreneur isn’t complicated. Getting clients is not complicated. It is as simple as reaching out to somebody, inviting them to work with you, having a conversation and then being unattached to whether they say yes or no. With the right offer that connects with your ideal clients and the right energy during the conversation, when you consistently ask enough people, you will hear enough yeses to create the kind of money you want. Where people get tripped up is that they overcomplicate things. They add on all the fancy new strategies and feel like they must have all the tech bells and whistles in order to book clients. Although tech and automation can certainly help you reach more people, the tools don’t make the sale. You do… with your offers, energy and authentically showing up in your marketing. People often hide behind technology, busywork or the “need” to implement complicated business-building strategies when they don’t feel confident about sharing their work or asking for the sale. I get it. Having conversations with people and inviting them to work with you risks you getting rejected. It feels safer hanging out behind the buffer of “anonymous” marketing strategies like Facebook ads that promise to get you clients without you having to talk to anyone. And then if you still don’t get clients, you can blame the ads and not feel like you failed. If you’re new in business and you’re not clear on what your message is, you don’t have a compelling core offer, you can’t explain what how you help people in under 30 seconds, you don’t really know the struggles and hopes of your ideal clients, you don’t know your pricing, and you don’t have rock-solid confidence in the value you provide, and a defined path for how the ads will help you put money in your bank account, Facebook ads and any other complicated marketing strategies are not going to work for you. Sorry, but it’s the truth. You’re going to see little return for all your time, money and frustration. The bottom line is that you need to have a lot of foundational pieces in place before you start complicating your business with tools and strategies you really don’t need to be successful. Do an audit on yourself: Where are you unnecessarily overcomplicating things in your business or even in your life? Are those things truly necessary? What would you stop doing if you didn’t feel like you had to do it in order to get clients or make sales? Problem #5: You’re not taking advantage of the opportunities all around you to create the money you desire. I’m going to give you a really perfect example. There are an infinite number of opportunities around all of us all the time to create more money and more of everything we want. You probably have an intuition about which opportunities are the right next moves for you. When a certain thing keeps showing up in your life over and over again, it’s a sure sign to pay attention. But here’s the tricky part: you need to pay attention from a place of non-judgment. We all tend to believe that getting that thing we want, like creating more money, has to happen in a certain way and we tend to dismiss opportunities that fall outside of that box because they look different than you wanted or expected them to. That way of thinking severely limits your ability to create the money you deserve (or anything else, for that matter). Here’s an example from my own life. Since the middle of this year, I’ve been attracting a lot of direct marketers. They join my Facebook group, Successful Women Entrepreneurs, they join my online challenges and they become my clients. I’d never been involved in any kind of direct marketing and I was like, “Why am I attracting all of these direct marketers? I don’t understand.” Typically the people I serve are coaches, healers, and transformation facilitators. But all of a sudden, tons of direct marketers are showing up in my world. Then, just recently the opportunity to meet a personal money goal I’ve set for myself came up… but it didn’t look at all like I thought it would. This is an opportunity that gives me what I want but it’s via direct marketing, which I hadn’t ever been particularly drawn to. And so I had to really think about it and ask myself, “ Am I going to pass up this opportunity to get what I want simply because it’s coming to me in a way that I didn’t expect?” If you’re not creating the kind of money and business results that you want, you need to look at where you might be letting your judgements and unsupportive beliefs get in the way of you seeing all the amazing opportunities to create what you want that are already all around you. After checking in with the vision I have for my business and life, I said yes to that opportunity and am integrating into my business model. How Does it Work? The authors show how Husserl’s ideas can be mapped onto the components of an active inference model. Sensory inputs correspond to raw “hyletic data,” (impressions that form perceptions), while the inferred causes of those sensations make up what we perceive as our experience. Crucially, the model equips each individual with an internal representation that includes not just their own states but also those of other group members. Leveraging Category Theory for Unified Representation The most innovative aspect of the new framework is its integration of mathematical tools from a field known as category theory. They then use a technique called “sheaf theory” to stitch together the compatible parts of these individual models. An Example from Nature Think of it like a flock of birds flying together. Each bird is constantly adjusting its own movements based on what it sees the other birds doing. It doesn’t need to have a detailed plan or a leader telling it what to do — it just naturally falls into formation by following simple rules and paying attention to its neighbors. A Human Example - Alignment of Understanding and Anticipation We can also use the example of a sports team, like a basketball team, playing together on the court. Each player on the team has a mental model of the game — they understand the rules, the objectives, and the general strategy. But more importantly, they also have a sense of what their teammates are likely to do in any given situation. This understanding is built up through hours of practice and gameplay together. During a fast-paced game, there’s no time for the players to stop and discuss each play in detail. Instead, they rely on their shared understanding and anticipation of each other’s actions. The point guard, for instance, might make a split-second decision to pass the ball to a particular teammate, not because they discussed it beforehand, but because they anticipate that the teammate will be in the right position to receive the pass. This is a prime example of “shared protentions” in action. Each player’s individual actions are guided by their expectations of what their teammates will do. And these expectations are not just one-way — they’re reciprocal and self-reinforcing. The teammate anticipates the pass because they know the point guard is likely to make it, and the point guard makes the pass because they anticipate the teammate being ready for it. Over time, this interplay of expectations and actions leads to a highly coordinated style of play, where the team seems to move and think as one unit. And importantly, this coordination emerges not from any one player’s explicit instructions, but from the implicit alignment of each player’s understanding and anticipations. Since 2017, my team and I have been working on . Threads is an inclusive workplace communications tool that is designed to help teams inform, discuss, and make decisions at scale. In what ways are you able to stay authentic to your employees? I think employees recognize authenticity the most when those in leadership positions actually implement what they are passionate about. Anyone can talk about what they think would make for a better workplace, but unless you walk the walk and make it happen, you won’t have a leg to stand on. I knew that I wanted inclusivity to be a big part of what Threads helped other businesses with, so it needed to start with us—from the ground up. We implemented a 50/50 gender cap in our first round of financing, which I feel all companies and founders should actively pursue in order to innovate and grow successfully. Additionally, it’s important to share early and often. This includes sharing both the good and the bad, creating a proper communication channel with your team that helps to normalize the ups and downs of a startup. As a leader, if everything you share is well crafted and framed, people eventually find it difficult to know whether or not they’re seeing your authentic self or some sort of figurehead within the organization. Authenticity is a two-way street. If people have to be “fake” at work, they’re going to assume you’re being fake as well. To allow everyone to be their authentic self, you need to create an environment where all types of people can bring their true selves to work agnostic of constraints. For example, as remote working continues to grow and evolve, we’ve seen other means of being authentic crop up, especially for the remote workforce. Providing employees with the ability to work remotely, whether it be for a day or permanently, allows employers to hire the best talent possible, regardless of location. This is no easy feat, but making sure employers have the proper internal systems, tools, and priorities in place is a great start. Being open, honest, and transparent when it comes to remote work empowers everyone to seek out the solution that will best fit their needs. In order to stay true to our mission of making work more inclusive, it means staying authentic on all fronts, which all boil down to open and honest communication. In order to retain the talent that you are working to bring onboard, employees want to feel comfortable where they work (whether they are WFH or not). “A black alarm clock on a chair” by on Szűcs László Unsplash Imagine a world without alarm clocks. You'd go to bed knowing that you cannot be late for a 9 o'clock meeting tomorrow. But how do you make sure that you get good a night's sleep without the risk of oversleeping? One possibility is to ask or pay someone else to wake you up. That way, they have would have to worry about not oversleeping. So, they might not sleep at all. Wasting human time and energy on such a common and mindless task is not justified. What people did instead was come up with a mechanism to get notified when to wake up. And this mechanism doesn't include a human in the loop. The solution in this case —the alarm clock — is so obvious that we rarely think about it. Yet, in everyday life, we often use a different mechanism instead of notifications: polling. That is when we do periodic checks to see if a state has changed. Say that you would like to buy fresh fish. You go to 3 local stores, but they only have frozen fish. You decide to wait until they get some fresh fish, so you come there every morning. That is an example of polling 101! If you decide to spare your time and energy, you might ask the friendly staff to save your contact number and give you a call when fresh fish arrives. But you'd be an exception, and that is the only reason why the staff would be able to do you that favor. Imagine that other people take advantage of the staff'’s good will — soon their good will wouldn't be able to scale enough to notify all interested people. They'd need to remember who was interested in what, find a way how to notify them quickly…soon they would either give up, or start to build their own version of a pen-and-paper information system. You might say that this is an unrealistic example. But it illustrates the point. How many times have you found yourself checking up on something that you wished to be notified about? The question then becomes: can we do better? Can we subscribe to changes that interest us? Changes on the web, but also in the physical world. Isn't that what IoT is about? Some companies already use systems that detect patterns in their events, but we need to make this available to consumers also, at the press of a button. Before we see how that can be achieved, let's first examine how we subscribe today. Subscriptions today What can we subscribe to nowadays? And when I say subscribe, I’m not talking about a monthly Netflix subscription — I’m talking about a subscription to notifications of certain events of interest happen. First, we've got time-based subscriptions. Our alarm clock example is in this category. The event it tells us about is that now is the time that we were interested in. A stopwatch is a slightly different, as it tells us that a certain amount of time has passed instead. But it belongs to the same category. Another type of subscriptions are those that are implicit in systems with closed feedback loops, like your air-conditioner. Not so long ago we had to pause and increase/decrease the power of such systems manually just to achieve and maintain the desired conditions. Today, because these systems monitor events about change of temperature through sensors, you can just find your preferred temperature once, and stop obsessing about it. There is one more thing to notice in the AC example: we are not simply notified when the event has happened (i.e. room temperature has gone below or above desired temperature), but instead, an action is taken by the system. is a common structure in . is a change of state, a signal generated by an event source, or an event generator. evaluates the change, and determines whether an action should be taken or not. The combination of an event and a condition can be observed as a new event source itself. can be "send an SMS message or notification", or "adjust the vents". For the sake of simplicity, only notifications will be considered as actions in this article. I urge you to consider implications of the system that I am going to describe if it could not only ingest events and push notifications, but also send instructions to devices within the IoT ecosystem and other web services. Event-condition-action event driven architecture Event Condition Action Finally, the third form of subscriptions that we have today is a subscription to content. In the physical world that's newspapers and magazines, while in the digital world the range of subscriptions is much wider, but still limited to content. We are notified about the same type of event, which is that new content has been published — new text, new video, new photo. Truth be told, most of this content is selected for us by recommendation systems such as those behind Instagram or Facebook, but that is orthogonal to the question whether we can be notified about changes in the physical and digital world. In case of subscriptions, we choose what to subscribe to, while in case of recommendation systems, it is the algorithm that chooses for us, based on our previous interactions. Democratization of publishing It is too hard for a digital business to implement functionality into their website. That is why we never see it. For local businesses, however, this task is practically impossible today. One of the enabler technologies for publishers was . It was adopted as a sort of standard, and provided common language for publishers and subscribers. For digital businesses, it is relatively easy to publish content through RSS. But that is it. It is limited to content. publish-subscribe RSS There is no processing in RSS. To put it in a simple way: you can not specify conditions that you want to subscribe to. Choice is limited. And it's for already digital businesses only. There are of course custom implementations of publish-subscribe functionality, that businesses with adequate investment in IT can provide. These lack standard, so it is hard to build systems on top of it. And for consumers, there is no common place to manage subscriptions. The final problem is that these events are in silos. What subscriptions provide is access to aggregated information. And you cannot detect a variety of patterns across different sources if you only have access to aggregated information. These problems pose some interesting challenges. To solve them, we must imagine a that would support these requirements. But we also have to imagine an ecosystem where all necessary participants have incentive to use the platform. Note that the platform design deeply impacts the ecosystem, and that the ecosystem dictates the platform's functionalities. platform Platform Publishers shouldn't have to set-up an infrastructure for processing or storing events. The cloud should be leveraged for this. Of course, other ideas can be discussed, like (i.e. Ethereum or IOTA), and that is certainly an interesting direction, and a topic for one of the next articles. blockchain So let's consider cloud platform as an event processor. All events, from various event sources from different publishers would flow to this platform. This inherently solves the “silos” problem from above. This cloud platform would need to process events to detect multiple patterns at the same time. To achieve this, it needs to perform distributed computation that scales horizontally, and dynamically, according to the current load. From the client side, a small library for publishers with simple API is what is required. It needs to be possible to integrate it easily within web applications, i.e. Javascript, as well as within embedded systems, i.e. Raspberry Pi. The latter would be used to provide local businesses publishing capabilities and presence in the digital world. If local businesses are able to buy cheap devices that transmit data from sensors to the platform, then we would know about from our environment, through the _internet —_hence, Well, at least part of it and its promises. The other part, autonomous interaction between things, is not the focus of this article. We need to sense the world first, and not just in a smart city, or smart home fashion. The internet is not jut a city or home. It is the world. things internet of things. Ecosystem You might wonder: how do we make businesses release their data to the public. The answer is: we create an ecosystem. It would consist of 3 roles: Publishers Developers Subscribers We've described enough so far. They are usually businesses who own the data. If they wish, they can use the cloud platform for their own needs, without making data public, and act as all 3 roles at the same time. Easy functionality without much effort. Alternatively, they can sell their data or give away data that they don't need for competitive advantage for free. publishers implement pattern detection algorithms that the cloud platform runs to process the events. Cloud platform provides a framework in which algorithms can be implemented. The platform acts as a multi-tenant host, where each tenant is one pattern-detection algorithm. Developers are the owners of an algorithm, and can decide whether they would like to sell it or not. It is very similar to app stores on Android, Windows, or iOS. Developers register their subscriptions to one or more pattern-detection algorithms. Detection of a pattern in events is what triggers a notification to subscribers. Subscribers The cloud platform provides more than one interface for subscribers. For tech-savvy users and other software companies, it provides a library to integrate subscriptions into their services. In that way, 3rd party software companies can perform various actions when events occur — for example, they can use this library to provide a service to book a flight when a low-cost offer is detected. For other users, which are the vast majority of users, there is a web portal. It provides a friendly user interface that displays available subscriptions and their parameters, and lets users configure and manage them. Comparing to the example above, instead of a flight being booked for you, you would just be notified when a low-cost offer for a flight appears. Some of us prefer to be more in control of what happens. Event schema and ontology In order for the algorithms to work, they must match the events' schema. But with different publishers, schemas can be different. One way in which they can differ is by naming the same property differently. Another way in which they can differ is by content, some publishers publish more details, while others publish less. The first kind of difference can only be solved through standardization. are a perfect solution here, as they provide a common vocabulary. However, it is not realistic to expect everyone to use the same ontology. Hence, a more probable outcome would be that this is driven by popularity. If a source is popular, developers are going to accommodate their algorithms to that source. And vice-versa. Schemas and algorithms evolve, and it is to be acknowledged that backward compatibility of the system is very important. Ontologies The second kind of difference is absorbed by dynamic schema detection. What is there is read, what is not is not taken into consideration. Conclusion This platform is not about performance. It is not meant to be used for algorithmic trading. It is about integration. The platform should provide a holistic picture of our environments, and not the one partitioned by silos. And it should allow us to build applications that connect us with things that matter to us, both in the digital and physical world. There is so much more that I researched in detail than what is the scope of this article. Some of that will be topic for next articles.
