Happily, the outcome could be richer and more dynamic collaborative game worlds for all players. video games While NPCs have always had fairly limited roles within games, a consequence of their narrow predetermined set of behaviours, the prospect of LLM-powered NPCs gives rise to an altogether more immersive and enriching playing experience. Picture this: NPCs with the depth, complexity, and unpredictability of human beings, figures that adapt and evolve (or even ) based on every single interaction they have with living players. regress This isn’t just an upgrade on what has gone before; it’s a complete reimagining of gaming as a whole. The Infinite Possibilities of LLM-Powered NPCs The integration of LLMs into games promises to rewrite the script on NPC interactions. These AI entities can be trained on vast datasets, enabling a spontaneity and realism that was hitherto unachievable.  Players might engage in intricate dialogues or strategic conversations, developing strong relationships with NPCs that affect their standing in the game. Large-language models promise an unprecedented level of immersion, as each NPC could develop a distinct persona that extends and evolves as the player’s journey unfolds. The implications here are far-reaching. Non-playable characters might represent heroes or villains, allies or enemies, their moral compasses and personal arcs defined by the individualised influence of every gamer. AI-driven NPCs could even be ported across different gaming universes, functioning as plug-and-play APIs and opening a Pandora’s box of narrative possibilities. Earlier this year, Replica Studios, an AI voice platform for games and film, for the Unreal Engine platform. These smart NPCs will be powered by OpenAI (developer of ChatGPT) and Replica’s library of 120+ text-to-speech AI voices, with the feature made available as a cloud-based plugin. unveiled AI-powered smart NPCs “Within the next technology hop, we will see AI-powered smart NPC live games and virtual experiences with hundreds of live concurrent players and NPCs all together, with no more latency than a Zoom video call that has hundreds of participants,” predicted Replica CEO Shreya Nivas. Alien Worlds’ Very Own LLM: A Large Lore Model In the , the potential for LLM-powered NPCs is particularly intriguing due to the game’s thriving user base: it’s the world’s most-played on-chain game. What’s more, players (known as Explorers) already generate creative content using AI tools, suggesting a willingness from the community to embrace everything AI has to offer. Alien Worlds Metaverse While Alien Worlds is a game in its own right, a number of other games live under its metaverse umbrella, from Battledome and Trilium Quest to Galactic Standoff and Battlefleet Armageddon. The ability to integrate AI-powered NPCs into current and future games that exist within the Alien Worlds universe is something that is likely to appeal to developers and the players they serve. Plans are already underway to turn Alien Worlds into a sprawling, cross-media sci-fi storytelling platform. One of the game’s key selling points – decentralised governance via Planetary Syndicate DAOs – presents a unique opportunity for further AI integration: these Syndicates could democratically curate and approve the flood of AI-generated content produced by players, whether in the form of stories, characters, artwork, videos, etc, ensuring Explorers are the ones who shape the game’s lore. The integration of LLMs into gaming, specifically within successful decentralised ecosystems like Alien Worlds, heralds a new era for interactive storytelling and collaborative game worlds. As AI-powered smart NPCs become more nuanced, and their storylines more deeply interwoven with players’ actions, games will provide a level of interactivity that borders on the dream-like. 1. Introduction A recommender system refers to a system that is capable of predicting the future preference of a set of items for a user, and recommend the top items. One key reason why we need a recommender system in modern society is that people have too much options to use from due to the prevalence of Internet. In the past, people used to shop in a physical store, in which the items available are limited. For instance, the number of movies that can be placed in a Blockbuster store depends on the size of that store. By contrast, nowadays, the Internet allows people to access abundant resources online. Netflix, for example, has an enormous collection of movies. Although the amount of available information increased, a new problem arose as people had a hard time selecting the items they actually want to see. This is where the recommender system comes in. This article will give you a brief introduction to two typical ways for building a recommender system, Collaborative Filtering and Singular Value Decomposition. 2. Traditional Approach Traditionally, there are two methods to construct a recommender system : Content-based recommendation Collaborative Filtering The first one analyzes the nature of each item. For instance, recommending poets to a user by performing Natural Language Processing on the content of each poet. Collaborative Filtering, on the other hand, does not require any information about the items or the users themselves. It recommends items based on users’ past behavior. I will elaborate more on Collaborative Filtering in the following paragraphs. 3. Collaborative Filtering As mentioned above, Collaborative Filtering (CF) is a mean of recommendation based on users’ past behavior. There are two categories of CF: : measure the similarity between target users and other users User-based : measure the similarity between the items that target users rates/ interacts with and other items Item-based The key idea behind CF is that similar users share the same interest and that similar items are liked by a user. Assume there are users and items, we use a matrix with size to denote the past behavior of users. Each cell in the matrix represents the associated opinion that a user holds. For instance, M_{i, j} denotes how user i likes item j. Such matrix is called . CF is like filling the blank (cell) in the utility matrix that a user has not seen/rated before based on the similarity between users or items. There are two types of opinions, and . The former one directly shows how a user rates that item (think of it as rating an app or a movie), while the latter one only serves as a proxy which provides us heuristics about how an user likes an item (e.g. number of likes, clicks, visits). Explicit opinion is more straight-forward than the implicit one as we do not need to guess what does that number implies. For instance, there can be a song that user likes very much, but he listens to it only once because he was busy while he was listening to it. Without explicit opinion, we cannot be sure whether the user dislikes that item or not. However, most of the feedback that we collect from users are implicit. Thus, handling implicit feedback properly is very important, but that is out of the scope of this blog post. I’ll move on and discuss how CF works. m n m*n utility matrix explicit opinion implicit opinion User-based Collaborative Filtering We know that we need to compute the similarity between users in user-based CF. But how do we measure the similarity? There are two options, Pearson Correlation or cosine similarity. Let u_{i, k} denotes the similarity between user i and user k and v_{i, j} denotes the rating that user i gives to item j with v_{i, j} = ? if the user has not rated that item. These two methods can be expressed as the followings: Pearson Correlation (https://goo.gl/y93CsC) Cosine Similarity (https://goo.gl/y93CsC) Both measures are commonly used. The difference is that Pearson Correlation is invariant to adding a constant to all elements. Now, we can predict the users’ opinion on the unrated items with the below equation: Unrated Item Prediction (https://goo.gl/y93CsC) Let me illustrate it with a concrete . In the following matrixes, each row represents a user, while the columns correspond to different movies except the last one which records the similarity between that user and the target user. Each cell represents the rating that the user gives to that movie. Assume user E is the target. example Since user A and F do not share any movie ratings in common with user E, their similarities with user E are not defined in Pearson Correlation. Therefore, we only need to consider user B, C, and D. Based on Pearson Correlation, we can compute the following similarity. From the above table you can see that user D is very different from user E as the Pearson Correlation between them is negative. He rated higher than his rating average, while user E did the opposite. Now, we can start to fill in the blank for the movies that user E has not rated based on other users. Me Before You Although computing user-based CF is very simple, it suffers from several problems. One main issue is that users’ preference can change over time. It indicates that precomputing the matrix based on their neighboring users may lead to bad performance. To tackle this problem, we can apply item-based CF. Item-based Collaborative Filtering Instead of measuring the similarity between users, the item-based CF recommends items based on their similarity with the items that the target user rated. Likewise, the similarity can be computed with Pearson Correlation or Cosine Similarity. The major difference is that, with item-based collaborative filtering, we fill in the blank vertically, as oppose to the horizontal manner that user-based CF does. The following table shows how to do so for the movie . Me Before You It successfully avoids the problem posed by dynamic user preference as item-based CF is more static. However, several problems remain for this method. First, the main issue is scalability. The computation grows with both the customer and the product. The worst case complexity is O(mn) with m users and n items. In addition, sparsity is another concern. Take a look at the above table again. Although there is only one user that rated both and rated, the similarity between them is 1. In extreme cases, we can have millions of users and the similarity between two fairly different movies could be very high simply because they have similar rank for the only user who ranked them both. Essentially, we want to turn the recommendation problem into an optimization problem. We can view it as how good we are in predicting the rating for items given a user. One common metric is (RMSE). The lower the RMSE, the better the performance. Since we do not know the rating for the unseen items, we will temporarily ignore them. Namely, we are only minimizing RMSE on the known entries in the utility matrix. Now, you might wonder what do I mean by latent factor here? It is a broad idea which describes a property or concept that a user or an item have. For instance, for music, latent factor can refer to the genre that the music belongs to. SVD decreases the dimension of the utility matrix by extracting its latent factors. Essentially, we map each user and each item into a latent space with dimension . Therefore, it helps us better understand the relationship between users and items as they become directly comparable. With the convenient property of SVD that it minimizes SSE, we know that it also minimizes RMSE. Thus, SVD is a great tool for this optimization problem. To predict the unseen item for a user, we simply multiply U, Σ, and T. However, SVD is not without flaw. The main drawback of SVD is that there is no to little explanation to the reason that we recommend an item to an user. This can be a huge problem if users are eager to know why a specific item is recommended to them. I will talk more on that in the next blog post. 5. Conclusion I have discussed two typical methods for building a recommender system, Collaborative Filtering and Singular Value Decomposition. Moreover, cloud services were proven to be a strategic asset as Russian forces physically destroyed Ukrainian facilities holding critical data. Migration of government information technology infrastructure to the cloud improved resilience and preserved information essential to the operation of the economy and government. U.S. cloud computing and data center firms compete globally and offer services to a broad international customer base while, in parallel, the United States government actively partners with foreign governments to promote the fair and safe use of cloud computing resources. At the same time, providers from authoritarian states are globalizing, and they are often more responsive to short-term local economic development goals, providing packages that include financial subsidies, local cloud infrastructure, and workforce training. Cloud services and data centers are also a source of tension with close trade partners. Some have threatened to exclude U.S. cloud providers from their markets in part because of concerns about access to and control of data, despite the U.S. Clarifying Lawful Overseas Use of Data (CLOUD) Act providing for agreements to allow for consistent protections based on the rule of law. Strengthening Cloud Security through Collaborative Global Efforts

Industrial robots have been helping manufacture products and facilitate logistics for more than 60 years. Traditionally, these robots are very good at a specific function — for instance, going from A to B. Throw an obstacle into their work environment however — be it a physical object or a human collaborator — and severe safety hazards arise. Technology is progressing such that today’s industrial robots are being designed to be “adaptive,” meaning that they’re ​​capable of adapting to and learning from their environment, including human interactions. The big vision is that humans and automated robots will be able to interact with one another on a machine shop floor, reducing the risk involved with having humans work side by side with giant machines. In Europe, industrial robots are becoming more commonplace. Data published in 2021 from The International Federation of Robotics showed European industrial robot installations up 24% compared to 2020. And while Europe still trails the United States and China in terms of industrial robot use, the growth of EU industrial production — up 8% in 2021 and another 5% in 2022 — could drive robot adoption in factories. In order to better ensure that the industrial robots of the future can readily adapt to changing environments, while maintaining safe and trustworthy collaboration with humans, a group of universities, tech accelerators and private research labs from the European Union (EU) have established RoboSAPIENS. The project, which is funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe 2021-2027 research and innovation programme, will develop and implement safety mechanisms that will empower robots to — at a high level — safely adapt to unexpected changes. In an interview with TheNextWeb’s Ioanna Lykiardopoulou, consortium partner Ana Cavalcanti, a professor at the University of York, said that the project aims to include a trustworthiness checker in the current Monitor-Analyze-Plan-Execute-Knowledge (MAPE-K) framework for self adaptive systems. “What is missing here is the inclusion in the loop of a step that verifies whether certified guarantees, of safety or trustworthiness, are kept when plans change,” Cavalcanti told TheNextWeb. By adding this step, researchers hope that if a robot encounters an obstacle, it will consult if its originally programmed plan is still valid with the introduction of the obstacle. If it is not, the system will self update and a “trustworthiness checker” will validate the changes for safety issues. The researchers will use a combination of Deep Learning (DL) and Digital Twin (DT) — or a virtual representation of a physical object — techniques to generate the new control settings. “As the EU advances its industrial robotics capabilities, it’s imperative that measures be taken to ensure the safety and trustworthiness of the next generation of robots working alongside humans in a collaborative environment,” said Peter Gorm Larsen, a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Aarhus University, and the coordinator of the RoboSAPIENS project. “With RoboSAPIENS, we will prepare Europe’s industrial robotics industry for rapid and unforeseen adaptability in system structure and environment, assuring trustworthy collaboration with humans by changing behavior while maintaining and even enhancing performance and safety,” he added. According to a statement from the consortium, the project is already working on industrial use studies. The first empowers robots to disassemble electronic consumer waste, another aims to improve navigation predictability of autonomous water vessels. A third looks to help Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs) adapt to anomalies on machine shop floors, and a fourth will automatically assess risks in human-robot collaboration (cobot) situations. Consortium partners include Denmark’s Aarhus University; Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, AUTH (Greece); Danish Technological Institute, DTI (Denmark); Fraunhofer IFF, Fraunhofer (Germany); University of York, UoY (United Kingdom); University of Antwerp, UA (Belgium); Norwegian University of Science and Technology, NTNU (Norway); PAL Robotics, PAL (Spain); ISDI Accelerator, ISDI (Spain); Simula Research Lab, SRL (Norway). The RoboSAPIENS consortium isn’t the only entity working on marketing self adaptive robots safer and more efficient.
