Three were notably absent: Elon Musk of Tesla, who quit from the White House business advisory council after Trump withdrew the US from the Paris Agreement on climate; Travis Kalanick of Uber, who earlier resigned as a business adviser to the president; and Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook due to “scheduling conflicts,” as for the company.

When we think of the <a href="https://hackernoon.com/tagged/governments" target="_blank">government’s</a> technical ability, what usually comes to mind is some contract hacker rapidly typing at his keyboard or a massive data center containing all of our phone records, emails, and YouTube searches of cat videos. While this may be true for <a href="https://nsa.gov/" target="_blank">that one branch that relies on technical aptitude to spy on us all</a>, other facets of the American government need some help when it comes to writing <a href="https://hackernoon.com/tagged/code" target="_blank">code</a>.

A remember a few years back — well, now, maybe more than a few — while i was working at Code for America, we had the thoughtful idea of including every since one of that year’s fellowship apps in the intro presentation at the annual Summit. Seems easy, no? Over a handful of teams working for just 11 months, that should be just a handful of slides, right?

A Poor Man’s Hacker’s Guide to “Data-Driven” Presentations

Applying to <a href="https://medium.com/holberton-school" target="_blank">Holberton School</a> for someone who holds a Master’s degree in Political Science &amp; International Relations might seem a stretch at first glance. Indeed, for decades, policy wonks and techies have been cordially ignoring each other. The former relying on their advisors’ reports to make the correct decisions and the latter generally avoiding the public debate.

Updating our democracy

It was the French observer, Alexis de Tocqueville, that noted that in our American democracy our imagined lines between private and public lives were too crude, too strict, for reality. What he saw when he documented the early days of our young republic was a society, structured around small towns and bristling with associations of all kinds: political, civic, social, etc. Where there had been fires, a volunteer brigade was congealed to respond to future disasters; where bridges needed to be built, teams of people came together to get to work. Associative — or community — life in America was everywhere, and it was not one defined by ego or fancy; instead, by common need and collective resolve.

Engines of Civic Entrepreneurship

In the United States, Senate Bill S.1241: “Modernizing AML Laws to Combat Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing” is tabled for debate. This is an exceptionally bad, un-American bill, very probably drafted in part by incumbents who fear being disrupted by Bitcoin. This bill has been tabled because anti-Bitcoin agents have been working overtime, spreading the mistaken idea that Bitcoin is money or an asset. It is neither. I will explain exactly why Bitcoin is not an asset or money, and why this absurd bill is unconstitutional and bad for America.
