is the study of prosperous, harmonious, and equitable societies, often depicted in fiction. These societies imagined in fiction can represent ideal or aspirational models of social, economic, and environmental organization, where resources are used sustainably and equitably, and where there is a positive interconnection between humans and the environment. Prospenomics may involve analyzing these fictional models to extract insights and inspiration for building a real society that is fairer and more prosperous. Prospenomics On the other hand, the concept of refers to a future stage where the scarcity of material resources is no longer a predominant concern. In this stage, advanced technology, production efficiency, and sustainable resource use would allow for an abundance of goods and services for all, without compromising the environment or depleting natural resources. Post-scarcity implies a fundamental shift in how society organizes and utilizes its resources, seeking to achieve a sustainable balance between human needs and planetary preservation. Post-Scarcity Prospenomics, also known as Prospenomia, is the study of prosperity and its generators, aiming to pave a path towards Post-Scarcity. Through an economic and social approach that transcends the conventional paradigms of known economic theory, which often associates relatively low abundance with hard and inefficient work and fails to distribute well-being among individuals, paying little attention to the depletion of resources on the planet. The field of Prospenomics arises from the urgent need to rethink current economic and social models. To achieve this, we must study all known forms of prosperity, from intelligent decisions made in ancient times to the fiction of Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek, envisioning a future where prosperity is abundant, where we no longer use monetary fractions for the exchange of goods and services, and people work to satisfy their talents and ambitions for personal upliftment; or also the ideas of Buckminster Fuller, in which prosperity was not limited solely to the accumulation of material wealth or economic growth but rather ensuring well-being and sustainability for all forms of life on the planet. Considering the 4.5 billion years of evolution and extinctions that have shaped our planet, the delicate balances of biological relationships that have brought us to today, Prospenomics recognizes the complexity of interactions between living beings and the environment, as well as the central role of human beings in this context, as intellectual protagonists of the planet. Therefore, we must make use of our cerebral cortex, the most evolved tool that nature has ever created, as well as future forms of Artificial Intelligence to better explore the resources "seemingly" scarce, to the point of recognizing that they are extremely more abundant than conceived. Throughout history, humanity has emerged as a species capable of profoundly transforming the environment and influencing the fate of other life forms. This unique ability confers significant responsibility on human beings in preserving and balancing the global ecosystem. Prospenomics starts from the assumption that the current environmental and social crisis is the result of an economic model based on profit maximization and rampant consumption, which ignores the planet's limits and generates extreme inequality. In this sense, the study seeks to identify and promote alternative economic principles that can lead to a more sustainable and prosperous society. In 1986, I had an unusual class, "Brazilian Problem Studies",  that my mentor, Antonio Sérgio Pacheco Mercier, taught. Even though they were on Saturdays, I loved attending his classes. Professor Mercier had the gift of captivating students with his engaging narratives, especially when discussing subjects like international trade. Cassandra is a distributed, decentralized, scalable, and highly available wide-column database. In terms of CAP theorem, Cassandra stands for AP (availability and partition tolerance). It means that Cassandra prefers that all clients can find data even in cases where not all nodes are available and will work as expected when partial network failure occurs. However, it also means that the consistency of the data can be compromised in favor of availability and partition tolerance - users will see the data, but it may be stale for a while. Cassandra is designed for achieving high throughput and faster write operations. And it is precisely sacrificing consistency that allows Cassandra to be highly available. By default, Cassandra is designed to be eventually consistent, meaning that it may not provide strong consistency. This makes Cassandra suitable for applications where consistency is not a critical requirement. However, it is possible to configure Cassandra to provide strong consistency, although this can impact performance. Cassandra, being a NoSQL database, does not support table joins, foreign keys, or the ability to add columns other than the primary key in the WHERE clause while querying. These limitations should be taken into consideration before choosing to use Cassandra. Cassandra Building blocks : A column represents a key-value pair and serves as the fundamental unit of data structure. Column : acts as a container for columns that are referenced by the primary key. Row : serves as a container for tables that span across one or more Cassandra nodes. Keyspace : a container of keyspaces within Cassandra. Cluster : refers to a computer system that runs an instance of Cassandra. A node can be a physical host, a machine instance in the cloud, or even a Docker container. Node How Cassandra stores data Cassandra stores the data as a column family. It serves as a container for columns that are referenced by a primary key. A row of a column family includes several columns with key and value, and the row key serves as the primary key: A column family can store a different set of columns for each row key: Cassandra does not store columns with null values, which helps save significant storage space What is the primary key in Cassandra? The uniquely identifies each row of a table. In Cassandra, the primary key has two parts: Primary key In Cassandra, the partition key determines which node stores the data, while the clustering key determines how the data is stored within a node. For instance, consider a table with a . This primary key consists of two parts, represented by the two columns: PRIMARY KEY (city_id, event_id) 1. serves as the partition key, meaning that data will be partitioned based on the field, resulting in all rows with the same being stored on the same node. city_id city_id city_id 2. acts as the clustering key. Within each node, the data is organized and stored in sorted order based on the column. event_id event_id Clustering keys determine the storage arrangement of data within a node. It is possible to have multiple clustering keys, and any columns listed after the partition key are referred to as clustering columns. By spreading multiple copies of the data across different replicas, Cassandra enables other replicas to handle queries for that data range in case one node is unavailable. Two settings will affect the replication process: The replication factor determines how many nodes will store copies of the same data. In a cluster with a replication factor of 3, each row will be stored on three different nodes. Each keyspace in Cassandra can have a different replication factor. In Cassandra, the first replica is assigned to the node that owns the range based on the hash of the partition key. The remaining replicas are then placed on consecutive nodes in a clockwise manner. Cassandra uses two replication strategies to determine which nodes will be responsible for the replicas: Simple replication strategy In this strategy, the first replica is placed on a node determined by the partitioner, and the succeeding replicas are placed on the subsequent nodes in a clockwise manner. This replication strategy is applicable only for a single data center cluster. Network topology strategy To ensure resilience against complete loss of data, additional replicas within the same data center are placed by moving clockwise along the ring until reaching the first node in a different data center. This approach allows for the specification of varying replication factors for each data center, enabling control over the number of replicas to be placed in each specific location. APPARATUS FOR SIMPLE SCIENTIFIC EXPERIMENTS. Colour Discs for the Gramophone.—The gramophone, by virtue of its table revolving at a controllable speed, comes in useful for a series of optical experiments made with coloured discs bearing designs of different kinds. The material needed for these discs is cardboard, covered with white paper on one side, or the Bristol board used by artists. The discs on which the designs are drawn should be made as large as the gramophone table will take conveniently, so as to be viewed by a number of people at once. To encourage readers who do not possess a gramophone, it may be pointed out that a gramophone, is merely a convenience, and not indispensable for turning the discs, which may be revolved on a sharpened pencil or any other spindle with pointed ends. The Vanishing Spirals (Fig. 137).—This design, if spun slowly in a clockwise direction, gives one the impression that the lines all move in towards the centre. If the disc is turned in an anti-clockwise direction, the lines seem to move towards the circumference and disappear. To get the proper effect the gaze should be fixed and not attempt to follow the lines round. [Illustration: FIG. 137.] [Illustration: FIG. 138.] The Rolling Circles.—Figs. 138 and 139 are variations of the same idea. In Fig. 138 two large circles are described cutting one another and enclosing a smaller circle concentric with the disc. When spun at a certain rate the larger circles will appear to run independently round the small. The effect is heightened if the circles are given different colours. If black only is used for the large circles, the eyes should be kept half closed. In Fig. 139 two pairs of circles are described about two centres, neither of which is the centre of the disc. The pairs appear to roll independently. [Illustration: FIG. 139.] [Illustration: FIG. 140.] The Wriggling Line (Fig. 140).—If this design is revolved at a low speed and the eye is fixed on a point, the white (or coloured) line will seem to undulate in a very extraordinary manner. The line is made up of arcs of circles, and as the marking out is somewhat of a geometrical problem, a diagram (Fig. 141) is added to show how it is done. The dotted curves are those parts of the circles which do not enter into the design. Begin by marking out the big circle A for the disc. The circumference of this is divided into six equal parts (chord equal to radius), and through the points of division are drawn the six lines from the centre. Describe circles aaa, each half the diameter of A. The circles bbb are then drawn from centres on the lines RRR, and with the same radius as aaa., The same centres are used for describing the circles a1 a1 a1 and b1 b1 b1, parts of which form the inner boundary of the line. The background should be blackened and the belt left white or be painted some bright colour. [Illustration: FIG. 141.] Another optical illusion is afforded by Fig. 142. Two sets of circles are described about different centres, and the crescent-shaped areas between them coloured, the remainder of the disc being left white. The disc is revolved about the centre of the white areas, and one gets the impression that the coloured parts are portions of separate discs separated by white discs. [Illustration: FIG. 142.] [Illustration: FIG. 143.] The Magic Spokes (Fig. 143).—Place a design like this on the gramophone and let it turn at high speed. The radial lines seem but a blur. Now punch a hole one-eighth of an inch in diameter in a piece of blackened card, and, standing well away from the gramophone, apply your eye to the hole and move the card quickly to and fro. The extreme briefness of the glimpses obtained of the moving lines seems to rob them of motion, or even make them appear to be moving in the direction contrary to the actual. Instead of a single hole, one may use a number of holes punched at equal intervals round a circle, and revolve the card on the centre. If a certain speed be maintained, the spokes will appear motionless. The substitution of a long narrow slit for a circular hole gives other effects. [Illustration: FIG. 144.] A Colour Top.—Cut a 4-inch disc out of white cardboard and blacken one-half with Indian ink. On the other half draw four series of concentric black lines, as shown in Fig. 144. If the disc is mounted on a knitting needle and spun in a horizontal plane, the black lines will appear of different colours. A clockwise rotation makes the outermost lines appear a greenish blue, those nearest the centre a dark red, and the intermediate groups yellow and green. A reversal of the motion reverses the order of the colours, the red lines now being farthest from the centre. The experiment is generally most successful by artificial light, which contains a larger proportion of red and yellow rays than does sunlight. The speed at which the top revolves affects the result considerably. It should be kept moderate, any excess tending to neutralize the colours. [Illustration: FIG. 145.] The Magic Windmill.—Mark a circle 2-1/2 inches in diameter on a piece of notepaper, resting the centre leg [of the compass] so lightly that it dents without piercing the paper. With the same centre describe a 3/4-inch circle. Join the circles by eight equally spaced radial lines, and an eighth of an inch away draw dotted parallel lines, all on the same side of their fellow lines in order of rotation. Cut out along the large circle, and then with a. sharp knife follow the lines shown double in Fig. 145. This gives eight little vanes, each of which must be bent upwards to approximately the same angle round a flat ruler held with an edge on the dotted line. Next make a dent with a lead pencil at the exact centre on the vane side, and revolve the pencil until the dent is well polished. [Illustration: FIG. 146.] Hold a pin, point upwards, in the right hand, and with the left centre the mill, vanes pointing downwards, on the pin (Fig. 146). The mill will immediately commence to revolve at a steady pace, and will continue to do so indefinitely; though, if the head of the pin be stuck in, say, a piece of bread, no motion will occur. The secret is that the heat of the hand causes a very slight upward current of warmed air, which is sufficient to make the very delicately poised windmill revolve. A Pneumatic Puzzle.—For the very simple apparatus illustrated by Fig. 147 one needs only half a cotton reel, three pins, and a piece of glass or metal tubing which fits the hole in the reel. Adjust a halfpenny centrally over the hole and stick the pins into the reel at three equidistant points, so that they do not quite touch the coin, and with their ends sloping slightly outwards to allow the halfpenny to fall away. [Illustration: FIG. 147.—Apparatus for illustrating an apparent scientific paradox.] Press the coin against the reel and blow hard through the tube. One would expect the coin to fall; but, on the contrary, the harder you blow the tighter will it stick, even if the reel be pointed downwards. Only when you stop blowing will it fall to the floor. This is a very interesting experiment, and will mystify onlookers who do not understand the reason for the apparent paradox, which is this. The air blown through the reel strikes a very limited part of the nearer side of the halfpenny. In order to escape, it has to make a right-angle turn and pass between coin and reel, and, while travelling in this direction, loses most of its repulsive force. The result is that the total pressure on the underside of the coin, plus the effect of gravity, is exactly balanced by the atmospheric pressure on the outside, and the coin remains at that distance from the reel which gives equilibrium of forces. When one stops blowing, the air pressure on both sides is the same, and gravity makes the coin fall away. The function of the pins is merely to keep the halfpenny centred on the hole. If steam is used instead of human breath, a considerable weight may be hung from the disc without dislodging it. The Magic Swingers.—The easily made toy illustrated next is much more interesting than would appear from the mere picture, as it demonstrates a very striking physical phenomenon, the transference of energy. If two pendulums are hung close together from a flexible support and swung, their movements influence one another in a somewhat remarkable way—the swing of the one increasing as that of the other dies down, until a certain point is reached, after which the process is reversed, and the “dying” or “dead” pendulum commences to come to life again at the expense of the other. This alternation is repeated over and over again, until all the energy of both pendulums is exhausted. [Illustration: FIG. 148.-Magic pendulums.] To make the experiment more attractive, we substitute for the simplest possible pendulums—weights at the end of strings—small swings, each containing a figure sitting or standing on a seat, to the underside of which is attached a quarter of a pound of lead. To prevent the swings twisting, they are best made of strong wire bent as shown in Fig. 148, care being taken that the sides are of equal length, so that both hooks may press equally on the strings. Eighteen inches is a good length. The longer the swing, and the heavier the weight, the longer will the experiment last. The swings are hung, six inches apart, from a stout string stretched tightly between two well-weighted chairs or between two fixed points. The string should be at least 4 feet long. With two equally long and equally weighted pendulums, the three following experiments may be carried out:— Let one, A, start from rest. The other, B will gradually die, and A swing to and fro more and more violently, till B at last comes to a dead stop. Then A will die and B in turn get up speed. The energy originally imparted to B is thus transferred through the string from one pendulum to the other an indefinite number of times, with a slight loss at every alternation, until it is finally exhausted by friction. Swing them in opposite directions, but start A from a higher point than B. They will each alternately lose and gain motion, but will never come to rest, and will continue to swing in opposite directions—that is, while A swings north or east B will be swinging south or west, and vice versa. Start them both in the same direction, but one from a higher point than the other. There will be the same transference of energy as in (2), but neither will come to rest between alternations, and they will always swing in the same direction. Unequal Lengths.—If for one of the original pendulums we substitute one a couple of inches longer than the other, but of the same weight, the same set of three experiments will provide six variations among them, as in each case either the longer or the shorter may be started first or given the longer initial swing, as the case may be. The results are interesting throughout, and should be noted. Three or more Pendulums.—If the number of pendulums be increased to three or more, the length of all being the same, a fresh field for observation is opened. With an increase of number a decrease in the individual weighting is advisable, to prevent an undue sagging of the string. In conclusion, we may remark that a strong chain stretched between two trees and a suitable supply of rope will enable the reader and his friends to carry out all the experiments on a life-size scale. A Smoke-ring Apparatus.—Get a large tin of the self-opening kind and cut a hole 2 inches across in the bottom. Then make a neat circular hole 1-1/4 inches in diameter in the centre of a paper disc somewhat smaller than the bottom of the tin, to which it is pasted firmly on the outside. The other end—from which the lid is removed—must be covered with a piece of sheet rubber stretched fairly tight and secured to the tin by string passed over it behind the rim. An old cycle or motor car air tube, according to the size of the tin, will furnish the rubber needed; but new material, will cost only a few pence (Fig. 149). [Illustration: FIG. 149.—Smoke-ring apparatus.] A dense smoke is produced by putting in the tin two small rolls of blotting paper, one soaked in hydrochloric acid, the other in strong ammonia. The rolls should not touch. To reduce corrosion of the tin by the acid, the inside should be lined with thin card. [Illustration: FIG. 150.—Smoke-making apparatus.] A ring of smoke is projected from the hole in the card if the rubber diaphragm is pushed inwards. A slow, steady push makes a fat, lazy ring come out; a smart tap a thinner one, moving much faster. Absolutely still air is needed for the best effects, as draughts make the rings lose shape very quickly and move erratically. Given good conditions, a lot of fun can be got out of the rings by shooting one through another which has expanded somewhat, or by destroying one by striking it with another, or by extinguishing a candle set up at a distance, and so on. The experimenter should notice how a vortex ring rotates in itself while moving forward, like a rubber ring being rolled along a stick. A continuous supply of smoke can be provided by the apparatus shown in Fig. 150. The bulb of a scent spray is needed to force ammonia gas through a box, made air-tight by a rubber band round the lid, in which is a pad soaked with hydrochloric acid. The smoke formed in this box is expelled through a pipe into the ring-making box. Caution.—When dealing with hydrochloric acid, take great care not to get it on your skin or clothes, as it is a very strong corrosive. There are a few features of this useful and in some ways wonderful contrivance which should be noticed. First, THE GEARING OF A CYCLE. To a good many people the expression "geared to 70 inches," or 65, or 80, as the case may be, conveys nothing except the fact that the higher the gear the faster one ought to be able to travel. Let us therefore examine the meaning of such a phrase before going farther. The safety cycle is always "geared up"—that is, one turn of the pedals will turn the rear wheel more than once. To get the exact ratio of turning speed we count the teeth on the big chain-wheel, and the teeth on the small chain-wheel attached to the hub of the rear wheel, and divide the former by the latter. To take an example:—The teeth are 75 and 30 in number respectively; the ratio of speed therefore = 75⁄30 = 5⁄2 = 2½. One turn of the pedal turns the rear wheel 2½ times. The gear of the cycle is calculated by multiplying this result by the diameter of the rear wheel in inches. Thus a 28-inch wheel would in this case give a gear of 2½ × 28 = 70 inches. One turn of the pedals on a machine of this gear would propel the rider as far as if he were on a high "ordinary" with the pedals attached directly to a wheel 70 inches in diameter. The gearing is raised or lowered by altering the number ratio of the teeth on the two chain-wheels. If for the 30-tooth wheel we substituted one of 25 teeth the gearing would be— 75⁄25 × 28 inches = 84 inches. A handy formula to remember is, gearing = T/ × D, where T = teeth on large chain-wheel; = teeth on small chain-wheel; and D = diameter of driving-wheel in inches. t t Two of the most important improvements recently added to the cycle are—(1) The free wheel; (2) the change-speed gear. THE FREE WHEEL is a device for enabling the driving-wheel to overrun the pedals when the rider ceases pedalling; it renders the driving-wheel "free" of the driving gear. It is a ratchet specially suited for this kind of work. From among the many patterns now marketed we select the Micrometer free-wheel hub (Fig. 222), which is extremely simple. The r is attached to the hub of the driving-wheel. The small chain-wheel (or "chain-ring," as it is often called) turns outside this, on a number of balls running in a groove chased in the neck of the ratchet. Between these two parts are the , of half-moon shape. The driving-wheel is assumed to be on the further side of the ratchet. To propel the cycle the chain-ring is turned in a clockwise direction. Three out of the six pawls at once engage with notches in the ratchet, and are held tightly in place by the pressure of the chain-ring on their rear ends. The other three are in a midway position. ratchet-wheel pawls When the rider ceases to pedal, the chain-ring becomes stationary, but the ratchet continues to revolve. The pawls offer no resistance to the ratchet teeth, which push them up into the semicircular recesses in the chain-ring. Each one rises as it passes over a tooth. It is obvious that driving power cannot be transmitted again to the road wheel until the chain-wheel is turned fast enough to overtake the ratchet. THE CHANGE-SPEED GEAR. A gain in speed means a loss in power, and . By gearing-up a cycle we are able to make the driving-wheel revolve faster than the pedals, but at the expense of control over the driving-wheel. A high-geared cycle is fast on the level, but a bad hill-climber. The low-geared machine shows to disadvantage on the flat, but is a good hill-climber. Similarly, the express engine must have large driving-wheels, the goods engine small driving-wheels, to perform their special functions properly. vice versâ In order to travel fast over level country, and yet be able to mount hills without undue exertion, we must be able to do what the motorist does—change gear. Two-speed and three-speed gears are now very commonly fitted to cycles. They all work on the same principle, that of the epicyclic train of cog-wheels, the mechanisms being so devised that the hub turns more slowly than, at the same speed as, or faster than the small chain-wheel, according to the wish of the rider. We do not propose to do more here than explain the principle of the epicyclic train, which means "a wheel on (or running round) a wheel." Lay a footrule on the table and roll a cylinder along it by the aid of a second rule, parallel to the first, but resting on the cylinder. It will be found that, while the cylinder advances six inches, the upper rule advances twice that distance. In the absence of friction the work done by the agent moving the upper rule is equal to that done in overcoming the force which opposes the forward motion of the cylinder; and as the distance through which the cylinder advances is only half that through which the upper rule advances, it follows that the which must act on the upper rule is only half as great as that overcome in moving the cylinder. The carter makes use of this principle when he puts his hand to the top of a wheel to help his cart over an obstacle. force Now see how this principle is applied to the change-speed gear. The lower rule is replaced by a cog-wheel, c (Fig. 223); the cylinder by a cog, b, running round it; and the upper rule by a ring, a, with internal teeth. We may suppose that a is the chain-ring, b a cog mounted on a pin projecting from the hub, and c a cog attached to the fixed axle. It is evident that b will not move so fast round c as a does. The amount by which a will get ahead of b can be calculated easily. We begin with the wheels in the position shown in Fig. 223. A point, i, on a is exactly over the topmost point of c. For the sake of convenience we will first assume that instead of b running round c, b is revolved on its axis for one complete revolution in a clockwise direction, and that a and c move as in Fig. 224. If b has 10 teeth, c 30, and a 40, a will have been moved 10⁄40 = ¼ of a revolution in a clockwise direction, and c 10⁄30 = ⅓ of a revolution in an anti-clockwise direction. Now, coming back to what actually does happen, we shall be able to understand how far a rotates round c relatively to the motion of b, when c is fixed and rolls (Fig. 225). b advances ⅓ of distance round c; a advances ⅓ + ¼ = 7⁄12 of distance round b. The fractions, if reduced to a common denominator, are as 4:7, and this is equivalent to 40 (number of teeth on a): 40 + 30 (teeth on a + teeth on c.) B To leave the reader with a very clear idea we will summarize the matter thus:—If T = number of teeth on a, = number of teeth on c, then movement of a: movement of b:: T + : T. t t Here is a two-speed hub. Let us count the teeth. The chain-ring (= a) has 64 internal teeth, and the central cog (= c) on the axle has 16 teeth. There are four cogs (= b) equally spaced, running on pins projecting from the hub-shell between a and c. How much faster than b does a run round c? Apply the formula:—Motion of a: motion of b:: 64 + 16: 64. That is, while a revolves once, b and the hub and the driving-wheel will revolve only 64⁄80 = ⅘ of a turn. To use scientific language, b revolves 20 per cent. slower than a. This is the gearing we use for hill-climbing. On the level we want the driving-wheel to turn as fast as, or faster than, the chain-ring. To make it turn at the same rate, both a and c must revolve together. In one well-known gear this is effected by sliding c along the spindle of the wheel till it disengages itself from the spindle, and one end locks with the plate which carries a. Since b is now being pulled round at the bottom as well as the top, it cannot rotate on its own axis any longer, and the whole train revolves —that is, while a turns through a circle b does the same. solidly To get an of gearing, matters must be so arranged that the drive is transmitted from the chain-wheel to b, and from a to the hub. While b describes a circle, a and the driving-wheel turn through a circle and a part of a circle—that is, the driving-wheel revolves faster than the hub. Given the same number of teeth as before, the proportional rates will be a = 80, b = 64, so that the gear 25 per cent. increase rises By means of proper mechanism the power is transmitted in a three-speed gear either (1) from chain-wheel to a, a to b, b to wheel = gear; or (2) from chain-wheel to a and c simultaneously = solid, normal, or gear; or (3) from chain-wheel to b, b to a, a to wheel = gear.
