Taking action has been a life-changing decision for me. It has brought a lot of clarity to my life and day-to-day activities. I get a lot of tasks done and improve myself consistently as well. We will never be sure of every decision we make. We have an innate tendency to overthink and analyze situations before taking action. Overthinking creates multiple outcomes that lead to increased anxiety, dissatisfaction, and even paralysis. This concept was theorized by psychologist Barry Schwartz in his book “The Paradox of Choice: Why More Is Less.” Schwartz argues that having choices is generally considered a positive aspect of modern life. The abundance of options in various domains—such as career paths and life decisions—can overwhelm individuals and hinder their ability to make effective decisions. We should use our time efficiently and learn in the process. Do not overthink things. Just-In-Time Knowledge Over Just-In-Case Knowledge “Just-in-time knowledge” refers to acquiring skills and information when they are immediately needed for a specific task, problem, or situation. “Just-in-case knowledge” refers to learning skills and information in preparation for future needs. Both approaches have their advantages. Why is this knowledge important? A lot of people read, watch videos, and consume information that they are unlikely to put into practice. This knowledge is more of an entertainment source than it is a learned skill. We are more likely to change a light bulb than apply survival tactics when faced with a lion. There’s nothing wrong with knowing how to survive a lion attack, but it’s very unlikely that you’ll use that knowledge. People who prioritize this type of knowledge are also prone to procrastination. They focus solely on what could happen. This keeps them in an endless cycle of worry and anxiety that prevents them from accomplishing the goals they’ve set for themselves. We prioritize just-in-time knowledge and reference Tim Ferris, who said, “Prefer just-in-time knowledge over just-in-case knowledge.” 3. Do and Reflect Getting things done while learning relevant aspects is good for our growth. Reflection gives us new perspectives of ourselves that allow us to analyze and improve on areas we are weak. It is important to see your goals through. Doing so staves off doubt, depression, and anxiety. It builds your character in the process, putting you in a position to continually improve. Resist the temptation to quit or give up. Do not second-guess yourself by wondering if you should do something else instead. Guard your mind against self-doubt and stay focused on the task at hand. Take action over your patterns, routines, and nuances. Don’t allow complacency to creep in as it can drain you of all your potential, leaving you depressed and unfulfilled. Adapt to changing circumstances and build on routines that make you better. 4. Building Confidence & Embracing the Unknown The action involves stepping into the unknown. Embracing uncertainty allows us to confront fears and doubts that hinder progress. Navigating through uncharted territories is scary and unpleasant. However, doing so builds and grows confidence. This confidence stems from realizing we can overcome challenges and learn from them. Overthinking can create worst-case scenarios that fill us with fear. Fear can hold you back from achieving your potential. Take the leap of faith into the unknown, and overcome the challenges that await you. For too long, the siren song of data mesh has lured companies into a false sense of security, promising a utopian future of seamless data management. But the harsh reality is sinking in: data mesh isn't the panacea it's cracked up to be. As costs soar, trust in data erodes, and decision-making stalls, it's time to shatter the illusion and explore a new path forward. For many organizations, the allure of data mesh, a decentralized approach to data management, has turned into a frustrating chase. While it promised data democratization and agility, the reality often involves siloed data, soaring costs, and eroded trust in data-driven decision-making. A recent implementing data mesh experienced significant data quality issues. Surveys paint a concerning picture: survey by Unisphere Research, a division of Information Today, Inc., in partnership with ChaosSearch, found that 68% of IT managers Another survey conducted by revealed that struggled with increased complexity and lack of collaboration after adopting data mesh. PwC in 2023 72% of businesses "Data mesh, in theory, sounds great," says Experts are also raising concerns: Zhamak Dehghani, a renowned data management consultant and author of the book 'Data Mesh: Delivering Data-Driven Value in the Age of Big Data.' "However, the reality is that many organizations lack the cultural and organizational maturity to successfully implement it, leading to fragmented data landscapes and inconsistent data practices." Clearer Ownership: Data Marketplace Principals Here are my 8 principles for using the data marketplace concept that will ensure your organization leverages the right data at the right time to make the right decisions: - In the marketplace, we keep the data producers owners of the data they produce, but they do not own the data products built on top of it, which I think is a fear thing. Decentralized Data Ownership One of my biggest criticisms about data mesh is the decentralized ownership which requires now a front-end engineer and a product manager to own a data product based on their data, they are required to design and maintain it, and they have zero clue why they do it, or how it’s being used, and if I will be honest, none of the tools they used is actually native to their work. Instead, it just lets them set up the events or APIs calls, sets them with the tools to document what they send, to ingest the data without them touching anything, and from there, lets the experts work with it. This system makes more sense as they only need to worry that the data is correct and reliable and are not required to fix data products gone wrong. -  Yes, please stop storing all the data warehouses! Even if it’s S3 and “cheap,” there is no reason to store so much and process so much data; the reality is that most of this data is just sitting there getting dust. Transactional-based data By decentralizing the data, we allow the owners to decide what they store. With the marketplace, I wish to take a different approach: the analysts, the middle people between the data consumers and producers can see all the data produced in the company, but they can decide what data to buy and sign a “contract” with the producer which describe basically what they will use the data, what are their expectations and what happens in case of a data incident. By doing so, we ensure that the producers understand why they produce the data and what impact it has on the organization, and allow us to clean unused data either into deep storage or into the abyss by deleting it, and the analysts on the other side need to create a value case to why this data is important for them to use. It’s creating a win-win situation that also addresses the missing link between the data producers and analysts on who using the data in the data lake structure, these transactions are logged and stored. - Basic rules must be in the game, what is the metadata required, how and where to document the data ingested, produced, and visualized, what monitors should be in place to ensure quality, how the data contracts are created, and how data anomalies, incidents, and conflicts are handled; by doing, so we ensure we standardized the process. Robust Governance & Standards I see a big need to have 2-3 types of data contracts but enforce that every data created has a schema validation process to ensure quality, and in case of an issue, it’s rejected, and notifications are sent to the owner of it to be aware “Huston we have a problem.” Governance is important, and also, the enforcement of the regulation keeps this thing running with strong work-frames that address the use cases of data and serve as a system for future-proofing the data products. - Let’s talk architecture to make the data marketplace successful by creating three “isolated” levels of data on the data warehouse system; each level is accessible and usable based on the skills and expertise of the individuals and is meant to act as a safe net for data consumption: Isolated Architecture Environments serves as a secure storage for all data, regardless of quality, to ensure sensitive information protection. Think of it as a vault for safeguarding all types of data. Data then undergoes preparation steps like defining sessions, identifying bots, and ensuring compliance before being transformed into a usable format for analysis. This process can be compared to transforming raw ingredients into a ready-to-use meal for a chef. The Raw Data Zone empowers analysts by providing access to the prepared data through aggregated tables. Analysts can utilize exploration tools to query, analyze, and gain insights from the data. This zone, along with the tools it provides, plays a crucial role in enabling analysts to create valuable decision-making dashboards. The Marketplace Data Zone serves as a single source of truth for the entire company. This zone contains rigorously tested, secured, and verified data presented through user-friendly visualizations. Anyone in the company can access and explore this data in a controlled environment, either directly via the provided tools or by extracting it for use in tools like Excel. The Decision-making Zone The data here is deemed the "official" version - any conflicting information from other sources should be considered inaccurate. Data that enters the data lake has one access point where the data is validated, is it what needs to be here, the data is checked for anomalies, and only if it passes the inspection, it will arrive in a raw data landing zone; then from there, the data will have small components that will run and clean for bot traffic, add attribution to the session, or even enrich missing metadata to ensure the data can be used. When it arrives to the data consumers, they will only see the data that was certified pre-calculated, and built, to enable the look and feel of a self-exploration environment without the fear of losing control over the numbers because “Self-serve analytics” is a nice dream but will never become reality due to the level of data literacy in the organizations. - Based on the above and the transaction-based, why in hell should we have a push system where anyone interested can just push data into the lake or a dashboard? Pull System We need to bring back control over the data and have a purpose and a clear why; otherwise, we’re just wasting money on moving data around. I am sure your cloud provider is happy and also convincing you this is cheap if you buy the right saving plans, but in reality, you have nothing to do with the data sitting there collecting dust. Some industry standards estimate that around 87% of the data ingested into the data lake have no clear purpose or use case; think about the amount of money you are spending right now on having it stored. The pull system ensures that only those with purpose arrive at the common areas and are used. Otherwise, it will just become history in a short period saving you a lot of money on wasted accomilated data. - The data domain subject matter experts are the ones who can build data products from the raw data and move it into the marketplace zone, or approve a new data product from the marketplace zone into the decision-making zone. Data Parliaments In the data mesh, one of the biggest issues is that anyone can pull data and build a data product with it, but this sometimes causes cases of data not matching or worse decisions to be made over wrong data. The parliament members can be, for example, responsible only for the marketplace revenue tables; they are the only ones who know how to define the true source of the revenue, how to present it, and also how to handle issues with its quality when things go wrong. On the other side, a parliament can handle the company KPIs table and will know which data in the marketplace is the one true source. Contrary to data mesh, we create a function of data controllers who validate that the marketplace has one true source of data, so each analyst using the marketplace zone knows they are using the right data, and they are the ones that ensure the correct data is carried across the company. This also answers the governance being overwhelmed with so many topics they need to manage and helps them focus on the work-frames and the parliaments on the data products. - This is a vital part if we wish to ensure people in the organization consume the right data and make decisions based on the best available data to them. Data Certification We need to certify the data; the certification process allows us to, on the one side, ensure that we have one, revenue numbers used in the decision-making zone, and also ensure it has the right process behind it from data monitoring to error handling and up to how it should be documented. The certification of the data ensures that everyone knows what the correct number is and has the trust that the data has all the required steps to ensure its reliability and trustworthiness; one of the things I met the most is the missing trust of leaders in the data they consume to make decisions, and this mistrust causes them to doubt the data and ask analysts to check it constantly whenever it doesn’t fit their expectation, wasting a lot of time of the analysts on debugging. But by creating a data certification, we can ensure that, in case of a data incident, the user will know it before it’s being used, and the analysts will know where they need to look to solve it. Basically, creates better trust between the data consumers to the analysts, and in case the data incident is not fixed where the problem is and who is blocking it from being resolved, creating full transparency and accountability over the data. Return on investment! We spoke earlier on transactions and explained the use case. Well, with that, we need to have some system that evaluates the effort invested in creating a data product, the storage, the processing, the analyst time invested, the cost of maintaining it on the one side, and on the other, the possible profits by having the data. ROI - I agree here that not every data source will have it, but I will argue it’s possible :-). By having, for example, the campaign performance on Facebook, we can optimize the campaigns and invest more money in campaigns that drive more profit or cut campaigns that waste money. By doing so, we save and increase the revenue, and it can go into the calculation. Another example is by finance having the AWS costs available, they can find areas to improve savings either by buying saving plans or investigating high costs and possibly reducing them. Another method to evaluate the revenue of the data is by incrementally testing; having this data means you can save or generate X amount of extra money; if not, this is the amount of money lost. The ROI gives everyone in the chain of the data a know what the value of their data is and also the ability to evaluate how to prioritize a data incident with a clear or estimated monetary value next to it. More data does not equal better insights; it just means more time lost on making decisions, more time wasted on bad data, and the bad thing, loss of focus; here is what I am trying to correct with my data marketplace concept. - Focus on the data that make sense for the organization to make decisions. Focus Not all events and all data sources are relevant, and most definitely, having more data does not mean you will be able to make better decisions. Focusing on a small amount of highly relevant KPIs will help the business oriented around what is working or not, will ensure higher focus on the quality of the data, and ensure everyone knows how their work impacted or not the success of the organization. - If you produce data, you need to know WHY you produce it and what is the added value of having it. Without having it in place, you waste money. WHY I don’t know how many times in my life as an analyst I was required to run some super expensive and complicated query that requested me to give some number or shares, but after asking what they were used for or what decisions they drove, I discovered that my three days work was “Just for good to know” and had no impact what so ever on the decision making or actions taken. I am thinking a lot about the wasted time of analysts answering questions that do not serve a real purpose and the amount of time gone on checking the data quality and compatibility, understanding it, and then trying to run the most efficient query, and it all goes with action. - People should be able to self-serve themselves, and no, when I talk about self-serve, I am not talking about this drag and drop that we all fall in love with from Google Analytics. Data usability What I mean is that if you are an analyst or data consumer, you should have the right tools and access to data based on your skills and expertise. I do not wish to see data consumers playing with raw data and trying to drive learning without knowing what can be the results of them using the numbers they encounter; at the same time, I do wish to see it. Even if you create more work-frames around the data mesh, the reality is that when you ask the wrong people to do the right things without the expertise, you increase their anxiety levels to handle situations they are not ready for, and worse, you cause them to lose focus on what their unit purpose is, and for this, you are wasting more growth opportunities. Hiring more data engineers and data product managers won’t solve your problem; training unrelated people to own data products will fail. I call you to try something new, reduce the noise from data increase your focus, and if you want, after you master the data marketplace and the delicate balance between centralized to decentralized, you can go in the direction of data mesh. But all the time you don’t, you risk accumulating more costs in lost revenues and overspending on data the decision is yours! The rain had held up, but the east wind blew mercilessly in from the sea, cutting to bone and marrow. Spring was late in spite of its early promise, and there was even yet a hard drift of old snow and ice in the northern corner of the graveyard. Lida Marsh, who had come up to bring the manse a mess of herring, slipped in through the gate shivering. She belonged to the fishing village at the harbour mouth and her father had, for thirty years, made a practice of sending a mess from his first spring catch to the manse. He never darkened a church door; he was a hard drinker and a reckless man, but as long as he sent those herring up to the manse every spring, as his father had done before him, he felt comfortably sure that his account with the Powers That Govern was squared for the year. He would not have expected a good mackerel catch if he had not so sent the first fruits of the season. Lida was a mite of ten and looked younger, because she was such a small, wizened little creature. To-night, as she sidled boldly enough up to the manse girls, she looked as if she had never been warm since she was born. Her face was purple and her pale-blue, bold little eyes were red and watery. She wore a tattered print dress and a ragged woollen comforter, tied across her thin shoulders and under her arms. She had walked the three miles from the harbour mouth barefooted, over a road where there was still snow and slush and mud. Her feet and legs were as purple as her face. But Lida did not mind this much. She was used to being cold, and she had been going barefooted for a month already, like all the other swarming young fry of the fishing village. There was no self-pity in her heart as she sat down on the tombstone and grinned cheerfully at Faith and Una. Faith and Una grinned cheerfully back. They knew Lida slightly, having met her once or twice the preceding summer when they had gone down the harbour with the Blythes. “Hello!” said Lida, “ain’t this a fierce kind of a night? ‘T’ain’t fit for a dog to be out, is it?” “Then why are you out?” asked Faith. “Pa made me bring you up some herring,” returned Lida. She shivered, coughed, and stuck out her bare feet. Lida was not thinking about herself or her feet, and was making no bid for sympathy. She held her feet out instinctively to keep them from the wet grass around the tombstone. But Faith and Una were instantly swamped with a wave of pity for her. She looked so cold—so miserable. “Oh, why are you barefooted on such a cold night?” cried Faith. “Your feet must be almost frozen.” “Pretty near,” said Lida proudly. “I tell you it was fierce walking up that harbour road.” “Why didn’t you put on your shoes and stockings?” asked Una. “Hain’t none to put on. All I had was wore out by the time winter was over,” said Lida indifferently. For a moment Faith stated in horror. This was terrible. Here was a little girl, almost a neighbour, half frozen because she had no shoes or stockings in this cruel spring weather. Impulsive Faith thought of nothing but the dreadfulness of it. In a moment she was pulling off her own shoes and stockings. “Here, take these and put them right on,” she said, forcing them into the hands of the astonished Lida. “Quick now. You’ll catch your death of cold. I’ve got others. Put them right on.” Lida, recovering her wits, snatched at the offered gift, with a sparkle in her dull eyes. Sure she would put them on, and that mighty quick, before any one appeared with authority to recall them. In a minute she had pulled the stockings over her scrawny little legs and slipped Faith’s shoes over her thick little ankles. “I’m obliged to you,” she said, “but won’t your folks be cross?” “No—and I don’t care if they are,” said Faith. “Do you think I could see any one freezing to death without helping them if I could? It wouldn’t be right, especially when my father’s a minister.” “Will you want them back? It’s awful cold down at the harbour mouth—long after it’s warm up here,” said Lida slyly. “No, you’re to keep them, of course. That is what I meant when I gave them. I have another pair of shoes and plenty of stockings.” Lida had meant to stay awhile and talk to the girls about many things. But now she thought she had better get away before somebody came and made her yield up her booty. So she shuffled off through the bitter twilight, in the noiseless, shadowy way she had slipped in. As soon as she was out of sight of the manse she sat down, took off the shoes and stockings, and put them in her herring basket. She had no intention of keeping them on down that dirty harbour road. They were to be kept good for gala occasions. Not another little girl down at the harbour mouth had such fine black cashmere stockings and such smart, almost new shoes. Lida was furnished forth for the summer. She had no qualms in the matter. In her eyes the manse people were quite fabulously rich, and no doubt those girls had slathers of shoes and stockings. Then Lida ran down to the Glen village and played for an hour with the boys before Mr. Flagg’s store, splashing about in a pool of slush with the maddest of them, until Mrs. Elliott came along and bade her begone home. “I don’t think, Faith, that you should have done that,” said Una, a little reproachfully, after Lida had gone. “You’ll have to wear your good boots every day now and they’ll soon scuff out.” “I don’t care,” cried Faith, still in the fine glow of having done a kindness to a fellow creature. “It isn’t fair that I should have two pairs of shoes and poor little Lida Marsh not have any. Now we both have a pair. You know perfectly well, Una, that father said in his sermon last Sunday that there was no real happiness in getting or having—only in giving. And it’s true. I feel far happier now than I ever did in my whole life before. Just think of Lida walking home this very minute with her poor little feet all nice and warm and comfy.” “You know you haven’t another pair of black cashmere stockings,” said Una. “Your other pair were so full of holes that Aunt Martha said she couldn’t darn them any more and she cut the legs up for stove dusters. You’ve nothing but those two pairs of striped stockings you hate so.” All the glow and uplift went out of Faith. Her gladness collapsed like a pricked balloon. She sat for a few dismal minutes in silence, facing the consequences of her rash act. “Oh, Una, I never thought of that,” she said dolefully. “I didn’t stop to think at all.” The striped stockings were thick, heavy, coarse, ribbed stockings of blue and red which Aunt Martha had knit for Faith in the winter. They were undoubtedly hideous. Faith loathed them as she had never loathed anything before. Wear them she certainly would not. They were still unworn in her bureau drawer. “You’ll have to wear the striped stockings after this,” said Una. “Just think how the boys in school will laugh at you. You know how they laugh at Mamie Warren for her striped stockings and call her barber pole and yours are far worse.” “I won’t wear them,” said Faith. “I’ll go barefooted first, cold as it is.” “You can’t go barefooted to church to-morrow. Think what people would say.” “Then I’ll stay home.” “You can’t. You know very well Aunt Martha will make you go.” Faith did know this. The one thing on which Aunt Martha troubled herself to insist was that they must all go to church, rain or shine. How they were dressed, or if they were dressed at all, never concerned her. But go they must. That was how Aunt Martha had been brought up seventy years ago, and that was how she meant to bring them up. “Haven’t you got a pair you can lend me, Una?” said poor Faith piteously. Una shook her head. “No, you know I only have the one black pair. And they’re so tight I can hardly get them on. They wouldn’t go on you. Neither would my gray ones. Besides, the legs of them are all darned and darned.” “I won’t wear those striped stockings,” said Faith stubbornly. “The feel of them is even worse than the looks. They make me feel as if my legs were as big as barrels and they’re so scratchy.” “Well, I don’t know what you’re going to do.” “If father was home I’d go and ask him to get me a new pair before the store closes. But he won’t be home till too late. I’ll ask him Monday—and I won’t go to church tomorrow. I’ll pretend I’m sick and Aunt Martha’ll have to let me stay home.” “That would be acting a lie, Faith,” cried Una. “You can’t do that. You know it would be dreadful. What would father say if he knew? Don’t you remember how he talked to us after mother died and told us we must always be true, no matter what else we failed in. He said we must never tell or act a lie—he said he’d trust us not to. You can’t do it, Faith. Just wear the striped stockings. It’ll only be for once. Nobody will notice them in church. It isn’t like school. And your new brown dress is so long they won’t show much. Wasn’t it lucky Aunt Martha made it big, so you’d have room to grow in it, for all you hated it so when she finished it?” “I won’t wear those stockings,” repeated Faith. Setting her teeth, she stepped upon it and stood there. “What are you doing?” cried Una aghast. “You’ll catch your death of cold, Faith Meredith.” “I’m trying to,” answered Faith. “I hope I’ll catch a fearful cold and be awful sick to-morrow. Then I won’t be acting a lie. I’m going to stand here as long as I can bear it.” “But, Faith, you might really die. You might get pneumonia. Please, Faith don’t. But, Jerry, she may die.” “Faith,” said Jerry, “get off that ice-bank or I’ll pull you off.” “Pull away,” dared Faith. Jerry sprang at her and caught her arms. He pulled one way and Faith pulled another. Una ran behind Faith and pushed. Faith stormed at Jerry to leave her alone. Jerry stormed back at her not to be a dizzy idiot; and Una cried. They made no end of noise and they were close to the road fence of the graveyard. Henry Warren and his wife drove by and heard and saw them. Very soon the Glen heard that the manse children had been having an awful fight in the graveyard and using most improper language. Meanwhile, Faith had allowed herself to be pulled off the ice because her feet were aching so sharply that she was ready to get off any way. They all went in amiably and went to bed. Faith slept like a cherub and woke in the morning without a trace of a cold. She felt that she couldn’t feign sickness and act a lie, after remembering that long-ago talk with her father. But she was still as fully determined as ever that she would not wear those abominable stockings to church. I struggled to comprehend DEFI from the perspective of a newcomer, often feeling lost and confused. Every time I attempted to grasp it, the complexity seemed to grow. However, I decided to dedicate focused time to studying and gaining a comprehensive understanding. Through this process, I discovered that there are two distinct approaches to understanding DEFI: as a crypto trader or enthusiast and as a complete beginner. DEFI and Cryptocurrency Allow me to elaborate on these two positions. DEFI, or decentralized finance, emerged as a solution to the limitations of traditional cryptocurrencies. It can be considered as crypto 2.0 or "crypto-promax." DEFI originated from the shortcomings of cryptocurrencies themselves, as they could not fulfill certain financial functions. Hence, DEFI utilizes cryptocurrencies as its foundation. To help you grasp this concept, let me provide a different analogy: Think of blockchain as the father and cryptocurrencies as the mother of decentralized finance. Together, they strived to change the world and assist others. However, they faced challenges in realizing their vision. While blockchain acted as the breadwinner in the realm of  finance, cryptocurrencies had their own issues. They were unable to produce the desired outcomes, leading to limited impact and criticisms. Consequently, their collaborative efforts were labeled as a failed union or a futile endeavor. This analogy aims to emphasize that blockchain serves as the driving force behind decentralization, while cryptocurrencies are instrumental in achieving financial innovation. Currently, there is no other technology that offers comparable decentralized capabilities. To better comprehend DEFI as a beginner, I needed to establish a connection with its vision. As an individual who had never utilized cryptocurrencies or digital assets before, the concept did not initially excite me. I lacked the motivation to explore further, which hinders the development of necessary skills. A Journey Into Decentralized Finance However, I embarked on a journey to immerse myself in the vision of decentralized finance, despite being a non-crypto trader. As an introspective and analytical reader, I require a deep connection for concepts to make sense to me. Thus, I sought ways to relate to the idea of DEFI as a complete beginner. It proved challenging, given that DEFI is often regarded as crypto 2.0 or an advanced stage of cryptocurrencies. Therefore, I delved into understanding the true essence of decentralization in finance, examining its original purpose and the initial plan behind it. Throughout my research, I stumbled upon an eye-opening example within the context of Nigerian banks and their exorbitant charges. The amount of money these banks accumulate through various fees is staggering. Despite regulations mandating a maximum fee of 50 nairas, they often exceed this limit. I researched extensively, nearly penning an article on why Nigerians should embrace DEFI. However, I realized that my intended audience was the Web3 community, and I needed to tailor my writing to defi projects rather than advocate for crypto activism. Moreover, I explored the challenges faced by individuals seeking loans in Nigeria. The stringent requirements and credit score evaluations imposed by traditional banks highlighted the need for an alternative solution. Witnessing the financial struggles of ordinary Nigerians and comprehending their desperation reinforced the significance of DEFI. This research journey even led me to examine the 2008 financial crisis, which further emphasized the flaws of traditional banking systems. I gradually began to grasp the fundamental shortcomings of existing cryptocurrencies and the potential of DEFI to address these limitations. As my goal is to become a DEFI writer in the Web3 community, my focus lies in crafting pieces centered around DEFI projects and concepts. I aim to progress beyond the stage of being a beginner and gain deeper insights into DEFI. For instance, I have explored the concept of staking, which offers the opportunity to generate passive income through staking crypto assets. I envisioned creating a compelling Twitter thread that promotes the benefits of staking, encouraging people to explore this avenue for generating passive income and avoiding the volatile nature of crypto trading. This marked my transition from being a stage one newbie to a stage two learner. During my learning journey, I also encountered various threads discussing different protocols related to DEFI. Previously, these threads appeared incomprehensible to me, but now, I could understand the discussions and even engage with them. Although I still have much to learn, such as tokenomics and research tools, I have gained a solid understanding of the overarching DEFI concept. This improvement in knowledge demonstrates that the moment you delve into how DEFI enhances traditional crypto, you are already learning DEFI. To summarize, the best-case scenario is a crypto trader who decides to explore DEFI. By simply starting to use platforms like Uniswap instead of Coinbase and gaining a basic understanding, they embark on their DEFI learning journey. It's important to note that there is no such thing as a complete newbie in DEFI. You either fall into the category of being unfamiliar, i.e., a total stranger to blockchain, crypto, and DEFI altogether, or vested in crypto one way or the other but a beginner in the realm of DEFI.

From Confusion to Clarity - How I Learned to Understand DEFI

When I first embarked on my crypto journey, I felt like a traveler with half a map. Despite my roots in traditional finance, which provided some initial clarity, the technological aspects were murky. The jargon felt opaque, if not totally impregnable. Not to mention, the prevailing sentiment among enthusiasts appeared to be that crypto’s interlocking economies were to operate on an erratic clockwork. Coming from a world where markets opened and closed with the ring of the bell, this accelerated, decentralized model of transacting felt as dizzying to comprehend as the words themselves. expected But that’s old hat now. After riding out the waves of Terra/Luna, FTX, and the ongoing rumblings in the banks and regulatory landscape, I like to think I’ve earned my stripes. But I bring this up because it’s a perspective I don’t want to forget. After fully assimilating into a new environment and beginning to understand its movements, it can be easy to repress the work it took to achieve that confidence. If it’s helpful (and you work in crypto), imagine trying to explain your current role to an entry-level you. While this can feel daunting, keep that person in sharp focus. That’s your audience. Let’s perhaps start by being honest: to the uninitiated, crypto complicated. How could it not be? Sitting at the intersection of technology, finance, and cryptography (think ciphers, codebreaking), even carefully written content can quickly collapse under its own weight. To make matters worse, this can become a self-fulfilling prophecy, where the expectation of a knowledge-gap cements the experience of alienation for would-be users. Whether by assuming too much of the reader, or presenting a dense thicket of information, there are plenty of ways for content to shepard curious participants to get lost in their feeds. is To be fair, this phenomenon is not unique to the crypto space. Every industry has its own, shifting vernacular. Maintaining a voice in corporate communications often requires a new vocabulary and syntax with each career progression. Since securing my own footing, I’ve made it a priority to extend clear, concise hospitality to all those seeking a safe port of call along their DeFi journeys. Below are a few key principles to consider when crafting content that nurtures curious participants, and encourages conversations beyond theoretical profits. Cut Confusion Imagine the difference between a game of hopscotch versus jumping from rock to rock across a river. While one is an ordered, viable pathway, the other is an ad hoc, haphazard endeavor at best. These are rough encapsulations of the two most common experiences new participants face when entering the ecosystem. However, industry leaders can help users avoid the latter by thoughtfully presenting processes in a sequential order, and committing to that structure in their materials. Is discussing staking before wallets the most logical choice for educational content? What’s better to define first: hash rate or rollups? Making deliberate choices, and approaching the content through the eyes of your less-experienced self is paramount to constructing a firm foundation, and scaffolding future knowledge. At a base level, leaders should prioritize providing clear explanations, and introducing new concepts piecemeal to help gradually focus the aperture of user understanding. In turn, participants who are better versed in how systems and services interact will enjoy greater literacy to parse signals from the noise. Given the overwhelming amount of data generated in the crypto space, the ability to differentiate between useful resources, and erroneous or potentially harmful ones can be invaluable to determining one’s overall success. Not only will this encourage greater consensus among one’s readership, but it leaves the conversation open for community updates when new or developing information becomes available. That way, users can prioritize charting their next movements with confidence, and hopefully avoid getting wet feet. Draw Comparisons Despite the always-on nature of the media’s buzz around innovation, truly disruptive technologies are in fact a rare commodity. Often, a contributing factor to the allure of these developments is the exponential growth compared to prior iterations. This presents a unique challenge for communicators to make the new and unprecedented feel familiar and approachable. Early descriptions of automobiles are a great example of industry meeting its audience in their comfort zone. While “horseless carriage” is an incomplete description of a car by contemporary standards, at the time, this helped bridge the gap in the public's understanding of these new contraptions. Think about it: who considering crypto hasn’t also used a vending machine? Wash. Rinse. And repeat. Prioritize the “Why” The notion that “crypto’s a solution looking for a problem” is a common refrain for folks who don’t understand the merits of the industry. However, there’s work to be done among the community to better articulate the functional purpose that many projects aim to provide. For example, coverage that only assesses the price movements of assets fails to capture or interrogate the purpose of their existence. Such surface level analysis runs the risk of allowing curious users to walk away thinking the crypto ecosystem turns on speculative value alone. Just how regulated, vetted exchanges do their part to protect their corner of the ecosystem, platformed voices should work to elevate the conversation, and cultivate inquisitive behaviors among their audiences. By peering behind the shock and awe of an asset’s performance, assiduous researchers stand to gain unique perspectives on potential investments. Build a big tent Much like the assets themselves, the presence and prestige of the crypto industry has had its ups and downs. It’s telling that veterans of the community will often signal their activity in relation to a bull-run or high-profile bankruptcy. Typically, these moments correlate with the industry reorienting its pitch to the public. When markets were booming, we saw stadiums and Super Bowl ads spreading FOMO with the help of household names. As we’ve seen, not all those endorsements have aged favorably. While it’s unfortunate that the industry writ large has had to suffer for the actions of a few misguided individuals, there’s a lesson here about what type of posture the space should set for itself. Rather than vacillating between aggressive marketing campaigns and issuing aftermath mea culpas, industry leaders should strive to walk a more reasonable line from the onset to avoid ricochets in perception. If your product or solution helps streamline a crypto service, users should be given insight into how these systems work to bolster their overall understanding of the digital economy. “Showing versus telling” is a common adage of writerly advice that should be applied across the space. In turn, rather than simply saying your products are intuitive, safe, and efficient, break down how their makeup achieves these goals. Similar to laying out information in a thoughtful order, educating your audience about ongoing developments will allow them to better approach and navigate a shifting landscape.
