“Should I go open source?” Contributing to open-source projects can be a really beneficial way for those with little professional experience to gain ‘visibility’ and ‘exposure’ within the technology field. It is like building a portfolio, you can really show any potential employers what you can do by contributing to some of the pivotal open-source projects that exist. However, I would also advise these newcomers to be mindful of empty promises and companies that might say they are creating an ‘open-source’ project, but in fact are then using it to take advantage of free labour by making money from the product later. What do we mean by open-source? It is any code that can be used and modified freely by anyone on the internet. However, it isn’t just any code that anybody writes. To be an open-source project, you need to an open-source license. have Make open-source programming just one part of your game. Use it to get your name out there, but don’t sit waiting for a company to come shower you with money. Use it as an opportunity to gain experience, build a portfolio and demonstrate your skills. And if a company decides to employ you - then you’re lucky! Making it on the global scene as a young African technologist The key thing is to focus on developing your skill, becoming good at what you do, and staying focussed on your path. If networking is your thing, then stay focussed on it and keep on top of any new technologies and frameworks that will grow you within the networking field. For example, these days with cloud computing, your networking skills (which were previously best used for local networks) can be taken to a whole new level, like in cloud networking. There is huge potential within Africa itself, without needing to look at other markets for answers. The best advice I can give people is rather than spending all of your young years desperately trying to win a job in a global company, see what difference you can make within technology in your country or region. We are already seeing the growth and success of commercial African apps, from payments to delivery services. Within The Gambia, we see apps like TayBullPay, KashMa, and Chopser. The market in Africa is growing, and it is best that African people capitalise on that first, before other international players take over the scene. More importantly, however, African people need to use this key moment as an opportunity to learn high quality business practices and develop technology businesses that will make Africa leaders on the scene. What makes a good business? For many people who start businesses, their main focus is profitability. I would argue that this can work in the short term, but to make a robust, sustainable business, profitability is only the 4th or 5th factor on the list. Before you even start the business, you need to bring the correct mindset - a sharp focus on your customers, and on sustainability. When you make customers the focus, you make sure that the business you develop is one that people actually need, and will therefore stay loyal to and keep coming back to. You build trusting relationships with these people, which will help grow your business over the long-term much more than giveaways and costly advertising initiatives. Sustainability as a core focus is undeniably one of the most important parts of business that will last. We can talk about financial sustainability, in the context of having diverse income streams and strong mechanisms from the beginning that ensure that you won’t go bust after your initial funding rounds. However, we can extend the sustainability principle to look at how you manage your people (do you want your employees to be happy and healthy and stay with you for years, or to run after 6 months because of the exhausting conditions?), how we impact the business ecosystem (are we coming in fast to take over a market share?) and what factors we consider when creating our products (environmental, community and so on). Though this may sound in opposition to traditional thinking around business, especially within the technology field these considerations are more important than any - we are now seeing the results of what happens when technology companies are left unregulated. Which brings us back to the topic of . open-source technology The open-source mindset A very animated at the Civo Navigate conference on the state of open-source programming today, brought attention to some very important points about the consequences of different approaches to technology businesses. Open-source started with some key principles: maintaining a healthy and active community, being wholeheartedly transparent with information and materials, working in a totally collaborative environment, and being inclusive in its practices whilst also recognising and distinguishing quality programmers. discussion However, with the growth of technology and the accessibility of starting technology businesses, many of these principles have been taken over by commercial interests. Open-source programmers who have in the past continued maintaining projects without expectation of return, are now questioning why they are doing this when companies are profiting off their time. My advice to any new technologists would be to see their career within technology as different pathways: You can develop your own projects and contribute to open-source projects as a way of building your portfolio and skill, your personal brand. This can assist you in whatever you choose to do within technology. You can take part in training and education programmes and apply for jobs within the technology market, though be aware that many of the global jobs are difficult to access for the average African. You can create your own businesses, by providing IT services or developing a tech product that meets the needs of the consumer. This is one of the best pathways to support the long-term growth of technology in Africa. Each of these pathways doesn’t guarantee anything except that you will level up in your skills and knowledge, and have a better chance of reaching your career goals. You can try each pathway and see which one suits you, though I would be wary of trying them all at once. And every step of the way, you should always remember that community is one of the most important ways you will reach success in the field - sitting alone with your computer will only get you so far. Africa: Careers in Technology

Kubernetes autoscaling was supposed to be easy. Even though one of the selling points of Kubernetes is scaling, the built-in autoscaling support is basic at best. You can only scale based on CPU or memory consumption, anything more advanced requires additional tooling that is often not trivial. The Gimlet.io team put together this blog to show common usecases of autoscaling: based on CPU custom Prometheus metrics and RabbitMQ queue length Furthermore, we are aiming to clear up the differences between the Horizontal Pod Autoscaler (HPA), the Prometheus Adapter and KEDA. Let's get into it shall we? First, about the Horizontal Pod Autoscaler (HPA). First, about the Horizontal Pod Autoscaler (HPA) The Horizontal Pod Autoscaler, or HPA in short, is a Kubernetes resource that allows you to scale your application based on resource utilization such as CPU and memory. To be more precise, HPA is a general purpose autoscaler, but by default only CPU and memory metrics are available for it to scale on. Its data source is the Kubernetes Metrics API, which by the way also powers the command, and backed by data provided by the component. This component runs on your cluster and it is installed by default on GKE, AKS, CIVO and k3s clusters, but it needs to be manually installed on many others, like on Digital Ocean, EKS and Linode. kubectl top metrics-server The HPA resource is moderately well documented in the Kubernetes documentation. Some confusion arises from the fact that there are blog posts out there showcasing different Kubernetes API versions: keep in mind that is not backwards compatible with v1! autoscaling/v2 More headaches arise when you try to scale on resource metrics other than CPU and memory. In order to scale pods - let's say - based on number of HTTP requests or queue length, you need to make the Kubernetes API aware of these metrics first. Luckily there are open-source metrics backends implemented, and the best known is Prometheus Adapter. Prometheus Adapter Prometheus Adapter is a Kubernetes Custom Metrics API implementation which exposes selected Prometheus metrics through the Kubernetes API for the Horizontal Pod Autoscaler (HPA) to scale on. Essentially you configure the Prometheus Adapter to read your desired metric from Prometheus, and it will serve it to HPA to scale on. This can be an HTTP request rate, or a RabbitMQ queue length or any metric from Prometheus. Prometheus Adapter does the job, but in our experience its configuration is cryptic. While there are several blog posts out there explaining its configuration syntax, we could not make it work sufficiently reliably with our custom metrics scaling needs. That is essentially why we have brought you here today, to share our experience with a Prometheus Adapter alternative, called KEDA. So, what exactly is KEDA, and why we prefer it? KEDA KEDA is a Kubernetes operator that is handling a user friendly custom yaml resource where you can define your scaling needs. In KEDA, you create a custom resource with the necessary information about the deployment you want to scale, then define the trigger event, which can be based on CPU and memory usage or on custom metrics. It has premade triggers for most anything that you may want to scale on, with a yaml structure that we think the Kubernetes API could have been made in the first place. ScaledObject KEDA does two things: it exposes the selected metrics to the Kubernetes Custom Metrics API - just like Prometheus Adapter and it creates the Horizontal Pod Autoscaler resource. Ultimately this HPA does the scaling. Now that you have an overview, let's take a step further and show how you can autoscale with KEDA!       value: "50" is where you refer to your deployment, and is where you define the metrics and threshold that will trigger the scaling. scaleTargetRef triggers In this sample we trigger based on the CPU usage, the will manage the number of replicas automatically for you and maintain a maximum 50% CPU usage per pod. Plaintiffs Fail to State a Civil Conspiracy Claim. Civil conspiracy “is not a cause of action, but a legal doctrine that imposes liability on persons who, although not actually committing a tort themselves, share with the immediate tortfeasors a common plan or design in its perpetration.” Applied Equip. Corp. v. Litton Saudi Arabia Ltd., 7 Cal. 4th 503, 510-11 (1994). To plead a conspiracy, plaintiffs must allege “(1) the formation and operation of the conspiracy, (2) the wrongful act or acts done pursuant thereto, and (3) the damage resulting from such act or acts.” Wasco Prods., Inc. v. Southwall Techs., Inc., 435 F.3d 989, 992 (9th Cir. 2006) (cleaned up). Further, such allegations “must be made within the sections of the complaint that contain plaintiff’s claims for the underlying torts.” AccuImage Diagnostics Corp. v. Terarecon, Inc., 260 F. Supp. 2d 941, 947-48 (N.D. Cal. 2003) Because a conspiracy charge seeks to hold parties liable for the conduct of others, courts impose a heightened standard at the pleading stage: “[P]laintiff must more clearly allege specific action on the part of each defendant that corresponds to the elements of a conspiracy cause of action” and “cannot indiscriminately allege that conspiracies existed between and among all defendants.” AccuImage, 260 F. Supp. 2d at 947-48 (emphasis added); see also Ho Myung Moolsan Co. v. Manitou Mineral Water, Inc., 665 F. Supp. 2d 239, 256 (S.D.N.Y. 2009). Plaintiffs’ conspiracy claim fails because this is not an independent cause of action. See Accuimage, 260 F. Supp. 2d at 947 (dismissing conspiracy claim with prejudice because “plaintiff cannot plead conspiracy as an independent cause of action”); see also 5 B. Witkin, Summary of California Law, Torts § 44 (9th ed.1988) (“Strictly speaking, however, there is no separate tort of civil conspiracy.”). Plaintiffs’ conspiracy claim should be dismissed on this ground alone. Separately, the conspiracy claim fails because the complaint does not identify the role of each Defendant in the formation and operation of the alleged conspiracy, the wrongful acts done by each Defendant, or anything else about the alleged conspiracy, other than four paragraphs of boilerplate allegations. (See Compl. ¶¶ 241-244.) Plaintiffs allege vaguely that “[Defendants] agreed to a common plan or design to create, sell, and run Copilot to commit and conceal [various] tortious acts.” (Id. ¶ 244.) These allegations, which indiscriminately allege that conspiracies existed among all Defendants, do not satisfy the substantial showing required at the pleading stage. See e.g., AccuImage, 260 F. Supp. at 947-48 (dismissing conspiracy claim with prejudice, in part, because plaintiff provided “only vague details” about the conspiracies). In addition, the complaint does not satisfy the “wrongful acts” element upon which the conspiracy claim is based. To establish a “wrongful act,” plaintiffs must satisfy all elements of some other tort or wrong. Gen. Am. Life Ins. Co. v. Rana, 769 F. Supp. 1121, 1125 (N.D. Cal. 1991). As detailed above, Plaintiffs cannot allege a violation of any of the laws on which they premise their civil conspiracy claim. Finally, “agents and employees of a corporation cannot conspire with their corporate principal or employer where they act in their official capacities,” AccuImage, 260 F. Supp. 2d at 947, nor can a corporate parent and subsidiary conspire together, Laxalt v. McClatchy, 622 F. Supp. 737, 745-46 (D. Nev. 1985) (dismissing conspiracy claim against corporation and its wholly owned subsidiaries and employees). That is to say: if the opposition (especially an AI-driven opponent) has no idea how to utilize these plethora of new tools and weapons, they would be centuries behind your empire. No matter how many cities they founded or how far they extended their reach - the ways in which your nation outshone theirs would multiply exponentially. A quick and dirty setup would be to birth a Great Prophet followed almost immediately (maybe even the same turn, if you’re lucky) by another Great Prophet. You’d have a religion before anyone else! Or is that Civilization V? The solution to gaming is easy: change the rules. And bring back corporations and spies from the earlier games - much cooler, imho.
