Easy to Start Online Business Ideas: Post COVID-19 Business Opportunities

The earliest phases of a startup’s journey are treacherous. Product market fit is elusive. Opportunities, when they appear, can come from too many directions. Your financial runway grows shorter by the day. Usually in these times, you rightly seek outside advice to ensure you’re moving in the right direction. These opinions can sometimes be the assurances you need. But beware - you may find that the people giving you counsel may want strings attached. How do you distinguish between counsel that can cost you time, equity, and opportunity, vs. advice that can rocket you to the next phase of growth? Or as my guilty pleasure Food Network show , how do you distinguish the advisors who “Cook” vs the ones that “Con”? would say As a co-founder of two startups that were both acquired (one to Facebook & the other to Chegg), hopefully my experience can help you avoid some common mistakes. For our new gaming & learning project, we're only onboarding advisors that pass the below criteria. Solitaire Table stakes Let’s get this out of the way first: introductions. Advisors of all stripes can and should be helping you network with anyone and everyone. In some cases, these connections may turn out to be truly useful. But those are table stakes - an advisor that wants to trade on this value alone is an advisor that wants to work as little as possible to make you successful. Several years ago, I met someone who literally held up introductions until we discussed what’s in it for him. In his case, nothing - I got those intros elsewhere. Besides introductions, what else should you look out for when onboarding advisors? Your goals First figure out if this advisor makes sense for what you want to achieve. Do you need help on revenue? Product-market fit? Organizational design? Make sure you know what you want before agreeing to bring on the advisor. For example,  we had a strong B2C educational platform, and needed to get more insight into B2B sales. We found an advisor to help us navigate this market. Ultimately we both collectively determined that B2C was a better space for us, but we benefited from her guidance during that learning process. Subject matter expertise In the ideal world, an advisor is like the expensive consultant you happen to be friends with. Their subject matter expertise helps you overcome the hurdles you’ve outlined in your goals. An important caveat here: make sure the experience actually lines up. There are some industries, like advertising, that have multiple subsectors that seem similar but are different. For example, a large chunk of our business at Imagine Easy was advertising-based. But ad tech evolves so quickly that every few years you’re running something totally new. We had an advisor early on who had deep expertise in direct advertising, but that expertise just wasn’t relevant in an emerging and complex ad tech industry. Concrete examples One way of validating whether your potential advisor will be valuable is listening to how they speak about their experience. If you’re hearing platitudes that sound like your daily horoscope, you might find a psychic reading more cost-effective (just don’t go when Saturn is in retrograde). Instead, if you learn that when they added a registration wall at the beginning of their freemium workflow vs. the end, their a/b test showed a 70% decline in usage, you might find that valuable. Or if they also struggled with using Google Web Experiments too, and found better success with ruby’s library, that could save you and your team a lot of time and trouble. split Respect Sometimes wisdom breeds arrogance. Even if you’re one month into your new startup, you shouldn’t feel like your advisor is trying to grab the steering wheel away from you. Strong opinions are great (and can be a sign of passion), but if you don’t think this potential advisor is listening to your issues or addressing specifics, move on. Early on in our startup for EasyBib, we had an advisor tell us to sell to a better-financed competitor. When we rejected the advice, they were condescending, and we eventually parted ways. The well-financed competitor went broke a few years later, but we kept growing. Expectations When you do find an advisor that seems like a good fit, and the relationship is moving in a direction where having that advisor on board is valuable to your startup, make sure you discuss expectations. Generally speaking, you should be looking at giving no more than about 0.5%, with vesting, to an advisor (that’s worth about $125K if you sell your company for $25M). A good place to start is the The (FAST) document from Founders Institute. Founder Advisor Startup Template The bottom line is that you should expect consistent contributions from your advisor - whether that’s a day long brainstorming session, a few hours observing customers / teams, or just a meeting. Make sure you get someone consistent that can hold you accountable to your business. Of course, it also needs to make sense to your advisor - ensure you are fairly thinking about your business and that your advisor has to help. enough incentive Remember - the right advisors can be critical assets to your burgeoning startup. But there are also a lot of opportunists out there that would just love to hang out on your cap table. Startups: Beware Of Bad Advisors

Whatever follows, just reflects my understanding of the project, and my personal opinion on its future outlook. Today i will be writing about project and what its set out to do. Mainframe is heavily based on swarm/pss and hence i will go through swarm/pss in earlier part of this article to get some background to mainframe project itself. mainframe What is web3? web3 is simply decentralised web.So traditionally we all have been using web2 which is driven client-server architecture.Than it got enhanced a bit where we use cloud to host our servers.But centralisation still remained.Now we are trying to remove centralisation by using decentralised peer to peer architecture and thats called web3.Indicated below are couple of diagrams from this excellent . article Evolution from centralisation to decentralisation WEB3 decentralised stack Today we will be focusing on messaging aspect in above diagram indicated by whisper,telehash etc. In traditional centralised systems we have many commonly used messaging systems like activemq, kafka, qpid etc.Mainframe is set to provide one for decentralised systems. Iam going to explain about messaging for ethereum in this article.Messaging for other blockchains are out of scope. blockchain Swarm Network Swarm is a network of computers that share data with each other.Swarm network is cornerstone to what mainframe is building or has already built for ethereum blockchain. Swarm uses same p2p protocol as ethereum(devp2p) and the future vision is to have your eth node running both protocols(swarm and ethereum) and part of both networks.Swarm provides services such as file storage(like decentralised dropbox),decentralised database services and PSS(Postal Services over Storm).For this article we are most interested in PSS service provided by swarm. Postal Services over Swarm(PSS) PSS is a node to node messaging layer built on top of swarm network.There is already whisper messaging which is part of ethereum stack but its purpose is different and it routes messages between all nodes making it somewhat inefficient for direct node to node communication. PSS on top of swarm network for node to node messaging PSS uses message format defined by whisper protocol. Receipient address is partially specified in message so that its hard to snoop where the message is being sent to.Only node which are capable of decrypting will be able to read the message(both symmetric and asymmetric encryption are supported).This message forwarding will happen throughout the network till the timeout mentioned in message expires.In case of multicast, there wont be any address in message body and hence all nodes will read the message.You might be thinking that its inefficient way to route messages but devp2p uses something called kadelmia routing which makes this kind of routing efficient.More on that below. So whats the use of these messages?Every message belongs to a topic(remember queue and topic) and you can attach code to be executed to the topic.So whenever a message is published to topic, the code gets executed. Kadelmia Routing This is a kind of routing for p2p networks which uses distributed hash tables to maintain address of nearest nodes present in the network.Important thing here is node wont have connectivity to all nodes in the network but subset of nodes.So routing table of each node will contain addresses of exponentially distanced nodes and not every node present in a network. Kadelmia DHT As you can see in the diagram above, node 0 has addresses of only 1,2,4 and 8 Id nodes.In this way, lookups are very fast and node routing table don’t need to contain references to entire network.More info about how this lookup works are in this excellent video SWAP(Swarm Accounting Protocol for Service Wanted and Provided) SWAP is the accounting protocol using by PSS to incentivise nodes which participate in PSS network. Inspired by state channels, SWARM introduces a secure and scalable off-chain framework to support generic incentive systems playfully called ‘swap, swear and swindle’ games. The system relies on three pillars: communication, registration, and enforcement. (1) Peers engage in a local exchange (p2p communication) of data, promises, payments, messages, requests, deliveries etc. (swap) Peers will relay data between remote non-connected nodes to extend the scope of the network.(2) Participants pay a security deposit to a smart contract to back their promise of delivery and quality guarantees (swear). (3) Rules of service provision are enforced by a courtroom making nodes accountable in case of non-compliance (swindle). Implementation of the above is achieved by using chequebook smart contracts which is offchain payment.So nodes send cheques to each other.In mainframe world,MFT tokens are used to incentivise nodes More details in this excellent and mainframe whitepaper. video MainFrame Now lets focus on mainframe and what problems its trying to solve. Challenges in current day Internet Software :Since TCP/IP stack over which communication happens is easily traceable possible to trackdown where traffic has originated from with great accuracy.This will make it very hard to remain anonymous since geo coordinates can be easily identified. Addressing :Using services such as ,its very easy to takedown domains by centralised organisations such as Domain Name Registry whois ICANN TLS/SSL layer security is provided by like symantec, digicert etc.(Padlock in your browser navbar shows if site is over https and secure.Click on it to know valid certificate details).But issue here is its very easy to get a certificate from these centralised authorities once domain is compromised and someone takes control of it. Certificate Authorities: Certificate Authorities : Current day communication apps and software like whatsapp,skype,slack,gmail,facebook etc all works on client-server architecture and suffers from centralised software problem where all your data is under control of one entity.And thats not a good thing to go by the recent events such as cambridge analytica data hack etc. Communication Apps Mainframe communication platform Mainframe is an unstoppable communications platform that combines the desired features of today’s best networking protocols and applications while also maintaining the highest level of security and user sovereignty. The platform consists of various protocol and transport layers incentivized by token economies, along with software development kits(SDKs) enabling easy integration with a variety of popular languages, operating systems,and devices, as well as smart contracts and oracles for token exchange and ease of interoperability with various popular blockchains. Mainframe is built on Swarm/PSS and uses incentivization scheme based on SWAP protocol as explained above. Modeo Cheng is aiming to be a leader of this change as Lead Game Designer of . By designing Treaty, the world’s first blockchain-powered game introducing composable, in-game player agreements, he is working to disrupt the status quo and foster grassroots gaming innovation. Curio Research I spoke with Modeo about the paradigm shift happening in the industry, the potential for fully on-chain games, and creating a new era of gaming experiences. Please tell us a bit about yourself and how you got into blockchain gaming and Web3. I’m a big strategy gamer who has experience playing thousands of hours of games such as Football Manager, Civ, and Hearts of Iron. Currently, I am a Computer Science student at UC Berkeley, but I have dropped out to fully focus on Curio and our game, Treaty. I have a passion for research, and in 2020, I worked on a few research projects exploring regulations on freelance platforms and the impact of open innovation on gig economies. Through this experience, I discovered how certain platforms might pose concerns for gig workers, underscoring the importance of decentralized systems. In 2021, I joined Smrti Lab as an analyst to research tokenomics and evaluate game projects, which led me to realize the potential for blockchain to disrupt gaming. Currently, at Curio, I lead the game design and have developed the vision for Treaty. What is the current state of on-chain gaming in your view? What key problems are you solving at Curio? On-chain games have completed their first cycle. In my opinion, the last generation of on-chain games, known as GameFi, has become obsolete. None of their economic models have been successful. They claim everyone can profit from playing the game. However, few users pay to consume their content, which effectively makes them Ponzi schemes that don’t work. This is disappointing, and I sympathize with those who feel that on-chain games are fraudulent. On-chain games have much greater potential than financial derivatives. Developers are taking bold steps to build fully on-chain games, where both assets and the entire game logic exist on the blockchain. This shift towards fully on-chain games unlocks composability and game autonomy far beyond what traditional studios can offer. To realize our vision, we are addressing some key challenges. We are creating a new type of game that does not exist on the market currently. Therefore, we are building many novel components from scratch. Our game design approach differs significantly from that of most studios. Rather than devising rules around an existing game template, we derive them from our envisioned game experiences and test them through tabletop simulations. Our methodology leans heavily on first principles, choosing to reinvent and innovate rather than merely enhance what existing games offer. To achieve our goals, we are working hard to solve some of the toughest technical challenges in this field. Our demo launch earlier this year showed us that the current EVM framework is very restrictive for game performance, and it is impossible to make significant improvements without modifying the architecture. To tackle that, we are developing our own custom rollup framework, , on top of the EVM. Keystone Treaty, the game you’ve built at Curio, involves a functional social layer, enabling in-game social interactions between players. Is that correct? Please tell us why this is significant. The traditional structure of grand strategy games and MMOs lacks the intricacy and depth of social networks found in real-world communities. In games like Rise of Kingdoms, relationships are predetermined by game studios. Players don’t have the capacity to organically form and govern their own social structures. A significant reason for this has been the absence of virtual assets and a meaningful system to protect those assets. In the conventional web2 model, there are no substantial incentives to guard assets that don't exist tangibly. However, the advent of smart contracts has transformed the landscape, enabling game assets and logic to exist in an immutable, decentralized ledger. This innovation calls for the construction of a social layer over the assets layer to safeguard users' stakes on-chain. Through smart contracts, our first game, Treaty, offers a robust response to this challenge. It introduces an automated stream where participants can conveniently monitor promises and enforce agreements, a virtual analog to the legal enforcement bodies in the real world that protect people's interests and rights. This structure forms the basis for more complex and authentic virtual relationships, rivaling and potentially exceeding the social network depth of real-world communities. It will redefine the virtual society, making it possible for MMOs and grand strategy games to mirror the rich and multifaceted nature of human interaction found in the physical world. What are some of the main technical requirements for migrating real-world social relations to an on-chain gaming environment? Trust-building is the most important element. It is vital for people to believe that the on-chain world they interact with is fair and trustworthy. Only then will they be willing to stake their assets and construct meaningful relationships with strangers onchain. We are working on a novel sovereign rollup framework to make it happen, and it’s gonna be much more performant than traditional blockchains, tailored to our exact use case. Another challenge is lowering the barrier to treaty creation. It is important to recognize that people are used to making agreements verbally using natural language and expecting players to write treaties in code is not ideal in the long run. Fortunately, some great LLM tools are now available to support the translation of natural languages into code. Looking ahead, players can expect to be able to make transactions or even generate smart contracts within chats in future versions. Curio is exploring alternative execution environments for on-chain gaming with Keystone. Can you explain this move briefly? Current on-chain game architectures are unable to robustly support both the social layer and the high throughput needed to make great MMO games. is our flagship on-chain game architecture and the first architecture that addresses both needs very well. Keystone The tick-based game engine and the contract execution layer interoperate with stateful precompiles, allowing games to run lightspeed while player treaties are seamlessly integrated and enforced. This is a huge step towards the end game of blockchain games. Currently, there is no EVM framework to support games that can be played smoothly. We discovered this issue during our playtest earlier this year. Therefore, is one of our major in-house projects that aims to place the game engine in the chain. Keystone With custom precompiles, smart contracts can access the underlying ECS chain state. Instead of Solidity, game logic can be written in Go and can be massively parallelized. In short, on-chain games will now be over 100 times faster than before. How do you see the future of on-chain gaming? What are your plans for this future?
