Let’s talk about something that’s been driving me nuts for years: Google’s ongoing struggles with handling canonical URLs and duplicate content. It’s a problem that, despite being fundamental to search engine optimization (SEO), Google still can’t seem to get right. And while Google continues to flounder, guess who’s quietly acing it? Bing. Yes, you read that right – Bing! It’s honestly baffling. Here we are, in 2024, and Google, the self-proclaimed king of search, can’t even get the basics of web indexing straight. Let’s break this down. The Canonical URL Catastrophe A canonical URL is meant to tell search engines which version of a page is the “official” one when you have multiple URLs with similar or identical content. Seems simple enough, right? You’d think Google, with all its technological might and years of search engine dominance, would have perfected this by now. But nope. Google’s handling of canonical tags is, more often than not, a dumpster fire. Why? Because Google has a tendency to ignore your carefully placed canonical tags, or worse, it just gets them wrong. It might pick the wrong version of your page, or even worse – it might randomly declare some other URL as the canonical without any explanation. This leads to pages getting improperly indexed, with duplicate content spread across multiple URLs and absolutely no way for you to control it. Result? Your rankings plummet, your SEO strategy crumbles, and your site’s traffic tanks – all thanks to Google’s refusal to play by the canonical rulebook. But, oh, here’s where it gets good. Bing? Bing doesn’t have these problems. Bing can crawl your site, see your canonical tag, and follow it like a well-behaved child. It doesn’t second-guess you, doesn’t ignore your instructions, and doesn’t make arbitrary decisions that hurt your visibility. Bing understands that when a site owner points to a canonical URL, that’s what it should respect. It’s as if Bing actually listens to website owners, while Google seems to be playing SEO bingo with your site’s content. Duplicate Content Woes Then there’s duplicate content. Another area where Google’s “genius” just falls flat. We all know duplicate content is a big issue when it comes to SEO. When search engines find multiple copies of the same content, they’re supposed to figure out which one is the most relevant and display it in search results. Seems simple, right? Well, it’s not. Google has been notorious for misidentifying duplicate content, sometimes even penalizing sites with pages that have only slight variations. I’ve seen it happen time and again: you publish a well-researched article, and somehow, Google finds another page on your site and decides they’re too similar, tanking your rankings. Why does this happen? It’s because Google’s algorithm, despite being incredibly complex, still can’t reliably handle duplicate content in certain situations. There are cases where Google just can’t seem to distinguish between genuinely different pages and what’s essentially the same content presented slightly differently – even if those pages are clearly differentiated by their canonical tags or intended purpose. What comes to mind when you think of the word “boring”? A few years ago, if you’d asked marketers, they would’ve laughed and said business-to-business marketing. In 2024, things might have changed for better or worse(?). I’ll let you decide. One fine Saturday evening, a marketer on LinkedIn called out HubSpot’s social media profiles as idiotic and stirred quite a frenzy. To some, the post ‘seemed’ like a shade to Gen Z—as seems to be the case among the ‘booming’ generations—so they made sure the poster knew how “out of touch” they were. But as you’ll notice from the engagement numbers and comments, the post had supporters as well. Now, I don’t indulge in slander on social media, but the comments had me hooked for a good 10 minutes. And then fleeing off to to see what all the fuss was about. Hubspot’s page Here’s a little sneak peek for y'all. For a second there, I had to do a double take. Were the posts ? Sure. But this was quite uncharacteristic of the brand I’ve always known HubSpot to be: helpful, friendly, and sympathetic. funny These were straight-up “we’re trying to appeal to Gen Z” posts. But do you blame them? By 2025, nearly will comprise Gen Z. And from the looks of it, the strategy seems to be working spectacularly. 27% of the current workforce HubSpot recently crossed one million followers on LinkedIn, a feat few have managed in the B2B space. Their engagement numbers are also visibly soaring across social media. Or maybe, it already has. In the End—It’s Your Audience That Knows Best Ever wondered why B2B marketing is so dry? I feel the opinion is mostly held in contrast to the emotionally charged marketing common in B2C. But another, more reasonable argument is that B2B audiences generally have a disinterest (even scorn) for any “fluff” marketing. They want the information in a direct, concise manner, without the bells and whistles. Unfortunately for marketers, that often spells boring, corporate-speak. Or so they think. Coming back to HubSpot’s example—amid the naysayers and the supporters, one commenter rightly pointed out the best way to approach the criticism: In the end, business-to-business is also people-to-people marketing. And while some may appreciate (even love) a humorous, witty approach to marketing—some might not. It’s for you to find out what works and resonates with audience. your HubSpot sells a collection of horizontal products to a wide range of industries. So they can market to everyone, anyone. That’s the reason their current social media strategy seems like it’s working. If a company selling niche software were to copy the same formula, it would probably look tone-deaf and waste marketing dollars. Hey Hackers! On April 13th, Canon, the camera and photography giant, announced that they will be launching an NFT Marketplace, called , offering tokenized photographs. Cadabra Cadabra is described as a curated photography marketplace that offers NFTs from a variety of innovative creators. Canon states that the goal of the Cadabra marketplace is “to empower creators by connecting them to enthusiastic collectors who celebrate the art of photography through a shared appreciation for these digital artworks”. Decrypt has that the NFT marketplace will be launched on the Ethereum network. reported “The digital art will range from landscape, wildlife, lifestyle, sports, abstract, and other categories to spotlight the stunning work of the invited creators.” - Canon USA Canon also took to to announce the exciting news to it’s customers and followers. Twitter On Cadabra, the NFT photos will be minted by Creator drops, and there will reportedly be a secondary marketplace for NFT collectors to trade their minted NFTs. Canon has stated that Cadabra creators will have the choice of offering “purchasers prints” with their initial drops, which entitles NFT purchasers to also receive a physical print of the NFT image. Based off the small amount of information we have about Cadabra, it does sound like there will be intuitive options for creators to present their work and possibly even earn a good amount. There is no official word on when Cadbara will be launched, but Canon did allude that it will be later this year. Canon has also stated that the Cadbara marketplace will only be available in the United States at launch, but they will be expanding the project internationally in the future.
