The significant impact of technology on society, culture, and economy is undeniable. It has now become common to discuss technology together with innovation, as well as becoming a growing consideration for the government, the law, social initiatives, and families to contend with. How should we use technology for our benefit? What are the risks, and how do we manage them? How can we use technology to enhance our businesses? What safety measures do we need to take to protect our children from unwanted influence? What new possibilities in terms of careers and aspirations does technology make possible? There are some pioneering examples of technology initiatives within Africa. Wave (Fintech) has taken Africa by storm, Maraphones (Locally Manufactured Smartphone), BuXin (Electric Vehicle), Kids in Tech (robotics) and Fortizo Technologies (consumer electronics) are but a few of many other examples. Within the Gambia itself, you see people solving a whole range of social problems with technology (you can hear more about it in ). this video In this article, we will dive deeper into the possibilities that exist for young Gambia, full of innovative and energetic minds who seek better opportunities and environments to thrive, to technologically advance their nations, and to contribute their innovative solutions to the global landscape. WHAT DOES THE FUTURE LOOK LIKE? WHAT NEW REALITIES AND SOLUTIONS CAN BE CREATED THROUGH THE POWER OF TECHNOLOGY? The Gambia is in dire need of a change in the status quo. Most of the methods and processes of doing business and more are quite antiquated. Take, for instance, the banking sector; we should have passed the point where people have to queue for long hours just to withdraw money. Change should be initiated in the financial realm, as well as many other areas, and this necessary evolution is possible mainly through the transformative power of technology. Opening up new ways of doing business, creating new lifestyles, and interacting with each other: Until now, many within Africa may have felt limited by the skills, knowledge, and resources available within the country and, to some extent, lost hope or the ability to look to the sky and dream big. However, with the increasing access to technology and the access to information that comes with it, Gambians have new opportunities at their fingertips. With time, this allows us to dream bigger and imagine new realities for our prospects and lives. Opening up the imagination and sense of empowerment through technology: Technology wields the power of solving some of the most pressing problems in the Gambia, illegal migration included. We can create innovative solutions to these problems and then communicate and take action to solve them without the need to leave our homes. This is the power of technology. That isn’t to say that you should aim to rely on technology and never leave home, but when there is no other option (due to safety and accessibility issues), technology plays a key role in empowering people to make a difference. On a lighter note, boredom, suppressed ambitions, and depression can be resolved with virtual gaming experiences, or furthermore, other extended reality tools can aid youth to vividly live their dream lives and make income by gaming professionally. A means of pulling us out of our boredom and suppressed ambitions into a world of possibilities: Although one of the smallest countries in Africa, The Gambia has the potential to be a pioneering hub of digital innovation. Like Cuba is known globally for its expert doctors, Gambia can champion its skills in technology and enterprise. The country is 65% under 25, many of whom are self-starters from a young age. The economy is, in bulk, self-employed rather than in jobs, with a large percentage of the population working in agriculture. This is a fertile breeding ground for the next generation of technology innovators solving some of the most pressing global problems in agriculture, urbanization, and youth unemployment. Putting the Gambia on the global map: HOW CAN WE MAKE THESE TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCES HAPPEN IN THE GAMBIA? HOW SOON CAN IT HAPPEN? An open-source approach to skills development is perfect for developing the technology ecosystem in a place like The Gambia. There is a sincere desire to grow and learn within the country, and a willingness to share and support each other is an integral part of the culture. This creates the perfect environment for a robust open-source culture to flourish - where skills and opportunities are resources that can be exchanged and traded between people and organizations for economic growth. In recent years, young Gambians have been able to access information, resources, and support from around the globe - courses in technical skills, online mentoring from professionals in other countries, and countless examples to inspire innovation. Creating an open-source network, sharing skills, resources, and opportunities: There are a plethora of courses now available to Gambians through which they can acquire the relevant technical skills to create extraordinary innovations. The University of Applied Science Engineering and Technology features an innovation lab, one of the many great institutions in the Gambia, granting young minds the opportunity to create disruptive solutions and out-of-the-box conceptions. Technical training is a means of creating higher IQs, mental training, and sharper attention to detail. The bridge between potential and performance is training, and although there is a lot already available, there are significant gaps that need to be filled. Changing what is possible, what opportunities are available to young Gambians: The Gambia needs more research labs that delve into cutting-edge technology like robotics, AI, and other advanced technology areas if we are to majorly contribute to the rapid technological advancement happening all over the world, and expose Gambians to the possibilities of technology for the country. We can start imagining smart cities and artificially intelligent traffic systems that are integrated with self-driving cars through IoT, holographic technology, and customized learning through AI. Creating spaces and places for young, innovative minds to thrive and imagine: New realities emerge on the technological horizon at a rate that sometimes seems too fast-paced for developing nations like The Gambia to keep up with. Nonetheless, history has proven and continues to prove that this is not the case. Africans continue to amaze more developed nations with the novel ideas they invent. From the biological AI revolution by Nana Kofi Quaky in Ghana to the IoT waste management systems in Kenya, it is clear that Africa has a lot in store for the global technological community. This future, although sophisticated,  is one that preserves rather than harms or destroys the planet. The introduction of electric vehicle (EV) technology is ironclad proof that there is a big appetite for more green alternatives to technology. With EV, Fairphones, and other green technology our future is looking both safe and nourishing, so we can preserve the beauty of the Smiling Coast and help it to thrive for generations. If I had an extra dollar available to purchase cryptocurrency, I’d put it into bitcoin. - Mike Dudas (Founder and CEO - The Block) Most people know Mike Dudas as the man behind The Block, a crypto news site that focuses on analysis and research. Founded in 2018, The Block has become a popular watering hole for many crypto enthusiasts who like their original content. He is not afraid to spar or debate anyone about his beliefs on twitter including myself on occassion :). Watching him grow The Block over the last year, it is hard to not respect how quickly it has become a well known name in the crypto community. I caught up with Mike a few weeks ago to pick his brain about his thoughts on Bitcoin. I think many people will be surprised that he is just as much of a Bitcoin believer as many of the hardcore Bitcoin Maximalists he gets into it with. Mike Dudas Name: USA Country: How do people know you? I am the founder and CEO of one of the leading digital assets publications, . Our goal is to provide objective, in depth journalism, research and analysis on digital assets. We were founded in 2018 and have rapidly grown in just one year to be one of the most impactful and most cited brands in the cryptocurrency space. The Block People also know me by my Twitter presence , where I share opinions & thoughts plus engage in dialogue. @mdudas How long have you been into Bitcoin? I was introduced to Bitcoin in 2013, which is when I made my first purchase. The context is that I had recently read Chamath’s piece on . I loved his framing of it as “schmuck insurance.” At the same time, I was working at Braintree/Venmo, soon to be purchased by PayPal, and I was talking with Coinbase about whether Braintree would include bitcoin payments in our payments gateway, which was used by massive customers such as Uber and Airbnb. Investing in Bitcoin Best Bitcoin experience? Jumping into the space full time, assembling a world class research & journalism team and helping to create one of the most informative information operations in bitcoin and digital assets, generally. Worst Bitcoin experience? Getting drawn into a lose-lose public Twitter back-and-forth with a small group of Bitcoin maximalists that tarnished everyone’s reputation, including my own. It was ill-advised and petty, particularly given that I agree with that group of people on bitcoin’s importance in monetary policy and financial access for hundreds of millions in the coming decades. What made you want to launch The Block? I saw so much shilling, so much bad information and so many lies during the 2017 ICO craze. It was sad and crazy to watch people I knew buy shitcoins based on hype and the promise of overnight gains. I knew it wasn’t sustainable, and I wanted to be there to help clean up the space in what I assumed would be a massive wreck. What is the most important lesson you have learned so far? People appreciate skepticism when it is backed by data, law or other facts. People do not appreciate skepticism when it is based on emotion, agendas, bagholding or other disingenuous motives. What do you think is Bitcoin's biggest threat? Never crossing the chasm to mainstream adoption due to being “too hard to use” and general lack of mainstream interest. “Store of value” alone isn’t a use case that will attract 100M+ people. What are your thoughts on the various Bitcoin forks? They are now pointless. BCH, which included some of the early “leaders” of the bitcoin community, was the one best chance at a successful fork. That has failed -- and there is less likelihood than ever before of a successful fork as BTC continues to grow in value and security. What are you optimistic about in this space? Builders. The Lightning Network is an example, innovators in security like Casa and Ledger are examples, infrastructure providers like Fidelity Digital Assets are an example. Builders are what get me excited about future adoption. Biggest regret during the last Bear market and what did you learn? No regrets. I certainly wish I had more cash to buy more bitcoin. But I learned that my strategy of patiently holding for the long term is the right one. What is the biggest fail you observed during the last bear market? ICO teams who raised tens or hundreds of millions of dollars yet kept their treasury holdings largely in ETH as the price of the cryptocurrency plummeted, severely limiting their runway. What do you think help turn things around to the current Bull market? I can’t point to anything specific, other than that it drew down 80%+ from its highs despite a lot of infrastructure being built. I believe in the long term value of bitcoin. I can’t explain why it recovered when it did but then pulled back in Q3 of 2019. All I can say is, “I’m holding.” Who are the heroes of the last Bear market? The people who held consistent positions. The people who didn’t flip flop from shitcoiners to bitcoiners as soon as it became popular and obvious to do so. Why do you think alt-coins are still struggling? Because they haven’t delivered much meaningful value anywhere close to the amount of money they have raised or the market caps they are being granted. The value vs money raised relationship looks even worse when compared to traditional, highly efficient early stage tech companies that raise money based on usage and product milestones. What do you have to say to those who claim alt-season is coming? Name the coins you’re optimistic about. There won’t be a widespread, long-duration “alt-season”; any recovery will be confined to a handful of high quality projects, at most. Do you hold any alts? If not, why? No. If I had an extra dollar available to purchase cryptocurrency, I’d put it into bitcoin. What do you think about the upcoming Bitcoin halving and what it will do to the price of Bitcoin? History tells us the price will increase (at least based on previous halvings.) I don’t really understand why this wouldn’t already be priced in, but I’d sure love to see the price of BTC spike! What do you think makes Bitcoin superior to anything else out there? The pure genesis of bitcoin, its well-defined and set monetary policy, its conservative approach to core code changes, 10 years of consistent block production, high number of distributed nodes, great brand recognition. Do you think central banks are or will be accumulating Bitcoin? I could see central banks that are cut off from the global financial system accumulating in the near term (eg, Iran or Venezuela), but I don’t expect that the strongest central banks (eg, US or China) will be accumulating any significant position in the 2020s. How do you feel about the current state and future of lightning network? It’s extremely early. Channel capacity and usage are low, and it is unclear whether it will ever be widely used. But I’m delighted that so many talented people are working to improve bitcoin’s usefulness as a payment network. What are your thoughts on HODLing Bitcoin? HODLers are the smartest Bitcoiners. I sold my 401K and incurred a penalty so that I could HODL my bitcoin. What are your thoughts on Bitcoin Maximalism? The term has lost any meaning (assuming it ever had one.) There are many types of extremely passionate Bitcoiners. I don’t agree with all of them on every point they make or their reasons for believing deeply in bitcoin or their expectations of future use cases and adoption -- but I do agree that bitcoin is a transcendental form of money -- censorship resistant, global, set monetary policy, highly secure. Thoughts on the notion of bitcoinization? Let’s crawl before we walk before we run. I’m skeptical of any global bitcoinization. Where do you think Bitcoin dominance will do as the price increases? Increase. It is clearly the most valuable cryptocurrency by a wide margin. What will someone have to do to prove they are the real Satoshi Nakamoto? It’s not possible, as I believe that Satoshi (or one of the people who comprises the group that is Satoshi) has passed away. And this group has no interest in “proving” they are “the real Satoshi Nakamoto.” What Bitcoin startups are you excited about? Lightning Labs, Casa, OpenNode, BTCPay, Wasabi Walllet, Coldcard, OpenDime, LocalBitcoins, Lolli, Fold What “crypto influencers” do you think get it wrong and why? There are a few who get it terribly wrong, but I’d rather not call out specific people. We did so by proposing the first instance of STILT that applies unimodal intermediate tasks to a multimodal target task. Specifically, we tested image-only and text-only sentiment classification as intermediate tasks in training a meme sentiment classifier. We showed that this approach worked – unimodal text improved meme classification performance to a statistically significant degree. This novel approach allowed us to train a meme classifier that outperforms meme-only finetuning with only 60% as many labelled meme samples. As possible explanations for our observations, we discuss apparent similarities and differences in the roles of image and text modalities between unimodal and multimodal sentiment analysis tasks. Innovative Strategies in Meme Sentiment Analysis: The Impact of Unimodal Training

A term everyone has probably heard about is apparently widely misunderstood. Take Uber, for instance. Many believed it to be a perfect example of disruption when, in reality, Uber’s concept doesn’t really align with the core principles of the theory. As confusing as it may sound, not every business that somehow transforms the market can qualify as a disruption. . Disruptive innovation Before we get to the main idea of how disruptive innovation transformed the art market in particular, let’s start with the basics by figuring out the true meaning of the term in question. History of Disruptive Innovation is a term coined by Clayton Christensen, an American academic and business theorist, to describe a process by which a new product or service takes root initially in a low-end or new market and then gradually moves upmarket, eventually displacing established competitors. Disruptive innovation The concept of disruptive innovation has been widely applied to various industries, including technology, art, healthcare, education, manufacturing, etc. It has become an important framework for understanding how new technologies and business models can disrupt established industries and create new market opportunities. Disruptive Innovation in Tech Several businesses have been mislabeled as disruptive innovations, often due to their rapid growth or innovative products. One of such businesses is Uber. The definition we added above contains one of the reasons why Uber is not a disruptive innovation. As we mentioned, in order to be considered disruptive, new products or services should originate from a low-end or new market. Uber doesn’t originate from either. Uber was founded in 2009 in San Francisco. At that time, people were already used to calling cabs. Therefore, the market wasn’t new. On the other hand, it wasn’t a low-end opportunity since the cab service has not yet been as advanced. Another reason is Uber’s targeting a mainstream audience from the very beginning. One of the core principles of the theory is that disruptive innovations initially appeal to niche markets and only gain widespread adoption once they reach mainstream quality standards. So, was Uber a major breakthrough? Definitely. But is it really a disruptive innovation? Not really. Here are the core principles of the disruptive innovation theory: ocus on underserved segments; F implicity and affordability; S ncremental improvement; I oherent value network. C All the information above naturally raises a question: What can actually be considered disruptive innovation, and why does compliance with the theory actually matter? Today, Amazon's online shopping platform is well-known for a wide variety of products, from groceries to gadgets, all effortlessly accessible from one's doorstep. Another example of disruptive innovation is Netflix. This company hasn’t always been the way we know it. Netflix originally started as an online DVD and VHS rental with mail delivery. The company captured an opportunity to utilize the Internet and thus disrupted traditional DVD rentals, such as Blockbuster. As Netflix was expanding its service, having added streaming capabilities in 2007, the company gradually solidified its disruptive position. When the new service improved, and its content library grew, the company attracted more mainstream customers, leaving companies like Blockbuster behind. Disruptive Innovation in Art Perhaps the most revolutionizing disruptive innovations from the art world are and (Real World Assets). Many of you probably know that one of the most crucial steps in running a successful startup company is to define the right minimum viable product, simply known as MVP. Developing an MVP even after conducting initial market tests can be challenging, as the version of your product is essentially an unvalidated hypothesis. It's common for developers to waste time and resources on MVPs that are not well-defined. This guide will help you identify the core features of your product, enabling you to avoid wasting time and money. To define your MVP, you must envision the first instance of your product and find a working method on how to showcase its best possible features in a simple and brief way. Let’s take a look at the 7-step guide on how you can turn your product idea into a successful startup and appeal to early adopters. How to Find Your MVP MVP is not a beta version of your product designed to determine bugs. It is also not an idea written down on a piece of paper or presented in a couple of slides. Your MVP is intended to test market demand assumptions, refine the product vision, and help you choose where to focus future development efforts. MVPs are therefore a very effective strategy for determining your product-market fit. So, what should be your first few moves when turning your idea into a viable product? 1. Understand Your Users During this stage, you need to analyze the current state of the market, identify your target audience, and study your competitors. This will help you understand how your product can stand out among others and what features are important to your product users. Here, your product team must ensure they clearly know who their users are. Identify each class (or type) of the user, their needs, wants, pain points, expectations, experience, and other metrics you find useful in your case. The final step of your research should be to draft the so-called success criteria – the standard to judge whether an objective has been achieved – for each type of product user. Once you have identified your users, it’s time to learn if you can actually understand them. Collect information about their behavior, their profiles, and habits – of course, by complying with the data collection laws in your country. Get as much knowledge and publicly accessible insights into who your users are. You can also carry out a few interviews, and create surveys or focus groups to further deepen your research. 3. What Is Your Big Picture Product? What would your product look like if you had all the possible resources, time, and investment? What is the ideal state of your product? It is recommended that you list down all the valid ideas collected from your team that could help your startup reach its final stage of development. Moreover, you can also collect feedback from your users. To help you think big, you can answer the following questions: What major issue are you aiming to address? Now that you have got an idea regarding your ideal product, your next step is to define what would be enough for your product to work with the least amount of resources, time, and investment.
