Java has been a developer staple for quite some time. In fact, Java is one of the most popular programming languages on the market. Part of the reason for that is Android. When Java was first created, it was done so with the network in mind. Java also had the backing of major players in the industry (such as Sun Microsystems and IBM). But Java has stood the test of time, and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. Take a look at the example above (in Figure 1). You'll see that: The Java 11 path is: /usr/lib/jvm/java-11-openjdk-amd64/bin/java The Java 8 path is: /usr/lib/jvm/java-8-openjdk-amd64/jre/bin/java Copy the path for the Java version you want to use and then issue the command: sudo nano /etc/environment At the bottom of the file, add the environment like so: JAVA_HOME="PATH" Where PATH is the path of the version you want to use for the JAVA_HOME environment variable. In our example, for Java 11 that line would be: JAVA_HOME= "/usr/lib/jvm/java-11-openjdk-amd64/bin/java" For Java 8 , that line would be: JAVA_HOME= "/usr/lib/jvm/java-8-openjdk-amd64/jre/bin/java" Once you've made the changes, save and close the file. Change into your Downloads directory with the command: cd ~/Downloads Now you can download the file with the command: curl -O https://storage.googleapis.com/golang/go1.13.5.linux-amd64.tar.gz With that file downloaded, unpack it with the command: tar -xvf go*.tar.gz Next, move the newly-created Go folder with the command: sudo mv go /usr/local The next step is to add the go folder to your user's . For those that don't know what a user's is, it's any directory that is considered global. A global directory means any executable file within that directory can be run from anywhere in the file system. $PATH $PATH To see the current directories in your , issue the command: $PATH echo $PATH You will see that the newly moved Go directory isn’t included. To add that directory to your $PATH, issue the command: nano ~/.profile Scroll to the bottom of that file and add the following lines: GOPATH=$HOME/work PATH=$PATH: local/go/bin:$GOPATH/bin export export /usr/ Save and close that file. What you need to install phpMyAdmin In order to make this work, you’ll need to have an instance of Ubuntu Server 18.04 up and running. You’ll also need to have a user with sudo privileges. Other than that, you’re ready to go. Installing the LAMP stack On the off-chance you don’t already have the database server installed, let’s take care of that. In fact, we’re going to install the entire LAMP (Linux Apache MySQL PHP) stack. Log into your server and issue the command: sudo apt-get install lamp-server^ -y Once that command completes, make sure to secure the MySQL server with the command: sudo mysql_secure_installation Answer the questions, making sure to set a strong, unique password for the MySQL admin user. When you finish securing the MySQL database server, you’re ready to install phpMyAdmin. Installing phpMyAdmin Now that phpMyAdmin is included in the standard repositories, it’s considerably easier to install than it once was. Back at the terminal window, issue the command: sudo apt-get install phpmyadmin php-mbstring php-gettext -y During the installation, you must select the web server to be used (Figure 1). Since we just installed a LAMP stack, make sure to highlight apache2 by using your keyboard arrow keys, and then tapping the spacebar to select the option. The next interactive section of the installation is to okay the database configuration for phpMyAdmin with dbconfig-common. Creating a phpmyadmin user The newest iterations of phpMyAdmin don’t want you to log into the system with the root user. To get around that, we need to grant permissions to the phpmyadmin user that is created during the installation. To take care of the permissions, go back to the terminal window and log into the MySQL console with the command: sudo mysql -u root -p At the MySQL prompt, run the following: GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON *.* TO 'phpmyadmin'@'localhost'; Flush the privileges with the command: FLUSH PRIVILEGES; Finally, exit out of the MySQL prompt with the command: exit Logging into phpMyAdmin With the installation complete, it’s now time to log into your phpMyAdmin system. Open a web browser and point it to (Where SERVER_IP is the IP address of the phpMyAdmin hosting server). At the login prompt type phpmyadmin for the user and then enter the phpmyadmin user password you created during the phpMyAdmin installation. http://SERVER_IP/phpmyadmin Upon successful authentication, you will find yourself at the phpMyAdmin main window (Figure 4). Installing phpMyAdmin for Easy MySQL Administration [A How-To Guide]

If you’ve adopted Linux, chances are you might have done so for development purposes. After all, it has everything you need to program in most languages, and do so for (almost) free. With Linux you can program in some of the most important languages on the planet, such as C++. In fact, with most distributions, there’s very little you have to do to start working on your first program. And what’s better, you can easily write and compile all from the command line. If you’re a lone programmer or you work for a custom software development company like , it should take you no time to get up to speed on programming with Linux as your platform of choice. BairesDev With that said, I want to guide you through the process of writing and compiling your first C++ program on Linux. I’ll demonstrate how this is done on both Ubuntu and Red Hat distributions. What you’ll need The only things you’ll need for this tutorial are: A running instance of a Ubuntu- or Red Hat-based Linux distribution. Some C++ code. And that’s it. I’ll be demonstrating with the tried and true “Hello, World!”. This is an incredibly basic example, but it makes it easy for new users to follow. If you’re unfamiliar with it, all it does is print out the phrase “Hello, World!” on the screen. Installing the necessary tools Although there are some Linux distributions that come with everything you need to start developing (out of the box), you may come across one that doesn’t. Without the right tools, your bespoke software development experience will get frustrating fast. So, how do you install the necessary software? Let’s do this on Ubuntu first. Open a terminal window on your desktop and issue the command: sudo apt-get install build-essential -y In order to do this on Red Hat, you’ll use the dnf command with the groups options like so: sudo dnf group install “Development Tools” Either command will install everything you need to compile your first C++ application. Writing the program Now we need to write the “Hello, World!” program. Because this is a simple application, you can use the Nano editor. Open a terminal window and issue the command: nano hello.cpp That command will create a new file, named hello.cpp, and open it for editing. } "Hello, World!" return 0 Save and close the file with the keyboard shortcut [Ctrl]+[X] and then type “y” (no quotes) to use the name we gave the file from the start. At this point you now have your C++ file, hello.cpp, ready to compile. Compiling the program The next step is to compile our newly-written program. The command to do this is really quite simple. The basic command is: g++ hello.cpp That command will compile the program and create an executable file named a.out. Not very helpful, right? So instead of letting g++ name the executable, let’s give it the name hello, by using the output option (-o) with the command: g++ -o hello hello.cpp The above command will compile the hello.cpp file and create a new executable binary, named hello. Running the new program Now that you’ve used g++ to compile your program, it’s time to run it. Because this is a terminal-only application, you have to run it from within the terminal as a command. To do this, issue the command: ./hello When you run the above command, you should see the output of the Hello, World! program (Figure 1). (Figure 1) The Hello, World! program output. The reason why you have to run the program with the leading ./ characters, is because the program isn’t in your $PATH, which is a collection of directories wherein a command can be run globally. Because of this, you have to run the command from within the directory housing the hello binary. Let’s say, however, you want to be able to run that Hello, World! application from within any directory on your Linux machine. If you want to do that, you must copy the binary file into a directory within your $PATH. To find out what directories are in your $PATH, issue the command: echo $PATH This will list out every directory in your $PATH (Figure 2). Figure 2 All of the directories in a user $PATH. A safe bet is always /usr/local/bin. Copy that binary file with the command: sudo cp hello /usr/local/bin Now, all you have to do is issue the command hello to see the output of the Hello, World! program. From this very basic example, you can start programming and compiling more and more complex applications, until coding on Linux is second nature.
