To determine where is this location, you'd first have to re-run the update-alternatives command like so: sudo update-alternatives --config java The output of that command not only allows you to select the version of Java you want to use, but it also includes the path for that version. Take a look at the example above (in Figure 1). You'll see that: The Java 11 path is: /usr/lib/jvm/java-11-openjdk-amd64/bin/java The Java 8 path is: /usr/lib/jvm/java-8-openjdk-amd64/jre/bin/java Copy the path for the Java version you want to use and then issue the command: sudo nano /etc/environment At the bottom of the file, add the environment like so: JAVA_HOME="PATH" Where PATH is the path of the version you want to use for the JAVA_HOME environment variable. In our example, for Java 11 that line would be: JAVA_HOME= "/usr/lib/jvm/java-11-openjdk-amd64/bin/java" For Java 8 , that line would be: JAVA_HOME= "/usr/lib/jvm/java-8-openjdk-amd64/jre/bin/java" Once you've made the changes, save and close the file. Reload the environment file with the command: source /etc/environment Finally, verify the path has changed with the command: echo $JAVA_HOME The output of the command should match the path of the Java version you chose to use. A global directory means any executable file within that directory can be run from anywhere in the file system. $PATH $PATH To see the current directories in your , issue the command: $PATH echo $PATH You will see that the newly moved Go directory isn’t included.
