HackerNoon Reporter: Please tell us briefly about your background. I’ve had first-hand insight into how broken the global food supply chain is having left school and trained as a chef. After that, I spent close to a decade in the food and beverage industry - working in the Uk, Australia, Spain, and on cruise ships. What's your startup called? And in a sentence or two, what does it do? AGR1 (Agricultural Growing Revolutionised, farm to plate in 1 day) is a state of the art hydroponic farming company, that specialises in low land, natural light hydroponics, growing produce that’s Nakd of chemicals/pesticides then delivering to kitchens within hours of harvest, in reusable containers that are the same size as that which kitchens are already using making our brand ‘Nakd Produce’ the most sustainable and freshest there is in the market. What is the origin story? After years of being in F&B, a short time in finance in Moscow then Hong Kong, my son Henry Xander Harrison was born in 2014. That night when holding him, I realised I had to change who I was, my priorities, and what I did. A month later I was shown hydroponics, after a couple of years working for companies that claimed to be about making a better world, I realised that there aren’t any who I believe are doing it right. What do you love about your team, and why are you the ones to solve this problem? the diversity of experience, knowledge, and the commitment to making AGR1 and Nakd a success. If you weren’t building your startup, what would you be doing? Why talk about hypotheticals? At the moment, how do you measure success? What are your core metrics? Growing the best produce, having happy customers. What’s most exciting about your traction to date? We’re the first people to do hydroponics in Johor. Our produce is served daily to the royal family. Our customers love our produce and boxing system. What technologies are you currently most excited about, and most worried about? And why? Most excited about the development of the hydroponic and start ag industry. Most worried would have to be drone dogs…. Because Drone dogs!! Along with robot-controlled farms(we need jobs for people! Not robots. What drew you to get published on HackerNoon? What do you like most about our platform? We need to get attention for what we’re doing. You guys have a cool setup. What advice would you give to the 21-year-old version of yourself? I wouldn’t, I’ve lived, made mistakes, now I have a son and a mission. What is something surprising you've learned this year that your contemporaries would benefit from knowing? In every dunghill there is always going on a slow combustion, or fermentation, giving forth ammonia in vaporous form; and this ammonia escapes into the air as a total loss, whereas it ought to be retained as far as possible in the manure, since the compounds of ammonia constitute the source whence plants obtain nitrogen. Therefore to prevent this waste, plaster is sprinkled over the dunghill. Sometimes, too, it is sprinkled over each layer of manure as the pile rises. The plaster absorbs the ammoniac vapors, gives them a little of its sulphuric acid, and converts them into a compound, sulphate of ammonia, which is proof against vaporization. LIME IN AGRICULTURE “To be fertile a soil must contain limestone, sand, and clay, besides the organic substances coming from humus and fertilizers. Now it may be that nature has not endowed the soil with a sufficient quantity or with any of these three constituents. Then the character of the soil must be corrected by giving it what it lacks. That is what is called improving the land. Thus a soil that is too sandy is improved by the addition of limestone and clay; one that is too compact, too clayey, is improved by adding sand and, still more, by adding limestone. Mineral substances thus added to the soil to correct it are called correctives. These substances coöperate also in the nutrition of plants, and from this point of view may be regarded as mineral fertilizers. “One of the most valuable of correctives is lime, which is indispensable to soils lacking limestone, indispensable also to the nutrition of nearly all our cultivated vegetables. It acts in various ways. First, it energetically attacks vegetable substances, decomposing them and converting them into humus. A pile of leaves that would take long months to rot becomes in a short time a mass of humus when mixed with lime. Hence its great utility in fields overgrown [ ]with weeds, and in newly cleared land—in short, wherever there are old stumps, piles of leaves, remnants of wood, and patches of heather, which need to be decomposed. With the help of lime all these herbaceous or woody substances are quickly converted into humus, with which the soil becomes enriched to the great advantage of future crops. 53 “In the second place, lime corrects or neutralizes the acidity peculiar to certain soils, as is proved by the following experiment. Let us mix some vinegar, no matter how strong, with a little lime. In a short time the smell and acid taste of the vinegar will have disappeared. Now wherever masses of vegetable refuse, such as leaves, mosses, rushes, old stumps, are undergoing decay, there are produced certain sour-tasting substances or, in other words, acids, which are invariably harmful to agriculture. This generation of acid occurs notably in turfy soils, which have an excessive acidity favorable to the growth of coarse rushes and sedges that are valueless to us, and at the same time this acid is highly injurious to all our cultivated plants. Lime, therefore, which is sure to correct this acidity, works wonders in marshy lands, damp meadows, and turfy soils. We are warned of the need of lime by the appearance of ferns, heather, sedge or reed-grass, rushes, mosses and sphagnei. “Thirdly, when once mixed with the soil, lime speedily resumes the form it wore before passing through the lime-kiln; that is to say, it becomes limestone, but in the shape of fine powder. This return [ ]to the limestone condition is brought about by union with the carbonic acid gas coming from the atmosphere or thrown off by the substances decaying in the ground. Under this new form lime continues to play a useful part by supplying the calcareous ingredient to soil that lacked it, and also by preventing the clay from becoming too cohesive, too impervious to air and water. 54 “The addition of lime to the soil should take place at the end of summer, when the ground is dry. Little heaps of quicklime, each containing about twenty kilograms, are placed at intervals of five meters and covered with a few spadefuls of earth. In a short time the moisture in the atmosphere reduces the lime to a fine powder, which is then spread evenly with a shovel and covered with earth—an operation involving no severe labor. “Lime should never be applied with seed. Mere contact with it would burn the young shoots. Neither should it be mixed with manure before it is used, since the immediate result would be a total loss of great quantities of ammonia, thrown off in gaseous form; and ammonia, as I have explained, is one of the richest of fertilizers. Lime and manure, therefore, should be used separately. “Soils rich in turf, clay, or granite are the ones on which lime acts most beneficially. Because of the important results attained by the use of lime, its manufacture for purely agricultural purposes by certain expeditious and effective methods is customary in many places. Thus in Mayenne, where this application [ ]of lime has converted tracts of uncultivated clayey land into rich pastures or into wheat fields of exceptional fertility, lime is made in enormous kilns a dozen meters high and supported by the cliff that furnishes the limestone and sometimes the fuel also. 55 “All animal matter makes excellent fertilizer. Of this class are old woolen rags, stray bits of leather, fragments of horn, dried blood from slaughter-houses, and flesh not fit for human consumption. All these substances are rich in nitrogen and phosphates, and if mixed with farm manure they add greatly to its value. Lime furnishes us the means of utilizing one of these substances, flesh, in the best way possible. “Dead bodies of animals, heedlessly left for dogs and crows and magpies to devour, should be cut up in pieces and then buried with a mixture of earth and quicklime. This attacks the flesh and quickly decomposes it, so that in a few months’ time there would be available a deposit of the most powerful fertilizer instead of a useless, disease-breeding carcass. As to the bones, resistant to the action of lime, they are burned to render them more friable, and then reduced to powder. This bone-dust, mixed with the fertilizer furnished by the decayed flesh, will contribute to grain-field or pasture a rich supply of phosphorus. AgriFi In the North Eastern part of Nigeria, Bolaji’s home country, thousands of smallholder farmers still use camels to get their farm produce to the market and the lack of access to credit facilities continues to hinder productivity. Across the Global South, there are millions of smallholder farmers who face such difficulties. Governments across the Global South, the UN, and NGOs have formulated policies to tackle these lingering problems but have failed to effectively address them. True to my conviction that enormous disruptive potential can change the status quo, I recently sat down with Bolaji to explore AgriFi and Tórónet, its underlying protocol. blockchain's Mr Bolaji, how did your journey to blockchain begin? Being a blockchain entrepreneur was the natural next step in my fintech journey. The first phase of fintech on the continent pertains to using technology to expand access and opportunities for people. This is where my journey started when I co-founded Cellulant back in 2004. The second phase pertains to embedding fintech to be part of business workflows, with a focus on enterprise customers. This is what we see today as most thriving, large-scale businesses rely on some form of fintech. The third phase of fintech is about communities, connections, and disintermediation. This is the phase we are pioneering, and only blockchains enable communities to bridge the divide between the physical world and the digital world in the most efficient way. What exactly is Tórónet? Tórónet, Africa's first Layer-1 blockchain protocol, was specifically designed to power the tokenized economies of the future. Web 3.0, powered by blockchain infrastructure, can change this. We looked at the current formulation of Web 3.0 infrastructure, and we decided that the Global South needed to build on the learnings from the Global North and create this addition to the global Web 3.0 infrastructure; that is what we call Tórónet. What were the early challenges you faced in building Tórónet? The project to launch an alternative layer-1 that is useful for everyday use cases in Africa came to us in 2017. One of the big challenges we have faced was explaining to people why we chose to build an alternative layer-1 and why it had to be different from existing ones. Some of our choices and criticisms of existing solutions were unconventional at the time. Remember, these were the days when projects raised gigantic amounts of capital based on nothing but promises about the future in a text document. We’ve advocated for solid tokenomics based on value creation instead of printing tokens out of thin air; we said from the start that without being connected to value creation in the real world, it would be hard to have a sustainable network. We’ve advocated for a Proof-of-Stake consensus mechanism, a native token that is a stablecoin in order to provide stability, and a stakeholder model where users and value creators co-own the network instead of venture capitalists. Our focus has always been: how do we make this great technology readily available so that it can benefit people beyond speculative trading? It has been interesting to see that years later, a lot of the space has been moving toward our initial claims. Let's talk about AgriFi and how the Tórónet protocol is designed to serve it. What's AgriFi? Smallholder farmers often lack knowledge of available funding, market linkages, and how to access various forms of capital. AgriFi is addressing this issue by unlocking capital flows and opportunities in agriculture, leveraging blockchain technology to make millions of nano-farms investable. Unlike other sectors, agriculture provides investors with annual exits, making it an attractive investment option. Agriculture is a $125 billion sector in Nigeria, accounting for 25% of GDP. In comparison, financial services represent a $10 billion segment (2.5% of GDP), and oil and gas, including other extractive industries, account for $50 billion (10% of GDP). However, agriculture attracts less than 1% of capital inflows into Nigeria. AgriFi connects farmers to suitable capital providers and markets, enabling them to achieve the best value for their crops. What are the main challenges in AgriFi? The main challenge is identity management and trust. Smallholder farmers typically have problems with getting businesses to trust them. We solve this by bringing together a network of partners that serve as real-world validators to bring these farmers on-chain. We’ve got USAID extension service partners on the ground, local banks, food aggregators, crop insurers, input suppliers and tech experts all working together around AgriFi. How is blockchain technology capable of addressing them? We are using the concept of soul-bound tokens to create, for every farmer on Agrifi, a digital business profile. This is an NFT token that is unique to the farmer and serves as his global identity and business profile. The underlying data is created by validators who are extension partners that are based in the community. This construct makes the invisible farmer visible to everyone that needs to interact with the farmer. Tórónet as a layer 1 blockchain protocol is feasible in a growth market like Africa. How do you explain its potential for growth in your country? The potential is huge; this, in my view, is a trillion-dollar impact technology that will unleash economic opportunity that hitherto could not be unleashed. What, in your view, is the biggest challenge facing the implementation of blockchain technology? The bad stuff that has happened with the cryptocurrency use case is giving blockchain as a technology a bad reputation. We need to do a lot of user education so that people can realize that there are millions of other use cases. Many people think crypto is blockchain, but it’s just the first blockchain use case. Any parting words? At Tórónet, we believe the future will be tokenized, and that this is a natural evolution of the Internet. We also believe that African economies can use this technology to leapfrog their path of development to gain prosperity in the age of digitalization. Yesterday, the Federal Government of Nigeria approved the national blockchain policy. We make a call to the FGN to set itself up on Tórónet so that its vision of sovereignty can be achieved. Ok, not really, but we will dissect one of the most important technical aspects upon which the entire industry is built: Consensus Mechanisms This is a very dense topic that requires an understanding of many different technical elements; I will try to break them all down as we go through it & provide links/resources for those that want to dive in deeper. Cryptocurrency operates through a cloud computing system called a DLT (Distributed Ledger Technology), such as a Blockchain or DAG (Directed Acyclic Graph). This technology has been developed as a solution to a computational “paradigm” known as which explains the difficulty of establishing secure communication in decentralized environments. The Byzantine Generals Problem Basically, if 3 generals surround a city & want to capture it, they must attack all at once. Any less than all 3 & the plan will fail. Trust is the assurance that future outcomes are dependable. It is the ability to put faith into something/someone without the fear, uncertainty, or doubt of that something/someone fucking you over. Consensus mechanisms are the vehicles for establishing the truth, avoiding non-truth, & in turn garnering user trust in cryptocurrencies. What is a consensus mechanism? As it relates to crypto, consensus mechanisms provide the dual functionality of security guarantees & reward regulation. They are systems/protocols that are used to agree on a single version of history for all the chain’s activity. A code of conduct for establishing a common agreement on the shared, single, true state. They dictate:- who verifies & confirms the transactions that are submitted into a blockchain block(s).- how that verification & confirmation happens- who & how is somebody rewarded for their efforts/contributions This is where things get a little tricky: Consensus mechanisms do not have to only have to deal with the cold hard computational logic of blockchain security. They can be used to express the coming to an agreement of trust on virtually any arbitrary social, technical or mechanical element. The nuances of the delicate architecture behind consensus mechanisms are extremely complex… but at the highest level they can be boiled down to four core composing design elements: Computational complexity The amount of resources & steps that are necessary in order to arrive at the desired outcome (the quicker/shorter, the better) Fault-tolerance At the core of any computational network’s consensus is the ability to maintain operations in the event that network participants drop out or stop working (which can happen sporadically) The higher the fault tolerance, the easier it is to game the system; the lower the tolerance the more resilient the system it. So if the fault tolerance of a system is 51% that means that the system can continue to operate as long as 49% is compromised. If the tolerance is 67%, that means the system can handle only 33% of compromised nodes. Resilience The ability to continue delivering proper results in the event of malicious activity (which can happen for prolonged periods of time) Liveliness The guarantees that even after some unforeseen event happens, the network will continue to operate truthfully Tradeoffs in Mechanisms: There is no single universal mechanism to rule them all. Consensus mechanisms are radically different according to their application. The blockchain trilemma poses that it is impossible to have the presence of all 3 properties: Security, Scalability, & Decentralization in a single system. There can only be some degree of a mixture between 2-of-3 elements. Based on which combination is present in a blockchain, each mechanism will differ according to: - performance - consistency, - scalability, - efficiency While there are hundreds, if not thousands of different mechanisms out in the marketplace today; there are two general types of Consensus mechanisms based on their operational logic, . Every other variation will just be some modular adjustment or combination of these two. proof-of-work & proof-of-stake Now that we have a general understanding of Consensus mechanisms; let’s review some of them: Disclaimer - Not every “Proof-Of-something” serves the same functions as the others. - Not every consensus mechanism needs to have “Proof-Of” in its name. - Byzantine Fault Tolerance is an element of any/every mechanism. POW — Proof Of Work Very High Decentralization: 51% Fault Tolerance: Securing blockchain history Use case: Resource-intensive process of extreme mathematical complexity that demands dedicated hardware. POW consensus is reached via the contribution of computational resources to solving mathematical problems of monstrous complexity. Here, nodes are called miners and earn their rewards through the emission of new network tokens. Leaders for block proposals are chosen on a first-come, first-serve basis according to whoever is able to solve the mathematical problem. Description: POW itself has a built-in sub-rule of “chain weight” or “chain height” & truncation. Whenever POW is running, miners are building their own versions of the next block; however, only one block will be accepted. Meaning that the network will truncate/discard all non-accepted blocks & always recalibrate to the version of the chain that is longest/heaviest (in terms of the amount of work done on it). This is considered the most secure/decentralized model of consensus because of its ability to resist global government scrutiny. , , , POW Examples - Bitcoin (BTC) Dogecoin (DOGE) Litecoin (LTC) Kaspa (KAS) POS — Proof Of Stake moderate-high Decentralization: 67% Fault Tolerance: Securing blockchain history Use case: The most popular model for consensus. The concept behind this one is straightforward, users lockup/collateralize their tokens in order to participate. In POS models there are fixed circulating supplies meaning that no new tokens are issued as block rewards, the rewards are earned through the accrual of transaction fees. Additionally, unlike POW, POS models employ stake-slashing for any misbehavior; in the event that malicious/subversive behavior is found, that violating node will have ~50% of its stake forfeited to the network for redistribution amongst the fair nodes. Commonly considered to be less secure & more centralized than POW in the sense that incentives of network nodes are similar to legacy financial systems; deeper-pocketed players have a better chance to own the network nodes. Only the largest can partake in the securing process while smaller-sized token holders “delegate” their tokens to the operating nodes; basically, they vote with their tokens, never giving them to the actual node. dPOS consensus models will typically have in the range of 21–101 nodes that are handling network operations. These network operators are selected based on the amount of tokens they have at stake. The largest benefit of the dPOS variant is that by constraining the amount of nodes; while this leads to centralization, it does also bring the added benefit of faster processing times. Very similar to the delegated proof of stake model, Leased Proof-of-Stake provides the technical difference in; that in dPOS the network nodes accrue the rewards & then distribute them to their delegators; but in LPOS users are actually lending their tokens to the nodes, thereby they own a portion of that nodes weight & accrue the rewards directly, rather than through the delegate. The tradeoff here is that to run the physical node, a very high level of technical knowledge & equipment is needed. So far this implementation has only been utilized in one project. Description: LPOS Examples — Waves (WAVES) HPOS — Hybrid Proof Of Stake (also called Proof of Activity) Moderate Decentralization: 51% Fault Tolerance: Securing blockchain history Use case: As the name might have hinted out, HPOS is a creative architecture that leverages both base consensus models (POW + POS). In this model, there are two tiers of processes that take place. On the base level, miners (just as in POW) verify & package transactions into blocks. Then these pre-vetted blocks are submitted into the mempool of the second tier, where POS nodes run an extra round of checks on the blocks & validate them. Novel in design when compared to other variations because it is arguably more decentralized (not). This variant does not have a punishment mechanism; so technically bad actors can act badly & not suffer. However, this design is extremely low in its barrier to entry, only 1 single token is required to join as a node. In theory, this is easy to game because a single actor can make a silent-Sybil attack by distributing 1,000 tokens over 1,000 different wallets. Description: PPOS Examples — Algorand (ALGO) POI — Proof Of Importance Low-Moderate Decentralization: 67% Fault Tolerance: Securing blockchain history Use case: Reputation-based model that is yet another implementation of POS. Difficult to become accepted as a valid node, easy to get kicked out. I must admit, this one is a little more creative in its approach. Proof of importance utilizes two factors outside of just the stake; these include: Description: 1. the staking nodes’ network activity *(rather than just staking passively, they must contribute to the velocity of the token on the network) 2. the quality of the nodes’ activity (spam transactions will not help) POI Examples — NEM (XEM) POA — Proof Of Authority None - very low' Decentralization: 51% Fault Tolerance: Securing blockchain history Use case: Centralization is the name of the game here. POA utilizes a valuable non-financial primitive to operate, identity. By using identity, all of the operating network participants risk their reputations in order to be part of the consensus circle. Anywhere there is identity there is centralization. However, by having small constrained amounts of known operators, networks that use POA have extremely high throughput potential. This is definitely a mechanism that you want underpinning any public goods blockchains, but that hasn’t stopped projects from leveraging it. Description: not POA Examples — VeChain (VET) pBFT — Practical Byzantine Fault Tolerance Low Decentralization: 67% Fault Tolerance: Developing robustness of a mechanism Use case: A key compositional component for building other consensus mechanisms. Typically found in permissioned networks, pBFT works by leveraging the replication of data throughout nodes. Not the most efficient of models due to inherent communication restraints, but very resilient (obviously tolerance is high in centralized systems, the players only have themselves & their friends to blame). Description: pBFT Examples — Zilliqa (ZIL) {uses a mixture of POW + pBFT} dBFT — Delegated Byzantine Fault Tolerance Low Decentralization: 51% Fault Tolerance: Developing robustness of a mechanism Use case: As is the case with its cousin above (pBFT) delegated Byzantine fault tolerance is a compositional element for the creation of more robust blockchain systems. On its own, the mechanism can be used to support distributed communications, however, they are limited by communication constraints that make dBFT systems centralized by default. Description: dBFT Examples — NEO (NEO) POC — Proof Of Capacity/Commitment Low Decentralization: 51% Fault Tolerance: Securing blockchain history Use case: Unique twist on the POW consensus mechanisms; rather than utilizing processing units to constantly solve problems; proof-of-Capacity leverages disk space/memory. POC plots potential solutions to future problems & stores them in the empty disk space of miners. Not to be confused with a total lack of mining, because mining still takes place; it just happens pre-emptively (which then might bring up potential security risks). Not very effective at large scale due to high sensitivity in the event of a node dropping out, which requires a re-plotting of the whole network & becomes less efficient as more mining nodes join (they require additional plotting which then creates huge backlogs on the computers allocating disk space). Description: , , POC Examples — Storj (STORJ) Chia (XCH) Signum (SIGNA) POH — Proof Of History N/A Decentralization: N/A Fault Tolerance: Timestamping & organization Use case: This is not a standalone protocol to build a blockchain on. POH is used with, you guessed it, POS, as a technique used to timestamp transactions using a VRF (verifiable random function) hashing method that allows for blocks in a blockchain to be processed & submitted into a mempool. This allows for a network to continue operations at maximum capacity regardless of what might be happening with any individual node at a given time. If a node did not submit a block on time that is not going to hinder the production of the next block because the delayed block will be organized into its correct position as soon as possible. Description: POS Examples — Solana (SOL) POET — Proof Of Elapsed Time Nope Decentralization: 51% Fault Tolerance: Securing blockchain history Use case: This is an extremely centralized model for building a network, primarily because it is Intellectual property (IP) that is protected by patents & nobody wants to go to war with Intel. Nevertheless, the design itself is brilliant. POET is yet another model that leverages POS logic with a mixture of the Nakamoto consensus principle of the longest/heaviest chain, along with its own added concepts of an internal timer & “resting”. Miner nodes are selected at random & the same node cannot be selected back to back. Once a node commits a block a random timer is put on the node & it falls “asleep”. While it is asleep it does not use any computational resources; which makes this model greener in terms of electrical consumption than other POS variants. Description: POET Example — HyperLedger Sawtooth POA — Proof Of Access Low Decentralization: 51% Fault Tolerance: Securing Storage & data Use case: An augmented version of POW, Proof-of-Access is an algorithm created by the Arweave project that uses a clever technique to verify incoming blocks. Instead of solely relying on the previous block, miners use something called a “recall block” along with a randomly picked previous block. Recall blocks can be thought of as reliable points in the history of the chain that do not require the storage of all the chain data. This creates a lightweight model for proving data, resulting in more efficient storage capabilities, less computational resource waste & increased throughput. One potential downside of this model is that it prefers older nodes due to their history archives; newer nodes do not have access to the same archived data & will only be downloading the recall blocks. Which in theory creates a hierarchy by age. Description: POA Examples — Arweave (AR) POREP — Proof Of Replication N/A Decentralization: 51% Fault Tolerance: Securing Storage & data + Cloud Computing Use case: This beauty of a model is actually an expansion of a predecessor model in data storage (Proof-of-Space) with a build-out integration of POW that prioritizes the ability of storage space on the network/in the operational node’s disk space. There are elements of the pBFT consensus mechanism in that data that is added into the network, is replicated throughout network miners. The ingenuity of POREP is defined by its ability to combat the decentralized cloud computing industry’s most devious attack vector known as a “generation attack”, whereby a mining node pays to upload a document & then infinitely requests that document, collecting fees for providing the storage of it. Description: POREP Examples — Filecoin (FIL) That is only a small sample of how much incredible work is actually out there. Consensus mechanisms are the crux of a distributed system’s trust. The mechanism dictates the rules/laws by which the system operates. Every choice in a system’s design must be made with extreme scrutiny, applying an improper mechanism to a system will cause cognitive dissonance between the users & network operators; in turn, causing a loss of trust. On March 13th, Euler Finance, a decentralized lending platform, was for a whopping $197 million. hacked Euler Finance describes itself as “a non-custodial protocol on Ethereum that allows users to lend and borrow almost any crypto asset.” The hackers were able to walk away with: $135.8 million Staked Ethereum ( ) stETH $33.8 million USD Coin ( ) USDC $18.5 million Wrapped Bitcoin ( ) WBTC $8.7 million Dai ( ) DAI The day after the hack happened, Euler Finance to the hacker requesting if “90% of the funds are not returned within 24 hours” that Euler Finance will “launch a $1M reward for information that leads to your arrest and the return of all funds”. issued an ultimatum The hacker did not respond nor return the requested 90% of the funds, and as a result, Euler Finance finally put forth a $1 Million reward for any information leading to the arrest of the hacker and the return of all the stolen assets. After a couple of days of silence, the hacker surprisingly responded to Euler Finance via an and claimed to have “no intention of keeping” the stolen funds. on-chain message The message ended with a call for Euler Finance and the Hacker to come to an agreement to presumably return the stolen funds. I find the world so interesting now that the hacker and victim can have a conversation on-chain about the hack. Marya Kondratyevna was clearly in the plot, Smerdyakov too, he too, all had been bought over!” He formed another plan of action: he ran a long way round Fyodor Pavlovitch’s house, crossing the lane, running down Dmitrovsky Street, then over the little bridge, and so came straight to the deserted alley at the back, which was empty and uninhabited, with, on one side the hurdle fence of a neighbor’s kitchen‐garden, on the other the strong high fence, that ran all round Fyodor Pavlovitch’s garden. Here he chose a spot, apparently the very place, where according to the tradition, he knew Lizaveta had once climbed over it: “If she could climb over it,” the thought, God knows why, occurred to him, “surely I can.” He did in fact jump up, and instantly contrived to catch hold of the top of the fence. Then he vigorously pulled himself up and sat astride on it. Close by, in the garden stood the bath‐house, but from the fence he could see the lighted windows of the house too. “Yes, the old man’s bedroom is lighted up. She’s there!” and he leapt from the fence into the garden. Though he knew Grigory was ill and very likely Smerdyakov, too, and that there was no one to hear him, he instinctively hid himself, stood still, and began to listen. But there was dead silence on all sides and, as though of design, complete stillness, not the slightest breath of wind. “And naught but the whispering silence,” the line for some reason rose to his mind. “If only no one heard me jump over the fence! I think not.” Standing still for a minute, he walked softly over the grass in the garden, avoiding the trees and shrubs. He walked slowly, creeping stealthily at every step, listening to his own footsteps. It took him five minutes to reach the lighted window. He remembered that just under the window there were several thick and high bushes of elder and whitebeam. The door from the house into the garden on the left‐hand side, was shut; he had carefully looked on purpose to see, in passing. At last he reached the bushes and hid behind them. He held his breath. “I must wait now,” he thought, “to reassure them, in case they heard my footsteps and are listening ... if only I don’t cough or sneeze.” He waited two minutes. His heart was beating violently, and, at moments, he could scarcely breathe. “No, this throbbing at my heart won’t stop,” he thought. “I can’t wait any longer.” He was standing behind a bush in the shadow. The light of the window fell on the front part of the bush. “How red the whitebeam berries are!” he murmured, not knowing why. Softly and noiselessly, step by step, he approached the window, and raised himself on tiptoe. All Fyodor Pavlovitch’s bedroom lay open before him. It was not a large room, and was divided in two parts by a red screen, “Chinese,” as Fyodor Pavlovitch used to call it. The word “Chinese” flashed into Mitya’s mind, “and behind the screen, is Grushenka,” thought Mitya. He began watching Fyodor Pavlovitch, who was wearing his new striped‐silk dressing‐gown, which Mitya had never seen, and a silk cord with tassels round the waist. A clean, dandified shirt of fine linen with gold studs peeped out under the collar of the dressing‐gown. On his head Fyodor Pavlovitch had the same red bandage which Alyosha had seen. “He has got himself up,” thought Mitya. His father was standing near the window, apparently lost in thought. Suddenly he jerked up his head, listened a moment, and hearing nothing went up to the table, poured out half a glass of brandy from a decanter and drank it off. Then he uttered a deep sigh, again stood still a moment, walked carelessly up to the looking‐glass on the wall, with his right hand raised the red bandage on his forehead a little, and began examining his bruises and scars, which had not yet disappeared. “He’s alone,” thought Mitya, “in all probability he’s alone.” Fyodor Pavlovitch moved away from the looking‐glass, turned suddenly to the window and looked out. Mitya instantly slipped away into the shadow. “She may be there behind the screen. Perhaps she’s asleep by now,” he thought, with a pang at his heart. Fyodor Pavlovitch moved away from the window. “He’s looking for her out of the window, so she’s not there. Why should he stare out into the dark? He’s wild with impatience.” ... Mitya slipped back at once, and fell to gazing in at the window again. The old man was sitting down at the table, apparently disappointed. At last he put his elbow on the table, and laid his right cheek against his hand. Mitya watched him eagerly. “He’s alone, he’s alone!” he repeated again. “If she were here, his face would be different.” Strange to say, a queer, irrational vexation rose up in his heart that she was not here. “It’s not that she’s not here,” he explained to himself, immediately, “but that I can’t tell for certain whether she is or not.” Mitya remembered afterwards that his mind was at that moment exceptionally clear, that he took in everything to the slightest detail, and missed no point. But a feeling of misery, the misery of uncertainty and indecision, was growing in his heart with every instant. “Is she here or not?” The angry doubt filled his heart, and suddenly, making up his mind, he put out his hand and softly knocked on the window frame. He knocked the signal the old man had agreed upon with Smerdyakov, twice slowly and then three times more quickly, the signal that meant “Grushenka is here!” The old man started, jerked up his head, and, jumping up quickly, ran to the window. Mitya slipped away into the shadow. Fyodor Pavlovitch opened the window and thrust his whole head out. “Grushenka, is it you? Is it you?” he said, in a sort of trembling half‐ whisper. “Where are you, my angel, where are you?” He was fearfully agitated and breathless. “He’s alone.” Mitya decided. “Where are you?” cried the old man again; and he thrust his head out farther, thrust it out to the shoulders, gazing in all directions, right and left. “Come here, I’ve a little present for you. Come, I’ll show you....” “He means the three thousand,” thought Mitya. “But where are you? Are you at the door? I’ll open it directly.” And the old man almost climbed out of the window, peering out to the right, where there was a door into the garden, trying to see into the darkness. In another second he would certainly have run out to open the door without waiting for Grushenka’s answer. Mitya looked at him from the side without stirring. The old man’s profile that he loathed so, his pendent Adam’s apple, his hooked nose, his lips that smiled in greedy expectation, were all brightly lighted up by the slanting lamplight falling on the left from the room. A horrible fury of hatred suddenly surged up in Mitya’s heart: “There he was, his rival, the man who had tormented him, had ruined his life!” It was a rush of that sudden, furious, revengeful anger of which he had spoken, as though foreseeing it, to Alyosha, four days ago in the arbor, when, in answer to Alyosha’s question, “How can you say you’ll kill our father?” “I don’t know, I don’t know,” he had said then. “Perhaps I shall not kill him, perhaps I shall. I’m afraid he’ll suddenly be so loathsome to me at that moment. I hate his double chin, his nose, his eyes, his shameless grin. I feel a personal repulsion. He had rubbed himself all over with vodka mixed with a secret, very strong decoction, had drunk what was left of the mixture while his wife repeated a “certain prayer” over him, after which he had gone to bed. Marfa Ignatyevna had tasted the stuff, too, and, being unused to strong drink, slept like the dead beside her husband. But Grigory waked up in the night, quite suddenly, and, after a moment’s reflection, though he immediately felt a sharp pain in his back, he sat up in bed. Then he deliberated again, got up and dressed hurriedly. Perhaps his conscience was uneasy at the thought of sleeping while the house was unguarded “in such perilous times.” Smerdyakov, exhausted by his fit, lay motionless in the next room. Marfa Ignatyevna did not stir. “The stuff’s been too much for the woman,” Grigory thought, glancing at her, and groaning, he went out on the steps. No doubt he only intended to look out from the steps, for he was hardly able to walk, the pain in his back and his right leg was intolerable. But he suddenly remembered that he had not locked the little gate into the garden that evening. He was the most punctual and precise of men, a man who adhered to an unchangeable routine, and habits that lasted for years. Limping and writhing with pain he went down the steps and towards the garden. Yes, the gate stood wide open. Mechanically he stepped into the garden. Perhaps he fancied something, perhaps caught some sound, and, glancing to the left he saw his master’s window open. No one was looking out of it then. “What’s it open for? It’s not summer now,” thought Grigory, and suddenly, at that very instant he caught a glimpse of something extraordinary before him in the garden. Forty paces in front of him a man seemed to be running in the dark, a sort of shadow was moving very fast. “Good Lord!” cried Grigory beside himself, and forgetting the pain in his back, he hurried to intercept the running figure. He took a short cut, evidently he knew the garden better; the flying figure went towards the bath‐house, ran behind it and rushed to the garden fence. Grigory followed, not losing sight of him, and ran, forgetting everything. He reached the fence at the very moment the man was climbing over it. Grigory cried out, beside himself, pounced on him, and clutched his leg in his two hands. Yes, his foreboding had not deceived him. He recognized him, it was he, the “monster,” the “parricide.” “Parricide!” the old man shouted so that the whole neighborhood could hear, but he had not time to shout more, he fell at once, as though struck by lightning. Mitya jumped back into the garden and bent over the fallen man. In Mitya’s hands was a brass pestle, and he flung it mechanically in the grass. The pestle fell two paces from Grigory, not in the grass but on the path, in a most conspicuous place. For some seconds he examined the prostrate figure before him. The old man’s head was covered with blood. Mitya put out his hand and began feeling it. He remembered afterwards clearly, that he had been awfully anxious to make sure whether he had broken the old man’s skull, or simply stunned him with the pestle. But the blood was flowing horribly; and in a moment Mitya’s fingers were drenched with the hot stream. He remembered taking out of his pocket the clean white handkerchief with which he had provided himself for his visit to Madame Hohlakov, and putting it to the old man’s head, senselessly trying to wipe the blood from his face and temples. But the handkerchief was instantly soaked with blood. “Good heavens! what am I doing it for?” thought Mitya, suddenly pulling himself together. “If I have broken his skull, how can I find out now? And what difference does it make now?” he added, hopelessly. “If I’ve killed him, I’ve killed him.... You’ve come to grief, old man, so there you must lie!” he said aloud. In The Dark

It’s early Tuesday morning, and I am again in the metro, going to a location in Prague I have never been to before. People are quiet on the train, thinking about their lives. I saw just a few people not looking at their phones. Have we become humanity addicted to some shiny devices and so-called “technologies”? That could be another topic. Now, I am going to the second day of Prague. DevOpsDays2023 The hotel welcomes me with many tobacco smokers outside and a strange facade. I am in the right place because I saw familiar faces and heard someone talking about Jenkins. I took the elevator to the conference area and headed to the registration. A lovely girl said to me after I got my welcome pack. I said back. I told myself something was wrong. See, sweet girls never say hello to me like that. hello hello Then I remembered I am in a friendly company because DevOps is not only about technologies but also about the mindset of being nice to others. I met a few great people I worked with and then went to the conference room. I expected more attendees. The room was 80% full. It may be too early. I was just on time for the first speaker. Ben Hirschberg – Unpacking Open Source Security in Public Repos & Registries Ben is representing a company called ARMO which deals with . I discovered their free scanner while trying to convince some of my stakeholders that we are shipping not-so-well-secured containers. I was eager to learn more. container security Armo’s team researched and compared the vulnerabilities they discovered in two large groups: All open-source projects in Github as one group and a group of so-called ” from CNCF as the second. He showed the security findings in both groups, leaning towards the intention that the graduated projects are a bit more secure (in most areas). We should investigate how they did it and apply it on our own. “graduated projects The other exciting point I have struggled with is that we should investigate critical /high CVEs found during the scan because they could not be exploited in particular cases. Usually, this is part of the remediation activity, but I know of some companies that want their containers clean, no matter what. This struggle sometimes causes a lot of friction within the teams. He also showed some use cases to support that. The CVE scanners are good conversation starters, but the human element is needed to do the analysis and prepare the remediation plan. I don’t expect the AI to do this now, but this will be the future. Paul Bruce – Re-growing a DevOps Community (in Boston) Considering the title, the second talk would be boring. I was wrong. Paul took us through a growth journey, and he challenged me and most of the audience to think about diversity, community, and true belonging. Even though his talk was about some efforts in a different country, I learned a lot about working and building a community. This is a vital tool on your tool belt of (professional) life. I am a visual person. When he shared a picture of grass in the parking lot, I immediately thought: everything is possible. Then he said the same with his own words. We need to look for possibilities, specifically in unusual places. The beauty of life doesn’t lie in the known. Nobody cares about a beach full of beton, but most people will smile and be happy seeing a flower pushing through the horror and bringing something beautiful to the world. This also applies to personal and work relations. Right? I wanted to spend more time with Paul while he was in Prague, but I didn’t make it. He is a very insightful person to learn from. So next time you end up in an event near him, say hi and soak some wisdom. Break; One of my favorite parts of any event is the “free” coffee. Ok, you got me, it’s the “free” beer, but it was 10:30, and I don’t like drinking in the morning. The coffee breaks are an excellent way to support conferences by visiting sponsors’ booths. Because of them, such events exist. community The second best use of the breaks is to meet people. I prefer to avoid meeting new people. I get nervous most of the time when I have to talk to an entirely stranger person. I know I am weird. I stayed within my comfort zone by talking to people I already knew. If you like meeting people, use the coffee break to enlarge your horizon. I went back to the room after gulping a disgusting cup of coffee. Instant coffee is different from my thing, but I needed the caffeine. I went back to the room to meet the next fantastic speaker. Sowmya Sridharamurthy – TestOps? well, never mind Doing proper testing is a hoax. We always do it in a way that goes against the value and the experience within the quality team. On the other hand, the level of testing desired by the same team could be more business justifiable. This, of course, is my sole opinion. Sowmya focuses on an exciting intersection between Operations and Testing. Testing has a very low priority in the modern DevOps world. Everyone knows that we need to ship faster quality software. Surprisingly the team responsible for this part needs to be addressed. Their proposals for improvements, tools, and processes often go to . /dev/null I learned a lot from this talk. If I have to pinpoint one: Automation is the key, but you need to talk to your quality professionals to achieve that. So why don’t you start this conversation now? Can you also ensure you have covered the whole 9 yards of testing? Michael Man – Overcoming the DevSecOps Imposter Syndrome The Security component that puts the Sec part into the is vast. Often one might feel insecure in their knowledge just because we aim to focus on many things simultaneously. DevSecOps Michal covered how he solved such a problem himself. The key is to identify what area to focus on and the gaps you have in your knowledge and prepare a learning plan. Mental health is essential. Take care of yourself and reach out for help. The Cuber Security community will help you. Intermission Two cups of espresso later, I get tired of writing about my great DevOpsDays experience. My energy level is getting low, and I want to go and walk the dog now. While I am doing this, please reflect on the learnings from today: Opensource is secure; There are good examples you could follow. What steps are you going to take next? You could find beauty and inspirational ideas mostly in unusual places. What does that mean to you? Can we deliver quality software without testing? Who can tell? Continuous learning is an excellent way to beat the Impostor syndrome. What are you going to learn next? Why don’t you take a short walk as well? See you in 15 minutes. Open Spaces I am back. I hope you had a refreshing break in the open. I’m not too fond of commercial conferences because you always have many more questions and topics, and there is no venue to discuss them. DevOpsDays Prague fixes that by running an Open Space where you can propose your topic, get the people interested in discussing it, and a room or a space where you do that. I stayed for three sessions, but I contributed to two. Usually, the Vegas rule applies, so I am not going to share what we have discussed, but I am free to share what I have learned: One topic could explode into more subjects, making the whole conversation unfocused and wasteful. The main topic of the room was , but we ended up in a heated discussion about the entire Diversity and Inclusion subject, and we achieved nothing. Gender gaps in communications The second open space I visited was called “Where are the Business people.” The room needed help to identify why they needed business people and why they were interested in finding them. We have yet to reach an agreement on the goal of the session. We shared some event names where people go, and that’s all. The third discussion was about the Impostor Syndrome and how to overcome it. The meeting went south, and many people could not share their opinions, wasting good intentions. Putting some tiny structures in the Open Spaces and focusing the energy in the right direction could produce beautiful results beneficial for everyone present. I’ve seen this working! Kudos I took the metro back to my area of Prague, still observing people around me. I am curious. I went back home full of energy and new knowledge. I know how hard it is to organize an event like this. I am speaking from experience. I have organized more than 30 of those. Kudos to the whole crew of DevOpsDays 2023, who did this in their free time without any benefits except for the joy of providing the others with a place to meet and discuss common topics.
