Alpha Season 3 of The Sandbox concluded not too long ago. They drove a lot of players to the 90 different game experiences. During the 2 months, they had about 360k players, averaged 30k DAU, and average session length of 20 minutes. I tried all 90 experiences and here are my picks for the top 5. #5 Nine Chen’s Wonderland This was a multiplayer experience, and the game design revolved around exploring the map. All multiplayer maps are about exploring at this point in The Sandbox. It had great visuals and some really amazing assets, like the one shown above. #4 Lululand Lululand was another multiplayer experience with gorgeous landscapes full of hidden areas, perfect for exploration. Beyond that, they also implemented an innovative workaround to show ads inside The Sandbox. They created their own NFTs which allowed them to manually update the image metadata on IFPS. I noticed this after jumping into the experience on different days. In the same location, I noticed two different images. I knew that functionality wasn’t possible in The Sandbox so I dug into how this was done. Well done! #3 Sueco’s Split Personality This was a fun single-player game that used multiple game mechanics: trivia, mini-parkour, and a few fighting battles. If a game was created using just one of those mechanics, it would feel very grindy. I really like that those mechanics were used sparingly, making the game feel fresh. The quests were also well designed. One particular thing I liked about this experience was that when you finished one of the quests, you were immediately teleported to the scene of where the next quest would start. I also thought this was a very good brand integration as I still remember some of the details about Sueco. #2 The Walking Dead: Stay Alive This game experience was extremely on-brand. The Walking Dead universe is all about having limited resources, endless waves of walkers, and never about direct fighting with walkers. This game experience captured many of these things. Combat was indirect. Instead of fighting walkers head-on, the player has to trick them to walk into barbed wires, which would kill them. There wasn’t many unique assets that were created, which is fine. The quests were fun, but felt a bit long. That was the main reason why it didn’t get the number 1 spot. #1 Hanjin’s Music Palooza This was my favorite experience in Sandbox Season 3 by far. It was very fun, and had a Crossy Road feel. The game design used different elements like parkour, climbing, fighting, and some trivia. Again, had the full game been just parkour, or climbing it would have felt like a grind. Finishing a quest sent the player to another one nearby. It was very well thought out. I noticed this was a problem with many of the experiences in Season 3. A player would finish a quest, and then have to walk across the entire map to get to the next one. That’s where a large drop-off in players would occur. The developers of those experiences did their best based on the limited functionality of the GameMaker. The best multiplayer experiences thus relied on having great visuals and unique assets as was in the case of Nine Chen’s Wonderland, or a well-designed map for exploration as was in the case of Lululand. The best single player experiences were well-designed games. It had a good onboarding, the quests were fun, and were clearly playtested. If I got stuck on a part of a quest for more than a few minutes, I left the experience completely and didn’t come back. All in all, the future of The Sandbox is looking bright. My Top 5 Experiences in Alpha Season 3 of The Sandbox

I started my digital journey in 2002 when a 5-year-old kid got a PC on his birthday. I didn’t know much about technology at the time but games and movies were always my favorite. And then one fine day, a friend gave me a DVD containing a whole new gaming experience. It was GTA Vice City and the moment I started playing, I become a fan forever. But why, what was different about this game?? Why? Video Game summers got me playing Mario, Contra, Roadrash, and many more, but they were all designed to be played in a deterministic storyline. I was always constrained in what minimal I can choose to do apart from a decided path. The “awe” moment for Vice City was that I could do whatever I wanted in a whole city apart from the storyline. I could snatch other NPC cars, buy guns, rampage on roads, drive a tank, and the possibilities seemed limitless. Okay, What About Metaverse? To understand the metaverse, just extrapolate the same videogame - “Vice City”. Although the possibilities seemed limitless, there was a lot you couldn’t do, like - Reselling an estate, entering all buildings, creating new graffiti, playing with friends, and all the unlimited imaginative tasks one can think of. I visualize Vice City as the primitive metaverse, which Rockstar Games enhanced in their next-generation projects like GTA San Andreas, GTA V, GTA online, etc, but were still focused on the gaming community and their experience. The 3D world became more realistic and capable in features but was still built on the web2 native ideas. So What is the Metaverse? Simply stated Metaverse is the 3D extension of our digital life. Currently, we interact with our devices in a 2D space, scrolling for half a day on social media apps. Just think if you could actually enjoy the digital experience with a whole new understanding. With just a pair of VR headsets, one can visit his favorite destination, join the office team meet in 3D, enjoy a roller coaster, try on new Air Jordans, or even learn favorite subjects without leaving the comfort of a couch. With the current crypto trend, people often confuse Metaverse with Blockchain Technology, but the truth is that we don’t know how this next-generation internet will turn out to be. It is built for the educational and experimental purposes of developers, artists, and modders. The goal of the project is to provide free alternatives for those who want to create a 3D game without having to learn complex programming. The Sandbox Game Engine allows the development of games within a sandbox environment where users can shape any environment they want. In addition, it offers tools to develop various types of virtual items, such as clothes, weapons, and animals that serve as characters in the game. In June 2017, The Sandbox released an update for Game Maker, where players were given the opportunity to make their own games in 3D. All ASSETS and developments can be published on the platform. Sandbox has 166464 land plots and you can group them into districts or estates. When it comes to Decentraland, you have MANA, WEAR and LAND Tokens. In terms of variety and content, Roblox once again takes the cake. Not only are there literally millions of different experiences on the platform, but the variety they boast is immense. Art styles, objectives, and even entire game genres are represented in hundreds of different ways. It makes sense that Roblox has such an incredible amount of content, having first released over 15 years ago, but it doesn’t change the fact that this content only continues to grow. Anyone is guaranteed to find something they’ll enjoy in Roblox whereas only a specific group of people will find themselves interested in The Sandbox. She’s the first one to direct players to the iconic Alexandria Safe-Zone, complete with its walls and numerous residents. Players will find the names of other familiar characters such as Eugene, Rick, and Negan, but there are also a couple of named survivors not present in other Walking Dead media. This ties into the world’s story, making some notable departures from events found elsewhere in the franchise. Rather than following an exact timeline, the version of The Walking Dead featured in The Sandbox seems to be a collection of famous characters all together in one famous location. There are many aspects of this world that don’t line up with the hit TV series or other media. Even some characters that can be found in places like the novels or the show don’t reflect their Sandbox counterparts at all, though this might simply be a case of common names showing up in more places than one. It could be argued that this was done on purpose, though more critical fans might wonder if any writers involved in The Walking Dead had any input on this collaboration at all. The “Gameplay” of A Day in Alexandria Despite any arguments that can be made about A Day in Alexandria’s faithfulness, one can’t help but acknowledge how heavily it focuses on its writing. Every quest is focused around getting the player to connect with Alexnadria’s inhabitants through dialogue and worldbuilding. The player is never in any danger, but the constant air of mistrust and aggressive nature of some survivors can still lead to tensions rising every now and then. The world acts somewhat similar to a visual novel in that sense, using its quests to tell a story for the player to get immersed in. Unfortunately, this focus on storytelling leads to extremely poor gameplay. For a franchise so heavily focused on survival, betrayal, and conflict, there’s no point in which players will need to fend off anything. Even the walkers found outside of Alexandria are nothing more than animated statues unable to harm the player. This wouldn’t be too big of an issue on its own, but the quests given to players don’t offer a very good substitute. They simply involve running from place to place, occasionally carrying an item over to another survivor or just inspecting random areas within the safe-zone. The most these quests offer is busywork, and though players still get rewarded for completing them, it’s hard to feel engaged with them and their stories. Final Thoughts on The Sandbox Version of The Walking Dead It’s hard to recommend The Walking Dead on The Sandbox for any reason other than earning rewards from quests. A lot of the references to The Walking Dead itself are very surface-level, and the quests surrounding them don’t offer any sort of challenge or variety. It’s especially a shame because there are many Sandbox worlds that offer a lot more than this, so to see such a grand franchise represented so poorly can only make one wonder where it all went so wrong. A big reason why the concept of the metaverse turns people away is because there haven’t been many metaverses that rival the creativity and variety of other games out there. The Sandbox has numerous tools and resources to allow that creativity, but many of the official worlds don’t make use of them. It makes sense when considering worlds based around celebrities, but not with major franchises like The Walking Dead. Interestingly, this isn’t the first time The Sandbox has collaborated with The Walking Dead. They featured a Game Jam back in 2021, giving players the chance to make their own game based on the franchise. Some of these games are actually very fun and creative, pitting players against massive hordes of zombies. In my Zoom calls with projects and brands looking to build in the metaverse, I’ve been asked over and over what I think about Sandbox vs other metaverses such as DCL and CryptoVoxels. Since I’ve found myself repeating the same things over, I decided to write out the three main points on why our team focuses only on building in The Sandbox. Here’s the TL;DR: The team behind Sandbox has a long track record of shipping successful games. The Sandbox is the actually 3rd iteration of the Sandbox franchise. The previous The Sandbox mobile games have done a combined . ~50 million downloads The Sandbox game is a perfect combination of both Roblox and Minecraft, the two most popular games with kids and young adults. Brands and projects want to create entire interactive worlds, not just a single building in the metaverse. Team has a long track record of delivering products The two founders, Sebastien and Arthur have founded previous companies before. One of them is Pixowl, which still exists and is a mobile games studio. Pixowl published many games, including known IPs such as Garfield, Goosebumps, Adams Family and Peanuts. They’ve also published several called The Sandbox (not a coincidence). This Sandbox mobile game lets players create their own content, whether it’s some kind of pixel art or a mini-game and publish it to a gallery where other players can play. Sound familiar? Below is a table from AppAnnie, a mobile analytics tool that estimates the number of downloads The Sandbox mobile games have had since their release. This includes both iOS and Google. They conservatively estimate the total to be 30 million downloads worldwide but I believe the real number is closer to 50 million downloads. All you need to know is… that’s . A LOT of DOWNLOADS In essence, I’m betting on the people that are creating the product. The Sandbox game is the perfect combination of Minecraft and Roblox Minecraft and Roblox are arguably the two most popular games for kids, with Fortnite being third. Roblox and Minecraft seem like similar games but quite different under the hood. There are a few ways to play Minecraft, but the two main ones are 1) building things aka virtual Legos and 2) surviving a world full of enemies. The building aspect is a huge part of Minecraft, and you can easily find YouTube videos showcasing building time-lapses that have millions of views. As such, Minecraft tends to attract players who like to construct buildings and structures. Roblox games, on the other hand, are all user-generated. It’s in essence a game-design engine and platform. You don’t see many Roblox building time-lapses on YouTube. So instead, the players it attracts tend to be ones who want to create games, and fun experiences. The Sandbox game is a combination of both these things. There’s the block construction aspect. There’s the game design aspect. And there’s even one more - voxel asset creation. This attracts gamers who are also artists. So now, we have The Sandbox, which through its 3 main gameplay mechanics will attract the next generation of builders, artists, and game designers. Sandbox could be the most popular game in the future, but I also know if that were to happen, it’s going to take quite a while and there’ll be many roadblocks. But a 5-year horizon is feasible. Brands want to build experiences, not just buildings in the metaverse Brands entering the metaverse is an entire discussion on its own and won’t be covered in depth here. But we’re starting to see more and more brands create interactive experiences inside games. There’s and inside Roblox. There’s and buying land in The Sandbox. You don’t just see brands creating single buildings. You see complete experiences. Vans World Nikeland Adidas Warner Music Why are brands doing this? Ultimately, brands want to sell their products but their timeframe for recouping the dollars spent on advertising is much much longer. A small e-commerce business that runs a Facebook ad might expect to recoup the ad dollars within 30–60 days. A brand that spends ad dollars is looking to recoup those same dollars 5–10 years later. Brands are looking to in a younger demographic when they grow up and have disposable income, they will a brand and its products. buy mindshare so that remember There are many ways to buy mindshare- television ads, website banner ads, Facebook ads, etc. The best is creating an interactive experience, like a game that you and your friends can enjoy. We still talk about 16-bit Nintendo games but we can hardly remember Superbowl commercials from a year ago. And by building inside popular game worlds, brands don’t have to spend additional dollars to drive users to that experience. That’s why we see brand integrations in Fortnite, Roblox, and . previously Minecraft So if you’re a brand that wants to build an interactive experience, which of the metaverses do you look into? Well, a single 1x1 parcel of LAND in The Sandbox is about than the average parcel in DCL and CryptoVoxels. So for a brand looking to build something other than a single building in DCL or CryptoVoxels, they’re looking at $300–500k for just the land. Then add on an equivalent amount for development. In total, a brand could be looking at around $500k on the lower end to build out an interactive world inside DCL and CryptoVoxels. They can do that for about $50k in the Sandbox, 1/10th the cost. 10–15x bigger Brands have money, but they also need to mitigate risk in the wild wild west of the metaverse. Finally, ask yourself this: “if DCL and CryptoVoxels are already live, why didn’t Adidas or Warner Music buy a plot of land there?” Here’s one more reason why I’m bullish for Sandbox: They have significant funding (raising $93M in their latest ) that will give them room to try things and “fail fast”. Do I believe they will create something 100% according to their vision and on time? Probably not. But having a financial war chest allows a company to pivot if needed, to build the right features to achieve product-market fit, and to not die. series B The future will be multi-verse There’ll be hundreds of metaverses, just like there are hundreds of social media sites today. But there’ll only be a handful of metaverses that we go to every day. Metaverses are the next iteration of social media sites and we’ll have a specific use case for each one. In web 2.0, we use Facebook to connect with our existing friends, Twitter to get updated to date news or to talk about Crypto, and YouTube to learn a specific topic. I often talk with potential clients about building in The Sandbox and the one question I get asked a lot is, “what do we build”? Companies are looking for a way to effectively in the upcoming metaverses, with The Sandbox being the biggest and most promising. create brand exposure When I think about the types of advertising that would be closest to marketing in the metaverse, TV ad spots come to mind. If we consider that each TV commercial essentially creates one engagement for the brand (unless someone re-watches that commercial on YouTube), then we can use engagement as the measure of effectiveness of a metaverse marketing campaign. For the purpose of this article, let’s define the following terms: are fun online activities that users can participate in. From time to time, I’ll use the word interchangeably for a gamified experience. Gamified experiences game as the users that participate in these gamified experiences or games. If a gamified experience is fun enough, players will come back to it time after time. Candy Crush Saga is a gamified experience on the mobile phone that is so fun, that players come back to it day after day. Players Let’s say that each play of a gamified experience equals one engagement for the brand. And so, a brand will naturally want as many engagements as possible. The following are gamified experiences in The Sandbox and the industry it would best match with. It’s not an exhaustive list but one that I hope will grow over time. 1. Social Hub Great for: every industry, especially music events and influencers Every brand will need to have this and will be the first experience they’ll build. In the web 1.0 sense, this is the company’s website. In the web 2.0 sense, this is the social media pages (Facebook, Instagram, TikTok). The social hub is going to give the player the first impression about the brand or company. Upon first look, they will ask the web 3.0 equivalent of “does this website look up to date or does it look like it was created using Geocities”? While the social hub isn’t engaging by itself, it can be gamified by adding a collection aspect. For example, a game can be created where the player has to find all the gold coins (or some other item). Some of the items can be hidden behind secret entrances or puzzles. Players who find all the coins can get a reward, possibly an NFT from that business or brand. For influencers, this is a very interesting option because it’s their virtual residence. Fans already think it’s a big deal when they can play a game of Fortnite with their favorite YouTuber. How much more if fans can get access to the ONE hangout where their favorite online celebrity resides virtually. That's exactly what . Snoop Dogg did 2. Zelda-ish Game Great for: Intellectual Properties, influencers, or brands that have a main character This type of gamified experience is one where players solve puzzles and do not fight any monsters. Another question I hear a lot from brands is, “can the avatar not carry a sword?”. A lot of brands are family-friendly and want to stay away from any illusion of violence. While there is fighting in Zelda games, they are mainly known for really hard puzzles. Level-based gamified experiences to retain players better than non-level-based ones. More levels mean players will come back which means more engagements with the brand. Just look at the highest level you’ve gotten if you have ever played Candy Crush or know of someone who has. tend This gamified experience utilizes LAND very well. In the screenshot below, you can see how our team laid out the levels. This game experience works great for intellectual properties like Game of Thrones, Harry Potter, Walking Dead, Tomb Raider, etc. The gamified experience below was actually created by us for a past game jam utilizing the Beast Quest IP. We told the story of the main character, Tom as he goes on a quest to obtain his sword. Collect and Craft Game Great for: any brand that sells a physical product This game is one where the player has to go on different mini-quests to collect items that is used to craft a final product. That final product should be used to solve a problem, like escaping from zombies or obtaining a reward. This gamified experience will work for . It is a very good way of educating players on how a particular product is created in a fun way. any brand that sells a physical product Let’s use Nike as an example of what they could create. (Disclaimer: we are not working with Nike but if you are, we can build this!) The final item that’s created is a legendary shoe, the Air Jordan 1. In order to craft the shoe, players have to go collect all the in-game items that go into making it. Maybe they have to find the insoles in a secret location at a particular factory. Maybe they have to take on a quest by an NPC in order to get the design. Maybe players have to go to the CEO’s house (also in the Sandbox but on a different LAND) in order to get the swoosh logo. Then finally, maybe they have to talk to an in-game version of Michael Jordan in order to get his endorsement because that is also what went into making the shoe. What a cool, fun way to tell an origin story! Now, once the final in-game product is created, the player is rewarded with an NFT that they can take to the store and get a discount on sneakers. That discount reward is available for the player that completed the game. It combines interesting facts with a beautiful set design. It works very well if the questions are themed around a specific topic. I first thought of this when speaking with a client that was an educational company. They wanted a way to bring their content into a game. How could they do it? My initial thought was to create some kind of trivia game. After some research, I found that Microsoft created a game called Mind Maze way back in the day (1993 to be exact). It was for their Encarta Encyclopedia. And actually, people still play it and do walkthroughs of it on YouTube! Something like this can be re-imagined in The Sandbox easily. The dialogue system already works very well in the Sandbox. Combine that with being able to create a really beautiful set design and you get a 2022 version of Mind Maze. This also works well for a company that needs to educate its customers a lot before a purchase is made. Let’s take a financial services company for example. Actually, let’s use a crypto-lending company because it requires educating its user base even more. The would-be game could be created around facts about how money and crypto work, how collateral lending works, how much they would save compared to getting a traditional loan, etc. We could do so much with the game’s world design! If we wanted to point players to how they are slaves to the fiat system, we could start players in a dungeon. Players would have to answer questions correctly about how money works in order to progress. Once they get to the crypto-related questions, maybe the setting is now a palace because being your own bank allows people to have freedom. Last Tuesday, April 5th, The Sandbox Co-founder and COO Sebastien Borget held a press conference at the Non-Fungible Conference in Lisbon, Portugal. Borget introduced the latest Sandbox releases and some exciting news that promises to shake the gaming platform and the Web3 ecosystem. The HackerNoon team got the scoop and rushed to tell you, our most curious readers, all about it. First things first, how’s The Sandbox doing? The Sandbox numbers have undergone an impressive growth both in terms of adoption and engagement as well as the landowner community, which is now at more than 20,000.
