Big Time, Gods Unchained, MetalCore, Star Atlas and other Web3 Games Win Polkastarter GAM3 Awards 

A few days ago, I discovered an online trading card game called Gods Unchained, which is backed by . You can and battle against other players using your cards. Cards are implemented as non-fungible tokens (ERC-721) so you can buy, sell and trade in a marketplace like Rare Bits. I dreamed about online trading card games like this when I was a kid, where it has properties of physical cards such as being able to buy, sell and trade your cards without the card issuer supporting such features and other businesses being able to freely build something on top of the card game e.g. hosting a tournament. Coinbase buy cards on their website What are the chances of finding the extremely rare mythic cards? The cards have different levels of rarity: common, epic, legendary and mythic. Mythic cards are extremely rare. There are only two mythic cards that people can draw from card packs and one mythic card called “Hyperion” that was available via a auction hosted by the company, which had a mind-blowing final bid of 146.279 . ETH The Titan of Light: Hyperion At the time of this writing, none of the two mythic cards have been drawn yet, so there are still chances of winning these mythic cards by purchasing card packs. However, there’s not much information on the website apart from how many mythic cards are yet to be found. I wanted to know what are the chances of finding a mythic card and if the chances are different depending on the type of card packs that you buy. If this were a traditional online trading card game, I would have stopped here, but since it’s implemented as smart contracts on Ethereum, you can actually read the contracts’ code and find the information. The rest of this post is my journey of learning the Gods Unchained smart contract implementation and discovering information that is not available on their website. Proof of purchase and randomness The first thing I noticed when I purchased a Rare card pack is that I sent ETH to the following address: 0x0777F76D195795268388789343068e4fCd286919. I browsed and found out that it’s a contract called RarePackFour. I called a function called “purchase” on the contract with the # of packs I purchased as an argument. the address on Etherscan A call to the purchase function on the RarePackFour contract via Etherscan. The Etherscan page also offers human readable code of the contract. I found implementation of the “purchase” function: The function creates an instance of Purchase, which just records the user who made the purchase, # of packs, the current block number and randomness set as 0. And then, it emits an event called “PacksPurchased”. Interestingly, the function records a proof of purchase but doesn’t actually draw cards…so I further explored the code and found this function called “callback”: This function assigns randomness to a given purchase. The only source of randomness that is not predictable at the time of purchase is the blockhash of the block that included the purchase transaction. Since smart contracts can only access the blockhash of previous blocks, this callback function needs to be called in the subsequent blocks after the purchase transaction. As I monitor incoming transactions to the smart contract, I noticed that this callback is called by someone else soon after my purchase is made. According to a Gods Unchained’s developer, their backend server listens to the “PacksPurchased” event and calls the callback function with a given purchase ID in the event. It’s worth noting that anyone can call the callback function, so you can call it if they don’t, hence there are no trust issues here. Once randomness is assigned, it’s fair to assume that your cards are determined, so I went back to the smart contract and found a function called “predictPacks” that uses the generated randomness to determine the rarity of cards. Because Rare pack guarantees one of the cards to be at least rare, the function uses two types of functions to derive rarity: “_getCommonPlusRarity” and “_getRarePlusRarity”, where the latter is used to achieve the guarantee. Now I finally found out that there’s a 1 in 1,000,000 chance of winning a mythic card per card draw, which means roughly 1 in 200,000 per pack purchases. Both functions offer the same chance of winning a mythic, however, _getRarePlusRarity offers a slightly higher chance of winning epic or legendary cards. Below these functions, I also found functions that seem to be used to achieve similar guarantees for other types of card packs: This shows that regardless of the card pack types, you have the same chance of winning a mythic card, so if you are only after a mythic card, it’s most cost efficient to buy the cheapest packs. Now all of my questions are answered! But where are my cards? But I realized something interesting — the cards are neither represented as ERC-721 tokens nor transferred to my account. All I have is a proof of purchase and assigned randomness that can derive my cards, but I can’t sell or trade them yet. Then I found this function called “claim” which is very similar to predictPacks but it has an extra call to migration.createCard(). The migration contract was passed as an argument to this RarePackFour contract’s constructor. I was able to find the migration contract using Etherscan and confirmed it is . So who calls this function? I wasn’t able to find the information so I went to Discord chat room: a ERC-721 token contract People in the chat room are very friendly and helpful. It turns out that they separated the transaction that from transactions that and . This has a few advantages: redeems your cards make the purchase assign randomness Redeem cards when gas is cheap e.g. when large ICOs are not happening. Only redeem cards that you want in ERC-721 token form e.g. you may not want to waste gas redeeming common cards that have no trading value since card redemptions are not required to play the game. The claim function can be called by anyone, so I called the function with my purchase ID and verified that five ERC-721 tokens are now owned by my account. It also turns out that they provide on their website. a page that allows you to call the claim function This concluded my first experience exploring the first blockchain-based eSport’s smart contracts. The fact that I was able to do this made me more convinced that blockchain changes the power balance between companies and users by giving users more power. Bonus I was exploring smart contracts for other pack types and found the following code in LegendaryPackFour contract. I discovered that Legendary and Shiny legendary packs not only guarantee at least one legendary card, but also guarantee another card of at least rare rarity. A Glimpse Into the Past The concept of smart contracts predates the inception of blockchains, having been delineated by Nick Szabo in 1994. The first practical application emerged years later in 2015 with the Ethereum platform. Fundamentally, smart contracts automate contractual obligations and eliminate intermediaries. Smart contracts have found extensive applications in finance, overshadowing their potential to automate processes across various domains. Decentralized Applications (DApps) extend beyond financial tools; they merely scratch the surface. While the DeFi market has soared in complexity and success, other sectors lag behind significantly. Challenges Facing DApps in Non-Financial Sectors: Development complexity and cost Blockchain’s slow performance Lack of robust integration tools (wallets, infrastructure, etc.) Attempts at broader application have made little headway. The State of Gaming in Decentralization CryptoKitties marked the first step towards decentralized gaming, though it was largely controlled by its developers. Axie Infinity, despite its success, faced significant challenges, including a $615 million hack, due to its proprietary blockchain. Moreover, its gameplay mechanics are private, challenging its decentralized nature. Other projects like Gods Unchained and Heroes of Mavia also fall short of full decentralization. The current trend involves separating gameplay from asset ownership (NFTs for characters and items), with gameplay largely centralized. However such projects omit that mere ownership of NFTs does not provide “full control over assets.” Assets only have value thanks to gameplay mechanics, which are 100% under the control of developers. A popular term describing current projects is . GameFi Low decentralization and emphasis on play to earn. Existing games can be divided into the following groups: Focus on the Blockchain Component The gameplay consists of a basic set of actions or resembles very basic game mechanics. The characteristic of such projects is that tokenomics are central, with gameplay tacked on top. It’s hard to call these fully-fledged games. Examples include CryptoKitties, DefiKingdoms, Crypto Raiders, and Neon District. Community-Developed Ecosystems The main project develops only basic assets while the community ecosystem develops games for these assets. This sounds cool and could achieve full decentralization. The problem is that games tend to be boring and often have centralized gameplay. This approach could lead to some good games, but any successful project within such an ecosystem is likely to outgrow it and become its own entity (as happened with DOTA evolving from a map for Warcraft 3 into a standalone game). Examples are Aavegotchi and Axie Infinity (planned). SDK for Simplified Game Development This route allows for significantly fewer resources to be spent on blockchain, and in theory, the gameplay should be more refined. This approach is very promising, but there is a risk that all games will look alike and be quite formulaic. Nonetheless, studios that invest efforts in developing an SDK based on their contracts have every chance to make a good game as a “showcase” for their engine (similar to Unreal Tournament from the web2 era). Examples include MUD SDK and Paima Studios SDK. Effort to Combine Forces Creating quality gameplay and laying the foundation for full decentralization. This approach requires prioritizing the creation of a gameplay process where blockchain serves as an advantage rather than a checkbox feature. This direction is the most promising but also the most challenging. Examples are Primodium and Sacra: Falling of Myrd. Why Do We Need Decentralization for Games? To break the current trend, it’s necessary to focus on the question, and convey this to the users. “Why does a game need to be decentralized at all?” The simple answer to this question is the same as “Why is Bitcoin needed?” Real Ownership of Assets True ownership of an asset means control over its value. Only by providing decentralized gameplay can you guarantee real ownership of the asset. Security Open source is not just a whim of crypto maximalists. Only open source allows for a real security audit and identification of vulnerabilities. Moreover, immutable (or DAO-controlled mutable) code guarantees the preservation of assets and the gameplay mechanics that give value to the game’s main assets. Economy Building a complex economy capable of handling significant assets requires unprecedented quality and security of code in the gaming industry. Fortunately, years of DeFi existence have accumulated best practices in this area. For a game built on smart contracts, it’s easy to imagine an economy operating billions. Excluding the influence of third parties, whether intentional or unintentional, ensures confidence in the stability of the in-game economic model. Resistance to Censorship I think almost every gamer has faced being banned for unclear reasons or even denied access to a game altogether. A decentralized game is protected from this as much as the blockchain it runs on is protected. Even in the presence of a centralized company that supports the game’s UI, the original client code will always be available, allowing the game to be launched locally. Community and Governance The openness of the product attracts a genuinely interested community around the project. The ability to contribute and manage key issues through voting creates incredible long-term support. Integration of Real Assets into the Game Economy A game can be seen as a small state. Like any other state, to ensure a stable economy, it can own assets of other states. This is fully relevant for decentralized games. It’s easy to imagine assets locked in a game generating passive income and creating additional value for the project. All of this can be summarized in one word: DeGame. Technical Implementation Currently, various blockchains have their smart contracts, but EVM and Solidity are the de facto industrial standards. It’s not just that 90% of all developments are written in Solidity, but also the infrastructure built around EVM networks. RPC providers, The Graph protocol for the backend part, Dune analytics dashboards, and other tools solve many problems that are difficult to compensate for with other tech stacks. But is it really possible to “squeeze” game logic into Solidity given that the size of contracts is limited to 24KB and the block time in most blockchains does not exceed 2 seconds? Yes, it’s more than feasible. There are many design patterns for writing complex logic, such as The Diamond Standard (EIP-2335) and the use of libraries along with the ERC-7201 standard. These approaches allow us to almost completely bypass the limitation on the size of the smart contract code. The gas limit per transaction imposes serious restrictions on the number of actions a player can take in one go. However, the use of packed data and standard gas optimization methods allow for even complex logic such as pathfinding on terrain and determining lines of sight within a single transaction. Blockchain enables unique gameplay mechanics for multiplayer. In a standard MMO game, solving the problem of lag with 1000+ players online is practically impossible, but here, the mechanism of competition for gas comes into play. Moreover, gas payments can be tied to in-game currency through ERC-4337. This means you can control the online servers with in-game mechanics (pay more in-game currency to participate in a castle siege with other players, for example). At this stage, it’s too early to talk about a fully decentralized game with real-time action gameplay. However, game genres with turn-based gameplay fit perfectly with the concept of block finalization. Essentially, technical limitations encourage the creation of new genre combinations, such as turn-based MMO RPGs. Over time, a specific blockchain will be created to process on-chain actions of players sufficient even for real-time shooters. L2/L3 blockchains, which can now be deployed in minutes through a UI, have proven themselves well in this regard. It’s more than realistic to imagine a situation where a blockchain game can create its own temporary L3 for a specific game session. The Future of DeGame As always, games present a real challenge to the entire IT industry, pushing it towards more efficient solutions. Not only is there a need to develop complex logic on smart contracts, but the blockchain must also be capable of processing a huge number of transactions. Fortunately, there are now many blockchains capable of achieving the necessary throughput. A sufficiently large project could even develop its own blockchain to handle transactions specific to the game. A decentralized server part for the game with its validators and consensus. However, in the early stages, a standard universal blockchain is more than enough for games without real-time action. And as experience shows, it’s better to focus on one thing, whether it’s the game itself or the infrastructure in the form of a fast blockchain. In the future, we will see many projects that implement gameplay on smart contracts and open a new era in the gaming industry. This revolution goes hand in hand with the evolution of all crypto projects, and it’s only a matter of time before the old game development is displaced by new approaches.

In this article, I’ll try to help you keep up by highlighting some of the current trends that I think have staying power: Account abstraction Composability Utility NFTs In-game assets for gaming Stealth addresses So, let’s check out these five current trends, what they mean for the ecosystem, and how you might leverage them! Web3 1. Account Abstraction (AA) could be the most significant Web3 trend of this year due to its potential to finally make onboarding to Web3 as simple as it is in Web2. Account abstraction Onboarding in Web3 is challenging because users need to install a crypto wallet, ensure they manage their keys securely, remember seed phrases, and acquire tokens to pay gas fees on their transactions. Compare that to entering your email or logging in with your social accounts in Web2, and it’s obvious why most users have yet to adopt decentralized apps (dApps). AA solves these issues by abstracting user accounts into smart contract accounts. Another way of thinking about this is that AA means every account is now a smart contract that can contain logic, user authentication, social recovery, etc. The typical activities we associate with a user account — signing transactions, for example — have been abstracted out. This allows for powerful functionality, such as the ability for a dApp to sponsor users’ gas fees and the ability to pay gas fees in any token. I started playing Gods Unchained on 4/8/2020. It's that specific because that's when I purchased my first card for that game, as verified by Etherscan. I was scrolling through my Facebook newsfeed and came upon their ad. I remember seeing the ad being on mobile, which made this even more bizarre. Gods Unchained was and still is playable only on PC. So you can imagine how weird it must be to see an ad on a mobile device for a game on desktop. The steps to get into the game were long. Upon arriving on the site, I needed to install Metamask which I didn't have. Then after installing it, I needed to move funds to it from Coinbase. Then I had to sign up for a Gods Unchained account using the wallet, which is a new concept as I knew signups to use email. After exploring the site a bit, I started watching YouTube videos of the game to get an understanding of how the mechanics work. I quickly realized that it's similar to Hearthstone which I played a lot before. But instead of having to buy packs of cards, I can go purchase each card individually. That's cool! There were decks crafted by some of the top players so I decided to try out one of them. Using TokenTrove, I made my first purchase. Then a few more. In a few minutes, I had a playable deck and only of the cards I wanted. Ok this is interesting I thought. I never had this experience before. I was now buying each individual card with a currency that's very liquid (ETH) and not the in-game currency. And I'm able to resell the card back using the marketplace if I choose to. This experience made me reflect on what ownership and authenticity mean, two of the most important aspects of NFT technology. Ownership I used to collect basketball cards and so I'll look at ownership from that lens. With some of the rare cards that I own, I would put them into plastic sleeves and then into card protectors. From there, I put this stack into a box. From time to time, I would go through the collection, look at them and reflect on my childhood. As a kid, I would frequently trade cards with my friend. I had a card he wanted and vice versa. We would just make the trade without any third party. I knew that the card I owned was real and not a reprint. I know this because all my cards were from the original packs. But to another person, they would need to trust me that what I said was true. Or I had to get the card authenticated and graded by a 3rd party like PSA. The Gods Unchained cards I purchased had all the elements of this. I could look at it whenever I want. Moreover, I could use it in a game, giving it even more utility. I could also sell it whenever I want on the Gods Unchained marketplace as well as TokenTrove, and now the Immutable X marketplace. And lastly, it was already authenticated without needing any 3rd party. The digital cards are on the Ethereum blockchain and have a record of when I purchased them. Authenticity Authenticity is simply that something is what it says it is, with verifiable proof. I played a lot of Diablo growing up, specifically Diablo 2 LOD. The ultimate goal of the game, once you leveled your character to the max was finding ultra rare items. Some of these items were extremely powerful, providing a tremendous boost to the character. Players either equipped these items to win Player vs Player games or to find better loot. Some items were so rare and powerful that they were duplicated. When a player trades for one of these items, they have no idea whether it was the real thing or not. This wasn't so big of a problem unless the publisher, Blizzard in this case decided that they would remove any dupes in the game. And they did. Players would log into their accounts and sometimes find their items missing from their inventory. Blockchain, specifically NFT technology solves this. With the card I purchased, there's a record of it. It also shows the card's total population. Even cooler, if that card is traded the blockchain will show all the previous owners of it. Let's revisit my basketball cards collection for a bit. The dream of a lot of kids that I knew was to own a Michael Jordan rookie card. It's still one of the most sought-after basketball cards today. But the problem is, we have no idea how many there are out there. We only know how many have been submitted to be graded. This image shows how many have been submitted to PSA for grading and lists the population of each card in its condition. There are even still unopened cases, let alone boxes! This one back in August, 2020. sold for $1.8 million It’s . This uncertainty with the card’s total population is great for 3rd party grading companies but a problem for collectors. How many more unopened cases are out there? No one knows. estimated there are about 40 Michael Jordan rookie cards in there If the card was created with NFT technology, we would know exactly how many there are in existence from the moment it was created.  This is very valuable for any collector. Wrapping Up So what is my understanding of NFT now? .  And I'm thankful for Gods Unchained being a fun card game and running Facebook ads to help me to see that.
