The highlevel details Every hour, we look at what news articles post the and download them into a database, searching for the ones that are getting viral. top 1000 most popular news websites in the US Every hour we download data from to see how many shares, likes and comments has each article, and detect the ones that are rising up the fastest, the ones that are getting viral. facebook Using NLP, we analyze the comments that the facebook users are posting to the viral comments, to get a better understanding what diferentiate the viral posts compared with the average posts. Low level details Using a custom python web parser we crawl, every hour, a list of the top 1000 news websites in the US and add them in a database. The second time we parse the same link, we add it to the database and we calculate the difference in the number of likes, emotions and shares using the facebook API. We for before we stop indexing that particular link. monitor each story 3 days If the story resurface in our databse later, we will monitor again for 3 days before stopping again. Only for around 5% of the posts, the posts that we see that are becoming viral, we download the comments so that we can analyze them and see what people are talking about. If the average size of the request is 1MB, per DAY need to download 24 GB from Facebook Per Month, this means 720GB # Getting the number of comments, likes, shares from the FB API 1000 news websites * 50 articles per day * 5 days (avg time a article will be crawled) = 250.000 request per hour. Per day this will mean 6.000.000 requests If the average size of the request is 100k, per HOUR i need to download 25 GB from Facebook. Per day 600GB. Per month, minimum bandwidth need of 18TB # Getting the text comments for the Viral Articles. Around 1-5% of all articles. Per Day we will download around 10.000 Viral News/Top News articles Per month this mean 300.000 requests * 100 comment nested pages = If the average size of the request is 1MB, per DAY we need to download 10GB from Facebook Per month, minimum bandwidth needed is 300GB This will be data that we will keep almost entirely, so it`s costly on the server side. 30.000.000 requests Webcrawler API payload: Payload per day of 1000 news websites * 50 articles per day = 50.000 request per DAY. It’s no secret that Donald Trump’s victory in the 2016 elections was a blow to the ethos of Silicon Valley in more ways than one. Being in the middle of the Valley right now, I’m exposed to a lot of doom and gloom scenarios that is supposed to be the end of history as we know it. Socially, perhaps this may be true: nothing will ever be the same — at least, not in the way we talk about the issues to one another. If we take a calm, collected look at economic data and market trends, however, we may be able to look at the with a little more certainty. future A quick look at the S&P Index shows it dipping as it approaches election day, but overall the market seems largely indifferent to what had transpired during election week. (It’s climbing slightly upwards, in fact.) The tech industry may be feeling very pessimistic right now, but . Why does this disparity exist? the market as a whole seems to be fairly optimistic Given the volatility of Trump’s personality and claims, there is no guarantee that all or any of his economic policies will actually materialize into something workable or real. But there seems to be enough consistencies in his policy agenda that has Wall Street somewhat reassured, even as he insults them at every turn. For a second, let’s forget all about the fake-article controversy, media circus, angry rants, racism, and claims of the coming apocalypse for now. (It’s Thanksgiving, so maybe it’ll be good to get away from that stuff for a little while, anyway.) Let’s just simply look at how the market is reacting to Trump’s presidency in response to his policies related to economic development. His policies are: Lower taxes for corporations, including small business corps. Pro-business: Regulations across the board, including environmental ones are likely to be relaxed. Anti-Regulation: Stronger illegal immigration penalties, maintenance of existing legal immigration policies. Immigration: Increased infrastructure spending for federal and state projects. (Though this is promised by just about everyone, but never actually done.) Infrastructure: Foreign Trade: Protection for American jobs and interests, which may lead to increased tariffs. Save for a few crazy proposals (like making Mexico pay for it), if you look at enough of Trump’s policy proposals, they start to look like ones from a run-of-the-mill Republican candidate. This is the biggest divergence he has with the Democratic establishment, as well as the existing Republican establishment as well. (Bernie Sanders is Trump’s leftist equivalent in this regard, which also explains the hostility Sanders received during the primaries.) With one exception: Trump is in favor of economic protectionism of the American worker while adding heavy revisions to global trade policies like NAFTA and the TPP. From a purely economic perspective, the last point is what scares the Valley the most, because it has, for better or worse, been a major benefactor and profiteer of the forces of globalization for a while now. From manufacturing, labor, recruitment, customer-acquisitions, investment, social connections, off-shore practices — all the way to their saying of “changing the world”. The idea that the scope of their ideals will have to shift inward rather than outward poses a very real economic and existential threat. But now, more than ever, it’s important for tech companies to prepare for the next big pivot coming in the upcoming years. Regardless if Trump stays for 4 years, 8 years, or even less than 1, the sentiment of the public has changed irreversibly and people will be looking for something very different from than they did before. If we are to stay relevant in the upcoming election, the upcoming world, we will need to adapt to survive. Luckily, the culture of the Valley is already primed for such a change — or at least they should be, if they truly believe in the process of creative destruction. technology

The Economics of Silicon Valley Under Trump’s Presidency

Well that’s a fair assumption , i want to divide this article in two/three parts , the first part is about how filters ports , and shows you exactly what you want. tcpdump Let’s say I want to see all the packets going to port 21 with the SYN flag lit up? tcpdump -i any dst port 21 and tcp[13] == 2 You can go check the osi layer offsets and see why this makes sense , but the question is how is this passed to the socket (potentially RAW) so it can filter , also it’s got to be something simple and fast so the overhead is not huge Turns out that there’ss these bytecode language called bpf ( ) , that generates an expression that you can attach the socket using a (). http://www.tcpdump.org/papers/bpf-usenix93.pdf setsockopt Look at this for example , if you want to see the expression you can pass -d to : tcpdump Neat , and if you wanna how is this passed to the socket you could , for example: strace The key is , which attaches that filter that was previously shown, plus some sizeofs etc. SO_ATTACH_FILTER Apparently there’s some modules that let you attach complex bfp expressions in one single rule , meaning that your number of rules can go very deep and all in a single line , this will have tremendous impacts in the speed that rules are parsed (from an perspective). iptables iptables Let’s leave it here for now as I need to go to work , but i want to take a look to the iptables module and what happens after accept() ‘s a package , how does it hand it over to the kernel or userland process etc. tcpdump Thanks!!!!

People always suggest Java, C++, Go or any other kind of language that are statically typed over Python for projects with large code base due to their statically typed nature. When the code grows or becomes old, no matter how much you apply clean code or readability principles, it becomes annoying and harder to understand when you’re going to modify or fix some bugs later, refactoring becomes risky, code review time increases and well, you might start develop a grudge against it. Modifying another lazy person code that doesn’t have any clue about clean code or documentation becomes insane, you might start developing the same grudge against humanity as well. Python is great for fast development, taking an idea from zero to production but having a dynamic type nature has its own disadvantages as well. Good news is, this is not true anymore. Python 3.6 + comes with checking now, you can check out PEP 526 and its previous PEPs regarding to type checking. Mypy type What is mypy? Mypy is an optional static type checker for Python. You can add type hints to your Python programs using the standard for type annotations introduced in Python 3.5 ( ), and use mypy to type check them statically. Find bugs in your programs without even running them! PEP 484 already supports type hinting and even type annotation syntax, we have project written in Python 3.5 on production with the code base fully written with these new feature, the code has amazing readabilities. PyCharm “It has made the code review and maintenance much much easier.” When I say large code base, I’m mostly talking about projects with at least +100k lines. Right now I’m working with multiple projects, each with at least around ~250k lines of code, and they’re growing in matter of code base. I’m not saying it’s impossible, but it’s harder when types are not mentioned and hints are not there. When I review code, I constantly find myself reading through the function body only to find out the arguments types and the return type of the function. It’s like constantly running the code in my brain to get a clear understanding of it. I write DocString a lot, Sphinx style or Python style or any other kind of way to let my development tools such as PyCharm to understand the types. For instance, do you know this method takes and return ? fib def fib(n):a, b = 0, 1while a < n:yield aa, b = b, a+b I’m sure you know, since you just read the body of function to figure that out, but with new features you don’t need to do that anymore: def fib(n: int) -> Iterator[int]:a, b = 0, 1while a < n:yield aa, b = b, a+b So much better and cleaner. This is a very simple example to show case the problem and how it can be solved. You can’t bring up this excuse anymore, to say Python is for small sized projects”, just because of dynamic typing nature. Python[3] is great for projects with large code base

Minimising Mutex’s. This is mainly an exercise in examining ways in which you can write code in a non blocking style. The mutex available in the sync package is a perfectly acceptable way of protecting memory from bad things happening — un synced writers for example. Also I should point out that “ ” very much still stands as a mantra you should keep in mind when writing Go. Share memory by communicating There are a few examples of code that can block — either by using a mutex, or reading from a chan in a slow manner. Also there are certain data structure in Go that aren’t thread safe, for example maps, or bools. Thread safe bool In Go, the bool type isn’t inherently safe to use by multiple goroutines. We can protect it in a few ways. This first bit of code shows how to use a simple mutex to lock a variable while it’s being updated. Very simply, the mutex stops any other goroutine from updating the internal state of the SimpleBool struct when another goroutine has locked it. Using Go’s built in benchmarking, it’s simple to see how this is performing. and the results.. drum roll please! So pretty quick and no allocations — at least not after you have created the initial variable. But is there a way to make it quicker and not use the mutex? Go has another package within sync called Atomic. Looks interesting, right? With a few tweaks we can add some atomic goodness in place of the mutex. So instead of locking the state of the safebool struct so only one actor has the ability to change it, we’re making each change to the state of safebool an atomic action. That is to say, Go takes over and makes sure that these actions safe and atomic so that even if multiple goroutines use a safebool variable at the same time their actions won’t interfere with each other. Throwing some benchmarks at it we can see how it fares against the mutex version. If it’s not completely obvious, there’s a huge performance increase here. We’re looking at about 140 ns for each operation in the Mutex version, whereas we’re down to 32 ns for a Set and a whole 6 ns!! for each Get. That’s a ~23x speedup. cool huh? There is a subtle difference here between using a Mutex and the Atomic functions. The Mutex is far more generic and allows you to do whatever you want to the protected value. When we use the Atomic version, that action on the protected value is far more distinct and we know exactly what we want to do to the variable — set an int — therefore we don’t have any of the waiting for other goroutines to unlock that is found in the Mutex. As I said above, I’m not telling you to go out and remove ALL your mutex’s and replace them with some atomic versions. It’s purely an interesting experiment to see what is possible and if indeed it makes sense. Some lines from the Go Memory Model will stand you in good stead in this regard.. If you must read the rest of this document to understand the behavior of your program, you are being too clever. Don’t be clever. Non blocking code in Go (Part 1)

My first app , it died. Well, that’s not really true. I’m not sure it was ever alive. Sure, some people used it. Mostly ones I knew — not nearly enough to build a sustainable business around. So, it died. Eventually I ticked the “Remove from sale” box on the Apple website and shut down the AWS services. That was it. There was no memorial service. Just 6 months of time and money gone, for good, never to return. Glancd The days, weeks and months that followed haven’t been particularly pretty. There may have been time spent lying on the office floor. What happened? How could I have gotten so far off track? Do I just lay here until it all ends on some not too distant day? , I now know thee. Trough of sorrow Pen and Paper. Work slowed down. Time and progress disappeared. This wasn't a nice place to be. But how to get out? I needed to sort out the cacophony of thoughts I was having, so I started writing everything down. At first, it was just an activity log: when I got up; what I ate, what I worked on; who I saw; where I’d been. Before long I started including other thoughts, ideas, moods, and odds and ends I might someday want to remember. There were things about work, about home, about relationships and the future. I’d read through these tidbits looking for motivation and answers — hoping to find them made clear in patterns I could divine amongst the words. Somehow I felt better for having written everything down — it forced me to pause, and, for that moment more fully appreciate the thought, place, idea, or person. Unfortunately all of this information, data about me, was locked in an unsortable, unqueriable, unintelligent and ever growing mess of paper. Software. I had time. I could program. I could create software. Building something would mean getting off the floor, even if it was just a personal tool to better understand myself. Maybe there really was something interesting hidden in everything I’d written down. Perhaps I just lacked the means to discover it. I wanted to find out. I needed a system to search, visualize, and from all this data. learn What started with pen and paper soon migrated to an iOS app. I continued to record anything meaningful I did, what I ate, what I read and watched, who I saw and spoke with, ideas I had, names of acquaintances and neighbours I wanted to remember, gift ideas, sports and games I played, short reviews of restaurants and films. What happened next was unexpected. Memory. Each morning I’d read over what I’d captured the previous day. This would jog my memory in vivid ways. Small moments would spring back to life and seemingly solidify. As if re-firing those same synapses before the memories faded away helped cement them in place. It especially helped to go back a second time, one day later, and reflect once again. The software had also become my searchable memory. I could suddenly answer questions like – what was that guy’s name from down the street I met last week? What was that perfect gift I was thinking about for my partner? What was the name of that painting company Margaret recommended? My axe throwing coach, what’s his name? What was that knockout dish we ordered last month? How long has it been since I’ve seen Jamie? Much like has long been for text and notes on the Mac, this software had become a bucket of A box of thoughts in my pocket. A searchable index of me. nvALT everything about my life. Smart. Because the text was short (limited to 100 characters), and because it encouraged me to reuse content, it became a precise corpus of data about me. Precision which presents opportunity to find patterns and trends. The more I record, and the more feedback I provide, the better it gets. The software was starting to help me accomplish goals and make the changes I needed to right a capsized boat. The other side. Glancd was about capturing and sharing what you did as way to be more in touch with the people closest to you. This software is about capturing the same things as a way of being more in touch with . Turns out I’d written a pivot. Attempting to code my way out of the trough of sorrow and ending up a with a better, more interesting, take on the failure that put me there. yourself . I was chair of NetGenesis, which was the first angel investment I’d made after selling Feld Technologies (my first company). NetGenesis had raised some money and had created three different products — net.Forms (a web form manager), net.Thread (a web threaded discussion board), and net.Analysis (a weblog analysis tool). While our customer for each product was the same (a webmaster or a company trying to build a website), we were having trouble leading with all three products. Allaire was eating our lunch on .Form, a company called eShare was picking us apart on .Thread, and this new company called WebTrends was torturing us on .Analysis. A year earlier, none of this had existed — now we realized we needed to focus on one product. We chose net.Analysis and went about selling the other two products to different companies. Jerry had just invested in eShare. Somehow Raj Bhargava (the NetGenesis CEO) had connected with Jim Tito (the eShare CEO) and worked a deal to sell him net.Thread. NetGenesis got some of eShares equity, eShare got the net.Thread product, and I joined the eShare board. That started a 20+ year relationship between me and Jerry that I comfortably use the word “love” to describe. Jerry became partners with Fred Wilson and they started Flatiron Partners. We all started working with SoftBank as affiliates (along with Rich Levandov). I eventually co-founded SoftBank Technology Partners (which became Mobius Venture Capital) and SoftBank (the corporation) became a 50% LP in Flatiron with Chase. We made more investments together. As Jerry and Fred’s relationship evolved, so did mine (with each of them) as we had different kinds of professional and personal connections. I remember a moment in what must have been 1999, sitting at Jerry’s desk in NY in a dark office (I never really like office lighting so I work without it on and it had turned into evening in NY.) I was trying to get a deal done and it was a stressful mess. The tension of the Internet bubble bursting hadn’t started yet, but I was already exhausted and negotiating basically all the time with everyone about everything. I hung up the phone and put my head down on Jerry’s desk. I wasn’t crying, but I was probably in a parallel emotional zone. Jerry walked in the room, saw me, and wrapped his whole body around me and just covered me up. It was one of those moments I’ll never forget — total, compete emotional intimacy in the context of support. I’m sure he was feeling the same kind of stress and in the moment we just hugged. And then I cried. Jerry has a super power — he makes grown men (and women) cry in a business context. But that’s the super power — it’s not a business context, it’s life, and he helps us understand that in powerful, unique, and profound ways. In 2002 Jerry retired from venture capital and went on his own personal journey for meaning. He was an extremely successful VC but woke up one day hating the work, feeling unfulfilled, and struggling with what became a deep depression. I was fighting my way through my own dark shit then so we didn’t see each other often, but when we did it was extremely helpful to me. There was an immediate sense of comfort, of , of empathy, and of understanding. It didn’t matter what we talked about — we were just there, together, in the moment. love Today, Jerry runs a CEO coaching company called . #GivingThanks: Jerry Colonna and Naropa University

When developing Unity games, you will find that there is lots of code you want to share between all of your projects. It is possible to share these through symbolic links in your filesystem or importing them into the project through a custom package. However, why not go one step further and separate these shared scripts out into open source libraries for other people to share. I have created open source Android libraries before, but when it came to doing the same for Unity it was all very new and there was only a small amount of guidance available online. Here I will document the whole process including setting up source control, writing unit tests, setting up continuous integration and building the final package. Before you begin, make sure your Unity editor is setup properly for keeping your project in Git source control. If you haven’t done this yet, then please check out my article below which tell you more. Prepare Your Unity Project For Git Project Structure When you start writing the code for your package, you will find that there isn’t really any form of enforced project structure. A clear project structure that keeps things nice and organised is usually the best way to go, which is especially important if other people need to read through your code. If you are interested in how I go about structuring my projects, then please check out my article below. A Project Structure for Your Open Source Unity Packages Writing the Code When it comes to the language to write scripts in, I always go with C#. It seems to be the most common in other Unity projects I have looked at and its similarities to Java (and other Object-Oriented languages) make it quite easy to pick up. When it comes to C# classes, it is a really good idea to put all of your classes within your own namespace. This avoids there being name clashes with other classes the user of your package has in their project, much like packages in Java. namespace MyCompanyName.MySuperLibrary {

} Anyone who wishes to use your class will either reference it with MySuperLibrary.MyMainClass or they can add using MySuperLibrary; to the top of their class. There is an MSDN article to explain how best to name your namespaces. You can see above that the using statements are within the namespace declaration. This ensures that in the case of a class existing in multiple namespaces, the one you intended to use is the one the compiler chooses. Code Documentation There is a trend to focus on writing clean code that is self-documenting instead of relying on comments. However, it is still standard practise for libraries to have documentation on their public API methods. This allows documentation guides to be generated and for IDEs to show you how to use a method when you try to call it. It is therefore suggested you do this for any public methods and classes within your package. <a href="https://medium.com/media/14d8459402116111eb3181a29c20a7f2/href">https://medium.com/media/14d8459402116111eb3181a29c20a7f2/href</a> Most C# IDEs will have a keyboard shortcut to add the documentation block (or an available plugin can add this functionality). Automated Testing Writing unit tests for your C# code couldn’t be much easier, thanks to the Unity Test Tools built right into the editor. For each class you want to test (which is all of them of course), simply create a class with the same name but with the suffix Test in your test sources directory. A common practice is to also add a test suffix to the namespace for the test classes. To match my project structure I therefore add the suffix .UnitTests. The tests themselves are written using standard with the [Test], [SetUp] and [TearDown] attributes, along with the NUnit assertions. Feel free to attach the floating window, to make it easier to come back and run the tests again. In this window, you have access to Run All, Run Selected and Rerun Failed. When you run the tests you will see which ones, if any, have failed and if there is a failed test there will be a trace underneath to help you get them all passing. Continuous Integration Now that you have code written for your library and some tests checking that it works, the next step is to get your continuous integration setup. In the case of a Unity project this will involve creating a few simple scripts, for Travis to execute. Export Package The final step will be to export your assets to a Unity package. In the script above only one path is included in the package. Travis The final piece of the puzzle, is to put together the Travis script using the scripts written above. This is just to ensure that the environment is setup for Mac and iOS. The osx_image and rvm can be changed to whichever versions you want to use. Before using any of the scripts written above, chmod is used to ensure they are executable. Once this has happened, the install phase can run, which consists of running the install-unity script. After the editor has been installed, the bulk of the CI job consists of building a player with build and then running all of the editor tests with run-tests. If both of these succeed then it will check the package can be exported correctly. Release One option for releasing your package is through the Unity Asset Store, which will be documented very well by Unity Technologies themselves. This can then be hosted wherever you wish or could be committed to your master branch. With the package in your repository, you should make sure you tag the commit in which you added it with the version name and then prepare a GitHub release. This will allow people to easily go back to each version of your package and it allows you to tell people about new versions of the package.
