In its prime in the 1940s, the Mark I was one of the most powerful supercomputers on Earth. Neither the smartphone nor the operating system that powers it would be possible without the early computer science pioneers who operated them. Many of those pioneers were women, including Ada Lovelace, who created the first computer algorithm. The Mark I helped the U.S. Navy develop the complex computations that aided in the creation of the atomic bomb and those that propelled humankind to the moon.
