Warp, the AI-powered terminal for developers, is changing how it charges users, making it the latest in a string of coding-tool companies to revise their pricing models. Warp The company announced that it’s deprecating its three existing consumer pricing tiers, making way for a solitary new paid offering dubbed Build, which costs $20 a month and includes 1,500 AI credits. Its previous Pro, Turbo, and Lightspeed plans will be phased out by the end of 2025. A new “reload credits” system replaces traditional overage charges, meaning users can top up when needed instead of being penalized for exceeding limits. Unused credits roll over month to month and remain valid for a year — a small but significant shift that offers a degree of predictability. In tandem, Warp is also introducing bring-your-own-key (BYOK) support, letting developers connect their own API keys from providers such as OpenAI, Anthropic, or Google. That shift gives users more control over which models power their workflows, and how much they spend on them. Maintaining large language model (LLM) access at scale is expensive, and early “free or nearly free” tiers are giving way to models that reflect those realities. The shape of the new normal For new customers, Warp’s updated pricing takes effect immediately. Existing users on Pro, Turbo, Lightspeed, or Business plans will move to the new structure at their first renewal after December 1, 2025\. At that point, accounts will automatically shift to the $20 Build plan, with access to Bring Your Own Key (BYOK) support and the new reload credit system. Users who prefer to switch sooner can do so manually, with their credit balance resetting upon migration. Warp’s adjustments, while modest on paper, signal how AI developer tools are maturing from experimental utilities into infrastructure businesses. The inclusion of BYOK is especially telling, hinting at a future where the tools and the underlying models are decoupled, and developers can choose which ecosystem they trust or can afford. For everyday users, the change is unlikely to feel dramatic: most will see small decreases or only minor increases in monthly costs. But across the sector, the message is clear. The economics of AI-assisted coding are being rewritten, and the companies building these tools are finally pricing them like the compute-heavy services they are.
