While trying to hack how to attract long-term clients I tinkered with several strategies but one particular seemed to work better than the others — that of building trust and reliability first. Here are some of the tricks I use to attract new clients:

  1. Offering free support on any code written by me — the immediate implications of this was that I’m forced to write code which is fast and of high quality for my clients. This also gave my clients another degree of trust in me which, as I mentioned before, is crucial.
  2. Offering a discount for the first time they work with me. This works well because it’s clear that for both the developer and the client it is beneficial to build a long lasting relationship. The need to include this step depends on your track record since people tend to trust more people who have a well built track of quality work.
  3. Get reviews from your clients. I can’t stress enough how important this is, as this not only encourages future clients but also validates your work as clients are free to write anything, with no strings attached. That means that if you did a good job they will be more than happy to leave you a nice review.

After converting a potential client to a long term customer make sure that you keep giving them your attention and don’t forget that they, before anything else, are humans just like you!

I started offering my services in Codementor — this allows me to build a portfolio of reviews and jobs done before. If you successfully used that method and managed to achieve good results — responses to this story are welcome!
