Predictive policing companies have been tapped by police departments across the U.S. A growing body of research suggests that it may further entrench biased policing. The technology is “perpetuating and, in some cases, concealing some of the biased practices in the police department’s police department, an expert says. Critics say it merely techwashes injustice; some police departments have stopped using these methods after efficacy concerns were raised. A third of large agencies were using predictive analytics software in 2017, according to a report funded by the Department of Justice.
