Liquid Restaking originally treated onchain yield as nothing but a marketing gimmick meant to attract customers and investors. Now, in the “Restaking Hangover”, yield has become a customer acquisition strategy versus a sustainable path forward. Onchain yield can’t become true infrastructure for capital investment until this problem is recognized and accounted for. The Casualty of LRT Wars: Unsustainable Revenue The Casualty of LRT Wars: Unsustainable Revenue Liquid restaking was meant to be the next stage of onchain efficiency, enabling easy user access, but the way it was deployed was flawed from the beginning. Users received Liquid Restaking Tokens (LRTs) when they deposited their Liquid Staked Tokens (LSTs) into Actively Validated Services (AVSs), which are decentralized systems operating in trustless security environments. LRTs maintained the liquidity of the underlying tokens while offering higher yields through DeFi integrations such as liquidity mining and lending. This model achieved initial success, transforming passive assets into active, yield-generating digital resources. However, the popularity of liquid restaking led to the LRT Wars, which ultimately harmed the onchain economy. Competition for user deposits began to dominate liquid restaking protocols, and players started to offer exorbitant initial incentives while pushing unsustainable marketing tokenomics. In the push to attract ever-larger user bases, protocols prioritized metrics like Total Value Locked over robust risk-management frameworks, gradually weakening their ecosystems as momentum grew. Eventually, a few liquid restaking platforms became the sole absorbers of investor funds, leading to concentrated liquidity and eventual fragmentation. By securing new AVSs, restakers earned loyalty points, reward multipliers, and airdrops as payment. These early incentive schemes were intended to attract more users and increase the total yield organically. For instance, the points system originated as a gamified strategy that made the protocols more engaging. Users used their points to scale leaderboard competitions, unlock badges and rewards, and enhance their experience. Alternatively, users could convert their accumulated points into the protocol’s native token, depending on its tokenomics. The problem with this system was that points and rewards are speculative, non-liquid, and often unsecured. Yet, they were central to yield generation in a model that ignored the already risky LRT models. Risks continued to mount with how AVSs and node operators functioned. Complex slashing rules, non-deterministic conditions, and heavy hardware requirements meant more risk for restakers. While higher risk demands higher rewards, there was no method to measure return-to-risk ratios or to determine fair compensation by AVSs. Meaning restakers were always vulnerable. As a result, the market became saturated with volatile yield stacks that looked attractive to investors but depended on operator behavior, strong governance, and the market’s ability to absorb shocks. In essence, LRTs changed into carnival tickets for points, multipliers, and leaderboards as restaking venues became market gravity wells. Although TVL shot up, investor understanding of risk evaporated alongside correlated AVS exposure. Complexity hidden in internal documents and dashboards further confused the situation, alongside a “safe, high APR” message. Even as depositors increasingly invested their time and assets in them, projects continued to compete with each other in designing the most engaging loop rather than in determining who could achieve the safest reserve-grade yield. This trend continued at an ever-greater pace, further damaging the credibility of the LRT ecosystem and leading to what we see in the industry now: the Restaking Hangover. The Aftermath of LRT Wars: Institutional Indifference and Investor Fatigue The Aftermath of LRT Wars: Institutional Indifference and Investor Fatigue The Restaking Hangover is the culmination of years of shrinking yields, increasing risks, and growing disillusionment amongst investors and users. Even some of the most optimistic users admit that many actual rewards are absent because most AVSs lack a sustainable revenue stream. Initially promised high yields remain undelivered or tagged to unreliable methods like the points system. And restaking only offers a marginal yield over staking, while adding more risk, further souring public opinion. Another major issue contributing to the hangover is the lack of capital investment and TradFi interest in Liquid Restaking. Due in no small part to this volatility, institutional and treasury capital have almost entirely remained on the sidelines. These TradFi players prioritized predictability, low risk, and transparency. Without viable revenue streams or a clear organic yield source, institutional-level investors passed on liquid restaking due to its perceived instability and unsustainability. TradFi institutions need a sophisticated, structured product for their investment strategies, and likewise, treasury capital needs a trusted, robust infrastructure for long-term value creation. Something that doesn’t align with the high-risk, speculative nature of Liquid Restaking. Furthermore, institutional investors dislike the technical risks and complex operations of liquid restaking, which expose capital to smart contract vulnerabilities and, in the event of a major market downturn, can penalize restakers and even trigger a de-pegging event, leading to a liquidity shortage. That’s why most institutional capital sits dormant in wallets, portfolios, payment flows, escrows, and reserves, earning nothing while exposed to inflation and opportunity cost. The current infrastructure is too speculative, too brittle, and sometimes too transparent for serious use. Glass box treasuries and transparent rails have scared serious capital away, as they can’t broadcast every business move. This barrier has kept issuers and users apart. Institutions demand secure asset management, real-time monitoring, and regularly scheduled comprehensive audits, which most Liquid Restaking protocols have failed to provide. The industry is thus left in a loop where new investments aren’t brought in, and without them, onchain yield generation can’t produce anything new. Calling a Spade a Spade Calling a Spade a Spade The Restaking Hangover is the result of unfulfilled promised yields and ever-increasing risks to users. People have become so disillusioned with LRTs that there’s a reluctance to engage in the market, intensified by locked assets and increasingly diminished returns. The reward systems themselves are not the sole problem; even if the incentive schemes were fixed, the Liquid Restaking ecosystem would still be bogged down with low engagement and little capital investment. The biggest issue in the Restaking Hangover is that, despite recognizing the problems, no one came to change the game. Instead, the push to win the LRT Arms Race dominated developers' minds until confidence had been completely eroded, investment had dried up, and innovation had all but disappeared. Since 2024, protocols have chased points rather than addressing liquidity fragmentation. As a result, the LRT ecosystem was a mess of scattered positions that no institution could manage. As complexity became the new friction point, restaking became uninvestable.
