In the last weeks, I was reflecting on the growing reliance on artificial intelligence (AI) for intellectual activities that it is pointing to a significant shift in how humans process information and execute tasks.


I found myself thinking about the essence of someone who could heavily depend on AI for cognitive tasks, decision-making, or problem-solving.


I don’t know if there is a widely recognized scientific term yet for a human who predominantly relies on AI tools like ChatGPT for thinking and working, as this is a relatively new phenomenon and still evolving.


I say this because I was, in general, more closed to imagining a cybernetic future, made by organisms - self-regulating human-machine - that have both artificial and natural systems.


Nowadays instead we are navigating an intermediate epoch in which we are still (largely) biological entities, but we have begun to augment, and in some cases replace, aspects of our cognitive processes and knowledge acquisition with the capabilities offered by advanced AI applications.


Yet, we stand at the cusp of a profound transformation.


This shift marks the beginning of a new relationship between human intelligence and artificial intelligence. It's not just about using tools to extend our capabilities; it's a deeper integration where AI begins to influence how we think, learn and process information. We are, in essence, evolving into hybrid beings — part biological, part digital. Our minds are becoming a complex interplay of natural intellect and synthetic intelligence, leading us toward a future where the boundaries between human and artificial cognition are increasingly blurred.


Having said that, I’d define a human with this kind of characteristic a “cogni-synth” mind, to suggest a new kind of cognition emerging from the synthesis of human thought processes and AI capabilities, indicating a transformative shift in human intellectual functioning.


This epoch is not a final destination of course, but a bridge to a future where the synergy between our biological heritage and technological advancements will define what it means to be human. It's a transformative journey, one that challenges our understanding of identity, intelligence, and the very nature of human evolution.


As we marvel at the slow, meticulous dance of human evolution, we find ourselves at the brink of a monumental leap. The AI is acting as a catalyst, accelerating our evolutionary journey.


This pivotal moment marks a departure from millennia of gradual development, ushering in an era where the fusion of organic intellect and synthetic intelligence redefines our essence.


To begin grasping the impact of this cogni-synth approach, let’s explore its key facets anchored in the broader context of the universe's natural processes, where humans are not the central focus but rather a component of the vast, ever-evolving tapestry of existence.


🧬 Biological evolution and human growth: historically, human development has been a gradual affair, spanning years, even generations. From a biological and evolutionary perspective, human growth and learning are indeed slow processes. This evolutionary pacing is deeply rooted in our nature, ensuring survival and adaptation. It reflects a strategy where traits and behaviors that enhance lasting life are gradually selected over generations.


🤖 AI's role in evolution: today, AI, especially Large Language Models, challenges this tempo, representing a significant leap in this evolutionary trajectory. Unlike biological evolution, AI evolves rapidly, leaping across what nature takes generations to achieve.


🔗 The cogni-synth fusion hypothesis: imagine a future where humans and AI merge – a 'cogni-synth' species. This isn't just science fiction; it's a potential reality where our capabilities are amplified beyond natural limits. This notion aligns with transhumanist theories, where technology is used to transcend the limitations of the human body and mind.


🧠 Engineering and AI integration: we're already witnessing AI integration in various aspects of life. From an engineering and AI perspective, the integration of AI into human life is already happening, albeit not to the extent of creating a new species. AI assists in tasks, decision-making, and even learning processes. The concept of machines that are ready to operate from day zero and require no training is already partially realized in various AI applications.


🔍 Psychological and philosophical considerations: this fusion raises profound questions. From a psychological and philosophical standpoint, this opens up questions about identity, ethics, and the essence of what it means to be human. This idea challenges our understanding of life and consciousness. What does it mean to be human when interlaced with AI? Will AI-enhanced beings still be human?


🌍 Historical context: Each technological revolution has reshaped society and altered its trajectory. The AI revolution might just be our next giant leap. The integration of AI into human life, we know, is just the next significant shift, similar to the industrial revolution or the invention of the internet.


🚀 The Future Awaits: Our cogni-synth future holds promise and perils. While it may accelerate evolution, it also compels us to redefine our essence and adapt to an ever-changing world.


As we stand at the bottom of this new era, let's ponder – what does the future hold for a species intertwined with AI?
