That's the insight at the centre of Aldous Huxley's Brave New World, and it's the most useful and accurate lens available for understanding what is actually happening to work in 2026 and beyond. Brave New World Huxley's dystopia isn't administered by terror, but rather pleasure. The soma, a pleasurable and freely available drug with no side effects, is the control mechanism. People take it because they want to, because the world has been carefully arranged to make the alternative feel like unnecessary suffering, and because every institution that might have made refusal feel meaningful has been quietly removed. It's a 200-year project with a single consistent ambition: take something interior, qualitative, and human (judgment, pace, discretion, creativity) and make it exterior, quantifiable, and manageable. The goal at every stage has been the same: legibility. The system can only optimize what it can measure. Everything else is, by definition, waste. Only their legibility to the system is. After the body, the mind is being measured now. There is nowhere left inside working life to hide an inefficiency the system hasn't yet learned to see. This is Huxley's architecture, built brick by brick across two centuries. Each layer felt, at the time, like modernization. Like the rational organization of productive effort. Progress. The soma doesn't announce itself as soma. AI just inherits this project and removes the last remaining spaces where human discretion was simply too expensive to measure. Together, they form a system in which the cost of being unreadable to the machine is unemployment, and the cost of being readable is becoming the kind of person the machine can read. People cycle on exercise bikes to earn digital currency. Every moment of attention is an asset. Every deviation from the loop is a cost. This gap John the Savage is the only character in Brave New World who came from outside the system: raised on a reservation, steeped in Shakespeare, familiar with suffering and beauty and the full texture of human experience. When he enters the World State, he immediately sees what its inhabitants don’t: what was removed to make them content. He objects not because the system made people miserable, but because it made them smaller. The comfort came at the cost of everything that made the discomfort worth enduring. The World State's inhabitants think they're happy. By most metrics, they are. They just have no basis for comparison. They describe the rational individual response to the situation as it currently exists. But there's a meaningful difference between adapting to conditions and having chosen them. Most people caught in this transition are doing the first while being told, by the people who benefit from the framing, that they are doing the second. That substitution is how the system avoids the question of who designed these conditions, why they were designed this way, and whether they could have been designed differently. The worker who learns to prompt effectively, curates their Slack activity for the monitoring layer, and games the ATS keywords on their CV has navigated successfully. None of that navigation is the same as having agreed to the terms. The question of whether those conditions should exist, who set them, and in whose interest they operate doesn't disappear because someone found a workable route through them. It was created by the accumulated logic of a two-hundred-year project, now running at software speed, on infrastructure whose ownership we traced in the last piece.
