At a science fair in the 1950s, gaming was born and emerged as a peculiar technology. Dr. Edward Uhler Condon introduced the first ever recognized example of a game machine at the New York World’s Fair in 1940. Based on the ancient mathematical game of Nim, the game was played by an estimated number of 50,000 people throughout the six months that it was on display, with the computer reportedly winning more than 90 percent of the games.

The first commercial home game system, however, did not appear until 30 years later, when Ralph Baer and his team released their prototype which a vacuum tube-circuit called "Brown Box" in 1967 that could be connected to a television set and allowed two users to control cubes that chased each other on the screen. Yet due to inevitable circumstances, the game was discontinued around August 1972 to 1975, and it was believed that poor sales were the reason. Nonetheless, this was the beginning of digital gaming, however mishandled it may have been.

The Struggle for Acceptance

Some people in society had a hard time taking gaming positively and often misunderstood it as just a waste of time or money. Others say that it will make you dumb or violent. Indeed, there are a lot of negative connotations linked with gaming. So the struggle is real for the journey of gaming into recognition.

In almost everything, it's not just all sunshine and rainbows, there will always be unexpected circumstances that will affect an invention like games. Cases of gaming addiction, health deterioration, psychological factors, and more issues are just some of the reasons why gaming was hardly accepted in society before, making people come up with various misconceptions about it. It is really hard to gain recognition and acceptance when there are a bunch of factors that need consideration. We can't deny the fact that just like any other technology, gaming struggles too with the acceptance of the community. Despite that, it continues to grow into one of the most profitable entertainment industries in the world.
