User authentication is the process of verifying that some entity, for example our user, is actually who they claim to be. There are three primary means of user authentication in popular use: Passwords, PINS, and passphrases are all common examples of Type I authentication. Type II is the most secure type of authentication because it cannot be guessed and is hopefully not easily stolen. Type III authentication involves the notion of out-of-band (OOB) factors which are data items likely only known to the user.
