During the 1930s, there was a frenzy for mountain climbing in Europe, driven by some advances in technology, and a modernist zeal. The North Face of the Eiger, a mile-high sheer face of rock, was considered by many to be an unclimbable mountain face. It was so dangerous the Swiss authorities actually banned people from attempting to climb it. In 1938 a team of four climbers, including Heinrich Harrer took three days to climb the wall, camping overnight in Bivouacs on the sheer face.via the TL;DR App
