I couldn’t agree more. One of my favourite comic artists is Stuart McMillen who recently started using Patreon, which very closely resembles what you’ve described. For $10 a month you get awesome hand written postcards with his latest frames and sneak peaks of comics. Also updates/AMAs/etc but I don’t check in that often.

Ultimately he’s super talented and I’ve always wanted to throw him some cash. Before Patreon I always felt obliged but never gave a dollar, now I’m dropping bills monthly.
