Every software team knows the cost lurking inside a codebase: the hours lost just figuring out how things fit together. That interaction sits alongside the generated documentation, giving developers a way to interrogate the codebase directly rather than just browse it. Auto-docs that don’t decay Most dev teams have tried auto-documentation at some point: tools that scrape code to produce API docs, class diagrams or comment blocks. They can look neat on day one, but because they’re static, they quickly fall out of sync with the code they describe. Code Wiki can perhaps best be described as Google’s attempt to break that cycle. The system regenerates explanations after each code change, updating diagrams and summaries along the way. If a method moves or a module is rewritten, the wiki changes with it, keeping the surrounding explanations aligned with the latest structure. And it lands just as the industry’s attention is shifting to a related problem: understanding code as quickly as we can now generate it. LLMs can write code quickly for sure, but teams still need to read, debug and maintain the systems they produce. Code Wiki slots neatly into that shift, with the promise of reducing the cognitive overhead of navigating a sprawling codebase.
