This winter, singles will choose virtual romance and long-distance relationships, according to Dating.com´s latest insights.

One of the most popular communications platforms from Social Discovery Group, Dating.com, revealed in its recent study on ¨cuffing season¨, that eager-to-date singles will expand their horizons on dating apps and are open to virtual romances and long-distance relationships. As the leading company behind 60+ online communication platforms, the SDG study offers insights not only about this year´s dating trends during the colder months but also into what makes an ideal ¨cuffing season¨ partner.

"As soon as the weather turns chilly, 'cuffing season' begins—a lonelier time of year when singles are more inclined to seek consistent communication or to pair up with someone as activities move indoors," said Sabrina Bendory, Dating & Relationships Expert. "The need for companionship during this more isolating season makes singles want to form relationships more than any other time of year. Dating.com has observed more long-distance or online-only connections developing during this season, where couples may meet and build/maintain emotional connections through virtual reality chats and video calls."

  • 89% of singles surveyed in the U.S. claimed to be open to having a partner during these upcoming colder months, with 34% being open to their short-term fling turning into a longer-term virtual relationship.
  • 32% of respondents were open to having an online-only relationship with 57% claiming the top reason is for companionship. Digital daters are planning to stay signed on.
  • 83% of respondents have had a virtual relationship with someone in a different state; with 40% of daters believing that long-distance virtual relationships = less stress and fewer strings attached. "A low-pressure approach to dating is in," said Bendory.

The standout stats for what makes an ideal partner during this time were:

  • 71% of respondents want someone relaxed and to go with the flow.

  • While a whopping 85% want someone who they share similar interests with and do similar activities.
