This method requires optimum effort but provides you with maximum flexibility over where clusters run and how they’re managed. Also, you can quickly switch between clusters by using the following command: \ ```yaml kubectl config use-context ``` \ The file that is used to configure access to a cluster is sometimes also called a *kubeconfig file*. This usually is a generic way of referring to configuration files. It doesn’t signify that a file named kubeconfig exists. \ You should only use kubeconfig files from trusted sources. Usually, a specifically-crafted kubeconfig file can result in malicious code execution or file exposure. Those using kubeconfig files from untrusted sources must first inspect it carefully as much as they would like to inspect a shell script. \ **Pre-Requisites** \ Before one begins, one needs to have a Kubernetes cluster, and the kubectl command-line tool to be configured for users to communicate with their cluster. The people who don’t yet have a Kubernetes cluster can create one by using minikube or can use one of the following Kubernetes playgrounds: \ a) Kataconda b) Play with Kubernetes \ To check whether kubectl is installed, one needs to run kubectl version –client. The kubectl version should be within one minor version of your cluster’s API server. ## Define clusters, users, and contexts \ Suppose you have two clusters, one for development of work and one for scratch work. In the development cluster, your frontend developers work in a namespace called frontend, and your storage developers work in a namespace called storage. In your scratch cluster, developers work in the default namespace, or they create auxiliary namespaces as they find useful. While access to the scratch cluster requires authentication by certificate, access to the scratch cluster requires authentication by username and password. \ One can first start with creating a directory named *config-exercise*. Within the *config-exercise* directory, one can create a file named *config-demo* using the content below: \ ```yaml apiVersion: v1 kind: Config preferences: {} clusters: - cluster: name: development - cluster: name: scratch users: - name: developer - name: experimenter contexts: - context: name: dev-frontend - context: name: dev-storage - context: name: exp-scratch ``` \ Within configuration file clusters, users and contexts are described. Alternatively, you can use the *config view* command instead of the *config-demo* file. \ ```yaml kubectl config --kubeconfig=config-demo view ``` \ The output displays the two clusters, two users, and three contexts: \ ```yaml apiVersion: v1 clusters: - cluster: certificate-authority: fake-ca-file server: https://1.2.3.4 name: development - cluster: insecure-skip-tls-verify: true server: https://5.6.7.8 name: scratch contexts: - context: cluster: development namespace: frontend user: developer name: dev-frontend - context: cluster: development namespace: storage user: developer name: dev-storage - context: cluster: scratch namespace: default user: experimenter name: exp-scratch current-context: "" kind: Config preferences: {} users: - name: developer user: client-certificate: fake-cert-file client-key: fake-key-file - name: experimenter user: password: some-password username: exp ``` \ The fake-ca-file, fake-cert-file, and fake-key-file described above constitute the placeholders for the pathnames of the certificate files. You must change these to actual pathnames of certificate files in your environment. \ Sometimes you may wish to use Base64-encoded data embedded here instead of separate certificate files; in that case, you need to add the suffix -data to the keys, for example, certificate-authority-data, client-certificate-data, client-key-data. \ Every cluster is a triple (cluster, user, namespace). For instance, the dev-frontend context illustrates, “Use the credentials of the developer uses to access the frontend namespace of the development cluster." \ See the current context: \ ```yaml kubectl config --kubeconfig=config-demo use-context dev-frontend ``` \ The output demonstrates configuration information aligned with the dev –frontend context: \ ```yaml apiVersion: v1 clusters: - cluster: certificate-authority: fake-ca-file server: https://1.2.3.4 name: development contexts: - context: cluster: development namespace: frontend user: developer name: dev-frontend current-context: dev-frontend kind: Config preferences: {} users: - name: developer user: client-certificate: fake-cert-file client-key: fake-key-file ``` \ Now, what if you want to work for a while in the scratch cluster? Also, the command will use the credentials of the user listed in the *exp-scratch* context. \ You can also view the configuration associated with the new current context, *exp-scratch*. \ ```yaml kubectl config --kubeconfig=config-demo view –minify ``` \ Finally, if one needs to work for a while in the storage namespace of the development cluster, one can change the current content to dev-storage: \ ```yaml kubectl config --kubeconfig=config-demo use-context dev-storage ``` \ You can also view configuration associated with the new current context, dev-storage: \ ```yaml kubectl config --kubeconfig=config-demo view –minify ``` \ Creating a second configuration file \ In their config-exercise directory, you can create a file named config-demo-2 with the following content: \ ```yaml apiVersion: v1 kind: Config preferences: {} contexts: - context: cluster: development namespace: ramp user: developer name: dev-ramp-up ``` \ The preceding config file defines a new context named *dev-ramp-up*. \ Setting Up the KUBECONFIG environment Variable \ You need to see if you have an environment variable named KUBECONFIG. If so, save the current value of your KUBECONFIG environment variable, so that you can restore it later. For example: ## Linux ```yaml export KUBECONFIG_SAVED=$KUBECONFIG ``` ## Windows PowerShell ```yaml $Env:KUBECONFIG_SAVED=$ENV:KUBECONFIG ``` \ > $Env:KUBECONFIG=("config-demo;config-demo-2") \ In your config-exercise directory, you can enter the following command: \ ```yaml kubectl config view ``` \ The output shows merged information from all the files listed in your KUBECONFIG environment variable. The merged information contains the dev-ramp-up context from the config-demo-2 file and the three contexts from the config-demo file. \ ```yaml contexts: - context: cluster: development namespace: frontend user: developer name: dev-frontend - context: cluster: development namespace: ramp user: developer name: dev-ramp-up - context: cluster: development namespace: storage user: developer name: dev-storage - context: cluster: scratch namespace: default user: experimenter name: exp-scratch ``` ## Exploring the $HOME/.kube directory Those who already have a cluster can use kubectl to interact with the cluster. Then you’ll have a file named config in the $HOME/.kube directory. \ Go to $HOME/.kube, and see what files are available. Typically, there’s a file named config. There might also be other configuration files in this directory. Briefly familiarize yourself with the contents of these files. \ Append $HOME/.kube/cofig to your KUBECONFIG environment variable \ If you have $HOME/ .kube/config file, and it’s not already listed in your KUBECONFIG environment variable, append it to your KUBECONFIG environment variable now. For example: \ **Linux** \ ```yaml export KUBECONFIG=$KUBECONFIG:$HOME/.kube/config ``` \ **Windows Powershell** \ ```yaml $Env:KUBECONFIG="$Env:KUBECONFIG;$HOME\.kube\config" ``` **Linux** \ ```yaml export KUBECONFIG=$KUBECONFIG_SAVED ``` \ **Windows PowerShell** \ ```yaml export KUBECONFIG=$KUBECONFIG_SAVED ``` \ Return your KUBECONFIG environment variable to its original value.
