Living organisms are Kantian Wholes that achieve Catalytic Closure, Constraint Closure, and Spatial Closure. We here unite for the first time two established mathematical theories, namely Collectively Autocatalytic Sets and the Theory of the Adjacent Possible. The former establishes that a first-order phase transition to molecular reproduction is expected in the chemical evolution of the universe where the diversity and complexity of molecules increases; the latter posits that, under loose hypotheses, if the system starts with a small number of beginning molecules, each of which can combine with copies of itself or other molecules to make new molecules, over time the number of kinds of molecules increases slowly but then explodes upward hyperbolically. Together these theories imply that life is expected as a phase transition in the evolving universe. The familiar distinction between software and hardware loses its meaning in living cells. We propose new ways to study the phylogeny of metabolisms, new astronomical ways to search for life on exoplanets, new experiments to seek the emergence of the most rudimentary life, and the hint of a coherent testable pathway to prokaryotes with template replication and coding. Is the Emergence of Life an Expected Phase Transition in the Evolving Universe?

The City of New York recently announced it would begin implementing the use of AI weapons detectors, named Evolv, on the city’s subways to screen passengers. “I am telling them they need to evolve and get it out, because I think it’s good technology,” Mayor Eric Adams said at his weekly press availability on Tuesday. “I’m really excited about this, just the potentiality that we could identify someone carrying a gun before they enter the system.” But the city’s residents say they still don’t feel safe. As described by an NBC report, the scanners, about 6 feet tall, feature the logo of the city's police department and a multicolor light display. When a weapon is detected, an alert is sent to a tablet monitored by a pair of NYPD officers. The system is not supposed to alert everyday items, such as phones and laptops — though a reporter's iPad case set it off Friday. Civil liberties advocates also protested against the scanners. The New York Civil Liberties Union and the Legal Aid Society said they would sue the city if the technology is rolled out on a wide scale. The NYCLU believes the technology will make subway riders subjected to unconstitutional searches by the police. The system has only been installed in several locations so far. But with 472 subway stations throughout New York City, the largest number of any system in the world, this lack of Evolv AI detectors in every station means the subways are not actually being kept safe. Though there have been high-profile incidents, like a 2022 shooting on a Brooklyn train that left 10 people wounded, crime in the New York City subway system has fallen in recent years. What this means is that overall, violent crime in the system is rare, with New York’s subway system being generally as safe as any other public place. As of July 21, subway crime is down 8%, compared with the same period in 2023, according to police data. Last year, there were five killings in the subway, down from 10 in 2022, according to police. AI weapons detectors are useful since they can identify potential threats more quickly and accurately than human personnel. Unlike human guards, AI systems do not suffer from fatigue, distraction, or bias, ensuring consistent performance and vigilance. On the flip side, the same detectors can misidentify harmless objects as weapons (false positives) or fail to detect actual threats (false negatives), potentially causing security lapses or unnecessary panic. Critics say Evolv is problematic from a legal point of view. Evolv can also have other shortcomings, such as being susceptible to hacking and other cyber-attacks, which could compromise the system’s effectiveness. In addition, the initial setup and deployment of the detectors will likely be expensive, requiring significant investment in technology and infrastructure – all of which of course comes out of the city’s budget paid for by taxpayers whether they like it or not. As NYCLU notes, the use of AI in security settings raises ethical and legal questions about accountability, especially in cases where the system makes errors or is involved in incidents resulting in harm. The DeFi sector is experiencing renewed momentum, with venture capitalists pouring over $1 billion worth of investments into crypto projects in March 2024 alone. The bigger part of this money was funneled into DeFi-related initiatives, reflecting growing confidence in the sector. Moreover, the total value locked in DeFi protocols has surged dramatically since the beginning of 2024, climbing from $54 billion all the way to $104 billion over the last 6 months. However, this rapid growth leaves many wondering about the risks accumulating within the DeFi ecosystem. Are they being adequately addressed, or are they left to escalate unchecked? In order for the DeFi space to sustain its momentum and credibility, these concerns must be addressed. In this article, I would like to give my own take on the nature of the existent risks and what DeFi protocols can do to mitigate them. What are the key risks associated with the modern DeFi ecosystem? How have they transformed? One of the first major complications that comes to mind is the shortage of professionals capable of effectively regulating risks within the DeFi ecosystem. Today, the DeFi sector faces a challenge reminiscent of the 2008 banking crisis, where the sudden need for risk regulation outpaced the availability of skilled individuals. The DeFi protocols are indeed developing, and the value locked in them continues to grow, but the number of experts who possess proficiency in both risk management and DeFi is very low. The specific nature of DeFi risks further complicates the situation, demanding specialized knowledge that is currently scarce. Another thing to point out in terms of risks is the ongoing belief among many market participants that DeFi-related risks, in their majority, have transitioned from technical to economic ones. I can’t say that I agree with this stance. The reality is that technical risks remain significant. The expansion of the DeFi industry means that more funds are locked in protocols, and that, in turn, only creates more incentives for hackers to set sights on this market. The allure of substantial rewards makes DeFi protocols prime targets for cyber-attacks, emphasizing the ongoing importance of addressing technical risks. In fact, data for Q1 2024 shows that over $300 million worth of funds were lost in hacker attacks. So, while economic risks have undeniably emerged due to the sector’s rapid growth and the above-mentioned absence of experienced professionals, these do not diminish the persistent technical threats that DeFi faces. Moreover, the rapid expansion of DeFi protocols introduces another layer of risk related to the readiness and adaptability of development teams. It is not rare for teams to struggle when it comes to recruiting individuals with the necessary skills to manage both the technical and economic aspects of their protocols. The shortage of specialized staff means that some risks might be overlooked. For instance, a team focusing more on economic risks by hiring economists at the expense of technical security specialists may inadvertently elevate the potential for technical vulnerabilities. The intertwined nature of these risks necessitates a comprehensive understanding and robust management strategies, which are currently hindered by the lack of adequately skilled professionals in the DeFi space. To sustain the growth and integrity of DeFi, it is imperative to develop a workforce equipped to handle both the technical and economic dimensions of risk management.
