Startups of The Year 2023 Winners: North America 

By Noah Jessop Every few minutes, Michael (names have been changed) heard his office mate’s computer let out of a soft “beep.” He and Trey had stayed late at the office after dinner to see if they could build a detection model — taking in all the data they had: locations, times, correspondence. Every unassuming beep represented something far more sinister: detection of one of the company’s users cheating on their spouse. Satisfied with their work, they parted ways for the weekend. But by Monday, this little experiment had to be shut down: with more training data, the beeps had become more and more frequent — until they became so numerous that the beeps had become a constant droning tone. This was more than a decade ago at one of the tech giants. Welcome to the dark side of data. I’ve held off on writing about this topic for some time — an equal mix of personal discomfort and professional involvement in the space. I spent nearly two years in the underworld of data brokers, creators, and the most shrewd operators (in a former life, with a lot more parties and yachts than my current humble hustle). What has surfaced this month is just the tip of the iceberg of what’s already happening with millions of users (including your very own) data, right now. Earlier this week, a former Facebook employee that “a majority of Facebook users” could have had their data harvested by app developers without their knowledge. publicly stated Facebook has touched the third rail like no company before — none of the many data vendors have had the triumvirate of I) swaying a major election, II) with customer data they owned and shared, that III) generated them profit when third-parties purchased media on their platform using said data. What I will say before going further — most of the uses for data start out from a good place. But with great power comes great responsibility — and often, the lines get blurry quickly. It seems innocuous to help a restaurant find their existing customers and get them to come back more frequently. It starts simply with your corner family Italian restaurant. But somehow it begins to feel different when the same tactics are deployed by one of the largest fast food companies driving the obesity epidemic in the country. But who are we to say they shouldn’t target people who can scarcely find a filling meal for the same price? Lots of shades of grey…which leaves the door ajar for a simply breathtaking amount of entrepreneurial activity. Spies & Data Brokers To get a good view of how the customer data business evolved, it’s best we look to the very start. Dun & Bradstreet, today a $4.5B publicly traded company, provides commercial data and insights. It didn’t start that way. Instead, the founder built a giant ledger chronicling the life, family, and habits of every man in the trade industry. What better way to decide whether to give a man credit but to know where he goes to church and how much he drinks when he is at the bar? The credit bureaus . were the NSA of the 19th century Eventually, decisions of credit became more regulated. But the entrepreneurial activity abounded. One didn’t have to know a lot about people to have valuable signal: early mail order companies (and hucksters) would share their lists of buyers (and suckers). The problem of course is that data is zero marginal cost. Once I’ve purchased your list of customers (for a dubious product), I can easily resell this list to others. A few steps away from the actual customer relationship, data feels very indirect and people will happily buy, sell, and model away. Early commercial relationships had some safeguards — rather than sell you my customer list, I would simply rent it. (E.g. only allowing one catalogue to be sent per quarter this year.) But how do I enforce these contract terms? In the physical world, I can embed “honeypots” on that list — specific people and addresses that shouldn’t receive mail from anyone else. If I get your catalogue after our agreement (or mail from other vendors), I know you’ve violated the terms of our agreement. Unfortunately, digital complexity has made these kinds of arrangements so much harder to manage. If you give me your list of customers — just for one mailing — there’s no way you can prove if I’ve converted these addresses into email addresses or cookies (or Facebook custom audiences) and continue to market to these customers well after the term of our arrangement. There’s simply too much surface area. From this increased surface area enables the darker side of data to emerge. Sin #1: Leakage There are countless ways data can wind up in the wrong hands — perhaps your Facebook friend auth’ed an application that violated Facebook’s terms of service (Cambridge Analytica case). Or, worse, Equifax collects data about you that you cannot prevent them from doing — and their own ineptitude causes those records to be sold to the highest bidder, who certainly doesn’t have your best interests in mind. Other cases are less acute and noticeable: every website you visit with ads is broadcasting your presence (and a host of other information) to every corner of the ad ecosystem, where countless players quietly listen, sell their aggregated log data, and let your data slip into unknown-to-you hands. Use an ad blocker and feel protected? Your TV may still (and say) back to its masters. be reporting everything you watch Want to see just how far simple information spreads? Just ask a California resident, who can request information on all third parties who have received their information. One errant purchase can you have your personal information copied to dozens of data aggregators — and these are only the ones playing by the rules. under state civil code Other datasets move seamlessly. Do you know all the companies that your mobile provider licenses your location to? Scattered across dozens of nameless companies — most who probably don’t have strong information protection and employee access control like a Google might. It may be anonymized, but not for long. Sin #2: Aggregation & De-Anonymizing We can all do our best to protect our individual information. But all it is takes a small bit of data about someone to deanonymize them out of an aggregated dataset (which we cannot control). If you have access to just one or two snippets of innocuous information about me, you can quickly connect many splinters of data, tying different ids together to create a profile. For example, if you looked at an anonymized set of browsing data (easily obtainable from your favorite ISP) and knew my zip code, you could easily find me. Who else looked at the civil state code link above today from my zip code? A state-level actor could, of course, find out this and far far more. But we’re not even talking about anyone so well equipped. Where this takes an even more disquieting turn: protected areas. As a simple example: it’s not legal to make credit decisions based on race. But it’s entirely possible to mix available datasets together to build a model that is certainly correlated with race (and only target ads offering credit to those groups). Without auditors pulling apart the internals of a machine learning model, this remains hidden. Worse still, medical data can be used in the mix as well — while one can’t share protected data, it’s not hard to train a ‘model’ that gives propensity for diabetes or similar for any given piece of personally identifiable information (PII). HIPAA Often, the offenses aren’t so indirect. Facebook itself has been in apartment ads. accused of letting landlords discriminate by race Sin #3: Psychographic Profiling Most people don’t mind being marketed to. Most people don’t mind if the marketing is more relevant than not. Where things become troubling is when relevant becomes perverse; when the pitch feels so tailored to an individual’s psyche that it is coercive. With data leakage, aggregation and some creativity, it becomes easy to find data deployed in ways that just make us uncomfortable and uneasy — and craft a message to hit someone most effectively based on their opinions, attitudes, interests, and lifestyle. It’s already been 5 years since New York Times’ — targeting a teenage mom with baby gear before her family knew she was pregnant. But this case is pretty elementary — it’s just based on an observable fact about a customer. What if advertisers knew your innermost psyche and what made you tick? massive story on personalization Some sites exist that predict how to best sell to an individual . Beyond our own internal biases — we are social creatures. Companies (aggregating and de-anonymizing data) will sell mappings of which of your friends (or celebrities you follow) are most likely to change your mind on any given topic. purely from data on their public Linkedin profile Imagine opening the newspaper, and rather than reading an article for your town, you are reading an article specifically tailored to cause you anger. This is a weapon when deployed at scale. Think we’ve reached peak ad personalization? Wait until you see an ad where you are the protagonist flaunting the product. (Mirror AI, a of this week’s Y Combinator batch, is building easy emoji generators to do this.) recent graduate Having seen the ugly underbelly of this industry (which, it is worth noting, is full of mostly very good actors with the best intentions), I am glad to see our collective consciousness awakening to questions of how and where our personal data is being used, and for what purposes. The Dark Side of Data (Confessions of a Former Data Hitman)

Blockchain and digital assets are attracting the best minds in the tech space. And nowhere is that more evident than in the Defi Space. Aaron and Ted first connected at the University of North Dakota where both finished their undergraduate engineering degrees, and incubated innovation and entrepreneurship programs together. Aaron is a Crypto Sherpa and developer with multiple successful projects in his development portfolio. Aaron's background is in the Aerospace industry but has since turned to blockchain. Ted has diverse experience in corporate innovation in the Med Tech industry and is an avid Crypto investor and blockchain innovation expert. Q: Give us some insight into the typical Yields APY farmers can earn, and the atypical yields you have earned. It really depends on the asset, as stable coin yield is almost always >10% and can be upwards of >30% on some pairings. On Ethereum, if you can find anything over 6% it’s really good, but then other LP positions or locked assets can earn 60+% (cvxCRV). There was about a month period where I was in stable coin LP with a coin called IRON. When I jumped in it started at around 500% APY, and eventually ballooned to the point where I was earning 2%/day. That lasted for around a week until the coin that provided a lot of the backing, TITAN, lost a lot of value and there was a bank run and crashed IRON down to $0.74, luckily, I recognized what was happening and got out at $0.96. AK: The yield associated with APY farming is usually closely tied to the volatility of the underlying
 asset. For example, stablecoin farms can offer anywhere from 20-40% depending on the
 stablecoin and yield mechanism (auto-compounding, etc), while more volatile assets can offer
 80,000%+ APY. My returns hover in the 40-60% range across my portfolio, although I have
 experimented with the ultra-high APY pools and farms with varied success. TZ: Q: What's your due diligence process like in researching potential liquidity pools? The first thing I do is try to learn where the yield is coming from and what asset exposure is required. Often you are providing liquidity for tokens on an exchange and are rewarded with one of the tokens, so if I am bullish on both tokens (say TOKE/ETH pairing) and the liquidity incentives look like they’ll outpace any impermanent loss, I’ll allocate value. Things move so fast that I often buy in first with a small % of my portfolio, then do a self-audit of some of the smart contracts to get an understanding of the exact process. If I like what I see, then I’ll allocate more to that position. AK: The most important things to consider when choosing yield opportunities are the assets
 involved, the solvency of the pool and platform, yield mechanics, and the longevity of your
 stake.
 First, we must understand the volatility, trajectory, security, and validity of the underlying assets
 we are using. Traditionally, more volatile and low-volume coins will offer exorbitant yield, but that
 yield may be returned to you in a volatile/low-value asset. What we fear in this situation is called
 impermanent loss. Impermanent loss happens when you provide liquidity to a liquidity pool, and
 the price of your deposited assets changes compared to when you deposited them. The bigger
 this change is, the more you are exposed to impermanent loss. A 1000% APY doesn't mean
 much if you're earning that on a crypto that suffers a 90% price drop. Some pools leverage the
 redistribution of trading fees to offset this loss, but this is not ubiquitous across all pools. TZ: Another good sign of health for yield pools is the TVL, or total value locked. Higher TVL typically
 means more stability and consistency in the yield. This also points to health in the yield platform. On the platform side, pay attention to the yield mechanics, on-ramps, and off-ramps. The closer
 to liquid you can be, the better. Some platforms offer auto-compounding and leverage features
 that simplify the process and save on gas, so keep an eye out for that. Q: Favorite platforms for yield farming? The Blue Chips for sure include Curve and Convex. However, I am very interested in the concentrated liquidity approach of Uniswap v3 and pool optimizers like Popsicle Finance. If I am in a more degen position I likely will stake assets in an automatic yield aggregator vault, like Yearn or Beefy Finance. This is a tax friendly approach as well, if I wait for a year to withdraw, I can take long term capital gains tax instead of short term. AK: For stablecoin yield I prefer to use Curve, Anchor Protocol, and Yearn. There are many more
 out there that are worth investigating, though.
 For yield on “blue-chip” assets, I prefer SushiSwap, TraderJoeXYZ, and UniSwap.
 In the higher-risk category, I have been using Wonderland, AutoFarm, and Beefy Finance with
 good success. TZ: Q: For someone who wants to start earning yield do you guys have some tips? APY that is being paid out in a like asset (asset you stake is the same as the asset you earn) is a mirage. 1000% on POOP coin is always 1000%, whether POOP coin is trading at $500 or $0.50. There is often a lot of ponzinomics that emerges with some farms. Find assets that you like and find ways to earn yield on them. Sometimes that means taking a 30% LTV loan on your Ethereum on AAVE, and then using those stable coins to earn 30% yield on Curve or some other yield producing platform. Start treating your portfolio like a balance sheet. You own assets that can earn a salary for yourself, so be smart and respect your positions. Think about the implications to your tax obligations and how you can optimize. Use leverage only when it makes sense, liquidation is not fun. Start slow and safe(r) with stablecoins or blue chips you have strong faith in. Start with pools that have a track record of security, performance, and solid mechanics
 and contracts. Yield farming can be a playground for scams, be diligent. Understand your risk tolerance and apply that to your portfolio. While crypto
 routinely challenges the statement of “if something is too good to be true, it likely is” this
 still rings true in the yield and liquidity world. Q: Where do you see the Defi and yield space heading in the next few years? A lot of the growth that we will see will be from traditional finance continuing to come online to different blockchain protocols, but there will be a lot of innovation as it is easier than ever to stack these new money Legos together and make some great things. Soon mortgages will be on blockchain, and new payment systems will emerge. I think we will see the fees for doing business will continue to sink, Uniswap already has some pools that only take 0.01% per swap. That will continue to evolve. Yields will dilute for the largest protocols, but there will always be somewhere you can earn +50% on some assets. There will continue to also be new exploratory monetary policies that emerge, like $OHM and $TIME. I’m also interested in the long-term impact that bribes on governance voting will emerge, as it is already providing great benefits for CRV and CVX stakers, and is starting for $TOKE as well. AK: In general, the entire DeFi space is in its infancy. DeFi is vastly superior to traditional finance
 and for that reason, I expect it to continue to grow as we shift toward mainstream adoption.
 Liquidity is the backbone and fuel for DeFi. It helps small projects get off the ground, enables
 decentralized exchanges and rewards the community. I foresee yields dropping over time, but
 the opportunities will always be there and be vastly superior to the abysmal rates of traditional
 finance. TZ: The world of Crypto is evolving, and with it bringing in innovative minds focused on making defi the apparent platform of the future, slowly eating away at exorbitant centralized and legacy financial institutions.

We’ve all been there: very politely asking the internet for a video of a cat engaging in some wacky antics. And then … the internet pauses, seeming to consider the request. What’s the problem here? It might be you (sorry). It might be the infrastructure you’re working with. It might be your internet provider. Let’s explore some causes and solutions together. What Is a “Good” Internet Speed? Step one is to conduct a so-called speed test. Jonathan Schwantes, senior policy counsel at Consumer Reports, who works on the organization’s , which is collecting consumers’ internet bills and speed test results as part of its advocacy work, suggests using a pair of tests, one from and another from . Fight for Fair Internet initiative Ookla MLab Each uses slightly different methods, so Schwantes recommends trying both to make sure they’re consistent. The tests show two important results: download speed (how quickly you’re receiving data from the internet) and upload speed (how quickly you’re sending data out to the internet), measured in megabits per second. A bit of data is a single unit of information, expressed in the binary code that computers can understand as either a one or a zero. A megabit is one million bits of data. If a speed test says your download speed is 100 megabits per second, your connection is pumping 100,000,000 ones and zeros into your device each second, and short kitty antics videos . should stream fine What qualifies as a “good” internet speed depends on what you’re using it for, however. When Schwantes gets a slow speed test result, his first suspicion is usually along the lines of “Something is up with my router.” If you’re reading this on a device connected to Wi-Fi, the first connection you have to the larger internet are your modem and wireless router or your modem/wireless router combo beaming out Wi-Fi to the immediate area. The first two things to try if your internet is slow are restart the router and get your device closer to the router. Like a computer, routers store information in their memory, and sometimes an error gets saved mistakenly. Restarting is a way to shake out the cobwebs. And Wi-Fi signals degrade the farther they travel. If distance is slowing your speed, consider your options: Your Wi-Fi router may offer the choice between a 2.4 GHz connection and a 5 GHz connection; 5 GHz offers faster speeds over shorter distances, and 2.4 GHz provides slower speeds over longer distances. The 2.4 GHz frequency can also get congested with traffic from other wireless networks in the area, so sometimes switching to 5 GHz will provide a less obstructed path for your cat video. If your device has an ethernet port, you can also plug directly into the router and avoid the Wi-Fi issue altogether. Around the start of the pandemic, Schwantes noticed his internet slowing down. In this case, the problem was him. He was using a decade-old wireless router. After replacing it, he said, his speeds improved dramatically. What’s Happening on the Other Side of the Wall? The biggest speed variances come from the different ways data flows through the tubes directly outside your home. Data can travel on different types of tubes—fiber optic, coaxial cable, and copper wire, and even on wireless cellular networks—each providing very different speeds for uploading and downloading. Sometimes the technology that leads to your home is too out of date to support faster speeds. The effects of this fall more on communities of color and poorer residents, an . AT&T, Verizon, Earthlink, and CenturyLink charged customers in 38 cities the same price for sluggish DSL connections as they did for zippy fiber connections. investigation by The Markup found In 36 of those cities, the worst deals tended to go to households located in neighborhoods that were lower-income, less-White, or historically redlined. Fiber optic cables consist of a core of ultra-thin glass surrounded by a reflective coating that transmits information as pulses of light at the speed of, well, light traveling through glass. The fastest internet connections available today are termed “fiber to the home” because the fiber optic cables begin where you live and run all the way to where they join the larger maze of fiber optic tubes making up the internet. (There are also systems called “fiber to the node” or “fiber to the curb,” where fiber runs to a connection hub somewhere in your neighborhood, and then the signal moves to slower wires the rest of the way.) If the internet is a road, fiber is like an expressway with five lanes in each direction and a 75 mph speed limit. Not everyone in the United States even has access to fiber internet. According to a study released in January by the Fiber Broadband Association, of U.S. homes have that option. less than half At the other end of the spectrum, copper wire is like a one-lane road where you can’t go above 25. Not only can Fiber Expressway get you home faster than Copper Lane, but it can also handle far more traffic without congestion, which is important because your data runs through the same tubes as those of your neighbors who use the same ISP. The longer you can stay on fiber before having to turn off to something that’s not fiber, the faster your connection. What is copper wire? DSL, which stands for Digital Subscriber Line, operates on the same copper wires that phone companies use for traditional telephone service—so-called landlines—albeit on a higher frequency range that doesn’t necessitate tying up a phone line the way dial-up service does. ( .) Kids, ask your parents Phone lines were built to transmit voice, which doesn’t require a whole lot of data, so they tend to be s‑l‑o‑w. DSL speeds are dependent on the distance from where they hook into the fiber connections leading to the internet’s backbone. They need to be boosted frequently to push data over longer distances. In the middle is cable internet, which is generally slower than fiber but can provide relatively high speeds. Copper wire is like a one-lane road where you can’t go above 25. Cable internet is piped through coaxial cables carrying signals on a copper conductor surrounded by layers of plastic and metal coating to shield it from interference (an improvement over DSL). Since the coaxial cables were originally developed to transmit cable TV, which is fairly data-intensive video and audio information, they can move a lot of data. Since cable TV is traditionally a one-way broadcast medium, cable connections generally have faster downloads than uploads. A relatively new entrant to the residential broadband market is fixed wireless. As the name implies, this type of connection doesn’t involve a tube running directly into your home. Getting a fixed wireless connection typically involves installing a receiver pulling in cellular service that is then converted to Wi-Fi. Fixed wireless home service across the country, but some services advertise speeds that can give cable connections a run for their money. isn’t universally available For remote locations, where it’s not feasible for ISPs to install any kind of wired connection between the internet’s fiber backbone and your home, satellite internet, which allows data to be transmitted up to a satellite and then beamed down to an antenna at your residence, is an option. Satellite internet is generally not as fast as fiber or cable internet. Ookla found the median speed for SpaceX’s Starlink, the fastest satellite internet available in the U.S., was around 100 mbps download and 13 mbps upload. Can I Just Switch to a Different Provider and Get Faster Internet? You can certainly give it a shot! However, a dearth of competition in the broadband market across the United States may make that tricky. “The U.S. market for internet service is dominated by just four companies: AT&T, Charter, Comcast, and Verizon,” reads the 2020 edition of the Open Technology Institute’s Cost of Connectivity about the state of the U.S. broadband market compared to that in other developed countries. report “In most cities, there were only, like, two providers, and there are large swaths of addresses that only had one provider,” said Claire Park, one of the report’s authors. The show also features a feminist perspective and a female point of view, which are both welcome in a superhero show. The series is set in the Marvel universe, and its creators have taken an approach to its premise that feels familiar, yet fresh. She-Hulk: Attorney at Law is a comedic exploration of the superhuman era, with its many enhanced individuals. While the character is primarily centered around solving real world problems, there are some scenes that display Jennifer Walters’ superhuman abilities. It’s sexier than the MCU If you think that Marvel movies aren’t sexy enough, check out She-Hulk. The new series is streaming on Disney+ now. Unlike the MCU, which is aimed at kids and families, She-Hulk has plenty of sex. As the lawyer Jennifer Walters, She-Hulk is not a new character in the Marvel Universe, but she does have a long and impressive comic book background. The first appearance of the character was in a comic book, where she’s a highly successful lawyer. She was almost killed during a failed murder attempt, but was saved when Bruce Banner gave her a blood transfusion. This helped her survive and gave her green gamma beast powers. The She-Hulk was born in a comic book in 1980 called “The Savage She-Hulk.” She was endowed with super strength and was 6 feet tall when barefoot and much taller when shod in heels. She had cantaloupe biceps, cocktail olive skin, and the waist-to-hip ratio of a lingerie model. The introduction of She-Hulk was supposed to revolutionize the MCU. Marvel knew that they had a special character and had successfully tapped into a growing female audience. After all, the 1970s marked the second wave of feminism and marked a sea change in society. It’s a weak entry into the Marvel TV canon She-Hulk: Attorney at Law takes a “kitchen sink” approach to canon, with a comic-book-ish tone and a mix of episodic storylines and larger serial mysteries. The result is a show that’s fun, zippy, and chock full of Easter eggs, but ultimately feels a bit off-kilter. Despite its weak entry into the Marvel TV canon, the show’s first episode is an enjoyable and involving character study. Its pitch-perfect premise is solid, and Tatiana Maslany plays the title character with charm. In addition to Maslany, the show also features Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner and Tim Roth as Abomination. The comics’ origin story is also a weak entry into the Marvel TV cannon. The comic series’ original source material features Jenn Walters as a successful lawyer who experiences sexism on a daily basis. She later becomes the green version of herself, and this new identity is a sideshow for her. It’s helmed by women A number of women are leading the way in law reviews. More than half of the top 16 law schools have at least one female editor-in-chief. That’s a remarkable turnaround in a short period of time. It’s described as a “Ally McBeal-style” legal comedy. It stars Mark Ruffalo as the titular smart Hulk, Benedict Wong, and Tim Roth. Renee Goldsberry, Jamela Jamil, and Josh Segarra also star. It is created by Jessica Gao and directed by Kat Coiro. The series focuses on the life and career of a 30-year-old attorney who acquires the green persona after an accident with Bruce Banner. She must navigate a legal career and a complex personal life while balancing her new identity. The series contains strong language and a healthy dose of superhero violence, so watch with caution. The comic’s dual theme of independence and acceptance pervades She-Hulk’s relationships with men. In particular, her father, Sheriff Morris Walters, was a tumultuous figure. A widower who lost his wife to mobsters, he was overprotective, judgmental, and controlling. As a result, Jennifer She-Hulk’s desire for independence from her father was a constant conflict. The Good Wife and She-Hulk Attorney at Law Review both feature law firm scenes in high-rise buildings. The Good Fight, however, was also set in a high-rise setting and was a lawyer-centric show. USA’s Suits had a similarly high-rise lawyer-oriented plot, and Netflix’s Partner Track stars Arden Cho as a young lawyer attempting to break the glass ceiling in her profession. She is also a frequent target for sleazy paparazzi. It’s more like Ally McBeal than The Good Fight This show aims for a more comedic approach than other Marvel shows. It borrows elements from “Ally McBeal,” “Legally Blonde,” and “Seinfeld,” and also borrows some elements from the She-Hulk comics. As a result, it also takes a more grounded approach to superhero life. The show begins with Jennifer Hulking out in public, and the audience sees a more comedic approach to legal issues. It’s not a serious comedy, though, and it has a lighter tone than The Good Fight, which is a far darker comedy. But the cast is solid, and Renee Elise Goldsberry, Josh Segarra, and Jameela Jamil are all dependable supporting players. The show is well worth watching for the characters and the premise. The She-Hulk concept has been around for some time, and it’s a great one for Marvel TV. The She-Hulk character is very recognizable, even under all the special effects. She’s green, large, and very stylized. Netflix has picked up the TV rights for the Defenders, including the titular superheroine. While the show is not tied to Marvel’s main line, it’s still an entertaining comedy, and a fun way to explore the character. Unlike other Marvel TV shows, Netflix’s take on the character is more wholesome. This show is like Ally McBeal for comic fans.
